5-0 out of 5 stars Great stuff
After reading previous reviews, I was a little chagrined when my book arrived and it was so thin, but after reading it, my reservations were gone. Of course, the photography was stunning; In addition to being an excellent technical manual, the book would be great as a "coffee table" book. The information was well presented and thorough. On the issue of "bias" toward Canon equipment, Morris is up front regarding his Canon contract, but does not hesitate to point out some features that other makers make available, but Canon lacks. My only resevation with book is a dearth of information on filters; Other than that, this book is an *excellent* primer on bird (and nature, in general,) photography. Well worth the money; I'm sure I will refer to this book many times in the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Cream of the Crop
I own every bird photgraphy book that Amazon lists and this is by far the most useful - and I say that even though I am a Nikon photographer. Beyond the basics, Morris emphasizes exposure, sharpness, composition. He is a good teacher. Moreover, he walks the talk. If you put all the bird photography books on a table and just looked at the pictures, Morris's photos would stand out from the rest in every respect: sharpness, "snap", color balance, compostion, and the sense that they were captured at the critical moment.

A warning to all you digital photographers! Morris shoots film. When you see what he achieves with it, you will be tempted to take your old film body out of the closet and phone New York for a rush order of 20 cartridges of Fuji Velvia.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic !
If you only ever read one book about bird photography, then let it be this one.

I have many wildlife photography books in my library, but this is the one that I refer to time and time again.

Arthur Morris covers everything from equipment, lighting and composition to exposure.

Highly recommended. Please visit his website at [URL] for a wealth of information. Arthur Morris also now provides a 'pocket guide to exposure', details of which are on the website. It is a real gem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but with strong brand bias
What the other reviewers have said is true. This is an outstanding book on bird photography. It also contains outstanding photos. The closest thing to a weakness with the book is the strong association and support Morris has with Canon products. I'm a Canon person myself, but I sometimes wonder about equipment advice Morris gives in his book or his fine website at birdsasart, because of his contract connection with Canon.
Despite my whining on this subject, the book is excellent if you want to learn about photographing birds. It includes a review of the basic principles of any type of photography, then goes on to give very detailed information on techniques of photographing birds. In addition to camera use, there is good information on tripods, stalking techniques, and some bird photography hotspots around US and Canada.
An excellent book, even for non-Canon shooters! I gather that it is being released in a paperback edition now, which will be a better value.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really Good Stuff
Starting out into the world of photographing birds? This is a book that will really help you. I have read it a number of times cover to cover. And even while it is bulky, I have taken it on trips to read the night before I went out. Lots of tips and well written. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!
Gary Gladstone's book Corporate & Location Photography is just......WOW! His careful and generous way of sharing his intensive knowledge of photography, lighting and techniques, and his detailed descriptions of all phases of location and corporate photography is impressive.

Any photographer from amateur to pro will find this book irreplaceable. It is packed full of ingenious tips, invaluable advice and inspiring, new ideas that every photographer can benefit from.

This book goes with me EVERYWHERE. Gary, thank you for sharing!

5-0 out of 5 stars Gary Gladstone has gone above and beyond the call in writing
Amazon delivered this purchase on time and as promised. After opening CORPORATE & LOCATION PHOTOGRAPHY I could not set it down. Experience counts in this business and Gary has communicated that experience to the Nth degree. The chapter showing and telling about his "Road Kit" is worth the price of the book alone. Any photographer worth his salt recognizes the value received exceeds the cost of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book about being a PROFESSIONAL
Gary Gladstone has taken the art of being a good photographer and crafted a book on how to be a successful professional photographer. Its not enought to take good photos, and this book shows you what else you need if you are thinking about making money, and not just spending it, in pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the Stuff They Don't Teach In Schools!
This is just a wonderful book for anybody building a business as a freelance photographer. Gary tells you the inside stuff that many pros even keep from their assistants. The book loaded with real world examples of how problems get solved and how to steer your job planning to keep from getting in trouble later. If you're going to shoot outside your studio, then this book should put your mind at ease with strategies. He walks you through real problems with examples of how to avoid or get out of jams.

Gladstone teaches how to think your way through a job. The chapter on assistants is a much read if you're thinking of starting that way.

