5-0 out of 5 stars Passion for Bridges
If you take bridges for granted, perhaps as part of a daily commute, you likely won't again after reading Robert Cortright's lovingly assembled book.

Whether it be a multi-century old stone bridge in the old world or a recently built cable-stayed structure, you can't help but pause to admire the hundreds of examples of man's handiwork in Bridging the World.

Grouped by the method of construction used, these bridges are a tribute to man's ingenuity and his need to communicate. Featuring bridges from almost 30 countries and from 6 continents, the book is guaranteed to leave you wanting to see more, perhaps even in your own locale.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely beautiful.
BRIDGING THE WORLD would make a wonderful gift for anyone with an interest in engineering or architecture, an armchair traveler or history buff, or anyone who just likes beautiful photography. Cortright is a retired American banker who just loves bridges. This is his third book filled with bridge photos, and he's obviously very good at his craft. The photos are gorgeous, displaying bridges from all over the world, with 306 clear, colorful photos from 28 countries and six continents.

The photography is exquisite -- you can see the individual cables, the shadows on the water or canyon beneath the structure, and the texture of the stones and other materials used in the bridge construction. The book arranges the bridges more or less chronologically or by length of span. The photos are divided by method of construction used in the bridge -- beam, arch, suspension, cable-stayed, aqueducts and special bridges. The book begins with structures built in ancient times and moves on to huge, modern works of art. To see several of the photos, visit www.bridgeink.com. Strongly recommended, especially as a gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Seeing things Anew
We usually see bridges as an extension of the road we're on, never realizing that every bridge is a great venture unto itself, where creativity, engineering genius and big capital all come into play.
Mr. Cortright's book highlights the most beautiful and unusual bridges from around the world, covering a span of nearly 3000 years. They're all here, from ancient Roman arches to extravagant futuristic showpieces.Whether the locale is Buenos Aires or Shanghai, you'll find yourself daydreaming about who built these bridges and what it would be like to cross them.I picked up this book in an odd moment and found myself captivated for hours.

Ideal for bridge fans, but even better for those who simply like to travel in their imagination.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Armchair Travel
The author of this book, Robert Cortright, is an obvious enthusiast of Bridges and has travelled the world to capture this fine collection of original photographs of his favourite subject matter. Bridges, ancient and modern, of many lands are all there. His enthusiasm shines through with the informative and often entertaining captions. I enjoyed his work from the comfort of my armchair but felt that I was at his side when the camera shutter clicked.

5-0 out of 5 stars Crossing Bridges
We're always crossing bridges, both literally and figuratively, rarely taking time to see the bridge.Cortright's book brings us some of the wonderful sights we may have missed, with just enough text detail to inspire appreciation of the challenges bridge builders have faced and surmounted. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars If you just can't get enough of Castle Neuschwanstein...
Yes, I know you have seen many pictures of the castle before, but this book is like a collection of the different views and during different seasons. I've never seen more idylic settings for a castle than in the pages of this book. The picture taken in the winter with a dusting of snow blanketing the landscape is incredibly dream-like. It evokes thoughts of fairy tales & fantasy.

The book does have floorplans of the castle all on one page that include three levels of the building. I would think there are more levels & plans, but perhaps that is all that was allowed to display to the public.

I'm glad I got the book because I have visited the castle and it is one of my all-time favorites. However, I rate it only 4 stars because it is a steep price to pay (over $40) for only 60 pages.

4-0 out of 5 stars Neuschwanstein - 1999
An excellant presentation of the castle. The first part of the book is narrative (both English and German) relating to design and construction, including the various architectural styles that co-exist. I found some of the architectural comparisons difficult to follow. This section also details King Ludwig's constant demands for design changes, and advanced construction technologies necessary to create this Baravian wonder. Following this are plan views identifying all buildings and rooms of the castle. The remainder has surpurb photographs showing the exterior from several directions and in different seasons and interior photos presenting all major rooms as well as many areas not available to tourists, such as the unfinished second floor. ... Book Description

New Preface by Rabbi Arthur Hertzberg.

