5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE FOR ANY TRUE MADONNA FAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I purchased this book when it was originally released for $50.00.I have recently seen them going for about $250.00 and up.If you own it save it.This book will probably never go back into print again.I strongly recommend this book. It has amazing photos by Steven Meisel.Interesting pictures featuring Madonna,Isabella Rosellini,Ingrid Casares,Naomi Campbell,Big Daddy Kane, and yes even Vanilla Ice.This book will go down in history never before has a singer/actress and now writer released a book which has caused so much controversy.

5-0 out of 5 stars EROTICA,SEX AND ROMANCE!
That just about sums up the content of this book. Its just a shame that it has taken some people this long to realise what a true work of art this book really is. Even the most controversial scenes are works of art. I think that she looks best in the picture where she is leaning over a wall with vanilla ice leaning behind her, also the one where she is lying back (topless) on a sheepskin rug smoking a ciggarette,oh yes, and who could forget the famous scene where she is hitch-hiking in the nude with only a cigarette and handbag as her fashion accessories! PURE CLASS! The only fault which i could pick would be the the magazine thing at the end which i found a bit tacky! but hey, it made me laugh. Theres no doubt that madonna is the undisputed diva of the nineties! Who else could create so much controversy with one book? Of all the derogatory things which have been said about madonna for doing this, it all goes to show just how two-faced society really is! TRUE GIRL POWER!- YOU GO GIRL!

4-0 out of 5 stars Dita the mistress of fetish!
Creatively thought out and daring concept, the book is more along the lines of fetish and erotica. Maybe this was the inspiration for much of the current fetish/erotica/BDSM scene?
to be read with an open mind and appreciation for fetish.

1-0 out of 5 stars Depraved rubbish by an aging skank?
People are dumb enough to buy anything. You can usually find this in the dollar store.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book i've seen that was published in the 90's
I've never been a huge madonna fan but i did like listen to her music sometimes. And i figured this book might be a good investment so i bought it and i now have decided to start collectig madonna stuff. I think this is an exelint book and a must for the collection of any madonna fan. ... Read more

Book Description

Sante D'Orazio is one of the most important image-makers working in the area of fashion and editorial photography today. Manifested in the sexy and vibrant campaigns he has produced for clients such as Versace, Tommy Hilfiger, Victoria's Secret, Revlon, and L'Oreal, D'Orazio's signature style-a unique blend of art and commerce-has become a mainstay of the fashion industry. Since the 1980s, the photographer has also worked editorially for numerous magazines including American Vogue, Esquire, Town & Country, Detour, Max, Interview and Vanity Fair. In this follow-up to his enormously successful first book, A Private View (1998), D'Orazio again presents his most thrilling images of supermodels like Kate Moss, Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford, and Helena Christenson, while sharing his best portraits of such entertainment personalities as Catherine Zeta-Jones, Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey, Cameron Diaz, Johnny Depp, Sean Penn, and Antonio Banderas. Produced in a large format design, and exquisitely printed on fine Italian paper, Sante D'Orazio, Photographs is certain to delight anyone interested in the art of fashion and portrait photography. Containing loads of previously unpublished material as well as D'Orazio's classic editorial work, Sante D'Orazio: Photographs is a sexy tribute to one of today's most impressive photographers. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars private view redux
I hate to post something unenthusiastic about such an exciting photographer, but "Photographs" was somewhat dissapointing for me -- I'd read/viewed with great interested his previous book, "a private view" -- which was fantastic. "Photographs" brings back a lot of those same images in a larger format, on worse paper, without the exciting layout and at twice the price. (Had "private view" not been published or were it out of print, I would have rated this book higher.) I think D'Orazio is one of the most exciting fashion photographers working today and I was ultimately saddened that there's not a whole new books worth of photographs here. If you have the option, buy "a private view" instead.

3-0 out of 5 stars Relaxed Female Nudes
If photography books were rated by how relaxed, natural, and open the models are, this book would be a five star book. Many of these images have not been published or shown before.

Before going further, be aware that this book contains many tasteful female nudes and one male nude. If this book were a motion picture, it would probably have an "R" rating.

The book has two serious flaws. First, many of the two-page spreads are devastated by the center crease of the binding. The images should be been skipped or reproduced differently. Second, many of the images are vapid. Whenever Mr. D'Orazio moves away from doing a female nude in motion or with a prop, there's often not much there.

The best of the book is outstanding, and if you overlook the spoiled and uninspiring images, you will be very pleased. Mr. D'Orazio at his best has good talent in composition and use of shadows that make his work much more interesting. When he models work with a prop, whether a cigarette or something more substantial like an easel or a skull, magical things usually happen. The book uses a very fine quality matte paper that reproduces the subtle shadings well.

