3-0 out of 5 stars great format, poor reproductions
The format of this book is wonderful -- the pages unfold to become full 20x22" images. This is a perfect size for a poster or teaching aid -- IF the image quality weren't so poor! I wanted to like this book, really... but I've seen Klimt's work in person as well as in many other books, and the reproductions here are just so dull and grainy. Rich violets appear brown; the firey red hair in several pieces looks very subdued. "The Kiss", shown on the front cover, shows the couple with skin that is positively green. And the golds that Klimt is famous for, while I appreciate that they must be difficult to photograph, just do not come across.

I would have gladly paid more for this book if the publishers could have reproduced it better. It is obvious they intended this to be a picture book -- there are literally only two pages of writing -- so it would make sense to give the best reproductions possible! Even using a glossy paper instead of the dull matte finish would have given a better presentation.

If you are interested in truly appreciating Klimt and his work, I would recommend Taschen's posterbook for large, good quality reproductions. I also would recommend "Silver, Gold, and Precious Stones" from the Adventures in Art Series. This is geared toward a younger audience, but it beautifully laid out and presented, and actually uses a gold finish on the areas with gold leaf (nice touch!).

5-0 out of 5 stars re-creating ancient Greek myth in art
Gustav Klimt loved to draw women--men were just a prop, and rarely depicted in his work. He drew some of the most beautiful and dream-like pictures of women I have ever seen. Except for his society portraits, his women are always mythological, often nude, and sometimes very pretty. His painting style was very complex, colorful and elaborate, very decorative and intricate, full of symbolism and ancient mythical archetypes and motifs. Although a quiet man himself, Klimt's creative soul was very expressive. This book contains his best paintings, as well as a few surprises, like erotic drawings of women "playing with themselves."

David Rehak
author of "A Young Girl's Crimes"

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but....
Klimt's art, whether one is a fan or not, is seen everywhere. Rarely can one spend much time in a college dormitory before running into "The Kiss" or another poster of Klimt. This book itself is a nice collection of his various artworks over his career. However, the text leaves much to be desired. To the author's credit, he avoids taking at face value many of the risque rumors that surround Klimt's life. Instead, the author attempts to psychoanalyze him, and the "crisis of the male liberal ego." This seems quite a trick, as the author even admits that Klimt was rather reticient about talking about himself or leaving a paper trail of his life. As such, and especially by removing the rumors from the equation, the author seems to have blessed little to go on to try and delve into Klimt's mind. In this regard, I must agree with Barzun - this type of psychological history is questionable at best. If you do consider purchasing this work, do it for the artwork - don't bother yourself with the text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Open your eyes . . .
I had no knowledge of this artist before receiving this book as a Christmas gift. What a wonderful, enlightening book!

The book has large plates of about 40 works, and smaller black and white prints of some others (including a number that were destroyed in a 1945 fire). The contrast between the exquisitely expressive faces, drawn with the precision of a renaissance master, and the wild, unrestrained clothing and background is captivating.

The author provides a good biography and helpful insights into the allegorical interpretation of the various works. A real bargain here.

5-0 out of 5 stars luxuriously recreated prints from one of the masters!
klimt's work is endlessly fascinating... its eroticism, its mythological references, its composition. klimt captures the power and symbolism of color and shape in a way that is unique amongst artists in the canon. his images are not merely pictures of women (and a few men), but stories with complicated layers of meaning. all this delicate beauty could be easily lost in printing, but this book has somehow managed to preserve it, and it is amazing! the text gives biographical and historical context, which is always helpful, and even ventures into analysis -- i enjoy knowing other people's perspectives, because it helps me to read deeper into what i'm seeing. all the master works are here, as well as many treasures that are often overlooked. if you are interested in art nouveau, art history, symbolism in art, and/or art history you really should own this book. believe me, it is well worth the price -- i wasn't expecting much for (the price), and would have willingly paid much more. i wish i had it in hardback though... ... Book Description