Historical Essay by Yom Tov Assis.

For nearly two millennia, from 70 C.E. and the Roman conquest of Jerusalem to 1948 and the founding of Israel, the Jewish people were without a homeland. But in their wanderings the tradition of building synagogues continued, not only as a refuge for their beliefs but as a testament to their strength and their faith as a people. And I Shall Dwell Among Them preserves the irreplaceable spiritual, architectural and cultural significance of these structures. This is the first study to document the synagogues of the Jewish diaspora with both scholarly depth and photographic excellence. Images include synagogues from Morocco, Italy, Hungary, India, Spain, and elsewhere throughout the world where Jews settled -- many presented for the first time in photographs.

Book Description

Damascus, reputed to be the world's oldest continually inhabited city, has enjoyed a history of immense grandeur, enormous political and mercantile power, and great cultural and artistic achievement. In addition to some of Islam's most magnificent architecture, such as the Umayyad Mosque, the city boasts a heritage of fairy-tale palaces and sumptuous private houses. Sadly, many of them are in urgent need of restoration. Brigid Keenan and Tim Beddow have set out to record these priceless architectural gems and to reveal them to the world at large. They were given unprecedented access to the inner, "hidden" city, which has resulted in a book that will be of immense importance to all concerned with the heritage of architecture in the Islamic world. The text first sets the historical scene, describing the growth and fortunes of Damascus through the ages. It continues with an account of its architecture and way of life, and concludes with descriptions of individual houses and of the people who built and lived in them. The superb photographs include façades, courtyards, alleyways, and fountains, and the breathtaking interiors that often lie behind the unassuming walls of the old town, with exquisite details in stone, wood, paint, marble, plaster, glass, and mother-of-pearl. The whole forms a convincing and elegiac plea for the preservation of the heart of this historic ancient capital. 214 illustrations, 171 in color. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful must-have book for anyone who loves Damascus
This book is a must for anyone who loves Damascus and is concerned about its deterioration. It's a must for any Damascene expatriate's living room coffee table book collection for sure. The photographs are absolutely stunning and the text is interesting and engaging. One flaw, however is that I would have liked to see the photographs and the text regarding specific houses cross-referenced, (perhaps in the appendix of houses' names in the back of the book) as photographs and texts about specific houses are scattered throughout the book and you have to find all the references yourself--very annoying. Other than that, it is a wonderful book for showing off a unique aspect of our beloved city. Some of these houses are being used as sets for Syrian soap operas-- look closely and you might recognize some!

5-0 out of 5 stars poignant beauty
This book documents a lifestyle that we can only know through writings and recollections, mostly by English expatriates and scholars. The houses themselves are gradually falling into decay, which is shameful, but which appears to be the fate of so many great architectural treasures of the past. I was charmed by the magnificence that one can sense (through the photographs), however dimmed by present squalor, and resolved that if I could, somehow, I would try to recreate the feeling; I know that's quite silly but even so it would be marvelous to have a fountain right by one's door and great trees growing inside one's living quarters. I loved the black, red, and white horizontal stripes and the mother-of-pearl-inlaid furniture, the inlaid Arab designs, the 20' ceilings and the beautiful arches. I also loved the recollections of Isabel and Richard Burton, and Jane Digby, these people were triumphantly confident and strode through life with none of the fright and nerves that we contemporary readers seem to have...and rightly so. I loved this book, and hopefully it will assist in the preservation of the great houses of Old Syria.

5-0 out of 5 stars Will delight students of Islamic culture
Brigid Keenan's informative and highly recommended text comprising Damascus: Hidden Treasures Of The Old City, is enhanced throughout with 214 illustrations and photographs (171 in color) by Tim Beddow. This superb introduction to the architectural grandeur of Damascus incudes descriptions of individual houses and the people who built and lived in them. The amazing photographs reveal the facades, courtyards, alleyways , fountains and amazing interiors behind unassuming walls will delight students of Islamic culture, architecture, history, and lifestyles. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars THE STANDARD for Camera Collectors!
I cannot say it any better than the many other reviewers who have indicated that this is the "bible" of camera collecting references! Exhaustive references, historic information, pictures, auction selling prices, the "whole nine yards!"

