My bias is that most people should focus more on taking good photographs - paying attention to lighting, exposure, composition, etc. - than on technology. It takes a lot of editing to fix a bad shot. So the fact that this is written by a photographer is another big plus (though he appears to do mostly coffee table books, rather than guides). A better book for some is Steve Bavister's Digital Photography. It's much clearer on the key fundamentals of photography. It has less detail all around, but that is a plus for those who want the main ideas quickly or looking for an accessible introduction. That's the book I bought for my teenage nephew; he's smart, but given his limited experience, I thought it better to give him a book with more emphasis on photography. Note that Freeman's book discusses technical aspects of hardware and software generically, not specific to any program, which may be a negative for those users looking for a step-by-step guide to their programs or software. Also, if you don't think you'll ever do more than resize or fix red-eye, the technical discussion may not be much use to you. OR, it may open your eyes to what can be done! Another set of alternatives, for a narrower group of users looking more for specifics on the technical aspects of hardware and software, are books like Long's Complete Digital Photography. But those books don't use photos and illustrations in the text, and are written by technical writers - not photographers. They emphasize the "digital" far more than the "photography," and aren't good as an all-in-one first book. This is one of many books where the rating really depends on the fit to your needs. My 4 rating assumes that you are a match ... it may be the wrong buy for some.
The chapters a logically grouped, following the digital flow of the data. I could claim the book is good because it is so recent, actually it has just been released a few weeks ago. The digital world is progressing at a pace, where related information becomes obsolete the minute it is printed. This is not the case with this book, the information is up-to-date (looking ahead), covering all aspects of digital imaging, combined with the pros and cons of the technology. Yes, cons! Ever wondered why your digital camera has this huge depth of field? This book provides the answer. Do you hate reading software manuals? I never read them, and usually they are dull. Ever wondered how to get this dark mountain a bit lighter so it matches the bright skies? I started with digital photography only three month ago. I started with a DX3900 (now enjoyed by my wife) and got myself a G2, which guided me to the conclusion that film is dead, long live digital photography! ... where I will eventually dispose of my SLR, an EOS 30. I shot 1,400 images in two month (which equals $1,170 of costs -- for film and delopement -- based on the conventional process). Well, in case you are looking at going digital, this book will open your mind-set pro digital, educating and showing you in a lot of areas what you can actually do and achieve by going digital. I could brag on for much longer, the point is: this book is brilliant compared to other books I have seen or partially read contemplating this subject. It is also a very nice crafted book. Colourful, a very good layout, printed on very good quality paper... all-in-all: high quality in word and print... Go for it, it's money well spent! Given, the technical printing quality of the pictures and the pages with typography are very well done, but somehow there seems to be something lacking. I think this issue is somewhat better than #29 the "woman" issue, but not by much. Similar thing here, lots of pics of sexy guys, with some old guys thrown in and an obligatory section on the penis. The "pop-up" diagram of the male anatomy was pretty cool though, one of the redeaming features of this issue. The old ads for men's products were a nice touch, wish there was more of that kind of content. I would think Mario Testino would have a bigger vision of this subject I'm sure he must be very interested in, but this doesn't have the breadth and scope of the "Chic" issue. This isn't the worst issue to date, but it's not a must have either.
Mario Testino is one of my favorite photographers who has previous published many wonderful books. Mario's advertising campaigns are world-renowned. There are a lot of great images in this magazine, but I would have been so much more satisfied if Mario had published a hardcover book of his "Man" images instead, and included an extensive selection of his work. If you're a fan of Mario Testino's photography, have collected Visionaire issues before, and have a high-income budget, then you should add this to your collection. I know I'd rather stick to "Mondo Uomo" or "L'uomo Hommes Vogue" myself!

Book Description By using the PHOTOGRAPHY: FOCUS ON PROFIT package on the job, photographers will * automatically calculate a profit whenever applicable Reviews (3)
That's not all. He also includes the "PhotoByte" program. This amazing software keeps track of all assignments from birth to conception. It guides you step by step. Want to know how much profit you have made from a particular image? It does it! It keeps track of all profits in general and by individual photographs (it even displays the photo). Want to know which customers still owe money, which one's pay on time and how much profit (or loss) from a particular customer? It does that as well. Don't want customers seeing the markup on your services? Enter the item(s) and Photobyte shows it on the screen and calculates everything for you... automatically. It even add's the sales tax for you! Keeps track of equipment (with serial numbers), customers, jobs... This program is heaven sent which means Tom is an angel. If you need direction then this book will give it to you. The program is just icing on the cake. As a former photographer for the military in Hawaii; I moved to Puert Rico to start anew due to the economic slowdown caused by the 9/11 tragedy. I've worked for many people but never on my own (photography). I had the practical photo experience. But the business side was a stretch and I could only go by "general" business practices. Tom's book showed me that "general" does not apply to photography. "Focus on Profit" is exactly that. "Focused". Thanks Tom. This is the best Photography business book I have ever read. It stays on my desk at all times.

