Book Description

Here is New York was founded in response to the events of September 11, and to the flood of images that resulted from it. The idea was simple: to present images of the event by as many different people and from as many different perspectives as possible. In the days following September 11, the organizers asked for pictures and were inundated with slides, negatives, prints, and digital files from photographers of every description, not only top photojournalists and other professionals, but rescue workers, firemen, police officers, school children, and amateurs of every kind. In order to underline that it was the images themselves that mattered, rather than their makers, the photographs were all digitally scanned, printed out in exactly the same format, and hung from wires without attribution or frames in a Soho storefront in downtown Manhattan.

The book Here is New York will be the most comprehensive and authentic document of what occurred. It will bear witness to what seemed unimaginable, memorialize the people who perished and the rescue workers who served so heroically. Most of all, the book will be a testimony of people speaking directly to each other about their fears, their emotions, and their desire for community. This desire is one of the strongest by-products of the horrible events of September 11. It is also what distinguishes Here is New York from any and all other books about the event.

Proceeds from the sale of the images and the book benefit The Children's Aid Society's WTC Relief Fund. To date, Here Is New York has donated over $600,000.00 to the Society. The democratic nature of the exhibiton has allowed it to expand to simultaneous exhibitions including shows at The Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, Chicago; and The Daytona Beach Community College’s Southeast Museum of Photography. To continue to express the magnitude of this event and expound upon the democratic message of this project, exhibitions will be mounted simultaneously throughout the world this summer and fall to memorialize September 11th. The exhibitions will open in London, Tokyo, Zurich, Arles, as well as several other American locations including Washington, D.C. The pictures communicate where words are insufficient, each tells one part of this tragic story.

The Here Is New York exhibition has been featured in all of the major New York newspapers and by many local and national television networks, including CBS, PBS, NBC, ABC, CNN, and National Geographic, Oprah Winfrey, Rosie O'Donnell, Dateline, and 60 Minutes . International press from the following countries have covered the exhibition: the United Kingdom, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Germany, The Netherlands, and Japan. The book Here is New York will receive extensive press coverage as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sobering Reminder
I understand that some people below were shocked at finding the photo of a severed leg in this collection. They all promptly seem to have demoted the book's worth to a single star. That doesn't seem an appropriate response to me. The book is almost 1000 pages long and there's a single photo showing what was unfortunately a very common site that day. I'm not suggesting that the publishers should have added more gory photos to the book. I'm saying that an honest portrayal of September 11th shouldn't shy away from accurately depicting the real horror of the event. What happened that day was horrendous, the acts, despicable, so let's not try to whitewash what happened by requesting a G-rated depiction.

This book is stunning in the literal not the sensationalistic sense of the word. I read it cover to cover the day I got it and was provoked to remember the day (as we sometimes need to) all over again. As others have pointed out, this is not a sensationalist tome at all. No captions accompany the photo, neither are the names of photographers provided with each photo. No, the focus is entirely on the subject matter.

If you don't want to remember, don't pick this book up. I'd argue, however, that for the sake of our children and our society, we all need to remember this event and remember it well.