His unadorned and propless female nudes are a tour de force in one sense. He shows you something you haven't seen before in these people (most of whom are celebrities). Few photographers can accomplish so much with so little, but the viewer (unless totally addicted to the celebrity) wants a bit more.

I found Mr. D'Orazio's portraits of men and humanless scenes much less rewarding. Julian Schnabel and Mike Tyson were the exceptions. He captured something there that was quite remarkable.

As Mr. Yau says in his brief essay, "His subjects seem to have stopped for a moment, relaxed and let down their guard." "Some have even transformed themselves into someone unexpected . . . ." For example, you will see a different side of Julia Roberts. "The men . . . project their image of masculinity . . . ." "All of this D'Orazio captures with a painter's eye . . . ." I disagree with that last comment. The images seem to me to be much more sculptural than painterly, and that is to the good.

Here are my favorites:

Kristen McMenamy, 1986, Shelter Island, New York

Eva Herzigova, 1996, Long Island, New York

Sofia Loren, 1999, Milano, Italy

Julia Roberts, 1996, Culver City, California

Frederique, 1996, St. Barth's

Suzanne Lanza, 1986, Peconic Lodge, Shelter Island, New York

Eva Amurri, 1999, New York City (this is quite remarkable and appears on the back of the book's dust jacket)

Mike Tyson (the second one), 1996, Las Vegas, Nevada

Sylvester Stallone, 1996, New York City

Claudia Schiffer, 2000, London

Eva Amurri and Susan Sarandon, 1999, New York City

Polly Mellen and Leilani, 1992, New York City

Kate Moss, 1995, Glen Cove, New York

Julian Schnabel, 1990, (paint splattered with canvas and easel), Montauk, New York

Courtney Love, 1999, Los Angeles, California

Stella Schnabel with Skull, 1999, New York City

Drew Barrymore, 1993, Hollywood, California

After you enjoy this book, I suggest that you think about what the book teaches about relaxation. When do you drop your "social mask" to be relaxed and experience yourself more fully? Those who are most relaxed here, look most alive. How can you achieve this more often and benefit from it?

Take off your cares and worries!

5-0 out of 5 stars A stellar work!
Finally, a book of celebrity photographs which transcends the formula of merely exposing famous skin! Here is a book of rare and intimate sensuality which brings to the viewer's eye a private and lush sensuality which seems coaxed out of the sitters and never forced. D'Orazio is a genius and this book is one of the most amazing gifts I have received in years. I am buying it for several friends as it is a surefire, sophisticated winner. MORE!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Class & Quality for Grown Ups
A classy arrangement of fashion and famous, in the flesh. Top quality paper and dense inks ensure faithful and luscious reproductions without MTV-in-your-face-image-overcrowding. I bought this book as a gift for my husband; I probably should have bought 2 -- one for pin-ups and one for the coffee table!

5-0 out of 5 stars Impressive.
Sensual intriguing images showcase D'Orazio's artful style. An elegant and lush volume of work that will add spice to my personal collection. D'Orazio has a style all his own that is truly inspirational. I love this book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A thought-provoking collection of Mapplethorpe's sex picture
This collection of pictures is bound in a good quality cover and printed on a glossy paper of reasonable quality.

The images themselves are, in the main, sex pictures; S&M pictures; and a few portraits. The sex pictures are quite grotesque, concentrating as they do on the pain, blood, urine, bondage and so on. Whether you'll enjoy these depends on your view of the subject. Personally, I didn't find them uplifting or illuminating. The models were sullen, looked unhappy, or downright sad: but then I suppose if your... has been nailed to a plank you're entitled to be a little shaken!

The few portraits included in this volume were entirely unpleasing, and not representative of Mapplethorpe's better work. They offered no real insight ot the subjects, who remained cold and aloof, detached it seems from the process of making art.

This is a collection of many of Mapplethorpe's more 'sensational' and 'shocking' images. Whether you are affronted or not they do deserve inspection, if only to see what the 'conservatives' tried to ban. You might actually feel repulsed and agree that these pictures are not art but pornography.

2-0 out of 5 stars One word: Ouch
You can always debate whether this book is "art" or not, but the fact is I am worried about what happened to some of the subjects. Helmut? Are you okay? I think Mapplethorpe wanted to shock, and he did, but I found the pictures had too much pain in them to be appreciated. I was deadened to what Mapplethorpe wanted to say, if he wanted to say anything at all. Ouch, ouch, ouch.