The only camera reference book better than this one is Jim McKeown's next edition!

5-0 out of 5 stars All Inclusive Guide to Camera Pricing
My McKeown's price guide has been an invaluable tool in selling old camera's at online auction sites. It not only gives you a solid idea of what a camera is worth, but it many cases it gives you some history and background as well.

There are pictures of almost every camera listed to help you identify your exact model, and it explains in detail the difference between similar models.

I can't think of anything that could be added to make this a more complete pricing guide.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cameras in Alaska
I use this book often, I have found that in addition to the obveous use (prise guide) there is a fair amount of history that helped with research. Contains much useful information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Guide to Antique Cameras
I have had the pleasure of owning (and still own) the 1976 Guide To Antique Cameras by Mckeown. It has been many years since then and the price for a guide has really risen. As an Antique dealer I found myself getting interested in collectible cameras once again. I knew I needed a guide and reviewed a 1996 copy a friend owned my McKeowen and was convinced this is the one to own. My library consists of at least 200 books on Antiques and 50 price guides on Art, Jewelry, clothing, Orientalia to name a few. I hesitated at the price for this guide, but after reasearching the options I knew this was the concise price guide for me. I own it and am happy I chose it and it makes me MONEY just owning it. I have 30 years of Amatuer collecting and selling under my belt and I really don't need a price guide just my wits, (that's what I told myself) but it just makes it soooo easy to reinforce my experience with a reference and value basis for my risks. Leica III,a,b,c,g, Mentor Reflex, Zeiss-Ikon Miroflex, Robot 35mm, Hasselblad, Kodak Field Cameras, Sept 35mm camera projector, TDC 3d projector & Nikon Cameras are a few of the cameras I have used this informational price guide in evaluating.

5-0 out of 5 stars McKeown Is One Of The Ultimate Authorities on Cameras
Jim McKeown's books are the most comprehensive sources of accurate information on cameras in the world. Period. Other books may give more information on specific cameras, but if you are to have but one source to refer to,choose McKeown. He will never disappoint you.
Another wonderful camera expert and writer (they don't always go together) is Ivor Matanle. His two books are treasures. But if you want facts, go with McKeown. You will return over and over to his book. Speaking face to face with him is most rewarding. You realize you are learning from one of the world authorities.
Wonderful pictures, camera values (prices) rarity, etc. This book contains cameras even experts haven't heard about. But McKeown is the expert of experts, and you will keep this large, heavy, over 900 page book near just for the fun of reading it. Am I enthused? Yes! I have bought his books since the 4th edition in 1983-84, and always been pleased.
A lengthy review? Yes, but this book deserves much praise! ... Read more

The long and illustrious career of architectural photographer JuliusShulman is a case study in how being in the right place at the right time canmake one an eyewitness to history. In 1936, Shulman, a young slacker with afondness for snapping pictures, took a few casual shots of a Los Angeles housethat recently had been designed by a young architect whose wife was acquaintedwith Shulman's sister. The house happened to be the Kun House, and thearchitect, who liked the shots and commissioned more, happened to be thefledgling Richard Neutra. In short order, Neutra arranged for Shulman tophotograph the works of Raphael Soriano, Rudolph Schindler, Gregory Ain, J.R.Davidson, and other colleagues who were pioneering the International style onthe West Coast and throughout the U.S. By the 1950s, Shulman was shooting thework of Mies and Wright--by 1962, when Shulman published the first edition ofthis guide to the craft and business of architectural photography, his work wasas inextricably linked with the modern movement in design as was BereniceAbbott's with Paris's Lost Generation.