5-0 out of 5 stars No textbook will ever be as valuable in recounting 9/11.
I first heard about this book on CNN, a few months after 9/11. I would stop at the book in the bookstore, and flip through. I could never get through more than 10 pages because it was too emotional. I finally bought the book, over two years later, and after a personal tragedy of my own, made myself get through it. The book is composed of so many photographs that are only a split-second in time, I found myself wondering what happened of so many of the subjects -- the man who picked up and read a random piece of paper out of thousands that had been blown out of the building, the woman on page 281 who reminded me all too much of the little girl running away from her napalm-bombed village in Vietnam in the famous photograph. I was not in New York on September 11. I was bartending, in a bar in Atlanta, where every television was on the news, and the packed restaurant sat silent. Though I still can't imagine what it was like after viewing this book, I have realized that September 11 was so many different experiences to so many people. Snapshots of many of those, even one similar to mine, are portrayed, and reinforces the magnitude and impact the events had on so many.
To get on my soapbox for a while, the "severed leg" picture -- not only was this picture justified in being included, as well as the pictures of persons jumping from the buildings, it was absolutely necessary in conveying the events to future generations. When we think of the holocaust, 6 million people is a difficult concept to grasp. But when we see pictures of mass graves, people in the ghettos, etc., we realize the value of each individual person, and how each of them didn't deserve their fate. Similar is my sentiment toward the more gruesome photographs. Their inclusion was absolutely necessary to convey the death of each individual person -- the pain they left behind, the family that will miss them, and how each person didn't simply disappear into a 8x11 flyer with their smiling picture in it.
One of the most powerful things in the book is the quote from which the title "Here is New York" was taken -- a segment written 50 years ago by E.B. White, ironically the author of "Charlotte's Web," the story so many of us read as children. It expresses his fear of how New York, in all of its glory and modernization, was incredibly vulnerable. The passage is incredibly prophetic.
When I have children, and they ask about these events, as I did when I became curious as to where my parents were when JFK was assassinated, I will show them this book.
If you can handle the impact of this book, I highly reccommend it. It will make you appreciate your loved ones more, it will make you remember what so many went through.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Next Best Thing to Visiting the Storefront
Exhausted after wandering through lower Manhattan looking for friends lost, I came upon the Here Is New York storefront. No sign announced this storefront -- only a line of dazed people drifting inside, many clutching photos to be pinned to the clotheslines strung overhead. Nothing relates the stunning horror of that time, except these candid and brutal snapshots taken by regular people on that most irregular day. These photos convey the horrors for which there are no words. I can't look at this book without smelling the smoke all over again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly amazing
I just got this book and it is the most comprehensive book out there on September 11th of what happened that day. I went through it all in one day and after I was finished the thoughts and emotions that went through me on that day all came back.

There are some pretty disturbing photographs in there so I would not recommend it for children or even for family members who lost someone in the trade center. I am sure you have read already about the leg photo but there is another one that i was as disturbed by. It was the one of the north tower by the impact hole where the plane went in. There are actually people standing in the hole looking down not sure what to do. I had never seen that picture before and I started crying thinking what could be going through those people's desperate minds.

As the two year anniversary of this horrid day is quickly approaching, this book will be a testament to what we went through that day here in New York and should be in your library to always remember what we went through as a nation and overcame as a nation.

5-0 out of 5 stars 9/11 as it happened
What happened on 9/11 was horrific, stunning and chilling. This book shows you what the scene was on that day and the days afterwards. Many comments have been made about the 1 photo of the unbelievable horror that occured that day. Yes, there was no sticker to tell you it was coming, but do you really think a book about 9/11 wouldn't include some photos that make us all disgusted? I have found too many publications that whitewash the event so as not to offend, but we lose our desire not to let it happen again as it becomes a distant memory. Many in this country have already forgotten that day and what it felt like and how sickening it was and if this book, however small, makes us remember how we felt that day and how proud we were to be Americans, then it is worth it over 1 photo. ... Book Description

Renowned for her candid portrayal of family life (Immediate Family), her revealing study of girlhood (At Twelve), and landscapes from the American South (Mother Land and Deep South), internationally acclaimed photographer Sally Mann has produced a powerful new body of work on the one subject that affects us all. In WHAT REMAINS, a five-part meditation on mortality, Mann focuses her lens on the ineffable divide between body and soul, the means by which life takes leave of this earth, and the manner in which it rejoins it. Mann's new photographs are by turns shocking and sublime. An armed fugitive is hunted down by police. She photographs the scars left on her property after the incident. A series of brooding, otherworldly landscapes made at the Civil War battlefield of Antietam is followed by a group of close-up portraits of Mann's own children, floating in the inky black atmosphere of the nineteenth-century ambrotype; another series taken at a forensics study site offers an unflinching look at the process of decomposition, as do images of a beloved pet greyhound--long since departed. Made with the collodion process, using glass plates, the resulting images are at once painterly, sculptural, and photographic. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars it was the kids
i always wondered if mann was a truly gifted artist or if her subjects and locations were just so compelling that anyone could have captured incredible images if they happened to be present.

this book confirms the latter.

these photographs are flat, uninteresting, not compelling for me in any way.

Maybe she needs to find some new prepubescent girls and go back to the child-erotica.

