Book Description

The only product selection guide you'll ever need!
Select the best products, systems, and components for any building project, in compliance with codes and regulations! Whether you're an architect or builder, you'll find top-flight guidance in Time-Saver Standards for Building Materials and Systems. The experts assembled by Editor-in-Chief Donald Watson provide easy-to-understand guidance on how various materials function. Using clear, explicit illustrations and short, bulleted comparison points rather than lengthy text, they explore with you key issues in selecting products and give you valuable information for a full range of product types. Information is organized by CSI MasterFormat, the product specification system most commonly used in construction and in the Sweet's catalogs. It's also cross-referenced to the UniFormat system, which indexes products by the sequence of assembly in design and construction, a real advantage in preliminary design and cost estimating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Illustrated 2000 Review
I have had a couple of months now to review this book. It is very detailed in many construction techniques. There is a senario for almost every project a contractor or dedicated homeowner could do. The information in the book can be overwhelming, however, with some time to become familiar with the book, it becomes easier to follow.

4-0 out of 5 stars Note: not for residential applications.
Great book, but you should know this book is *commercial* oriented, not residential.

5-0 out of 5 stars Illustrated 2000 Breaks the Building Code
As the scientific world hails the completion of the first working draft of the human genome map, design professionals can hail the completion of Author Terry L. Patterson's work on understanding the 2000 International Building Code.

As a design professional with the responsibility to interpret and understand the numerous building codes and countless amendments, the methods of code research can be exhausting and ill productive. The current format and language used in most building codes lack the framework and illustrations that are needed to join the terms and definitions into an understandable and correct conclusion.

Patterson's purpose is to provide an aid to understanding the 2000 International Building Code. The handbook is a success by providing the necessary framework and illustrations that aids the reader to understanding the building code's intent as it relates to real projects.

The price of $125.00 may seem a little steep at first, but the cumulative time saved by using the handbook will more than pay for itself many times over.

Patterson's work includes the research and input by many design professionals, students and building code officials. The collective efforts by many have produced a handbook that is a must for all design professionals. As all design and construction officials know, a complete and accurate interpretation of the building codes is never complete. In the Preface, Patterson asks the reader to provide useful feedback that can be used for future editions. With the continued combined efforts of many, this Handbook has promise and will continue to be a useful tool for all.

Many thanks to Mr. Terry L. Patterson for helping the design professional to understanding the "genome map" of the 2000 International Building code. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Time-Saver Concise is Precisely Right
With over 400 floorplans and illustrations, this book packs a powerful bunch of information from cover to cover. For those who are familiar with floorplans and possess an eye to visualize, this book is for you.

The author does a great job of providing you with instructions on how to pick appropriate floorplans to meet your particular remodeling needs by helping the reader to create an architectural program.

Next, the reader can use this program to determine which floorplan(s) will best meet their remodeling needs. The author concludes the book by providing the reader with specific construction details not ordinarily found in most remodeling CD's that will help the reader tailor the plans to remodel his or her home.

In a nutshell, this book has the potential to save the savvy reader who is remodeling a home thousands of dollars and much frustration by helping the reader develop a professional plan which will meet his or her needs. In order to use the accompanying CD, you must realize that the CD is not a program, but drawings that must be imported into a program using Auto CAD releases 12 or 14. Try ordering an Auto CAD before you purchase this book if you intend to use the CD. ... Read more

Book Description

This book offers a wealth of valuable, hard-to-find technical information on mid-twentieth-century building materials and systems, all carefully selected from the Fourth (1951) through Seventh (1981) editions of Ramsey/Sleeper's acclaimed Architectural Graphic Standards. A key reference for architects, builders, and educators whose work involves building maintenance and restoration, it brings back into print hundreds of pages that no longer appear in the current edition of Architectural Graphic Standards but which have real value and relevance for today's architectural practice.
Chapters include data and details for residential design, sitework and landscaping, stairs, fireplaces, energy-related issues such as sun shading and solar control, and more. Of particular interest is the information-on topics such as stonework and terra cotta, plank and beam framing, roofing systems, mill construction, and pneumatic tube conveyors-concerning systems and techniques no longer used in contemporary design but still found in buildings subject to remodeling and adaptive reuse.
Throughout, the book is made easy to use with the help of useful guidance on the interpretation of the older pages and annotations placing the material in a CSI MasterFormat(TM) context.
Filled with well-presented visual examples that offer important practical insights into the evolution of twentieth-century design and practice, this unique volume is an important working tool and a valuable addition to every architectural library.

2-0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware
When it was difficult to get to the library to view the Uniform Plumbing Code, I used this at home to study for an exam. I was rudely surprised when I got to the libary, compared the references to the code, and found that this guide was riddled with errors. It serves a purpose as it alerts the user to possible code issues, but you must check all references. The codes are expensive but not as expensive as counting on this guide might be.

4-0 out of 5 stars What a plumbing instructor thinks.
Code check has helped me immensely. I teach residential plumbing for a 150+ employee 1500+ homes a year Northern California company and have found that the info in C.C. is formatted in such a way that my apprentice plumbers can easily find info they need. They seldom need clarification. All codes cited are referenced with the UPC and IRC section numbers for easy look up.(IRC not used here in NorCal but nice for those who need it) Diagrams are simple and clear. C.C. is laminated and tough. Built for in the field use. I love this book. Holding back the fifth star due to spanish version unavailability.

2-0 out of 5 stars Its helpful
This has good diagrams, good descriptions, but is very basic. For the money you can find a better source.

From the author: This article reviews the debate about how to limit financial instability in emerging markets, focusing on reform at the global and national levels. The new international financial architecture, as it is known, is designed to be organized around four pillars: international standards, Chilean-style taxes on short-term foreign borrowing, greater exchange rate flexibility, and collective-action clauses in loan contracts to create an alternative to ever-bigger IMF bailouts. These four elements are designed to strengthen crisis prevention, moderate the severity of crises when they take place, speed the process of recovery, and contain moral hazard in international financial markets. My own assessment is that these reforms, if successfully implemented, will succeed in making the world a safer financial place.