Mark Rothko (1903-1970) is generally considered, along with Jackson Pollock, the preeminent artist of the group of painters who, during the 1940s and '50s, re-invented American art and became known as the Abstract Expressionists. Yet despite his success--people cried when they stood in front of his sublimely spiritual canvases--he suffered from intense anxiety and depression, and eventually took his own life. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Presentation !
This concise but very informational book is a must for anyone interested in the works of Rothko, and for those who want to know about the rise of abstract expressionism. There are full color illustrations provided which add greatly to the narrative!
The margin notes have a wealth of background material, without being too bogged down in minutia.
This work has been a wonderful addition to my art library as I am certain it will be to others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Survey of Dutch Painting
I could not disagree more with the reviewer below. This is a thorough treatment of Dutch painting that includes both the heavyweights and lesser known figures. It is rarely technical; instead we get Slive's visceral (but authoritative) reactions to individual artists and works. He gives us context, but never overdoes it till the life is drained from the art. As a result, he explains Dutch painting but doesn't lessen the wonder that draws us to the Dutch in the first place. His moving analysis of Frans Hals is a case in point.

Should you be uninterested in Slive's text, however, the reproductions he has selected alone justify buying the book. I have not seen a more complete collection from this period available in a single volume.

3-0 out of 5 stars Broad, but uninspired
Slive's book is a basic introduction to the art of the Northern Netherlands during the Baroque era. It covers a wide range of artists and genres, but fails to consider the wide interpretative issues of the art. When Slive does attempt interpretation, he tends to fall back onold-fashioned methods that have since been disproved by modern scholarship. The prose is boring and bland, but the book does feature many photos(although more of them could be in color). Overall, an introductory textthat covers a lot of ground but has little depth. ... Read more

Book Description

Claude Monet, leading Impressionist and one of the world's best-loved painters, has been written about from every angle but this one. Fans of Monet will be delighted by the emphasis on the paintings rather than the usual photographs of the garden at Giverny. The Giverny garden was his private haven, a convergence of domestic pleasure and artistic vision. He cultivated it as a continual source of renewal and inspiration, choosing his plantings as carefully as the colors for his palette-or the artists and gardeners he invited there. Monet's Garden in Art explores the relationship between his garden and some of his most famous paintings, the evolution of the vistas he constructed, and his favorite flowers and flower-inspired techniques. It offers a vital portrait of the artist and his enduring vision of nature's beauty. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Even his rough sketches have a quality few can match
It is a tribute to the artistic genius of Leonardo da Vinci that even his rough sketches have a dynamic quality that few people can match. The 60 sketches in this collection are sometimes rough, and yet they exhibit a detail and a precision that make them look like finished works. The level of detail in his anatomical drawings is so exquisite, that the bulges in the muscles appear to extend out of the page. Many of his sketches also represent daily events such a storm over a village, a grove of trees, plants in the wild and sometimes just the heads of people met in public.
My favorite is the sketch of drapery laying on an upraised surface. So lifelike that it is superior to many photographs, the level of detail is amazing. Arguably the most talented person who ever lived, da Vinci is clearly one of the best at drawing the world has ever seen. After looking at these drawings, no one could ever doubt that supposition.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good reference book.
This small book is great for a quick reference to a DaVinci drawing but its not good for really anything else. Its just what you should get if you need a DaVinci drawing for a quick study. There are all types of drawing examples in it. I suppose its worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Master's Work Is Incomparable
This is a good collection of da Vinci's drawings. It is one of the best among those in the Dover Art Library. A few of the pictures so vividly captured the instantaneous expressions of men in various emotional states that one is left breathless by da Vinci's incomparable power of observation and stunning drawing skills. Another bunch of drawings had complicated contents and they all showed amazingly accurate perspective geometry. One is left with no doubt that the great artist is no less a great scientist.

This book, being a collection of drawings, does little to teach, but it is a good reference and a standard of excellence for comparison with other drawings. I recommend it for any serious art student.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great for drawing practice
This booklet is good for copying practice. All of the lines are clear, but deterioration marks transferred on some sheets. Figurative drawing is best represented, but there is also some architecture, flowers, horses, landscape, and two drapery studies. The text is minimal, but it provides the date, location and materials used for each sheet.

If you want a more beautiful book, Clayton's "LdV: A Singular Vision". It has many of the same drawings (and many more) cleaned up in full color (lines lighter, but still clear). Marani's "LdV: The Complete Paintings" also has clean reproductions of many of these drawings (usually smaller) and excellent reproductions of the paintings.