The controversial nature of her images were what vaulted her to fame.

it surely was not talent.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing ...
I was very disappointed in this book. If I want to see death photos, I can find them almost anywhere these days. I miss Sally's earlier work, which was focused more on people and children. Her landscapes and these death photos are made to look as if they were photographed 100 years ago and I find this too "gimmicky" for my taste. I think that her new subject matter, death, is on the level on the current supermarket tabloid mentality. A very disappointing book that I was looking forward to ... really wish she would return to her earlier topics, and printing techniques.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you to Sally Mann.........
Thank you to Sally Mann for her frank discussion & photographs on death. I have long felt that American's are spending millions of dollars in the vain, dillusional and fear-driven attempt to ELIMINATE aging and death. It is frustrating & depressing to see so much money wasted this way. It also seems to have created an obsession with safety at any cost. I appreciate Sally Mann's beautifully done work on this "taboo" subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shocking
The first time I viewed this book, standing over it for nearly an hour, I was left socked, so shaken that I had to go to my room and turn off all the lights, and just lie in my bed and rest myself.

What Mann has created is not definable, and doubtless each viewing experience will be different for each individual. She does not seem to be creating an agenda book as much as an human experience. As I moved through I kept on thinking about, or rather questioning myself. What is it to look at a dead body? Is it a sign of disrespect for the dead? Or is it a sign of reverence? After all, it is the easy thing to turn away from the rotting flesh of our family, but that does not mean that it is the respectful thing, right?

One would think that Mann, already an artist at the top of her profession, might be tempted to rest on her laurels. However, this new work proves that she has no intention of doing so. She bravely continues to take risks, as well as dive further into her subject matter, and what remains is one of the world's greatest artists functioning at the peak of her creative powers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
Death has long been a subject for artists. Mann's depth and vision elevate even the photos of decomposing bodies several levels above the merely grotesque. Yes, the photos are "difficult". The techniques employed produce dark or washed out and unevenly exposed images. But this adds to the overall mood of the book. And the subject matter is not "pretty". The final section of tightly cropped family photographs sums up "what remains". This is an outstanding project from one of the finest practitioners today of the photographer's art. ... Read more

Book Description

Back In The Days documents the emerging hip-hop scene from 1980-1989 - before it became what is today's multi-million-dollar multinational industry. Back in the days, gangs would battle not with guns, but by breakdancing.Back in the days, the streets - not corporate planning - set the standards for style.Back in the days, Jamel Shabazz was on the scene, photographing everyday people hangin' in Harlem, kickin' it in Queens, and cold chillin' in Brooklyn.Street styling with an attitude not seen in fashion for another twenty years to come, Shabazz's subjects strike poses that put supermodels to shame - showing off Kangol caps and Gazelle glasses, shell-top Adidas and suede Pumas with fat laces, shearling coats and leather jackets, gold rope chains, door-knocker earrings, name belts, boom boxes, and other designer finery. For anyone who wants to know what "keepin' it real" means, Back In the Days is the book of your dreams. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars ...when brothers had waves, Cazal shades and corn braids...
Just when you thought you escaped Bell-Kangols, Sheepskins and the Koch administration, along comes "Back In The Days". Photograhper Jamel Shabazz's vibrant tome is fresher than two-tone British Walkers with the LEE suit to match! More like your man's childhood photo album, B.T.D. is a melting pot of style, attitude and a throw-back to the glory days of 80's Hip Hop fashion. Looking at these pages brought back fond memories of Kurtis Blow and B-boys, Jordache n' Jettas, subway graffiti and shopping on Delancey. Jamel does a great job of capturing the youth of New York in one of the most stylish and important decades in Hip Hop history. It would've been dope though to include actual info (i.e., date, location and names of subjects and/or crews) on each page, but the omissions only help to arouse curiosity. Funny enough, the irony in the era(s) being covered in this book is: no matter what the socioeconomic conditions of the times were, (i.e., drugs, poverty, crime, Reganomics etc.) kids in NY always found a way to look good! Back In The Days is a great book and an excellent reference to a period in Hip Hop history when the word "fresh" wasn't just a catchphrase, but a way of life. --James "Koe" Rodriguez

4-0 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE if you are an 80's child!
I got this book as soon as it came out, and it is better than I had expected. I always wished I had more photos of the outfits and growing up in the 80's and this book does justice to how we looked. Everything is nicely represented in this book although I wish more West Coast. But still, It's Fantastic and It's Nicely bound very artsy cool!