The visuals are great! Makes you want to run out and start shooting. I just love this book. Thanks Gary.

3-0 out of 5 stars WATCH OUT!!!!
I'm a begginer in this field, there is no doubt this is a good book. But, if you are a begginer too, don't buy this one, because it has just 30 pages for "TRICKS & HINTS" out of 160. There are a lot of photographs, but it is a shame there is no explanation on what lences, nor films, nor speed shutter, etc. he is using.
He only talks about "HOW TO DO BUSSINESS", it is good, and about dealing with people (your assistant, your clients), this is usefull too.
By the other hand, I don't think it is more usefull how to packing your equipement than how to take a good photograph.
So, the title of the book has got nothing to do with the content. WATCH OUT!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must-have book for creating awesome polaroid transfer art
This is definitely a must-have book for anyone who wants to create incredible Polaroid transfer art. The instructions are excellent and the artwork wonderful. You will be amazed at the cool effects you can create with the remarkable property of certain Polacolor films that enable you to transfer the image or the emulsion layer carrying the image to a variety of other surfaces, such as paper, fabric, wood, etc.

The book starts by discussing the basic supplies needed including choosing the right printer and film. It then shows you both wet and dry methods for making image transfers. There is a great hints section that explains how varying things like heat, time before peeling or adding pressure can create different unique effects. There are instructions for both color and black & white emulsion transfers with a helpful troubleshooting section.

My favorite section, creative techniques, follows. It includes awesome effects like making multiple exposures, making a mosaic of multi transfers and getting a scrambled image from heating in the microwave. Next, the author creates dramatic artwork by hand coloring with a variety of media.

In the advanced techniques section you learn about the three different transfer methods: in-camera, projection printing and slide-printer. Filtration and color theory are also discussed here. The fine art section focuses on finishing off the artwork by framing, matting and protecting it. All instructions are step-by-step and accompanied by demonstrating photos.

In the back, there is a large inspirational gallery featuring the work of 20 different artists with background information on the artist and his/her techniques, giving the book a personal touch. A complete resource directory, book and publication list and contact information for all the artists are also included. Get this boo; it is fantastic.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good 'how to' book.
I wish all 'how to' books were as good as "Polaroid Transfers".

Kathleen Thormod Carr knows her stuff. I would venture to say that anyone who reads the book cover to cover, assembles the necessary equipment (not a lot), and spends a rainy day indoors on this project will get good results before the day is through.

Just know that although her techniques are obvious and easy to follow, your own polaroid images will have a life of their own.

I suspect that 'Carr's First Law' should be that "the worst pictures will transfer easiest". Good luck with your best images.

Buy the book. Read it twice. Make some excellent transfers. Impress your friends. :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars Very well constructed
This should be in every Alternative Artists(Photographer) library. Well written, excellent examples and very comprehensive. You should be able to flourish in the medium after experiencing this book. Kathleen has consolidated a concise book that brings it all together. A value to all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great information and images
Very useful book for those of you starting out with image transfer or emulsion. Easy to read with a great artist section.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wearing Mine Out
Whenever I get ready to work on Polaroid transfers or lifts, I have this book by my side. I refer to it all the time. I took a class in these processes, but when I get ready to work, this is the book I refer too.

Great inspiration and examples are included, but MOST valuable for the step-by-step instructions. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Single vision, not single minded
As a professional photographer in the throes of a major repositioning effort, Selina's book provides valuable insight into how to carve out a single vision in 15 to 18 images, wrapped, packaged or otherwise presented in a way that supports that vision. The book doesn't pull any punches. It isn't for the on-the-fence photographer. If you want to win, you have to play to win. There is an investment in time, in money and in patience...none of which are particularly pleasant when faced with the uncertainty of a complex and ever-competitive market. My only disagreement with her - and the reason I rated the book 4 out of 5 stars - is because I feel that the biggest obstacle to getting an assignment is not knowing the right people. Salina thinks it's all about the work. I have found that my biggest assignments came from contacts in the industry. All of us who work on a national level are technically proficient, and most of us are bright, talented and driven. Yes, our styles cover the broadest spectrum imaginable, but what really seperates us is our contacts. With the onset of digital, photography as we once knew it is history. And that's the dirty little secret of this business...If it isn't perfect, we'll fix it in photoshop. My suggestion to anyone entering this field is to network like your life depended on it. Believe me, it's where the line in the sand is drawn.

