Book Description

Photographer James Loy is known for his sensual touch with light and shadow. Turn the pages of his new book, Overture, and get swept away on a fantastic journey with some of the sexiest men you can imagine. This title features 96 pages of rich Black & White imagery.

To native Californian James Loy, the sunshine and light of Southern California have played an important part in the life of the photographer. Photography, which is Latin for "writing with light," was a natural calling for him. James studied his art at local colleges and moved forward to a commercial career. His work has appeared in German Vogue, Jet, Exercise & Health, and Fit magazines. James has had the opportunity to work with many celebrities including Morgan Fairchild, Lindsey Wagner, and Kathy Ireland. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "A Symphony of Light"
I use to collect James Loy's images on postcards and greeting cards, as well as his calendar he published, but when I discovered he published a book of his male photography I couldn't wait to own it. I wasn't disappointed at all. James Loy amazes me in how his use of light & shadows brings out the sensual features of all of his models he photographs. This is a wonderful book of very classic black & white images of very good-looking male models. They are all very young, probably in there 20's and of course, are very masculine and muscular. These are the type of men you might encounter on a hot sunny day at the beach. I especially enjoyed Plates 65-67 called "Reflections 1,2 & 3," a very sensual imaginary of a handsome young male model enjoying his mirror image. Most of these photos are taken in the outdoors and are very relaxed & unposed. There are a few nudes, but most are semi-clothed. I certainly look forward to James Loy's next collection of male photography.

4-0 out of 5 stars The beginning of something special...
In the introduction for this book we are told that although this is Loy's first book, it is only the beginnning and that more books and calendars are on the way. On the strength of this superb collection, I can't wait for the next! I can't quite pinpoint what is so good about Overture. Books like these are often a case of sycnronicity between the photographer and the model, as well as getting the location right. Loy seems to achieve this so effortlessly. His choice of models is inspired and uses a whole range of guys (muscular, lean, smooth, hairy) some of which he has used in his work for Men's Workout magazine such as the two Marc's, Alexander, Arin and Ryan. There is the odd bit of full nudity but it's done in such a discreet way that it's not licentious or gratuitous. Sometimes black and white photography can seem grainy and dull but Loy also manages to avoid this in the majority of the plates. In fact in the case of George (Plates 6-9) the haziness of the photography reinforces the arid hazy desert atmosphere. Mr Loy, here's to the next collection and maybe in colour?

5-0 out of 5 stars Exquisitely Male
James Loy has captured some of the most gorgeous men on film. All in black-n-white, this collection of various types (blondes, brunettes, sinewy to buffed muscular) accentuate utter masculinity in play and seductively calm poses. Most models appear to range from their early twenties to mid-thirties. (Quite inspirational for working out and maintaining one's self in top form.) Though some of the pictures reveal beautiful buttock shots, there are rarely, if not, no frontal pictures, which is unfortunate. I believe such presentation would not have made this book cater to soft-core porn, but would have been interpreted as artistically tasteful like photographic works of Raymond Vino, Jeff Palmer, Jonathan Black, Tom Bianchi and Herb Ritts (thus, the book is still worth its 5 star merit nonetheless). My personal favorite picture is plate 45 -- that guy simply epitomizes manlihood! The paper quality is superior, pictures nicely outlaid, and each photo is immensely sexy. James Loy's work presented in "Overture" is a well-worth venture in appreciating and admiring the male physique of these beautiful men. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A sloppy, unfocused, incomplete "Bible"
"The Outdoor Photographer's Bible" is a sloppy, fundamentally flawed, and ill-conceived book. Any book that calls itself the "Bible" for a particular pursuit should be accurate, focused, and comprehensive. This book, however, fails on all three counts.