5-0 out of 5 stars Only in NYC
Growing up in Brownsville, Brooklyn this book depicts the look and feel of NYC during this era. Brothers was rocking the shearlings tough, punks was getting their Lee patches taken and the flygirls was rocking the bamboo earings. Before the MTV era (although we did have Video Music Box) was setting the trend for how we looked and spoke, we looked within ourselves and let the streets define whether we were fresh or corney. Jamal represented in this book for real before the word was exploited. One

5-0 out of 5 stars It's FRESH!!!
If you used to sit in front of the TV, after school, watching "YO MTV Raps" and "Rap City", then this book is for you. Just like how Moms and Dads can reminisce about the 60's & 70's, we can finally look back and remember the days when the only debt we had was a pager bill. Bamboo earings, asymmetric hair cuts, converse shoes and "TIGHT" jeans were in style. I usually don't spend over [price] on one book (I'm not that much of a reader) but I HAD to get this one. Definitely, a must have for those rainy days, or when you just want to sit back and "chill".

2-0 out of 5 stars cool cover - weak inside
The cover looked so promising, but once i opened this boook up and took a good look inside I was very dissappointed.
It really looked like it was going to be the coolest B-boy hip hop style from back in the days book ever, but fell short in a big way in my opinion. That's too bad. ... Read more

The Excelsior District traditionally has not been among San Francisco's "spotlight" neighborhoods, yet this area is an important residential and commercial zone that is home to some 30,000 residents. These rolling hills south of San Francisco's better-known districts are now covered with row upon row of houses, streets, and apartments. But places like the Excelsior were once sparsely populated, agrarian, and even rural. This volume of vintage photographs chronicles the Excelsior's intriguing journey from rugged swamp and farmland to the busy cosmopolitan neighborhood we know today. It is a tale of determined immigrant families putting down roots in a challenging locale and overcoming adversity to stake out a permanent enclave in this famed city. It is also a story of large-scale construction and reclamation to tame the rugged outskirts of San Francisco. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent choice for anyone of any age
This superb coffee table book by Kevin W. Kelley is especially apt in this day and age, when so much in life feels precarious and precious.A simple and simply eloquent collection of photographs and quotations, it is so much more than the sum of its parts.

The astronauts who have either landed on the moon or have orbited the earth have so much to tell us and it's easy to see from the photographs why they feel words fail them.Luckily for us, words DON'T fail them. This select, small group of men and woman try mightily to tell us what their experiences were, and overwhelmingly they succeed in conveying the mystery and beauty they saw from their unique perches in space.A few of the better bits include:

"[From space] you have an almost dispassionate platform--remote, Olympian--and yet [seeing the earth from up there is] so moving that you can hardly believe how emotionally attached you are to those rough patterns shifting steadily below."
- THOMAS STAFFORD, USA

"O. Henry, the American writer, wrote in one of his stories that if you want to encourage the craft of murder, all you have to do is lock up two men for two months in an eighteen-by-twenty-four-foot room.Entering 'Salyut,' which was to be both our home and our office for six months, we told each other: We are brothers.I am you and you are me."
- VALERIE RYUMIN, USSR

"Before I flew, I was already aware of how small and vulnerable our planet is; but only when I saw it from space, in all its ineffable beauty and fragility, did I realize that humankind's most urgent task is to cherish and preserve it for future generations."
- SIGMUND JAHN, GERMANY

In no book that I can think of does the phrase "A picture is worth a thousand words" better fit.The photographs herein are astonishing in showing the exquisite planet we occupy.A view of England's North Sea coast looks like a slab of lapiz lazuli, its surface flecked with sparkle and hue.Canada's Lake Winnipeg from space has the appearance of something primal, almost fetal. The Indian Ocean off Madagascar looks like a sheet of slate over which some divine presence has tossed a handful of diamonds. So few of us can ever hope to share the experience of these men and women that this book is all the more precious, and beautiful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Only Being in Orbit Could Give You a Better View!!!!
This coffee table book presents some of the best photographs taken of the Earth and the Moon by both astronauts and cosmonauts.Due to the large size of the book, these photographs are even more stunning. In addition to the photographs, several quotes by those who have flown in space accompany each photograph.