3-0 out of 5 stars very good book
artistic and powerful, i recommend it

5-0 out of 5 stars Art Or Trash? The Book Which Will Decide Your Vote!
Probably the most reviled book at Amazon because of its sexual explictness of the "out there" gay life led before AIDS, complete with bondage, S&M and even torture. Yet Mapplethorpe was artist enough to make many of the images compelling and haunting plus horrific yet eye/heart stopping. There are even self portraits of Mapplethorpe at the height of his own physical beauty before he too would be ravaged and killed by AIDS. I come down solidly on the side of the "This is art" contenders but caution you that this book is not for the rigid, the squeamish or minors. Mapplethorpe captured an extreme moment in time, when controversial sexual behavior came out to the public and shoved itself in the public's face, clamoring to be viewed and defying us to look away. I, for one, could not look away.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Posthumous success, whether you like it or not!
This is a fabulous collection of the very subject matter that turned the art world on end. These pictures, however explicit and extreme in subject matter push the more important issue of artistic freedom. Without this freedom we all suffer. Censorship has somehow told us that we can be harmed by the images we look at...more harmful is the forced conformity that ensues when creativity is left for others to decide what is or isn't done in the name of artistic freedom. Having left his flowers and portraits in their own respective niches, his artistic freedom rings clear as a bell with this collection. ... Read more

Girls, girls, girls. And well-endowed boys. They're the subjects of Thomas Ruff Nudes, a book of photographs by a well-known German artist best known for his searching images of faces, night skies and architecture. The new photographs were pulled off Internet porn sites and enlarged, colored and blurred by the artist. The fascinating thing about these nudes is the way the indistinct tumble of imagery replicates the physical sensation of sex. Everything is hazy, incomplete, replete with longing--a giddy carnival of orifices and sex organs. Skin is suffused with the blush of sexual arousal. Women offer themselves to unseen men and to one another. Some might say that Ruff is "making a statement" about the easy availability of pornography. Nonsense. He is documenting, in his painterly way, the elemental human urges that attract us to each other’s flesh. The most interesting images in the book are the most abstract, revealing sexual appetite as the eternal pursuit of another body’s knobs and holes. Accompanying the photographs is an earthy, supposedly fictional, fragment by the controversial French novelist Michel Houellebecq. The narrator reminisces about the years when he and his wife visited sex clubs on the Riviera. He writes of "dark rooms where people make love without choosing partners, submerged in the flux of tactile sensation." This is the world of Ruff's most successful photographs, a place where the staginess of pornography is transformed into the realm of pure desire. --Cathy Curtis ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I liked this CD
I thought the images were of good quality and the cd was worth the money. If you like pictures of beautiful butts then this cd will turn you on. If you're looking for art museum masterpieces then this probably is not what you'll want.

1-0 out of 5 stars tiny images, all stolen content
Beware, this is simply a collection of images freely available on the internet, collected and made into a disk. This in itself would not be so bad, in fact it would be very much worth it given the time it saves you to find them. However, the quality of the images is terrible. They are simply tiny in the 600 by 400 pixel range. In fact 100s of the exact same images on this cd exist in larger form on the net. Most likely Mr. Ryder is breaking the law, many of those images are expressly copyrighted, and in fact were originally published in book form in Japan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Nude Photo CD!
Great collection of nude photos of one of the most beautiful parts of the female anatomny, must have for those fanny fans out there. Tasteful shots without the crudeness of some skin magazines. Overall good buy for the money.

1-0 out of 5 stars Can they sell this free stuff?
I can't believe Amazon is selling this - or can, legally (not that I'm an expert). Bottoms Up is a collection of photos that look like they could have been collected from internet porn site free pages. I assume Asian Dreams and Latin Lust are the same way. Many of the files have website ID's on them. You can get this stuff sent free to your e-mail every day if you don't block it.

I gave this one star because if I gave it zero you might think I just forgot.