For both those who are and aren't familiar with Shulman's oeuvre, thisdelightful updated edition of his stolidly titled Photographing Architectureand Interiorsmakes it completely clear why and how he forged that artisticand professional alliance with the masters of modernism. As a how-to book forboth budding and experienced architectural photographers, it's still invaluable.Camera technology and changes in the profession itself might have dated some ofthe text here, but most of it focuses on principles and techniques thattranscend matters of film- or camera-make, and addresses every possible aspectof the craft--from composition, angles, lenses, and lighting (for both exteriorsand interiors, which Shulman always saw as contiguous) to shooting with bothblack-and-white and color film, darkroom manipulation, and special tips forresidential, commercial, and landscape work. But, even if the book had no maintext, the hundreds of shots of his own work (and their excellent "how I got thatshot" captions) would speak and educate for themselves, and are what make thisbook such a classic for architectural shutterbugs and general lovers of modernarchitecture alike. It's simply a dramatically arranged and lighted panorama ofthe boldest design of the postwar era, with a particular emphasis on theglamorous residential projects of a brashly affluent Southern California, whereShulman did most of his work. The book abounds with outdoor and indoor shots ofthe sleekly linear homes of Soriano, Wright, Thornton Ladd, William Pereira,John Lautner, Cliff May, and many others; all of their drop-dead-cool rec rooms, swimming pools, pavilions and terraces, glass walls, and surrounding hillscapescaptured with angles and lighting that compare to Orson Welles or Hitchcock intheir drama and intrigue. There's also great representation of Shulman'scommercial work here, too--to this day, no one has made such femmes fatales ofcorporate modernism as the Seagram Building, Lever House, and Pei's Mile-HighCenter in Denver look as sexy as Shulman did, and his shots of Charles Luckman'shigh-tech industrial shrines, like General Dynamics Astronautics in San Diego, are a sheer blast from an era that was besotted with the glamour of science, space, and the Bomb. There's a terrific interview with Shulman, up front, andthe book concludes with his walk-through case study of the shoot for an entireBel Air house.

But it's Shulman's decades-long interpretation of the work of his first client,Neutra, that attained a perfection on the level of such other collaborations ofthe era as Nelson Riddle's Capitol arrangements for Frank Sinatra or Hubert deGivenchy's couture for Audrey Hepburn. Fittingly, in the eloquent introductionthat he wrote for this book, Neutra said of an artist of Shulman's rank, "Withone gesture, he may evoke untold illusions ... [he] can and does speak to humansouls." To wit, this timeless volume opens with those fateful first shots of theKun House, its gleamingly white and shockingly stark facades staring out overthe raw hills of Southern California. No matter that Shulman "snapped" them withhis Eastman Vest-Pocket Camera; amid his vertiginous angles and boldchiaroscuro, one senses that something big is about to happen in Americanarchitecture. Of course, as we all know now, something did happen--and, as thisupdate of an architectural classic makes clear, no one documented it as lucidlyor stylishly as the richly talented Mr. Shulman. --Timothy Murphy ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good as a reprint of an old classic might be
Shulman was the master. The guy was lucky enough to breed the fresh air of modernism and make the most of it throughout his career. The study of his photographs is therefore mandatory for any contemporary architecture photographer and any insight into his work is a gift. This book is such a gift, although most of the techniques highlighted are definitely outdated. Personally I found revealing the case study illustrated at the end of the book. Buy it for the insights, leaving technique to other sources.

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect
I learned a lot from this book. The only problem is that I was under the impression that it was updated, but it isn't really, and it was originally published in 1962. The only new information is an intro by Shulman and an interview with him. So, although his explanations and examples taught me a lot about light, use of camera movements and the trade of the architectural photographer, and there are many fantastic photos (of course), I found myself skimming through several sections which give completely outdated information on things like proper flash bulb size, modern new light meters (from the 50s) and places to publish photos (like Life magazine).

