Book Description

As new towns and cities spread across the American frontier in the nineteenth century, itinerant artists soon followed, documenting these growing urban centers by drawing aerial perspectives, also known as bird's eye views. Commissioned by land speculators, local businesses, civic organizations, and individual citizens, these renderings fostered both civic pride and local commerce. The use of color lithography, a recent invention popularized by such prominent publishers as Currier & Ives, allowed the inexpensive reproduction of the highest-quality drawings, so that a bird's eye view was within the financial budget of even the smallest towns. These extraordinarily detailed lithographs eventually numbered in the thousands and now serve as a rich pictorial record of North America as it stood a century ago.

This sequel to our highly acclaimed title "An Atlas of Rare City Maps" collects over 100 views dating between 1835 and 1902, showing the streets, buildings, churches, bridges, waterways, and surrounding countryside of North American towns, ranging from burgeoning metropolitan centers to small logging towns and mining camps. Baltimore, Brooklyn, Denver, Indianapolis, Memphis, Montreal, New Orleans, Pittsburgh, Seattle, Syracuse, and Washington are just a few of the cities presented in this collection. The exquisite color and fine detail of these bird's eye views have been reproduced in all their original glory; also included is an introduction by John W. Reps providing a background on the artistic process and on urban development in the nineteenth century.

John W. Reps, professor emeritus of city and regional planning at Cornell University, is a renowned authority on the history of American urban planning. He has written numerous books on the topic, including The Making of Urban America, Cities of the American West, and Views and Viewmakers of Urban America.

Chagall: The Lithographs is a vast collection (1,050 individual pieces) dating from 1922 to 1985. The Russian-born artist lived most of his adulthood in France and is well known for his colorful and exuberant depictions of Jewish life. His work often addresses personal themes and intimate visions, such as his marriage and his deeply held faith. He worked in many media, but, "Lithography soon became his favored printing technique. This is certainly due primarily to the one element he had previously always missed in his graphic art: color. Color is employed in Chagall's work with greatly varying intensity, from watercolor-like washes and fragile crayon lines to opaque layers whose effect closely resembles that of his luminescent gouaches." This beautifully produced catalogue raisonné includes descriptions of Chagall's lithographic process, which utilized stone or zinc plates and acid, and interviews with the printers who worked with Chagall to produce these pieces. This is a lovely, colorful book that reproduces many of the best examples of this important artist's favorite works. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A big disappointment!
I would personally only recommend this book to the completist. It's basically a catologue of all Chagall's lithographs reproduced in miniature with "many of the best examples" (Amazon Review) reproduced in a full page format. Though the full pages are wonderful to look at there are disappointingly few.

4-0 out of 5 stars For any Chagall fan!
I never thought that I would own that book one day because of its price. But as a HUGE fan of this artist, I have finally decided to buy it... and I don't regret it! I bought many books on Chagall's painting, and this one is undoubtebly a masterpiece. It is beautifully illustrated and excellently documented. The interviews at the beginning of the book (for example, the one with Henri Deschamps) are quite interesting, and the global "presentation" of the book is simple but beautiful. The only thing that disappointed me a little is that I was kind of hoping to see more full-page lithographs. I knew that this was a catalogue raisonné before I bought it, but was hoping just the same to see more one-page illustrations, although the ones that are there (for example, the complete paintings for Daphnis and Chloé) are wonderful. The quality of printing is just superb and this book is definitely a good buy for any Chagall afficionado. In fact, I would say that this book, completed with "Chagall" by Jacob Baal-Teshuva (Taschen)-- if you could find it!-- would be the best two buys you could do. Trust me! :)

4-0 out of 5 stars almost perfect
I wish this well illustrated catalogue raisonne included the information for all prints in the editions rather than just the ones belonging to Sorlier. Many of Sorlier's prints are "HC" prints or "Epreuve de collaborateur" prints in which case you may have to seak another source to discover the edition numbers for the specific print you're researching. Other than that - nicely illustrated (though the illustrations are small, it is not designed as a book to showcase the prints as reproductions) and chronologically arranged.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT!
I have seen many, many Chagall Litographs and books on them and this one is the BEST! It lists every single Litograph ever made by Chagall, it's worth every penny.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
This was the most wonderful book I have ever seen on Chagall, and believe me, I've seen them all. Where as most books take away from his pictures with a crowded setup, this book gives his paintings all the credit they deserve. When I saw Chagall's paintings they made me all wet and excited, definitely a keeper. ... Read more

Book Description

An American artist of worldwide renown, Ellsworth Kelly has consistently returned to nature as a subject throughout his extraordinary career. Kelly began making prints in 1964; shortly thereafter he created his first suite of plant lithographs. To date he has produced 72 plant lithographs that fall into five major series: Suite of Plant Lithographs (1964–66); Leaves (1973–74); Twelve Leaves (1978); Series of Plant and Flower Lithographs (1983–85); Oak Leaves (1992); and several individual works. This comprehensive book serves as a beautiful portfolio of the plant lithographs accompanied by informative texts on all of these works as well as an insightful discussion of how they relate to the ink and pencil plant drawings that the artist has produced concurrently with the lithographs throughout his career.
Kelly has occupied the center stage of modernism since his early years in Paris in the 1950s. Distinguished for his abstract style of pure color and shape, Kelly believes that his art remains rooted in the natural world. In their simplicity of line and shape, his widely admired and accessible plant lithographs provide a critical link to the character of abstraction and are a remarkable achievement within the framework of Kelly’s lifetime of accomplishment.