Book Description

Herb Ritts is one of the most notorious and successful photographers working today. The Los Angeles-based imagemaker has created portfolios for Vogue, Vanity Fair, and other magazines, done movie ads and music videos, and worked with fashion-world clients such as Calvin Klein and Giorgio Armani. This sumptuous catalogue, published to accompany an exhibition at the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain in Paris, includes an interview with Herb Ritts. One hundred photographs, some previously unpublished, exemplify the rigorous, disconcerting work of one of the most remarkable photographers of the contemporary art, fashion, and entertainment worlds. Herb Ritts's subjects include Antonio Banderas, Sandra Bernhard, Louise Bourgeois,Charles Bukowski, William S. Burroughs, Francesco Clemente, Joseph Fiennes, Dizzy Gillespie, Mel Gibson, Keith Haring, Stephen Hawking, Michael Jordan, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, B. B. 5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful Black & White Imagery
As an amateur photographer, I have always found Herb Ritts to be one of the greatest modern photographers living. Similiar to many celebrity photographers such as Richard Avedon, David LaChapelle, and Annie Liebowitz, Ritts captures the essence that is celebrity perfectly. Whether it is the photograph of Madonna and Sean Pean as a loving couple, or a gathering of today's top supermodels (all nude) Ritts has an eye for detail, as well as an approach few photographers nowadays don't utilize, direct communication with your subjects. In the past (and even in the present) celebrity photography can be a pain as many celebrities tend to want their agents around them whenever there is a shoot.

Many of Ritts photographs in this compilation happen to be of a homoerotic nature. Ritts, who is openly gay, captures the essence of male sexuality perfect, and the results can be enjoyed by anyone regardless of their orientation.

I hope in the future Ritts comes out with another huge compilation of his work. His recent work with such celebrities such as Monica Lewinsky and Janet Jackson should be published in a volume, but for the meanwhile, purchase this book for your coffee table or library. It will make an interesting topic of conversation with anyone. Ritts is pure genius!

5-0 out of 5 stars Herb Ritts: Work
I was mesmorized by this book! Herb Ritts has the ability to not ownly create a beautiful portrait, but to capture I personality of his models. Each photograph tells a fabulous story of fantasy, glamour, and often just everyday life. I would highly recommend this collection. Among my favorite celebrity photos: Johnny Depp on the set of Edward Scissorhands, Jim Carrey dressed as a Mermaid, Tom Cruise on the set of Mission Impossible 2, the tattooed arm of Axle Rose, and a mysterious grin by Roy Lichtenstein. These photos are also large enough (most are at least 8x10) to remove and frame.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful coffee table book & conversation piece
I received this book as a gift. I can't tell you how many times at a party or get-together at our home someone has picked this up, and then it has become the topic of conversation. The book gets passed around the entire night because everyone wants to look at it, and once someone starts flipping through the pages they simply can't put it down because they want to look at every image. Several of the photos are of celebrities, but they are somewhat disguised. Example: Cindy Crawford made up as a man. It is fun to do a "double take" as you try to guess who some of the subjects are. As always, Herb Ritts' images are masterpieces. This was a wonderful gift.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Mixed Bag of Photographs
This catalogue of the retrospective of Ritts' work in the mid 90's at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston by its very nature has a lot of photographs that are included in previous volumes: many of the nudes, the African photos, the series called Duo and "celebrity portraits." Unlike many celebrity photographers, Ritts was able to create photographs that rarely if ever are duplicates of either his or other artists' work. You get a good sense of that from looking at all of the small copies of all the photos published at the end of this volume. That is no small accomplishment. Many of the nudes and/or erotic photographs have been around for so long and reproduced so often that they have almost become cliches. For example, the series of "Fred With Tires." These show up in calendars, refrigerator magnets, posters ad nauseam. The nine photographs of Bill T. Jones, one of which graces the cover of this hefty volume, should be called "Eunuch, I-IX." The poor man has been castrated by the stroke of an airbrush. I assume we are politically rather than anatomically correct here. This show was clearly no repetition of the Mapplethorpe Exhibit in Cincinnati!

Celebrity photographs are often just that. They are interesting only if you know the model. A fine portrait photographer can shoot someone we do not know and make that person interesting to us. Many though certainly not all of Ritts' photos rise to that level. For that reason, he will always be revered as an artist. I would put the photos of Whoopi Goldberg, William Burroughs and Mike Ovitz in that category, to name three. Even if we did not know who these people are, Ritts makes us want to know them. Proof of this, at least for me, is that I was mesmerized by the photo of Ovitz and didn't have the slightest idea initially of who he was. These photographs are intriguing and draw the viewer in. Finally, for my money, the three incomparable shots of Eunice Kennedy Shriver are simply the best portraits in the book. The first time I leafed through this volume, these fantastic shots jumped out at me.

I treasure my signed copy of another of Ritts' books. I'm sorry that he will never take another photograph.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
Although, sadly, Herb Ritts has passed away I'm sure he'll be remembered as one of the greatest celebrity photographers ever. With that being said, I'll admit that I am NOT a Hollywood-glam-celebrity fanatic, and I hate public obsession with celebrities. However, I will admit my admiration of Herb Ritts' introverted and sophisticated images of Hollywood identities. I keep my copy of "Herb Ritts: Work" next to the wild and outgoing "Lachapelle Land" by David Lachapelle, which together show an interesting contrast in approach to celebrity photography.