4-0 out of 5 stars the ultimate picture book
This a great book if you're looking to decorate your room, but it's not much for explanations. It is very lacking in text, but then again, the prints more than speak for themselves. A great book for any art collector. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything You Wanted to Know About Tempera...
There are not many books available on tempera painting mainly because few artists these days have either the time or the patience to grind their own pigments and mix them into a binder. For anyone who does have such an interest egg tempera is a fascinating and beautiful medium to learn. Anyone who has ever tried to scrape off dried egg yolk from a plate will soon realize how incredibly durable a binder it makes for a painting medium. The Practice of Tempera Painting covers a lot of subjects in-depth. Everything from preparing the surface, pigment to egg to water ratios, discussions of various pigments to actual instructions for the traditional hatching and cross-hatching brushstroke technique is shown.

The only section readers today might want to supplement is reading up on a more up-to-date book on pigments. Many of the pigments discussed in Thompson's book, while still available, are now known to present health risks. Modern pigments that are safer and just as lightfast (in some cases even more lightfast) are now available that Thompson and painters of the 1930's didn't have. Other than that one caveat this book is a great introduction to egg tempera painting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable Book!
This excellent introduction to egg tempera is invaluable to oil paintersas well.Thompson's writing is filled with humor and wit, making the bookvery readable.

I was delighted to discover that, unlike so many booksabout painting techniques, Thompson's is clear and thorough without being acondescending "how to" manual. It also avoids being mired infootnotes and tedious tangential detail. It is obvious that he speaks fromthe perspectives of bothpainter andscholar. The only drawback is thatthe reproductions are in black and white, but as this was standard when thevolume was written it is forgivable.

This book will prove informative forartists, teachers, and museum professionals (I am all three) who are insearch of solid information on tempera painting.Look no further and enjoythe read! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Enjoyable Collection
This book is one of the best among those in the Dover Art Library. I really like this book because the selection includes many beautifully executed portraits. Sargent's style is at once both romantic and incisive. The portraits are so highly expressive that one is compelled to assume accurate likeness.

John Singer Sargent is a great master of portraiture. This very enjoyable collection does him justice.

5-0 out of 5 stars John Singer Sargent's drawings are off the hook!
Sargent was very talented in the art of drawing. He drew at least 1,500 drawings throughout his long, busy artistic career. His portrait drawings of prominent people are beautiful and very realistic. I liked his drawing of Consuelo Yznaga, Duchess of Manchester. That drawing captured the expression of a vibrant middle aged woman. His nude figures are still the most magnificent expression of manhood. I recommend this book to those who are interested in the many talents of John Singer Sargent or artists looking for inspiration.

5-0 out of 5 stars The more intimate sketches of a society painter.
The Amazon page-listing for this volume is somewhat misleading - there ARE two pages of text (Selector Trevor J. Fairbrother's brief, insightful introduction), but there are also 42 pages of (paper) plates.

Often dismissed as a mere society portrait painter, the real poignancy of John Singer Sargent's work lay in the truth that the society he recorded was on the point of vanishing with the Great War. This sense is heightened by the form of the works reproduced here - drawings composed in pencil and charcoal. Their Cheshire-Cat-grin sketchiness, the way faces seem to materialise or dematerialise bodiless or skeletal on the page, gives them an overwhelmingly ghostly feel.

The most moving pictures here are of the now-forgotten heiresses, young wives, fresh-faced soldiers, and indulgent or austere parents, refugees from the fiction of Henry James, Edith Wharton and Proust, denied the immortality conferred on Singer's more famous subjects, such as Nijinsky, Myra Hess, Faure or Kenneth Grahame. Singer may not be as remorselessly analytical as his literary peers, but he has a wit, satiric sense and emotional empathy all of his own, burrowing out the melancholy behind the glittering facades. Singer seems particularly inspired by long, swan-like necks, as if their owners' beauty already sang their death. The notorious hostess Mme. Pierre Gautreau reclines on a sofa, bored and miserable as a beached mermaid; Nellie Huxley stares at us with sad, tired eyes.