One of things that I really liked about the book is that other than the small quotes, there is very little accompany text. The only real text is at the end of the book, where NASA's chief photographic planner describes "Why Space Photography?"I found thispart kind of chilling where he states, "it is a far more air-polluted Earth today than it was in the past ... twenty years ago"

5-0 out of 5 stars A new perspective
A wonderfully moving and beautifully compiled collection of images.Mountain ranges and river deltas dissolve into abstract designs of astounding beauty. The accompanying commentaries show a world united inspace in a way that is sadly absent on Earth. The book would make anybodywant to become an astronaut.

This is the perfect present for anyoccasion. It has touched the hearts of everyone I know who has ever seenit.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars best book on earth
Political boundaries are dissolved by a moon's-eye view of Earth to create bold visions of the planet through 150 color photographs culled from the American and then-Sovietarchives. The pictures are allowed to speak forthemselves, with only tiny captions describinglocales and weather conditions. Commentary isprovided solely by eloquent quotes fromastronauts of 18 nations which are shown both in originallanguage (be it Arabic, Chinese, Vietnamese, Hindi, Mongolian,French, German, Spanish, Hungarian, Romanian, Polish,Czech, Bulgarian, Dutch, or Russian) and Englishtranslation. The message is simple--we are allcitizens of the same global nation.

Conceived and edited for the Association of Space Explorers,no earthling will be unmoved by the views, bothphotographic and verbal, regarding our home. Fromdesert to arctic, ocean to breadbasket, this bookwill delight anyone who's ever looked outside anairplane window to marvel at the forms below.

5-0 out of 5 stars A god's-eye view of Earth...
A wonderfully inspiring book -- beautiful photos of our beloved Earth from a god's-eye view, plus candid quotations from several astronauts, cosmonauts and other spacefarers from around the world.Truly makes yousee this place in another light.I wish I could get some of these picturesenlarged and framed! ... Book Description

Once upon a time, before the Soviet invasion and two decades of civil war, Afghanistan stood as a beautiful, if austere, country. Enchanted by the dramatic landscape, two photographers from the West devoted 14 years, from 1964 to 1978, to documenting its rugged charms. From ruined cities covered with desert sands to the Pamir mountains, where caravans of camels walk across frozen rivers in winter, to the Turkestan bazaars along the old Silk Road, Roland and Sabrina Michaud traveled and came to love this ravaged paradise and its proud peoples: Pashtuns, Tadjiks, Hazara farmers, Uzbek horsemen, Kirgiz shepherds, Nuristani mountain dwellers, and Derbiche vagrants.

With the Michauds' evocative photography and text by prizewinning poet and essayist André Velter, this striking testimony to the Afghanistan that once was will help readers understand and respect a country now so central to current events. ... Read more

Book Description

Following the international success of The Sea-Abrams' deluxe, oversize volume of photographs by Philip Plisson-The Sea/Day by Day offers a new compilation of the acclaimed marine photographer's work in an affordable, compact format. These spectacular images-including almost 200 new photographs-are the result of Plisson's 25-year obsession with the planet's waters, capturing the sea in all its power, drama, and changeability.

We see crashing waves, placid waters, jagged rocks rising from foamy mists, and the overwhelming force of the currents, as well as sailboat regattas and races on the high seas. From solitary lighthouses to seaside communities, Plisson's photographs also explore our desire to live close to the ocean and the need to adapt to its rhythms. A book for photography lovers and open-sea adventurers alike, this breathtaking volume celebrates-in 365 of Plisson's most evocative images-our never-ending fascination with the sea. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Magnificent Photographs Of Stunning Seascapes!
"The Sea" is a magnificent book of photographs. Anyone who loves the the world's great bodies of water will be awed by Philip Plisson's stunning seascapes. He has captured the oceans in all moods, in all their glory - gentle, tempestuous, mysterious, terrifying, powerful. There is the beautiful tranquility of the Caribbean, and the stormy violence of the North Atlantic. And Plisson also captures the elusive quality of light, and the way it falls on water. His successful efforts to capture the right light, at the best moment, to enhance the particular quality of the sea he wants to exhibit, is worth the price of the book alone.

Many of his remarkable images feature lighthouses, ancient tall ships, and modern sail boats, regattas, and sailors alone with the elements. The vast sea, however, is the dominant presence in all the photographs.

There is very little text here. The monumental photographs speak for themselves. Yann Queffelec's Introduction does provide a perfect setting, and Elaine Georges' text is well written.