5-0 out of 5 stars Required reading
Regardless of whether you are a professional, student and/or considering a career in photography, this is one of the few books that you can learn from today and in the future. With more than 25 years as a consultant to professionals, Selina has the experience and vision to show photographers how a sellable portfolio can be created: from selecting a visual point of view image selection, editing images, sequencing & all the way to portfolio case selection. The marriage of: concepts, text and photos are presented logically and in a way that makes the information easy to understand and apply. If you really want to succede in today`s market, then this is the book you need to begin your journey.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is like a glass of water in the desert
Most commercial photographers know about Selina Oppenheim, but only a lucky few make the investment to hire her for her expertise in portfolio development and refining your vision as a photographer. Even though hiring Selina as a consultant was one of the best decisions I have made as a photographer, I still wanted to read her book to make sure I hadn't missed anything she has to say about marketing myself as a photographer. I can say from personal experience that this book distills the essence of her one-on-one consulting. This book is really, really worth learning from.

5-0 out of 5 stars A clear, succinct vision based portfolio guidebook.
Selina Oppenheim is one of the premier creative consultants in the photography industry. Although no single book could possibly encompass her 25+ years of portfolio building and marketing experience, Portfolios That Sell gives you the opportunity to dive into her portfolio building process that she's used to develop so many exceptional photographers portfolios. It clearly and succinctly lays out the step-by-step process that you can follow to develop your own vision based portfolio. The photos that Selina chose to use as examples work well and will both guide you and encourage you to create new portfolio visuals.

5-0 out of 5 stars "An invaluable resource." Karen Frank, Photo Ed. O Magazine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for any Serious B&W Photographer
Ansel Adams reviews the characteristics and limitations of the B&W negative. It is very comprehensive and describes both exposure and processing techniques. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is serious about B&W photography.

4-0 out of 5 stars The complex negative
I was really interested in getting to the bottom of how Adams has developed his Zone system for exposure control. My photography instructor had alluded to it's complexities. The book explains a huge range of technical details and the thinking behind them really clearly.

For those of us shooting in 35mm some of the lessons cannot be put into practice directly because pushing or pulling is limited to whole rolls of film rather than individual frames. However the insights are really valuable.

I recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
After read this book,my B&W photograph expose have imporve dramatically, before that,I just using average meter to optain exposure.good book

5-0 out of 5 stars Lessons from the Master in Technique
Simply put: The best out there.

Make sure of a few things:
a)you are an advanced amateur
b)you love B&W
and it woundn't hurt if
c)you can do your own B&W work.

Wonderfully written, if you have the talent this book could make the difference

5-0 out of 5 stars The Negative is all Positive
This is the book I turn to for the heavy duty technical data on the most important aspects of photography, but guess what? This is probably one of the most readable and easy to digest technical books on photography you are ever likely to read or need. Adams has a way of making mysterious worlds within Photography accessable. I will admit though that this book is not for the absolute beginner, though having said that those who want to stretch a little could find much that is of use without having too much knowledge off the mark.

When I looked at the three books of this series, The Camera, The Negative and the Print, I waded into each wanting to choose only the best one from the series. I quickly realised that neither of the other two had what The Negative had and I have subsequently realised that this was by far the best choice for me. The negative deals with Visualization and image values, Light and Film, Exposure, The Zone System, Filters and Pre-Exposure, Natural Light, Artifical Light, Darkroom processes, Dark Room equiptment and procedures and value control in processing.

This book is an absolute must for intermediate photographers who have mastered the basics and want to take a step up into the world of greater control over their imaging with an eye to developing and processing their own film and prints. Everything you need to know about getting your images right before you even hit the shutter is in this book, all you need to do now is accentuate the positive by going and buying The NEGATIVE! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Sane advice from a successful pro
Shaw gives realistic advice on the difficult work needed to make a living as a nature photographer. He conveys a sense of what magazine editors and other buyers of nature photography want in terms of quality, composition and subject through both his writing and many photographs. Practical advice on the more mundane aspects of running a photography business and the submission process is given in a clear and concise manner. Of note is his advice to start out by learning to write well so that you can submit full articles with photographs that are more likely to get published than stand-alone photos.