Conversely, the portraits of imperious grandes dames, such as the Myrna Loy-like Mme. Eugenia Huici Errazuriz, are surprisingly sexy; while the Duchess of Marlborough flirts with gamine charm. Portraits of friends, such as the eccentric composer Dame Ethel Smyth, are more informal and playful. Androgyny is another favourite theme, while the unsigned portrait of working class Italian youth Olimpio Fusco glows with sympathetic homoeroticism. In fact, Singer's defining temperament, judging from this collection, is one of amused curiosity, as he sketches the garish and the gloomy, the restless and the resigned, the social and the solitary.

The sketches of notables are often great fun - a shadow-darkened W.B. Yeats as self-regarding buffoon; Jascha Heifitz in an intense tondo of fiddle-like scribbles, encircling a still white face rapt in concentration; Viscountess Astor lost in folds of Napoleonic grandeur; and a young Ernest Thesiger, displaying impish hints of his most famous future film role, as Dr. Pretorious in 'Bride of Frankenstein'.

5-0 out of 5 stars You can learn from these drawings, for sure.
I vision perhaps there are three "kinds" of readers that can benefit from this book.

1) Those who want to learn to copy drawings from the great masters, for practice (to improve drawing skill) or pleasure (to display or show them to their admirers), or both.

2) Those who like to collect works by the great masters.

3) Those who are, like me, looking to see how this portraitist genius (i.e. John Singer Sargent) treats contrast, light, shadow, edges, and so on, in his drawings. They are all in there, for a good price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sargent Portrait Drawings : 42 Works

If anything at all, _this_ IS the John Singer Sargent book to buy!

John Singer Sargent has once again exemplified his skills as an artist through his GORGEOUS portrait drawings.

Unlike other artists, Sargent conveys emotion - passion - with his use of line, stroke, and tone incomparable to any other artist. (Believe me, Sargent is the Artist of Portraiture). This book inspired my art teacher to go into portraiture. This is perhaps the best collection of Sargent's line work. These 42 Works are VERY resourceful for the drawing student and very enjoyable for the viewer/reader. Sketches depict a wide variety of people (people focused in the fine arts - actors, writers, etc.).

A majority of these portrait drawings are done in charcoal; a few are done in pencil. This book includes an introduction by Trevor J. Fairbrother.

This book is also VERY affordable (gotta love the folks at Dover), so if you decide to take one apart for use as reference, you can always buy another. ^-^

5-0 out of 5 stars Short & Sweet, tons of stuff to think about
I read the entire book in one sitting and was amazed at the content. I can only imagine what it would have been like to study with Hawthorne. This book has Hawthornes narratives as well as his critiques. I wish they had included pictures of the works being critiqued, that would be so much more useful. but as it stands it's still a great book. It's something you can read over and over. I was suprised how much of his advice applies to life in general, not necessarily painting.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good
This is a book you just read bits of. It is good with great techniques. It just makes me want to take a class and have a teacher like this. I want more than to just read it, I want to be that student he leans over the shoulder to teach. So, you just have to visualize a bit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hawthorne on Painting
This is the painters bible. No matter how many times you reread this book, you will always find something poignant. I have been teaching painting for over 18 years on the college level and I have found this book to be the best. It is the only book you will ever need to understand light color and design in realistic figurative and landscape painting. Forget those expensive, glossy, overpriced edtions. Hawthorne was a master and you have his wisdom for only ($$$). I am on my fifth copy. The other four just wore out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cape Cod Impressionism
Having purchased Louis Griffel's "Painting the Impressionist Landscape," which illustrates Hawthorne's way of "seeing things", I was delighted to find this little gem which compiled Hawthorne's comments on painting. This small volume is packed full of wisdom. One can imagine sitting with Hawthorne as he describes the various paintings, their good and bad points. There are no illustrations in "Hawthorne on Painting" but Griffel's book provides ample opportunity to see what he was saying. The two together provide a wonderful look into Cape Cod Impressionism. Hawthorne models with paint instead of drawing with it on the canvas. Form is achieved through proper color value placed side by side. The book is truly inspiring for any painter.

3-0 out of 5 stars Needs examples of his art
Would gladly have paid more to see examples . While the statements are fascinating I needed to see more of what he did , not just what was on the cover. ... Read more

Book Description

A stunning volume accompanies the largest retrospective of this modernist master ever mounted, an exhibit, opening at the Musée du Luxembourg in Paris in October 2002 and running through March 2003, will be a comprehensive survey of Modigliani's career, from his earliest days as a painter in search of a style to his premature death in 1920. The exhibit presents Modigliani's paintings, sculptures, drawings, and never before seen masterpieces, selected from major international museums and private collections.