I bought this huge, (11.5" X 14.5"), coffee-table book for a sailing mate's birthday, and he absolutely loves it. There are a total of 400 photographs, and four fold-out panoramas. I have looked through my gift so many times that I decided to purchase one of my own. I highly recommend this beautiful book! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent help for exploring your new digital "toy"
As a person experienced with technology but not knowledgeable about photography, I found this book to be a great resource. I bought my first digital camera, but didn't know how to get its features to "work for me" to take the pictures I wanted. So once I got the book I skipped straight to the chapters on basic photography -- including exposure, composition, and lighting -- which were invaluable. The author has a casual style (humorous on occasion, but the book is not burdened with quips), and he explains concepts in a way that's accomodating to novices, yet with enough detail to satisfy the technically oriented. After reading the chapters through once, I felt as if I had completed a basic photography class.

However, while I think the photography info itself merits 5 stars, the book as a whole fell a bit short. First, there are a few blatant errors, such as incorrectly referenced figures and wrong pictures, that were irksome (although they didn't much hinder the learning experience). Second, the large portion on image editing doesn't provide much new info for those already familiar with popular photo editing software -- it's strictly for newbies. Third, the black and white photos were poorly suited to illustrate certain concepts, especially those involving color. A color insert containing all the photos as they were originally shot would have helped.

In summary, this is definitely a worthwhile book for the overall digital photography novice. Those who are also new to computer hardware and software will likely reap the greatest return for their investment. Computer "geeks" may need to supplement this book with something more advanced on software.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good investment in both time and money
I found this book ideal as it is written for the amateur photographer that is new to digital photography, which basically describe my status. There is a lot of useful information in its 376 pages. It is well indexed and organized so that topics are easy to find.

The book is an easy read and is well illustrated, but suffers from a lack of colour. Obviously by eliminating colour and binding with a soft cover the publisher has been able to meet a price point. It's too bad the author does not published colour plates on his website to compensate for this lack of colour.

While I own a Kodak DC4800 3.1 Digital Camera and therefore would like to see more information on my specific camera, the author balances that desire by covering digital photography without being too camera brand specific.

I have read Dennis Curtin's A Short Course in Nikon Coolpix 950 Photography and would rate Dave Johnson's book as a more instructive book. I think Johnson's book will remain a good reference work for some years.

3-0 out of 5 stars Could be a lot better
This book is basically has two parts. The first talks about your camera, and the second shows you how to modify your digital pictures on your computer. In my opinion, too many chapters are dedicated to the second part, and not enough to the first.

As the owner of a new and expensive digital camera, I knew I needed help in using it. The manual showed me what the camera could do, but not what I should do. This book doesn't help me enough. I need to find another book.

The discussion on photography is too sparse. I think part of the problem is that the book is old. Lots of features on my camera are not even discussed, presumably because they were not common when the book came out. In addition, some topics are only glossed over.

The chapters on using your computer to modify the images was of no use to me, even though it's more than half the book. If I had known that, I wouldn't have purchased it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you wanted to know about digital photography . .
I bought this book for my husband for Christmas. He just recently became entralled with his digital camera, but didn't know much about it. He learned a lot: from what the different settings do to learning what is the best paper to print on. He read it practically from cover to cover.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just What I Needed
This book delivered exactly what I was looking for. I have had a digital camera for three years, and realized that my lack of knowledge in the basic principals of photography was holding me back. Not only did this book explain clearly and effectively the basics of photography, but it taught me to get the most out of my digital camera's capabilities. I was getting frustrated and now I am enjoying my camera again.

I also wanted to learn what to look for in a higher-end camera down the line, and this was covered as well. I understand how to weigh the different features against the kind of pictures I want to take.

Well written and useful. I recommend it. ... Read more

Providing a new perspective on many of the old stories in the history of photography, Mary Warner Marien's book is a provocative and informative read. She shows how the medium developed in various historical, economic, political, and cultural settings worldwide, and discusses the many uses to which photography has been put-from art to vernacular, documentary to photojournalism, and science to advertising.