This book is well recommended for people interested in making some money off their hobby, serious about making nature photography their career, or just curious as to how nature photographers earn a living. The only drawback to the book is that it is a few years old and some of the material, particularly on digital photography and manipulation, is a bit dated.

5-0 out of 5 stars Whole Truth from a Pro for Aspiring Pros
Ah, the glamorous and exotic life of a professional nature photographer. Wouldn't it be great to give up the daily grind and explore wild places while on assignment for a big magazine? That's the first myth of the business John Shaw dispells in this no-secrets-hidden book.

Chapter by chapter, he reveals what has worked for him in his 25 years as a full-time nature photographer. No preaching, no cheerleading -- just the straight scoop on what works and what doesn't from one of the most-recognized how-to authors on the subject.

This volume departs from Shaw's photo field techniques advice of earlier titles and dives head-first into the business end of nature photography. It's full of sound advice for beginner or pro. And the information is written in John's clear, concise, clean style. It sounds cliche, but this book must be read by anyone thinking about this business -- preferably before you give up your day job.

And if going pro isn't what you really want to! do, then learn nature photography techniques from this expert teacher in his four previous books.

2-0 out of 5 stars Know what you are buying
BEFORE YOU BUY THIS BOOK. Understand that this book is nearly 10 years old and focuses on a business model that is near extinct.

When this book was first printed in 1996 it would have been considered a basic "seminar in a book" about selling and establishing income from nature photography. While the book does have some timeless information on common sense, it for the most part is archaic in content.

There are many fans of John Shaw out there but when it comes to buying a book and expecting content that I can use, my own expectations are to get the product as advertised.

If you want a John Shaw book on nature photography, stick to his other publications. This one belongs next to DOS 4 and my Windows 3.1 manuals.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Oldie but Goodie
This book was a top-notch guide in its time that has unfortunately been overtaken by events.

Shaw tells you just about everything that one needed to know to become a successful nature photographer a decade ago, based upon his own experience. There is nothing in this book about photography techniques (although Shaw has written plenty of excellent books that do just that.) This book is crammed with practical business advice, from broad guidance like what subjects to shot for the most sales, to nitty-gritty advice like how to package your photos for mailing. He answers questions that other photography marketing books don?t begin to address: why is nature photography different from other commercial photography (nature sales are mostly from an existing stock of shots); what is the minimum-sized library needed to go into the business (at least 1000 first-class bread and butter photos of a variety of subjects); and similar questions.

Shaw's writing is direct and simple. Some of what he says I certainly know to be true from my own very brief experience in a commercial photography market and other things he says, of which I have no experience, have the true ring of advice of which I would never have thought on my own.

Shaw includes many of his own beautiful nature photographs in the book. And he at least makes some attempt to tie the pictures to what he is talking about. I?m not too concerned that the connections are sometimes tenuous. After all, how do you illustrate the advice to consider having your contract with a stock agency include the obligation to provide you with tearsheets?

So what's wrong with this book? Well, it's eight years too late. This book was published in 1996. Since that time the development of electronics has changed the photography field. Shaw's description of filing systems was written before some of today?s excellent computer-based storage and tracking systems were available. Most importantly, digital imaging was just a blip on the radar that only merited mention in a three-page appendix. When published, editors would only consider color slides for use. Today, more and more of the people who buy (or really, lease, as Shaw makes clear) photography are willing to consider digital images. And I suspect that the presentation of those images to prospective purchasers and the preparation of those images by the photographer for use have greatly changed the procedures suggested by Shaw.

It is a shame because this book is so clearly and usefully written. No other book on the business of nature photography has been so helpful in the past. Even more of a shame is that I have heard Shaw say he has no present plans to update this book.

So, if you are a nature photographer who wants to learn how to go into business, get this book. But buy yourself of subscription to the magazine Digital Photo Pro. And stay tuned for further updates.

