5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect book for any supermodel fan!
Whether you're a fashion aficionado or just a supermodel fan, this book delivers not only eye candy (Linda posing as a manniquin), but also info about rising models Emma Blocksage (the platinum blonde Elite of the year winner) and Lonneke (Cover Girl spokesperson).

Nonetheless, the book has an ample amount of pictures of 90's supermodels that you won't need to go anywhere else to re-celebrate to reign of the supermodel.

3-0 out of 5 stars so-so
Beautiful pictures though not enough of them. Could use more of everything, but worth pouring over.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good profile of the supermodels
I don't own this book yet, but have looked at it various times. It gives a good overview of the top models of the time, although this book is dated, and you won't find today's hottest stars like Maggie and Erin.

I'd say that this book is a must in any fashionista's collection. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Try calling or mailing the agencies listed in this book
You'll find a lot of incorrect or outdated information and a number of agencies that are not particularly well thought of in the industry. If only Ms. Matheson had researched things a bit more carefully, this book might have been a useful tool.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very informative and useful information
The book was most helpful to me as a parent of a model/talent. It mentioned the IMTA convention which my daughter will be attending in July. It gave agencies and numbers that were real. However, one of the agencies(The Chez Group) is listed with some outdated info but overall is was a great book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you get only one book on this topic,...
Get this book! It is a wonderful introduction to the field of modelling and commercial acting. The information is accurate and insightful. The book turns wannabes into informed, prepared competitors! As an adult male, I find the book particularly helpful, as it is not pitched toward pre-teenage girls like many other excellent books. The step by step approaches to getting photos, contacting agents, going to go-sees and auditions, were great. I am now with a great agency, have booked both print and TV commercial work (as a SAG principal, no less...), and am pursuing acting as well. This book has prepared me well and I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A real opinion from a real person!
I stumbled onto this book as a total idiot to the world of modeling. I followed its steps as far as to contact Karl. After talking to him for only a few minutes I knew he was giving me the "Real Story" on the business. His advice as a photographer and as a model has helped me get a confident start on a promising career. This book cuts through the smoke and mirrors and gives the reader the realistic approach to the business. This small investment will save you literally thousands of dollars in starting a modeling career as well as educating you on all the scams, and illegitimate agencies that paint a newcomer a false picture. A must read for all wannabe models and parents who are interested in a Modeling career for their child.

1-0 out of 5 stars Professional Model from Europe
The writer is a complete idiot. He is nothing more than a headshot photographer (and not a particularly talented one at that), and writes at a first-grade level.

This book is worthless trash.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good information
This book has lots of information and is practical with lots of tips that can actually be used. The way it was written however, I can't determine if Karl Preston is arrogant or just that wise cracking.

1-0 out of 5 stars MORE SELF-SERVICE BY THE INDUSTRY FOR THE INDUSTRY
How many more modeling books is Eileen Ford going to 'endorse?' When will a writer give young people starting out in the industry some straight talk about where they best fit into the industry and how to make the most of their talents and reach their full potential? This book conveniently sidesteps the BIG CHANGES in the Industry over the last five-seven years. GET REAL PLEASE. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book for new models.
I have worked as a model for 7 years, in different parts of the world. So I have knowledge of the business. Why do I have this book? Well, the book was given to me as a present.

This book will be good for "new faces (a term used to describe a model who is just beginning)".

And Natasha covers everything there is to cover, -as usual.

The reason I only give it 4 stars, is that sometimes in order to understand an explanation, you will have to look up another word. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but you provided the wrong information
Mario Sorrenti is not dead. You mentioned in the article that he died from a drug overdose. This, however, is not true. Mario's brother, Davide, died. Sorrenti has published a book on the life of his brother called "The Machine."