The first third of the book is comprised of Herb Ritts' nudes and "unearthly" abstract nudes, most of them photographed in the 1980's. The remaining are photographs in Africa and his famous artist and celebrity portraits. One of my favorite photos is of photographer/sculptor Joel-Peter Witkin with his son, a rather down-to-earth and affectionate portrayal of such a "macabre-oriented" artist.

I was always intimidated by the price of this book, but I knew I had to have it. Luckly, I got a new 1st ed. copy for about thirty-bucks with online auction (I'm sure the seller was hitting himself on the head with it). However, I would've WELL paid $135+ on this as it is one of the most well-bound luxurious photography books I've seen. The book itself is finely printed, and I would definately recommend adding this "essential" to any monograph book collection. ... Read more

Book Description

Playboy celebrates its 50th anniversary with this lavish collection of the very best of the magazine's photography. More than 250 full-color photographs, chosen from the ten million images preserved in the Playboy archive, chronicle five decades of brilliant, life-affirming art. Playboy: 50 Years revisits the girl next door, the sex symbols, and the gods and goddesses who shaped our culture. It visually tracks the changing politics, fashions, and mores through the frenzied peak of the sexual revolution and beyond - from the almost nostalgic eroticism of the 50s bachelor, a martini his secret of seduction, to the highly charged images of modern sexuality. Celebrity models such as Raquel Welch and Cindy Crawford, along with interview subjects such as Mohammed Ali and Salvador Dali, and infamous bunnies such as Anna Nicole Smith and Pamela Anderson reveal all. Portfolios devoted to the bachelor pad, the perfect cocktail, fashion, and sports cars celebrate Playboy as the ultimate wish book. From the history-making red velvet shot of Marilyn Monroe, "posed with nothing on except the radio," to the highly charged images of such masters as Herb Ritts and Helmut Newton, this book is a breath-taking photographic tour de force. The definitive gift of the season, Playboy: 50 Years is also the only book being published in the fall to coincide with the launch of the magazine's 50th anniversary. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tasteful!
Women shun playboy with exploitation yells while men flock to the magazine racks to keep playboy an institute. The bottom line is that Playboy is a mix between male fantasy and giving ladies an opportunity to reach fame in tactful photos. Ironically, the magazine that start all the scandals has converted into the gentleman of adult magazines. This book takes you down the past 50 years to demonstrate how Playboy has remain true to their intentions of presenting lovely ladies in daring, yet tasteful, photos.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Love Women!
For a man like me, this book was the ultimate (belated) Christmas present because I truly love women, and I truly love the beauty of women as these master Playboy photographs portray them. How lucky we are to live in a free society where we can feast our eyes on such God-given glory. And for any man who loves women as much as me, and who enjoys giving women gigantic pleasures, they should also look into the videos "Goddess Worship" and "New Sex Now" -- all 3 of these great products are for men with great appreciation of the female essence and come most highly recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not all that I hoped for
This book gives some great photographs over the past fifty years, but I was hoping for a little more than what I got. There wasn't enough photo's of playmates. And plus I really didn't think the collection of playmates they put in there were really that great. Back in the mid to late 90's Jenny McCarthy was all over Playboy and none of her photos are included in the book, other then a non nude cover she was on. Pretty sad being she was a Playmate of the Year. I never saw any of Carmen Electra either. I really think they should of did more like what they did for the January 2004 magazine and had every centerfold picture of each playmate in the book. But not in such a small picture. There was a lot of huge playmates and celebrites that posed nude that they didn't put in the book, but yet they put in not as big stars as Darva Conger & Sandra Bernhard in it. I also noticed they edited one of the Madonna photos in this book. When she posed way back in the 80's she had armpit hair and they gave her a shave through modern technology. So for all I know there could be other photos that were edited from their orginial magazine photos. I feel this book was poorly thought out by its creators and could of been done much better to celebrate the past 50 years. Maybe I expected too much, but when the book says 50 years the photographs, I think they should of at least had more playmates than just 36 different playmates (most of them were from prior to 1980).