The book is supposed to be a "professional" photoguide, but much of the information provided would be so fundamental to a pro that a reference wouldn't be needed (e.g., how to use a light meter.). Some topics seem to be too involved for a discussion in a pocket reference and then are neither succinct nor good. Of course, references to film will soon be outdated, and the book didn't have data for Kodak Supra, which I use almost exclusively. Of course, like most Kodak books (which are otherwise typically excellent) the film references are very Kodak-centric. What is very good are the calculators - one gives you camera settings for unusual situations or ones in case your meter breaks. Another gives filters to correct about any type of light for any type of film. The depth-of-field calculators are useful when I'm shooting 4x5, but they chose to not include them for 35mm, stating that DOF scales are built into the lenses of most 35mm cameras. However, with the rising quality and popularity of zoom lenses, this is a bad oversight, as most zooms do not have DOF scales. The books does have some good information in it, but left with a sick feeling in my stomach. That is the feeling I get when I feel as though I have wasted my money on something. The cover says $29.95, and it's a few dollars cheaper on-line, but I still feel like I got way too little information for too much money. There is a smaller, pocketable version that I haven't looked at yet. Perhaps it retains the best info at a lower price, and in a size that fits in my camera bag.
There are sections on film types, film care and storage, exposure, filters, flash, lenses, and other important items, but the level of information presented is rather advanced. There are multiple graphs, calculators, and spinning dials to compute correct values. An 18% gray card in the back is very useful for metering, but not worth the price of the whole book, of course. The size of Kodak's guide is pretty convenient - small enough to fit into most bags without taking up too much space, but not so small that it's unreadable (though the print size is very small.) The charts are in color, and are easy to read. I can't really comment about the actual content provided - while it *looks* very good, I can't be absolutely sure how useful it will be to a true professional. My feeling is this: if you're a photographer who has a solid grasp of the complexities of the art, but want to take your skills to the next *technical* level, this may be for you. If you, like me, are a relative beginner, who wants to learn how to take better photos overall, this is definitely not it. Perhaps consider Ansel Adam's series instead - a prominent photo magazine editor recommends beginning with _The Negative_.

For photography students, this book is top notch. For photo editors or freelance photographers, this book may serve as a useful guide, especially in the area of ethics when taking and publishing pictures. This is a valuable book that will remain on my bookshelf until a new edition rolls out. Through the excellence of this book, the author has earned my loyalty for another edition. Highly recommended.
As a working photographer for almost 20 years, I've owned previous editions of Kobre's book and always make it a point to keep one within reach. I recommend it to anyone interested in photojournalism, especially high school and college students. While filled with detailed photographic theory and principles, the format of the book is very easy to follow and introduces fundamentals and advanced techniques with equal ease. Perhaps my most-read sections are the chapters on ethics and the responsibilities of the photographer to the community they serve. Society requires a photojournalist to be held accountable for their actions; to be honest and compassionate, yet unflinchingly accurate when reporting the news. Although the price tag is a bit on the high side, the information Kobre shares is priceless.

Book Description Reviews (4)
Carr covers all the technical details including a review of every Polaroid Daylab slide printer ever made -- with step-by-step, illustrated instructions. She also covers a TON of creative techniques to get the juices flowing. Lot's of full-color pictures of these different techniques makes it fun to just flip throught the book to see the art. I also like the way she uses Photoshop to supplement her manually manipulated images. Lots of just-technical-enough ideas in the Photoshop chapters. I highly recommend this book.
There is also a section on Polaroid image and emulsion transfers. This section contains information that is supplemental to the information in Kathleen Thormod Carr's other book, Polaroid Transfers, so don't consider it a substitute for Polaroid Transfers. There is some redundancy between the two books in that there are step-by-step instructions for how to use various models of Daylab to print onto Polaroid films in both books. The models which are covered are different in the two books, however. Polaroid Manipulations covers Daylab 35 Plus and Daylab 120. Polaroid Manipulations also contains a "gallery" of SX-70 and Polaroid transfers by contemporary artists. And there is a terrific list of resources in the back, so you won't have trouble finding supplies. If you are in a photographic or graphic arts rut, this book will get you out of it! Outstanding! ... And fortunately, both sections are great. THE RECONFIGURED EYE is valuable both as a reconsideration of photographic truth in a the context of new technologies, and as a book to help photographers, graphic designers, architects, and anyone working with photographs to understand how the basic functions of 2D and 3D software work and why. Though I wish there were even more photos of some of the paintings and photographs he refers to, there are many great pictures of paintings, photos, and rendered scenes to illustrate what he describes in the text. This is definitely one of the more thoughtful books on digital images and there's a lot of good stuff here to think about.

Book Description On this thrilling worldwide tour, the author shows traveling nonprofessional photographers how to bring home memorable pictures of people, festivals, wildlife, architecture-even aerial and underwater shots. Directions are detailed for composing landscapes with a variety of lenses, working in both natural and artificial light. Valuable tips tell how to pack and carry photo equipment, deal with airport and hotel security, and prepare for various locations and weather conditions. Reviews (13)
It is the definitive work on this topic by a top pro who makes travel images that are intimate, sensitive to the culture, informed and well-executed: capturing the spirit of the location instead of replicating the postcard views. Highly recommended for photographers of all levels - particularly those who want to make images as a traveler and not merely as a tourist.
Bob Krist's book has helped me to see that what I am missing is the spirit of place, which of course is different for every location and every traveler. While the book covers the basics of equipment management, shooting decisions and the like, it is less a technical guide and more of a philosophy of travel. His approach to travel informs his approach to travel photography. He seeks to be a "traveler," not a "sightseer," wanting to engage with the culture in which he finds himself. I find this concept to be especially helpful in pinpointing my own disappointment with my photos. While I follow his approach of being a traveler, I have hesitated to capture the people I meet along the way. It's that element I always feel I am missing in my work. He gives some tips and insight into how to begin to approach people to get those great people shots, how to get past the initial fear of offending, and how to handle a situation where you might be refused. Above all, the examples and photoessays speak volumes about how to approach such work. It is clear that Bob Krist is a master in his approach to capturing the essence of a place, whether it be the Jazz Quarter in New Orleans or a blinding snowstorm in Hokkaido. If you are looking for ideas and inspiration to improve the photos you bring back from your next adventure, I'd highly recommend Spirit of Place. (Gwyn is an enthusiastic photographer who, among other things, travels overseas each summer with teenagers as a People to People delegation leader. Yes, teenagers!)