"Its chief virtues are a succinct, mostly lucid style, a wide intellectual scope, a flood of ideas and insights at every turn, sensitivity to the technology and culture of photography, and a willingness to attend to images . . . In the end, perhaps the best measure of a text is whether or not one would choose it from among all the offerings to use in class. I have chosen to use this book." - Photo Review, Spring 2000

"An excellent introductory history book." - Afterimage: The Journal of Media Arts and Cultural Criticism

In this wonderful and entertaining book, Hirsch has produced the most useful, readable, and practical successor to Newhall.Seizing the Light is written in a friendly, accessible way -- dense with information, but more hip and lively than other offerings, especially those aimed at college students." - exposure: The research journal of the Society for Photographic Education. Vol. 32.2 (Fall, 1999)

Hirsch's prose is very digestible. He writes in a clear, lively style with a minimum of jargon." - Views: the newsletter of the Visual Material Section of the Society of American Archivists

Science, culture, and art come together in this new history of photography – the first since the early 1980’s.With superlative production values, rare and unusual prints, and a fresh perspective, Robert Hirsch has written the ideal companion to the first 200 years of photography.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good coverage of subject but poorly written
The scope and range of Hirsch's book excited me--at last a new comprehensive history of American and European photography! Unfortunately the quality of the illustrations was poor, smudgy halftones and no duotones. (Rosenblum's WORLD HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY has much better). The book even reproduces some color photographs in black and white. But it is Hirsch's writing that really disappoints: long awkward sentences that wander in circles, sentence fragments, and some obviously absurd statements. Take Hirsch's comment on a 1852 daguerreotype of the moon (p. 45): "Previously only a few people had seen the surface of the moon." No doubt he meant something else, but I suspect every sighted human being who ever lived has seen the surface of the moon.

Anyone who wishes to learn about the history of photography should read Beaumont Newhall, Naomi Rosenblum, or a host of others before turning to Robert Hirsch.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book with great pictures.
This is my personal favorite book on the history of photography. There is another one called World History of Photography that is good too. This book, Seizing the Light, is designed very well, and includes many crisp images (and all the landmark photographs in history). The book is divided into the following sections: Advancing toward photography, the daguerrotype, calotype rising, pictures on glass, prevailing events, a new medium, standardizing the practice, new ways of visualizing time and space, evolution of pictorialism, modernism, new culture of light, social documents, nabbing time, photography and the halftone, the atomic age, new frontiers, changing realities, and finally thinking about photography. I like this book because it is organized so well, and it is easy to navigate while studying it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars IT'S A STRANGE WORLD
Ever wonder what goes through David Lynch's mind at any given time? This might explain it. This is a great coffee table book full of color and b&w pictures split between his films and his art (drawings, paintings, photos, sculptures, etc.). I only wish it contained some of his World's Angriest Dog comic strips. It's a strange world.

5-0 out of 5 stars David Lynch as photographer
You know David Lynch as a movie director and possibly as a painter, but this book will open your eyes to Lynch as a photographer. Packed with mostly black and white (I like the black and whites best) and a few color images, this book includes photos by and about David Lynch projects.

It includes production stills from some of his movies, but more importantly, it includes images from his personal creative projects. My favorite collection in this book are his black and white "Industrial" photographs. I also love his "Nudes and Smoke" project. Both evoke a feeling of Film Noir, yet with an underlying beautiful darkness potential that only Lynch can attain. He also includes studies on things like dental hygiene and spark plugs. This is all very Lynchian stuff folks-and that's rockin' good news.

I would have personally preferred to see more personal projects and less of the movie stuff, but I guess the movie stuff is what sells.

If you are a Lynch fan, then you should buy this book. And if you are not one, chances are your interest will be sparked by this book and you may become one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Oddity Takes a Freeze Frame
Lynches artwork expressed here in Hyperions book entitled Images. Although I expected to see Lynch's artwork, ones that were in exhibits or from college, the majority of it is from his films. I can admit I have seen his films enough to not want to see pictures of them (if I did I would watch the movie again). But the pictures that show his work are highly unique and from a certain point of view, quite disturbing. Whether they are "good" art or not I am still undecided. Reccomended for Lynch fans only, or those that versed in the fine arts.