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant but less than I anticipated...
Although it is a well put together book, I was a bit disappointed moreso from some of my own expectations. If you are a PLAYBOY fan, buy this book! I was, however, expecting to see all the playmates which did not happen :-(

The photography is first class as they had selected the best of the best from its archive of over 10 million images. It is a brilliant review of 50 years of not only PLAYBOY but the history of that past era and it is well worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Collection of Five Decades of Beautiful Women
Finding your dad's stash of "Playboy" magazines is one of the rites of adolescence. Here you find 'em all! Actually, it's just one photograph of each woman who was a Playmate between the first issue and the year this book was published. This is a good collection of photographs of beautiful women. Looking at these pictures, you see why "Playboy" really is a magazine that's done in good taste. The women are presented as examples of beauty, and the brief history that accompanies each woman tells you what they've been up to since. Most of these women explain how "Playboy" changed their lives for the better. And you'll also discover how many famous women have appeared as Playmates, including Janice Pennington, Jenny McCarthy, and Pam Anderson. Keep in mind, though, that the "Playboy" lifestyle isn't for everyone, and this may not be the perfect gift for everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book if you're a Playmate fan
This is an excellent pictorial history of the Playmates from the early days through 1996. It's fun to read up-to-date information and find out where some of your favorite Playmates are doing today and what they look like now. Not every Playmate is updated like that, however (some them are still "missing in action"). The Playmate Book also tells us of the different paths Playmates have taken since their appearance. Some have storybook endings, others not (a reminder they are more than the photos we see of them). Overall, a fine book. If there was one nitpick, it's too bad they chose to reprint a lot of the same photos from the issues the Playmates appeared in, instead of choosing outtakes. However, the photographic quality of the book is far better than the magazine, owing to a better paper stock.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent overall photographic history of the Playmate...
A fantastic photographic book. Hugh Hefner showed his excellent taste in women by having the Playmate and now he shares the lovely ladies for every man to enjoy and reminise. From 1954 to 1996 it is a fantastic journey down memory lane to revist not only the photographs of EVERY Playmate, but see a glimpse into their personal life as well. It is also interesting to see the changes in hairstyle, fashion, and even measurements of the Playmate through the years. Yet one thing remains the same, and that is the beauty that each one of them have. Hef defintely gives male's around the world a gift when he authorized this photographic journey of the beautiful women of Playboy. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lust and Trust: Nan Goldin
Nan Goldin is one of this decade's most influential photographers. She is very much a part of the world that she photographed and therefore she has unlimited access to her subjects. There is no sense of exploitation even though these people, who are on the margins of society, are often caught off guard in private moments. Her work is raw and snapshot esthetic--a recurring theme is that the subjects never quite belong and are lost and lonely in what can often be a bleak and hostile urban environment. She shares with us quite eloquently a form of diary; one can relate so much of their own lives, fears, desires, and pain. She put it best: "I used to think that i could never lose anyone if i photographed them enough. In fact, my pictures show me how much i've lost." ... Read more

Dreams of a Young Girls is a typical work of David Hamilton's. Those who are familar with his particular brand of artistry will feel at home with his adoration of the young female form. Those a bit more on the prudish side will see the man as nothing more than an aging voyeur. Whatever your personal opinion, "Dreams of A Young Girl" is standard Hamilton fair. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
Well I enjoyed this book to some degree, but it just wasn't what I expected. The images in it are incredbly beautiful, but the text seems to be a little bit over the top, and ever silly at times. This is a nice book of illustrated erotica, but I usually find myself ignoring the words and just appreciating the artwork.

2-0 out of 5 stars Leftovers
As Royo's work goes this book does not live up to his usual standard. There seems to be just a hodgepodge of art that he and his son did with a dark twist; his other collections are much more enjoyable and unless you're into some demented stuff don't bother with this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars The art of erotica
As with each passing, Luis Royo offers more promissing and sexual images than in any of his prior works. This book is definitely not for the young as many of the images do little, if anything to hide the sexual interests being portrayed. Still, any fan of Luis Royo, erotic art or art in general would be mistaken to miss this work. The mood in which this book is portrayed could be argued, but nothing can remove from the quality of art that Luis Royo achieved in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The title says it all
"Prohibited" is the sexually most explicit of Royo's books. Again, astonishingly beautiful, sexy women are the center of attention. It's like a notebook for "III Millenium" 'coz the background is dark, suggesting danger. My biggest problem with this book is that the pictures are ranging from small to tiny, which gives me this 'notebook'-impression. Other than that it is high quality work. Royo's use of light is simply excellent - as always.

