Nothing new here, same old concepts, same old format.
I was looking for some inspiration here. Maybe some new ideas, some new way of teaching or explaining concepts. However, sadly, it didn't happen. I've casually looked through the book and that is probably as far as it will go. If you are considering this book; and you have other instructional painting and drawing books, save your money, because all the information in your other books is in this one.

Landscape drawing & painting
I was a bit disappointed in this book. It tries to be a fundamental book on landscape drawing & painting for pencil, charcoal, pastel, watercolor, oil & acrylic and ends up not being very thorough with any. I consider it to be too basic for the accomplished artist and not basic enough for the novice. It does cover basic color theory, some composition options and a look at 5 main compositional elements (sky, weather, shade, water and trees). Distilling the Scene--It works!!!
I have studied with Ron in the past and everything he teaches in his workshops is in this book! He definitely shows how to eliminate all the clutter when you're painting on location and get down to the "bare-bones" of it, creating more impact and life into your paintings.
The mainstay of the book is the Principles of Design which gives you a sort of checklist by which to gauge your painting's progress; he also places heavy emphasis on doing a tonal sketch first to allow you to sort out where your lights, mediums and darks go (something many students won't do). Using these principles has improved my painting abilities at least 150%.
His style of writing is easily read, and you feel as though you were talking with him, rather than reading a book.
If you can't take one of his classes, this is the next best thing! ... Read more

Loaded with inspiration and techniques
I really enjoyed the focus of this book on painting water. Water is such an essential element of so many landscapes, it was really nice to read a book devoted to it, and not just a sub-chapter.

I also really enjoyed the numerous color reproductions of paintings throughout the book which were well-chosen and beautiful to look at.

Bringing water to life !
It's always a burning desire to capture as close the minute details in a scenary picture or the scenery itself. Water often proved to be the hardest to express its formless self.

This book discussed in details the interpretation of water features using the different media like oil, pastel, water colour. All along, it had been thought that watercolour produces the best details with depth. But the book shows that other media can achieve similar effects as well.

Many examples are discussed in step-by-step approach and illuatsated in sequences to teach about the built-up, so it's a simplified step to learning. Many medium are explore adding to the variety of expression that beginners can explore.

Well formatted and recommended for beginners and intermediate painters.