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best book about architectural photographing
I'm a professional photographer, still young, and I work mainly with architectural subjects; well, this book is one of the most astonishing and well written I've ever read. All the photographs are simply wonderful, explanations are useful, too. This is a book I always like to read and read it again. Shulman made the history of architectural and interiors photographing, and his photographs are still so amazing, effective and at the time simple to be "read", that you only learn from each shot. The notes about the composition and lighting are, nowadays, still solid milestones to be mastered from beginners to pros. I strongly suggest this book !! ... Read more

Book Description

Since the late 1980s, Catherine Opie's interest in the motif of the visual road trip has resulted in photographs that sumultaneously document and question the self-constructed identities of the people and places that characterize America. From the freeways of Los Angeles to the downtown of St. Louis and the Wall Street district of New York, Opie now turns her camera to the skyways and icehouses of the Twin Cities. The culmination of a year-long commission from the Walker Art Center, Skyways and Icehouses provides a meditative portrait of a locale, at once a straight-forward documentation and an inquiring social psycho-geography, an exploration of those symbolic architectures often taken for granted. Personal anecdotes, memories, and stories fron Minnesota residents animate Opie's haunting landscapes.

Book Description

While the computer has made sweeping transparent planes and polished metal details comonplace, at least in renderings, few architects are actually building these images, and none with the craft and imagination of Smith-Miller + Hawkinson. This New York-based practice has recently vaulted into international prominence with the completion of their Glass Museum in Corning, New York. Built entirely of glass walls held in place by marine-quality fittings, this building has stunned the world with its sensuous qualities of transparency, reflection, and retraction. Between Spaces is a collaboration between the architects and the world-famous photographer Judith Turner, whose seminal book Judith Turner Photographs Five Architects established a new way of looking at architectural photography upon its publication two decades ago.Her dramatic duotone photographs illustrate the details, complexity, and qualities of light and space found inn Smith-Miller + Hawkinson's architecture. This new monograph features in-depth examinations of five recently constructed projects--Corning Glass Center, Loft for Robert Greenburg, InsideOut/Fabrications, North Carolina Musuem of Art Amphitheater & Outdoor Cinema, and Pier 11--and two unbuilt projects--Ferry Terminal Guidlines and Shilla-Daechi Bulding. This beautiful volume is lavishly illustrated with plans, models, and stunning tour-de-force photography. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Maine: The Home Place
When I opened Maine: The Home Place, I didn't know how much I was opening up. I looked through it, then I realized I needed to look into it: I did so at two pages a day until I went through the book. I especially love two of the pictures (although each page and picture looked more like a composition in a painting than a camera capturing a scene): The Androscoggin at Bethel, November and North Pond, Greenwood, October. There is a disarming directness in the simple presentation that drew me into the pictures, and into myself. The captions reminded me these places are here, in this world. What I found myself doing since I opened Maine: The Home Place is seeing myself and the world around me differently. Cezanne says that "Art is a harmony parallel to nature." I am wonderfully confused by Murad's presentation of nature and art that has gotten into my heart through my eyes. What more can you ask from a book than to make the world and yourself more alive? Maine: The Home Place is a book that will do that year after year, picture after picture. Great job, Murad Sayen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Energy in Tranquility
The thing that strikes you as you turn the lush pages--the land and seascapes, the faces--is the surface sense of calm. And yet, below those surfaces there is always a suggestion of great energy, of processes being carried out. In the cover photo, for instance: a country church, maple trees in their October regalia, a cemetery, the cornstubble foreground--lies the hint that things are in motion, even there below the ground. The world is moving toward a new incarnation.

This dualism--or energy and calm--kept me turning pages, forward and back, over a period of many days, looking closely at colors, faces, cloud formations, ice crystals on a pond, dawn sunlight on a lighthouse.

At first I quibbled that Sayen has confined his camera to so few regions of the state; and yet, in truth, this only reminds us that art, in order to be universal, must be local. To develop the kind of intimacy that Sayen (a confessed "outsider") obviously has with his subject, it is necessary to keep it focused.