3-0 out of 5 stars Chatty, Popular History of Modeling Since 1950
A book like this will normally be expected to contain lots of outstanding photographs with beautiful reproductions. Oddly, the photographs are the weakest part of the book. Much of the book is focused on brief, superficial interviews with famous model industry personalities conducted by David Bailey. The essays primarily repeat what popular magazines have said about the industry over the years, and are written in a similar style to that used in fashion magazines. If you are a younger person, and want to know about what modeling was like before the 90s, the text will probably be of some interest to you.

The essays begin with one about the role of the female model, and how these women emerged from being mannequins (or a blank canvases) who were often expoited into becoming well-known personalities who often developed nonmodeling careers (such as acting). The history of how agents went from controlling the industry (and getting 40 percent of the fees paid to the models) to losing control is then described. Some of the top fashion photographers are profiled next, along with their styles. Brief essays also look at designers, editors, the supermodel phenomenon, those who were harmed by becoming models (especially during heroin chic), and the fashion legends. These essays are the best part of the book

Brief interviews are reported with Isabella Blow; Karen Elson; Cindy Crawford; Jerry Hall; Michael Flutie; Eileen Ford, Lillian Bassman; Bruce Weber; Penelope Tree; Arthur Elgort, Peter Lindbergh; Patrick Demarchelier; Isabella Rossellini; Angelica Huston; Carmen Dell'Orefice; Isaac Mizrahi: Vivienne Westwood; Karl Lagerfeld; Jay Alexander; Liz Tilberis; Polly Mellen: Franca Sozzani; Anna Wintour; Christy Turlington; Naomi Campbell; Helena Christensen; Suzie Bick; James King; Jean Shrinpton; Dorian Leigh; Iman; Karen Elson; and Kate Moss. If you know much about fashion or modeling, little new will emerge here other than occasional snide comments about individuals.

All of the photographs are done by David Bailey. My favorite images in the book (as reproduced here) are:

Peter Lindbergh (p. 23)

Naomi Campbell (pp. 24-25)

Iman (p. 37)

Jerry Hall (pp. 53, 164)

Catherine Deneuve (p. 65)

Jean Shrimpton (pp. 69, 169, 185)

Anne Piaggi (p. 118)

Anna Wintour (p. 127)

Christy Turlington (p. 137)

Carmen Dell'Orefice and Dorian Leigh (p. 171).

Both the photographs and the reproductions are unremarkable. I came away thinking (once again) that David Bailey was lucky that he was able to photograph Jean Shrimpton and Catherine Deneuve so often. With other models, the results are not as good.

Having looked at this material made me realize how much fashion focus is like a brief glance, arresting . . . but then moving on to look at something else. It must be terribly difficult to go from obscurity to the center of attention to being of no more interest to most people. I admire those who can handle it well.

What can you do to make your life become a progression of rewarding accomplishments, so that maturity launches you further along in satisfactions? When you answer that question, you will have obtained a profound benefit from this panorama of fashion history.