At a bare minimum, you would expect a "Bible" to be accurate. In Chapter Four, "Exposure", the author is unable to correctly define and use the term "stop", a basic concept in photography. He mis-defines a "stop" to be "a unit of measure that either doubles or halves a value", rather than using the correct definition, which is a unit that either doubles or halves the amount of light that reaches the film. As a result, he then states, "the difference between f/2.8 and f/5.6 is one stop". Increasing the lens opening from f/5.6 to f/2.8 will double its diameter, and quadruple its area. This change will actually increase the amount of light that reaches the film by four times, since it is the area of the lens opening, and not its diameter, that controls the amount of light admitted by the lens. In this instance, the shutter speed needs to be changed by two stops to maintain the proper exposure. In another example of muddled execution, the author presents a chart that shows half stops of f/3.5 and f/4 between full stops of f/2.8 and f/5.6. Shouldn't there only be one half stop between full stops? In a third example, a caption refers to the "sunny 16" rule in the chapter on exposure, where, in an unbelievable oversight, it is never addressed.

Secondly, a "Bible" should be focused. This book discusses the history of cameras and film. Why, exactly, is it important to an outdoor photographer that the first 35mm camera was designed in Germany in 1912 by Oskar Barnak? Why should an outdoor photographer know that glass negatives were made by coating a sheet of glass with an emulsion of egg whites containing suspended silver salts? Yet it is this type of information that the author is compelled to share with us. Focused is not a word that readily comes to mind to describe this book.

Finally, a "Bible" should be comprehensive. By failing to discuss the "sunny 16" rule, and how that can help an outdoor photographer confirm his meter readings and be sure that he's getting the picture he expects, this book has lost any claim to being comprehensive.

One gets the impression that this is a slapdash attempt to take a basic intro to photography book and recycle it into something that it was never intended to be. Many of the black and white photographs are of poor quality, and look to be much older than the book's copyright date of 1996. All in all, this is a poor excuse for a "Bible".

3-0 out of 5 stars Lunar eclipse
In section 12, Celestial Photography, page 134, it is stated that the earth's shadow covers part of the moon most of the time. Wouldn't this be a lunar eclipse. I think the author needs to visit a planetatarium. Also, my book only has 160 pages, not 192.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good coverage of the basics of outdoor photography
The "Bible" is a good entry-level selection for the serious amateur. After shooting for over a year, I found several helpful "a-ha's" throughout the book. There are plenty of tables and numerous photos to illustrate the authors' explanations/techniques. It's a very easy-to-understand book and was quite helpful for someone who's just beginning to understand the basics of lighting & metering, composition, film selection, filters, etc. Another nice feature is that the book applies to those who are shooting on automatic or manual systems--i.e., it did not discriminate based on your skill level or the type of equipment you own. I'm glad to have this book in my collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Value
This book covers it primary subject (outdoor photography) pretty well. The thing I liked best (and what motivated me to write this) was the numerous tables and diagrams, especially related to basics like depth of field. For the very small investment, I'd rate this book as a very good investment for any serious ammeter. ... Read more

Book Description

Light--the primitive need, the energy that the ancient Egyptians called AKH, the element that evokes mystery--has found an impassioned and meticulous expert in Italian photographer Luigi Bussolati. Born in Colorno, Parma in 1963, Bussolati explains that "every photograph is a leg of a voyage of discovery, an experience in which I try to suspend patterns, judgments, in order to follow a different map drawn by the seeing eye." Starting with darkness and using the ray of light projectors, Bussolati magically traces the outlines of his subjects, creating an atmosphere of enchantment in each of his photographs.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great introduction into cinematography and lighting
This book by Box is a great introduction to cinematography. It takes you through the setup of film lighting and the artwork and equipment involved in setting up a wide variety of shots. Whilst it would be an ideal companion for college students studying film, it is also a useful guide and introduction for anyone who has an interest in learning the skills involved in establishing and lighting a shot. The diagrams are exceptional and can assist anyone from the novice to the professional. I found this book to be an excellent guide to cinematography and it goes really well with Bordwell & Thomsom's 'Film Art: An Introduction'. For the aspiring film maker and those just wanting to learn, I definately recommend this text. ... Read more