4-0 out of 5 stars Images could be better
Images has alot of stuff you won't see anywhere else. There are alot of photographs: nudes and smoke, fish and chicken kits, and some good stills from his movies. However there are not many stills from his lesser known films, like The Grandmother, The Alphabet, and Six Men Getting Sick. (In fact you'll find more pictures from those on the internet, like at Cinema Enema) There are a few paintings also-- however there are a few that are not included, that were perhaps made after Images was published. Like the one involving the bird and the hairless mouse. There are also alot of medeocre skribings like "monkey" written over and over again on a piece of paper, and those take up a large portion of the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars only die-hard lynch fans need apply
A collection of most of David Lynch's art, Images shows his wide range as an artist. Stills from his various movies accompany his paintings, photographs, and other mediums. Images is enjoyable as a coffee table book that can be perused now and again but isn't a necessary addition to a David Lynch collection. Using mostly personal photgraphs and unviewed art the book tends to be someone eclectic even for an average Lynch fan. Mildly interesting, and fascinatingly personal, the book does give a behind the man view of a usually very private artist. There are some gems in the rough, but only the truly interested will benefit. ... Book Description

A tribute to the most revered railroad photographer of our time.

To the true rail fan, Richard Steinheimer is an authentic hero, the best of the best. A pioneer in train photography, Steinheimer lived through and documented the railroad's heyday and its decline. He is one of very few photographers who appreciate the aesthetics of all locomotives, from steam engines to the latest diesel-powered behemoths. He has a particular fondness for the landscape of the American West, and many of his images situate trains in the larger geography and culture of the time. Known for taking pictures at night, in bad weather, and from risky perches on top of moving train platforms, Steinheimer has an enormous creativity and productivity. This, the first full-length celebration of his work, presents 160 of his duotone images, with an introduction by Jeff Brouws. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The First Artful Baby Book
Unlike Ms. Geddes's other works, this one is designed to create the history of your child's first five years. It is not a book of baby photography although it certainly contains some.

I usually don't enjoy looking at baby books because they are so poorly designed and produced. But I look at them anyway because they contain the first lock of hair, the first little footprint, photographs lying on a rug, and other precious momentos that are so rewarding. Ms. Geddes has overcome the traditional baby book weaknesses by combining her trademark "organic" photographs of babies (in animal, insect, and flower costumes) with a nice design to create a truly beautiful book to record a young person's first five years. The book does have a major drawback in that too few pages are allowed in many sections to capture all of the momentos (such as photographs) that you will want to keep.

Most of the images in the book seem to be taken from Down in the Garden, her best book, so you should fall in love with the illustrations. These images are small and secondary to the book's function so I will omit my usual list of favorites.

The sections in the book include:

My Birth; Momentos; Newspaper Clippings; Comments; Visitors and Gifts; Signs; Names; Family Tree; 3, 6, and 9 Month Highlights; Milestones; Food; 1st Christmas; 1st Vacation; First through Fifth Birthdays; Clothes; Best Friends; Pre-School; Kindergarten; Drawings; Writing; Health; Height; Weight; Teeth; Tooth Fairy; Hands and Feet Prints; Birth Month Flowers and Stones.

I think the way to evaluate this book is to imagine that you are now about to start living on your own. What would you think of the parents who bought and lovingly filled in such a delightful book for you?

Since you cannot hope to put enough photographs into this book, I suggest that you make a separate scrap book for special photographs of your child.

This book would be a great gift to expecting parents.

I suggest that you consider making a similar book for your parents (at any age) that captures your recollections and momentos of them in a way that they would enjoy.

Make life more beautiful for everyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars Stunningly beautiful and creative photographs!
I received three baby record books and this was the most beautiful! The photographs are so colorful and creative. I think my little one will be able to enjoy the book as he grows. The record part of the book is also interesting and thorough in terms of leaving space for the things you most want to remember about your child's growth.

