5-0 out of 5 stars good book, cool ideas for typography
good book, cool ideas for typography,
best for students taking type class.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for typography inspiration
Ideas are hard to come by, as most designers know. This book is one in a very long series of 'Typography' books and is one of the best so far. It's packed full of new type styles and innovative type concepts. This is one for the coffe table and the library.

5-0 out of 5 stars the definitive type annual
This year's typography annual is abolutely essential for anyone who is a typographer, a designer who works with type, or anyone who is a fan of this creative medium. This year's annual is extremely well produced and the design of the book itself is fabulous. The design is much better than the futuristic cover that Attik did last year - a good move on behalf of the Type Director's Club. Both annuals are excellent, but this one won't look nearly as dated in 10 years. There are a few pieces showcased this year that make you wonder how they made it, but its a minor complaint when you consider the overall quality of work featured here. With type professionals such as Matthew Carter and Robert Bringhurst as judges, you know you are going to have a great book. This is a must own. ... Can't wait for next year's offering! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Real Art..
This book is like a kick-ass mobile art gallery. Anyone interested in some cool artists with real talent that you can't find in museums or galleries should have this edition on their coffee tables or on their mantles. A visual cornicopia of excellently presented ideas compiled in a book that will have you closely staring at the pages. Really cool.

4-0 out of 5 stars Consistent with the series.
Not unlike the other titles in the Spectrum series, Spectrum 9 provides a great overview of contemporary fantastic art, the best emerging artists, new trends, and samples of the forever-loved art. The artwork is much better documented with sources listed for further study of fantastic art.

If you've ever admired a cover on a sci-fi book, cool credits in a fantasy movie, or even action figures of your favorite super heroes, this book might be for you. The nice thing about the Spectrum series is that you do not need to reach for a specific volume to look at specific form of art. Each volume offers a pretty even and ,personally I think, good cross section of the current fantastic art and design.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spectacular, As Usual
I have been patiently waiting (OK, maybe not so patiently) since November for Spectrum 9 to be released. Even though I had to wait an extra month and a half, it was well worth the wait. Once again, the Spectrum series provides us with the best in contemporary and fantastic art, and it IS fantastic. Entries range from weird, to gory, to funny, to beautiful. I began this series with Spectrum 8, then bought 7. Unfortunately, the other 6 are out of print (and cost a pretty penny), but these 3 will do. If you like sci-fi/fantasy art, this is the book for you. There's something for everyone, and in my opinion, there is not one bad painting in the whole book. Buy this today - you will get more than your money's worth. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bookstore Blockbuster
I just got this book today ... I have been on the edge of buying it for about a year and lo and behold my stinginess on price paid off! I love this book the quality of the work contained within is fantastic, and the jacket outside done by our friends at ATTIK design is just wonderful. A must by especially at the price! ... quick go get it!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars One of Attik's masterpiece
Typography 21 is a original and creative book. The content inside were very inspirational to me, as a graphic designer. It has a variety of designs, so it should satisfy your eyes.

I thought that the page designs by Attik were much better than the works they reviewed. It was a good book, but not the best.

I am thinking of getting NoiseFour by Attik next.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth The Money
I don't buy many design books because many of them tend to blur together and look the same after a while. What I really like about 'Typography 21' is that it is an 'annual' for design across many mediums. There is a nice introduction about the jurors and it showcases some of their work, to give you a sense of their backgrounds and then gets right into the work. It is a great source of reference for many needs.

The book itself it very beautiful and if you think the book-jacket is pretty, wait until you see what's underneath it.

Is it any surprise that Imaginary Forces practically owns the motion-graphics category???

I really like this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational
Check this book out. I'm sure a bunch of designers already have their copy. I initially bought for the fact that ATTIK designed it. Some cool work but the book as a whole is a comprehensive look at contemporary typography. Some really great pieces. One for the collection...

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful...
This book is beautiful. I have just got it 20 minutes ago and went through some of the pages and all I had to say was.. wow. Inspiring. In my opinion the cover is inspiring enough. Never seen anything like this... Next, I will probbably get 72 dpi. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Get out your magnifying glass
Annual awards recipients' biographical material as always appetizing and interesting. However, the following sections depicting current work focus on first-person design-incantations rather than the work. Due to smaller format (reduced dimensions) it's difficult to see the work examples and all nuance is for the most part completely lost.

A surprising amount of lengthy unilluminating explanatory text.

A very odd section attempting to illustrate very simple survey results in a bizarrely complex manner.

I can't use this book as a design reference as I do with previous AIGA annuals, so I'm going through the bother of returning it. ... Read more

Conceived by AIGA in conjunction with award-winning Houston-based Rigsby Design, who've put together a charming, refreshingly straightforward, McSweeney-esque package, this year's version of 365 includes 13 short essays by top design critics that contextualize the ever changing landscape of contemporary graphic design. In addition, AIGA's 2002 medalists, Robert Brownjohn and Christopher Pullman, are profiled in insightful biographical essays and retrospective portfolios. 5-0 out of 5 stars At the intersection of design and experience
365
Talking about book design. Standing tall and white, the new 23rd AIGA 365 Design Annual expresses my thoughts, and I applaud it for its cover design. The centered title "The Twenty-third Annual of the American Institute of Graphic Arts" is printed on a thin uncoated paper that wraps around the front and back cover. On the front cover the number "365" is printed in black and barely shines through the wrapper appearing as a ghost underneath the title. To me it suggests the 365 days that will sink into oblivion and that, as with everything past, we will have to wait patiently for those moments of re-emerging experiences. Good design happens in us. ... Read more