When your heart and personality shine, you always look your best! But more importantly, you feel and act your best then, too.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pure Drivel
This book has no redeeming value whatsoever. The photographs look bad, the content is bad and many of the models are has-beens who never were. Overall a waste of paper pulp, although I initially picked it up because I liked the cover.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
I have browsed through this book and find it extremely informative and creative in a way that it shows an insight to photography and models. The video was far better because it included all views and interviews that the society have been wanting to hear. The book may be lacking in some way as it did not show some models like Kate Moss in it's covers, I find this dissapointing as the video showed Kate much more. It is a pitty how documantaries on Kate are never made but all the other models get much more focus swirled around them. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic photographs of elegant 1950's fashions
In the 1950's, fashion designers and photographers produced commercial images that are now appreciated as fine art. Comparatively few books have concentrate on this work. This book, a collection of photos from the personal album of a leading Paris model of the period, is one of the best. Most of the photos show the model (Stella) in Jacques Fath, some are in Adele Simpson and others. Various types of images are included: studio, runway, etc. Many exemplify a particularly 1950's style - the model is photographed outdoors, on the sidewalks of Paris, lounging against a parked car, in a park, etc. Always gracefully posed in extremely elegant clothes. The photos are almost exclusively from 1953-55 and in black and white. Text is minimal. The book is produced to a high standard; photo reproductions are very high quality, paper is heavy matte stock, the binding is sewn. Most photos have captions identifying the designer, photographer, and date. Highly recommended to those interested in classic black and white photography and 1950's style. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for anyone trying to enter the business.
This book was a great help in understanding the business of commercial acting and modeling. It gives you a well rounded understanding of what to do in any given situation in this industry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book! Easy reading, easy system & educational!
I truley enjoyed the book, " How to Enter the business of Commercial Modeling & Acting...Without Getting Ripped Off!"! I have learned how to act in college, but never how to make great money acting in the business! I never realized how simple it was for someone to get started in commercial modeling and acting! This book is great because it holds your hand throughout the book and makes it so simple to get started. I have already loaned it to a few freinds and a stage mom or two! It was also great to read the interviews from actors, models and the folks who hire talent. The book covered the entire spectrum of the business. I would advise that not only "new" talent read this but experienced as well. I think it is awesome that the author took the time to write this book because anyone reading it CAN NOT GET SCAMMED IN THE INDUSTRY! Like Morgan Creek Productions quoted on the back of the book, "Shark repellent for the sertious actor" it couldn't have been said better! So many people think that they have to be beautiful to model...WRONG! The Author made a great point..He said that "real" people target the"real" consumer. As a matter of fact, when I watched TV after reading the book, it was about 80% real people in the tv commercials. Even radio commercials lately have the everyday type of voice as opposed to the radio announcer type of voice. I never realized there was such a demand for people like me in the commercial industry. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Candid Expose
I found The Truth on Modeling by Erin Pinckney to be an amazing and honest resourse for young hopefuls to gain insight into getting started. It is so difficult for beginners to know where to begin and Ms Pinckney tells it like it is. The so called "glamor" of the industry overshadows the fundamentals needed to get started and this author seems to have her hand right on the pulse. I recommend the book for any parent who has a child interested in a modeling career.

4-0 out of 5 stars LOVED IT! Honest, realistic and not full of junk info...
The great thing about this book is that you don't have to sift through the makeup and photography and skincare sections(like some other modeling books)to get to the real information. This book is ALL info and no fluff. My mom bought it for me and I am glad that she did! I continue to refer to it as I try to enter the modeling industry, it's got some really good information.

I particularly like the fact that the model/author is not a "supermodel" and gives a unique and realistic perspective. A good book...read it:)

3-0 out of 5 stars DEFINTELY WORTH READING, although a smaller book.
I enjoyed this book because I felt it provided me with some insight I wouldn't have otherwise. I think that the model who wrote it definitely was trying to impart some knowledge and protection to the beginner, via her own experiences. I particularly appreciated the listing of agencies.

I felt the book (although only 65 pages in all) did have some really great tips and info packed into those 65 pages. Although not a thick book, it's a good beneficial read - and at a very fair price compared to some other modeling books:) I hope this review helps some of you.

1-0 out of 5 stars Truth on the runway -- but nowhere else
While the author may have plenty of experience on the runway, she is not particularly well versed in other aspects of modeling -- areas which offer far more rewards and latitude for the aspiring model than the runway. Her print and advertising experience is far to meager to offer advice as an 'expert' in the industry. Many of the 'facts' presented in the book are misleading to the model just starting out in this complex arena.

5-0 out of 5 stars Avoid The Pitfalls: An Effective Approach for the New Model
I think the book is great, because it works like an outline for a new model and it is created by a working model. Amoung the items it offers are a guideline to industry standards, descriptions of a variety of types of modeling so you can see best where you fit in, listings of agencies, as well as tips and no-nonsense advice. It also sets forth interesting anecdotes describing pitfalls to avoid. You are walked through the process from the first time you are asked "has anyone ever told you that you should be a model" to your first booking.