1-0 out of 5 stars ANNE GEDDES EXPLOITS!
Has anyone ever given a thought to the young children who are grossly exploited in ALL of ANNE GEDDES work. This woman has made her money off exploiting babies who have had their basic human rights taken away from them. This is a significant breech of human rights.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely PERFECT!
When I adopted my daughter, I was thrilled to find such a gorgeous baby book to go with my gorgeous baby! My husband is her natural father and he filled me in on all the birth details and enjoyed helping to create her memory records in this edition. I shopped for months to find the perfect book to keep her records in - I especially wanted the perfect one for her because it's difficult to put together the details of the earliest records as a mother who wasn't able to experience the earliest days of my baby's life. This is the most beautiful record book ever, and now that we are expecting our second baby, I will definitely order one of the Anne Geddes editions for the new one, too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book
I have purchased this as a gift for my sis and bro-in-law who are expecting their first child. This is a beautiful memory book, and I can't wait to give it to them.
The photographs are lovely, and it has room for all of the important moments to be collected, written about, and then cherished.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for advanced users, for beginners only.
Book is old, yes, it's old. Photos are shot no later then early 80's. Besides they are 20-30 years old, almost all photos are shot with low speed Agfa slide film. It's not fair, is it? I mean how many of you (us) shoot with slide films?
Book tells about everything but too little information on each topic, one page fro each topic. Dedicating only two pages (out of 420) to exposure is not what good photography book gives you, does it? Whatever is given, is given from technical point of view, not an artistic approach.
Book can be useful for someone who's making first steps in photography. Book is for basic knowledge, ABC's or even DEF's of photography. I was looking something like PQR's - wrong pick. I have to admit there are one or two nifty tricks explained, but that's it. If you're advanced amateur (no talk about pros) forget about this book. If you're beginner pick it and after squeezing all juices of it, give it to someone else, like I gave it to my wife who resently took camera into her hands.
Good luck!

4-0 out of 5 stars A great book for learning about your camera!
I found this book to be good for an amateur photographer or one who just needs a little more insight on photography. This book teaches the basics of the camera all the way up to composition. The book also goes a little bit into the real and digital darkroom. A good post-production chapter. Great book, I recomend this book to anyone wanting to know more about their camera and how to successfully use it.

5-0 out of 5 stars John Hedgecoe again and again it is brilliant!
My friend, I'm not a professional photographer , I'm amateur, I'm in love with photography and thankfully to John Hedgecoe books my joy of it greater and reacher then ever! John Hedgecoe is unique, he is unique in this way that after decades of his super successful carrier and after dozens of published book he still enjoy photography. He never publish things like "this soft box on the right and this on the right side". He intrigue you to experiment to make you own way, he teach you to see beauty, enjoy it and shoot it. I read his books as novels. I read it again and again because they clear, friendly and helpful. He like knowledgeable friend who helps you, who guides you and who loves you.
All photographers are sweet souls, because we love beauty, we looking, we hunting for it. And he still hunting for it despite time and experience, he's still not tired. You may have the simplest and cheapest camera but be encouraging you may take outstanding pictures and his books will help you to develop sense of harmony and improve your vision. if you are looking for book that will tell you "go there and do that" go elsewhere , it is not about it. But if you in the quest and would agree that it is always good to leave something to chance, to nature and to imagination you in the right place and John Hedgecoe is a right person to help you with that.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not worth updating older editions
Hedgecoe doesn't seem to have added much new knowledge to his previous editions of the Handbook of Photography. The photos and text are new, but at the same time, are pretty much the same.

If you have the older Knopf editions, stick with them. If you don't this book is still a good resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book to learn about photography in any format
I searched long and hard for a book that struck a balance between digital and traditional film, yet focused squarely on the aspects required to understand how a camera works in order take a great picture rather than spending time in the digital darkroom.

This book has delivered on both counts, and more.

Printed on beautifully thick and glossy paper, this book walks you page by page through all aspects of photography. Each page contains beautiful, full color photographs to illustrate the concepts being discussed on the page. Furthermore, each sample photograph details the focal length, f/stop and shutter speed used for the shot so you know exactly how the results were achieved.

If you're looking to move beyond point-and-shoot to take advantage of the creative aspects of your camera and willing to invest a little time to understand how your camera works, then I strongly recommend you grab this book. It is perfect for anyone looking to move from consumer to amateur, or from amateur to prosumer. ... Read more