Modigliani's relatively short working life was enriched by associations with Toulouse-Lautrec, Gauguin, Van Gogh, Cezanne, and Brancusi. This book offers students of modernism the opportunity to view as a continuity the monumental work of a primary artist of Fauvism and Cubism.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book out there on Modigliani
For those who love the sensuous work of this early 20th century master, this text is the best on the market. The pictures span the entire short career (he died at age 36) of this artistic genius. There are stunning images throughout. The colour reproduction is superb, and the paper used is of the highest quality.
There are excellent, exhaustive descriptions of the artist's life, although the descriptions of many of the paintings are short. My only wish is that there were more nudes chosen for the exhibition, because no artist dead or alive painted a nude as beautiful or as provocative as Modigliani. The book is not cheap, but for those who admire this wonderful painter, the price is worth every penny and more. ... Read more

Book Description

One of the most charming and beloved of the surrealists, René Magritte took a light, witty paintbrush and created a world both familiar and not--but always recognizable in our dreams. His plays on semiotics, identity, the idea of woman, the possibilities inherent in objects, and the idea that everything was not necessarily what it seemed--or what it was supposed to be--are celebrated here in an exceptionally charming limited edition. The Blue Box is done up like a handsome book, complete with a leather-bound spine and a bas-relief frontispiece that plays the painting-of-a window-within-a-window trick. Inside is a stash of goodies, each arranged in a separate portfolio. The first contains three original etchings by Magritte, numbered and signed and stamped by the Magritte estate; next is a five-piece full-size reproduction on canvas of The Eternally Obvious, a woman split into as many parts; and last are eight reproductions each of the gouaches The Pig's Beer and Horse Preserve, printed on adhesive paper and meant to be stuck on to bottles just like the originals were. Also included is the hardback edition of Magritte, the catalogue for the Jeu de Paume exhibit (published by D.A.P. in spring 2003). Edited by Daniel Abadie.~Essays by Renilde Hammacher, Michel Butor, Patrick Roegiers, Jean Roudaut, Bernard Noël and Jean-Michel Goutier. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for beginners!
I was thrilled to find this book on henna painting. Roome explains the history behind Mehndi as well as describing what different designs mean. The book is sprinkled with both black and white and color photos showing the many varying and beautiful designs. She then describes different recipes for mixing the perfect henna paste and how to make your design come out the way you intend it to. Contacts/suppliers are listed at the end, some of which aren't found on the web. An in-depth look not only at the art of Mehndi, but the meanings and spiritual aspects as well. A definite must for your library.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for anybody, not just henna artists!
I love this book, it has become my 'henna bible'! It has all the info needed to become a professional at this lovely art, and it also covers spiritual and modern aspects. I have read it cover to cover 4 times! I just keep coming back for more! Ms. Roome is clearly an excellent artist and teacher, as shown by her eloquent writing and beautiful photographs. This book was my first and most helpful book on the lovely art of mehndi. It is the only book I recomend to others wanting to learn more! :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars Balanced and Beautiful
"Mehndi: The Timeless Art of Henna Painting" is a balance between sumptous picture book and inspirational, well-informed text. I find Roome's book to be one that I frequently pick up for inspiration, ideas or quiet reflection. "Mehndi: The Timeless Art of Henna Painting" is a worth while book to purchase whether or not you want a mehndi tattoo because of the beauty, magic and mystery contained within its pages.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
"Mehndi" is a great beginners book. It's not quite what we were looking for though. It does have some really nice designs, but I think it has more text than we were hoping for. It's informative for those looking to learn about the art and tradition. This book gives advice about mixing your own henna paste. I give it 5 stars because all in all it's a wonderful book, informative, and the pictures are clear.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Book!
This book is perfect for anyone who is just starting out in their journey with the mehndi...It gives very straight-forward instructions with some of the basic designs, leaving room for you, the artist, to play. From the basic designs to the shopping list, to the spiritual & social intricacies of a traditional henna gathering, first timers will enjoy this wonderful, informative book... ... Read more