3-0 out of 5 stars good but not what I expected
I am an admiror of royo's great artistic skills and when I saw that this new piece was being released I didn't hesitate in buying it,while I wasn't disapointed at royo's displayed art I did expect a lot more than this,.it has a very small amount of illustrations and this book is just about sexual imagery,no fantasy or general ideas displayed here, besides these illustrations aren't as overwhelming as those you usualy see from royo's wide collection. also there are some of his sons works displayed throughout the book, but I didn't like them because they have nothing to do with royo's style, they're completely out of context. the texts that you find on this book are somewhat twisted. actually this little book is like a collectors item, not really something very special.only worth getting it if you like to have a complete collection of royo's books. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great for collectors of female nudes!
I bought this CD used, but thought it was a good buy. Nice collection of female nudes.

1-0 out of 5 stars Can they even sell this free stuff?
I can't believe Amazon is selling this - or can, legally (not that I'm an expert). Bottoms Up is a collection of photos that look like they could have been collected from internet porn site free pages. I assume this one, Asian Dreams and Latin Lust are the same way. Many of the files have website ID's on them. You can get this stuff sent free to your e-mail every day if you don't block it.

I gave this one star because if I gave it zero you might think I just forgot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Homage to Elmer Batters
Elmer Batters: From the Tip of the Toes to the Top of the Hose is a homage to a real American cultural icon--the cheesecake photographer as artist. As any Batters fan knows, his photographs of female nylonned feet and legs raised a personal obsession to the level of pop art. The photos speak for themselves and any person interested in leg art will find them interesting at the very least and erotically fascinating at most. Batters' camera and his eye for composition could transform an absolutely ordinary girl next door type into a mysterious love goddess. As a long-time Batters fan, I expected the photos to be wonderful and erotic. What is surprising about the book is the interview material. Elmer Batters was an ordinary man trying to pursue a vision and make a living by doing something equally contrary to the morality of the fifties and the free sexuality of the sixties. Batters simply did not "fit in" in either decade. It is absolutely fascinating to read Elmer Batters' thoughts on what constitutes a great erotic photograph. It is also interesting and poignant to read about his approach to cheesecake photography: his way of working with models, and the role his wife played as a partner and supporter in what must be one the more unlikely artistic collaborations. The story of Batters' various brushes with the censors in the fifties and sixties are also interesting and more than a little troubling. If I have any criticism of this book at all, it is that I would have loved to have heard more about Elmer Batters' life and struggle to make a living in a very odd profession: photographing nylon legs and feet! This book is a must!

4-0 out of 5 stars Stockings and Feet Fans
Elmer Batters' name is nearly synonomous with leg art and pinup photography. This book is a nice tribute to his work, and my only complaint is that is too brief. The interview with him and the history behind some of the models was interesting reading, and of course, the photos are a treat.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best!!
Mr. Batters has(sadly)passed away but he leaves some awfully big shoes to fill. If you have a foot fetish, then you owe it to yourself to get this book. It makes me smile, ear to ear, when I see the work of this artist. His work isn't commercialized and if you read the book you'll discover he didn't have it as easy as some do today. We all owe this man more than we can repay! But don't just trust the words of others...see for yourself. You won't regret it! ;)

4-0 out of 5 stars Batters is an Inspiration
For those of us who like to wear stockings and suspenders, this book shows how it should be done with style and grace.

5-0 out of 5 stars FEMALE NYLONED TOES THE STUFF DREAMS ARE MADE OF!
I grew up collecting Elmer Batters Magazines, 8mm Films and later Videos. Little did I know the World Wide Cultural Icon He would become. Finding this book renewed old passions, in a life filled with erotic Fantasies revolving around Female Nylon Clad Feet which began when I was in 5th grade. I strongly recommend this series for those who where not fortunate enough to collect all of the Masters images. His revolutionary ad campaign for Charles Jourdan shoes fascinated readers with photographs as provocative and edgy today as they were almost three decades ago. Bourdin's influence on modern photography is sweeping and far-reaching-yet he died in 1991 without ever having published a collection of his work. Now his son, Samuel Bourdin, working with creative director Fernando Delgado, has created this gorgeous overview of some of the finest images from his father's legacy. 5-0 out of 5 stars master of depraved-chic
Every fashion person who ever was blown away by the original depraved-decadence fashion photos of the notorious french and italian vogues from the red-hot seventies....will savor this collection of legendary images by a truly visionary master, Guy Bourdin. Mr. Bourdin, alongside Mr. Helmut Newton, changed what was acceptable as an image to sell luxurious designer products. They introduced imagry associated with pornography, violence, surrealism and Film Noir to the fashion magazines and started a trend that will never go out.....even though the versions recreated today no longer have the style, taste or originality of these masters.....an odd statement considering their work was considered "tasteless" by many subscribtion cancelers.
This book could have had better printing quality....and some actual magazine spreads could have been included....but overall, it's a long overdue tome.