With "Maine: The Home Place", Murad Sayen has created a masterful book, far more than another of the garishly colored "coffee table" books that publishers seem to crank out each year. This is a book that bears repeated readings, and which, for me, continues to offer fresh discoveries. In addition to the photographs, there is a series of elegantly written essays and photographer's notes. For anyone looking to be delighted and deeply moved by the complexity within simplicity, "Maine: The Home Place" is a volume that will do that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic photos
Maine The Home Place by Murad Sayen is an especially appealing photography book. Not only is this book visually pleasing as you view beautiful scenes in Maine, but it also is very emotive as you also "feel" Maine. The quality of the photos is superior and most of them look as much like paintings as photos. If you are ever fortunate enough to look through this book, go directly to page 28 ( one of my favorites)and enjoy the compostion of hands. There have been numerous artists who have highlighted hands in their composition but never with the unique approach that this one does. I have only had this book on my coffee table for one month, and have already "sold" 5 copies. People's responses were so positive that 5 lucky people will be getting this book for Christmas. Maybe you could be lucky also. If Maine was ever your home, I think you will enjoy having this book around as much as I have, and Maine was never my home.

5-0 out of 5 stars Maine: The Home Place
Murad Sayen shows us in his amazing pictoral that Maine is more than a magnificent coastline dotted with harbors and lighthouses. His photographs and essays capture the essence and beauty of Maine that those of us who are fortunate to live here can now share with the rest of the world.

He is masterful in his use of lighting. The effect is mystical and invokes a strong emotional response to his work. For all those who want an unlimited opportunity to escape to Maine, whenever the spirit moves you, I highly recommend Maine: The Home Place.....the way life is!

5-0 out of 5 stars Kitchen table book
This is a magnificent, beautiful book. We left it open on the kitchen table, and everyone who passed by turned to a new, exquisite image. I've now snatched it back to my office and expect to browse repeatedly when I have a chance for a cup of coffee and a brief get-away moment. It is truly a gift. ... Read more

Book Description

These breathtaking aerial shots of ancient and modern labyrinths and mazes offer an exciting new perspective on an age-old phenomenon, and an opportunity to better understand its meaning.

Allegories for life's uncertainty, labyrinths and mazes are ancient symbols that echo our own spiritual quests, transformations, and yearnings to find the right path.Jurgen Hohmuth used a custom-made camera attached to a miniature dirigible to photograph the labyrinths and mazes in this stunning book. The resulting low-altitude aerial photographs capture in astonishing detail the designs, textures, and settings that make each structure unique.

Presented in large full-color images, these gems of architectural landscaping take all forms and sizes, comprising an endless variety of materials: mosaics, cornstalks, sunflowers, stones, even beer crates.Laden with history, some labyrinths and mazes date back to the Bronze Age; grace the floors of medieval cathedrals; and spring up from the lawns of country estates.Modern incarnations are found in amusement parks, farmers' fields, and traffic circles.Lending depth to Hohmuth's photographs are brief essays from experts in the field, including Adrian Fisher, the world's foremost designer of labyrinths and mazes, as well as an innovative layout design that echoes the spirit of the labyrinth.Seen from a bird's-eye view, these man-made spiritual puzzles speak to us more eloquently than ever. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good old pictures, but that's about all
Although the book is full of great old photos from the Houston Public Library's collection, the new photography is below par and the text often contains errors -- for example, it gives two different death dates for philanthropist George Hermann and misidentifies the founder of Foley's department store.

It's a disappointment that this book could have been a solid, if brief, historic resource, but instead it's just mediocre. And it's especially disappointing to learn that the author is a Houston-based writer who could have verified facts with just a big of legwork.

Buy it for the old photos, but don't quote any of the information.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a must have if you care for the city of Houston
Wondering what to give your friends for the holidays? I plan on giving it to both friends and customers! This coffe table quality book is beautiful and full of interesting stories and photos of Houston as it was long ago compared to how you can observe it today. You will find a combination of humor and nostalgia, beauty and reality: a heart-warming depiction of the Bayou City. I'll read it again and again. ... Read more