Book Description

Founded in 1960, Tamarind Institute has had a major influence on art-making in the late twentieth century. Tamarind's mission, based on the vision of founding director June Wayne, and her 1959 proposal to the Ford Foundation, has been to usher American lithography from relative obscurity to the forefront of printmaking, a mission it has accomplished with great success. This book documents many of the extraordinary prints that have been made at Tamarind and the artists and printers who have worked there over the last four decades.

Clinton Adams, artist and former director of Tamarind, offers his view of lithography in this country from the perspective of his half-century of involvement with it, and David Acton examines one of Tamarind's most significant contributions, Abstract Expressionist prints. Pat Gilmour writes on the art of collaboration and Susan Tallman on where Tamarind fits into the history of printmaking and twentieth-century art. With its record of all the printers' chops and all the artists who have worked there, as well as the many local, national, and international programs Tamarind has sponsored and Marjorie Devon's essay on current events in the workshop, this book is an essential addition to the library of anyone concerned with contemporary printmaking. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars TOULOUSE WHOSE MOTHER WAS A CONTESS
Even those who are not interested in art know TOULOUSE-LAUTREC, he has become universal.Yes he is the guy who used to hang around bordellos and the MOULIN-ROUGE will always be associated to him.ARISTIDE BRUANT and YVETTE GUILBERT two popular FRENCH singers were immortalize by him.TOULOUSE-LAUTREC was never interested in doing landscapes, he was mostly a portraitist who had fun as a caricaturist of his society LA BELLE EPOQUE.The book summarize his life the way it should be and has some useful documents that makes it interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really interesting (even if you don't like his art)
I prefer the smaller size of this book (compared to "coffee table" editions). Even though it is a practical size, the reprinted art is vivid and does not suffer from the smaller pages. Also this book is really informative (not alot of meaningless art jargon and expert opinions) like so many of those coffee table books suffer from. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Magic personified in lyric story
Richard Francis Burton was essentially the first to produce an unexpurgated translation of this wonderful book of tales. Though Burton's English is often excessively stilted, Jack Zipes has quite handily adapted (and condensed from the original 10 volumes) this magical grouping of stories, as told by the enchanting Scheherazade, who tells the nightly tales to save her own life. The connections between lithography and photography are many and varied. This volume expands the reader's knowledge of the history of printmaking and underscores the enduring beauty of prints. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Look at Currier
This is apparently a condensation of and paperback release of a book published by the same author and press in 1979. The original is one of the most mind-boggling and gorgeous books ever published in the United States of America. I'm not overstating the case.

A limited edition of 1500 hand numbered volumes were published in mission leather by Abbeville Press with gold stenciling on the huge spine and a four color lithograph embossed on the high quality leather cover! Wow! At what seems like 8 or 9 pounds it's enormous. The paper quality and print reproduction are of the highest order. And the large number of lithos, especially in color, make this a must have for anyone interested in lithography. The Peters collection, from which this was drawn (with assistance from the Museum of New York), is the finest collection of Currier and Ives in the world.

The insights are excellent and provide interesting background on some of Curriers artists and competitors. Currier's work itself gives a terrific peek at 19th century America... The vast majority of the leather edition must be in archival collections by now. ... Read more

Book Description

Like no other medium in which he worked, Picasso's lithography only began to realize its full potential in the decades after 1945. This new volume presents Picasso's entire lithographic oeuvre, consisting of 855 pieces-for the first time in full color throughout the book. Assembled over the course of three decades, this collection is unmatched, impossible to be repeated or recreated in the same way. Its uniqueness lies in the rarity of its test and state printings, and its numerous single printings and unpublished sheets. Pablo Picasso: The Lithographs is the first collection of such work to list every printed sheet as an individual work and thus constitutes the most reliable reference work for the artist's lithographic oeuvre. An interview with printer Henri Deschamps offers an immediate, contemporary account of the process of creating the sheets, and Erich Franz's illuminating introduction to Picasso's lithography sharpens the viewer's eyes to the innovative diversity of this master artist whose importance has still yet to be completely accounted for. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars WOW.. This is really worth the price. A great collectible!
I really was not sure what this was all about but I ama big fan of Star Wars and also deeply involved with the arts. Not the art of Star Wars but I do a lot of illustrative work as well as graphic design and well its always nice to see a little glimpse back into the design phase. Pretty much where all the story begins. This piece offers you a quick glimpse thru nice drawings of what the movie was trying to capture. And well the tin the drawings come in is impressive... I was very satisfied. For the price at Amazon it is a good buy...

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Artwork of Star Wars Available
I got this over a year ago and found the artwork stunning.

Thinking of printing with your own printer? Chances are that even if you can find some Star Wars artwork on the Internet, the printouts won't last. For example, using color ink-jets and even on special paper... after one year, the color degrades...

Today, after a year, the illustrations still look that way and there is no fading of colors at all. This is truly a collectable.

This one is worth keeping if you love Star Wars artwork and the pricing at Amazon is simply a "steal".

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Artwork for Students of Film design or Star Wars Fans
I just got a great deal on this Portfolio today. I had never seen it before, in stores or even online. But I saw it at a store at a very low price so I picked it up. The packaging was great! It was in a beautiful chrome box. I wasn't disappointed at the contents either.

Inside are the twenty prints most of them are of Naboo and the Gungon's in particular. There was only one print of Darth Maul, which was a bit disappointing, but the art work is great. Although I had seen some of these pintings in the Art of Star Wars Episode I book, it was great to see them as larger prints. The size of the prints is "About" 24 inches wide by 12 inches tall give or take an inch, or two.

If you are a Star Wars Fan and appreciate the art, design and imagination that went into the Star Wars movies pick this up.