5-0 out of 5 stars SANTINEROSS RUNS RAMPANT WITH ORIGINALITY
As an erotic photographer myself, I dont see too many of my peers whose work Id cross the street to see. Or whose work I would say even "moves me". But for Santineross Id run across the street. His haunting images that showcase femalians wrapped in gauze or naked and clothed merely with angels names written upon them, are really some of the the most original images Ive seen of late. You cant really put his art in a "slot" which is what makes people shy away from some artists and I think this is one of the things that will hurt Santineross in the long run as they will try and slot him in with Witkin. His stuff is really more erotic and more glamourously beautiful than Witkins imagery. Give this book a chance. Youll be happier for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars John is an amazing talent...
I happen to have had the chance to visit with John int he studio where most of this was shot - and I must tell you that the sense of reality you see in his art is present in John's daily life.

The book is an amazing addition to your collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enter if you dare...and be welcome.
John expertly shows his ability to turn the most mundane of objects into an absolute feast for the senses. With anything from baby dolls to birdcages, fruit to frogs, coffee tables to coffins; he paints a picture that is at times both unsettling and comforting. It brings to the forefront of our minds the dark thoughts and fears that lay within each person upon this planet. However, it also shows in tasteful elegance that such is the way we are all made and there is always a desire for what is considered "forbidden". Victoria's poetry adds to the ambiance and effect by providing a written "map" in this journey of the soul. It was my honor and pleasure to read this book and I hope for and expect many more visits to this magical place, compliments of this duo.

5-0 out of 5 stars In praise of the author
When I first saw John's work displayed on a website I was overwhelmed by the visuals. The design of his sets, to the models he used, it looked aged to me, antique and quite beautiful in a rough way I have no words for. I immediatly wanted to write something about the scene I was viewing, and that is the highest compliment I can give to another artist. Soon after I had the pleasure of getting to know him as a friend as well as an artist, and there are so many wonderful things to be said about him and his work. His work never ceases to move me in some way and I will always recommend it to others I think will appreciate his unique vision.

5-0 out of 5 stars ...
before my friend pratically made me buy this book, i had never really understood or appreciated visual art. it didn't do anything for me. but after i discovered this book, that changed. his pieces made me feel something, offering me a glimpse into what must be an infinitely complex and talented individual. they made me think about a lot of things, like what constutites beauty and sensuality and power. some of his pieces still make me catch my breath and i feel a sense of awe. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Reprise
Edward Lucie-Smith continues to write books that embrace all aspects of art and this current release is not exception. Originally released in 1997 by Rizzoli having been produced by The Ivy Press in the UK with the title ARS EROTICA: AN AROUSING HISTORY OF EROTIC ART, this book remains intact in the St. Martin's Press release. The quality of the paper and the quality of the art reproductions is of the highest nature.

Lucie-Smith has the gift to inform conversationally as he writes about the history of eroticism in art. His writing includes excerpts from poems, novels, articles, and quotations that are liberally reproduced throughout this extremely visual book. The overview of erotic art is divided into chapters: Sex in the Head, Naked as Adam, Naked as Eve, Loves of the Gods, Down to Earth, Looking On (voyeurism), Boys will be Boys, Women in Love, En plein Air, Solitary Pleasures (onanism), Coming Together (group sex), All Change (gender alterations as well as costumes), and Love Hurts (sadomasochism). He has selected a wide range of artists - painters, sculptors, printmakers, photographers - who truly span the timeline with titillations form Egyptian and Greek imagery to present day practitioners of Eroticism.

Lucie-Smith may concentrate on potentially over-the-top images, but he never loses sight of his mission to inform. His writing is lucid, often humorous and equally often deeply thoughtful when challenging the mores of our time. A fun and very informative book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good nude photo CD
I bought this used along with BigChestsSmallBreasts and Asian Dreams, thought they were all good collections of female nudes.

1-0 out of 5 stars Can they even sell this free stuff?
I can't believe Amazon is selling this - or can, legally (not that I'm an expert). Bottoms Up is a collection of photos that look like they could have been collected from internet porn site free pages. I assume Asian Dreams and Latin Lust are the same way. Many of the files have website ID's on them. You can get this stuff sent free to your e-mail every day if you don't block it.

I gave this one star because if I gave it zero you might think I just forgot.

Sound familiar? Sounds to me like the publisher doesn't even have the rights to the material but figures he'll never get caught. Is this the new version of the copyright law? ... Read more