Incorporating new research not covered in any other survey, Marien thoughtfully explores ideas generated by and about photography in each period, and examines photography's key role in contemporary art and today's increasing use of digital photography. With a panoply of arresting images by famous photographers such as Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Steichen, August Sander, and Margaret Bourke-White-as well as many unusual and seldom-seen pictures-the book is as enticing to look at as its original ideas are stimulating to consider. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The NARS Technique Has Changed My Whole Outlook!!
I can't imagine what I was doing before getting my hands on this book...the Nars technique has cut about 20 minutes off my makeup time in the morning; not because he takes a simplified approach, but because he discounts all those old adages, like "Wear this color if your eyes are blue", or "Don't arch your eyebrows if your face is round", etc. Nars seems to have 3 main ideas for choosing and applying makeup:wear what YOU want to wear, use your intuition about what looks right for you,and don't take the process too seriously. And to my particular delight, his advice for eyebrows is to stick to your natural shape and don't make them up too much (I describe myself as being in "eyebrow rehab" now that I've studied the less-is-more approach that Nars takes with eyebrows). The book is beautifully put together, although I'm not a big fan of the spiral binding. There's a transparent cover sheet over each photograph, showing the Nars Cosmetics colors & products that were used on the models, the area of the face on which it was applied, & the shape of the shading (so the reader can achieve the exact same effect). Some of the looks are outrageous or exotic, but most of them are absolutely lovely and highly realistic for the average woman. I keep the book propped up & open to my favorite page in the bathroom, so I can glance at it while I do my own makeup. I can't recommend this book enough!! I finally feel satified that I've found the best makeup style for myself, thanks to Nars. Go for it!

5-0 out of 5 stars For Makeup Addicts Like Moi
This is the best makeup how-to book on the planet.

Easy, clear instructions (an overleaf, for practically mistake-proof replications!), lots of variety (perhaps not enough women of color, however), and beautiful photography. Marvelous. I have worn my makeup differently each day for six weeks now, thanks to this book...and I'm suddenly getting compliments on the way I look.

My only real complaint is that the actual construction of the volume is not as sturdy as one would wish...drop it once and it's a goner. However, it's worth it for the contents.

Thank you, Mr. Nars. Now, for Makeup Your Mind II, could you show a few models who are not quite so gorgeous sans maquillage?

3-0 out of 5 stars Some good tips but not far enough in photo examples
It was a good read on the essays and tips on different parts of the face - skin, eyes, and lips etc... However, I didn't seem to walk away with anything new as far as how to correct problem area or acne blemishes and contouring. Robert Jone's book Beauty Made Simple seems like a better choice for that matter. However, Mr. Nars has some good insight on makeup and that alone may worth the price of the book. As a photographer and want-to-be makeup artist, I want to learn all.

5-0 out of 5 stars love at first sight!!
i got my "makeup your mind today". it was absolutely stunning! i love it. (although the models look kinda scary...) still everybody should get it!!

4-0 out of 5 stars great before and after
If you are looking for a book that shows you how to do makeup to go to work at your office, this probably isn't the book for you.
If you are a beginning makeup professional like myself I find this book helpful. It has two full face size pictures, before makeup on the left and after on the right, with an overlay showing where and what product was used.
It is all Nars makeup but the variety out there these days isn't bad and I think you can probably find the same colors in other product lines. (You might have to search a bit.)
The graphic design of the book is great. It's a spiral bound hard cover so you can use it without it flopping around while you're working. I would say the detailed pages with light grey text on white is a bit annoying but other than that the desing is practical and useful. ... Read more

Book Description

New York between the wars: the city of Babe Ruth, Checker cabs, and Zelda Fitzgerald's infamous dip in the fountain at the Plaza Hotel. That is the city that comes gloriously to life in this fascinating collection of 100 historical photographs of New York's notable streetscapes and landmarks. Discovered serendipitously by author David Stravitz when he was on a hunt for used camera equipment, these rare photographs of the city are accompanied here by informative captions and an insightful essay by architectural historian Christopher Gray.

Not only are these photographs being published for the first time, but the clarity and detail of the images, taken with a large-format camera, are astonishing. One can read the signage on the sides of buildings, examine the items in store windows, and see how people on the streets and sidewalks are dressed. From Trinity Church to Harlem, from Coney Island to Yankee Stadium, these images transport the reader into the heart of a vanished era, when men wore fedoras and the Empire City sparkled with promise. AUTHOR BIO: David Stravitz is a professional photographer, an industrial design consultant and product creator for many Fortune 500 companies, and the author of The Chrysler Building: Creating a New York Icon Day by Day. Christopher Gray, the author of Abrams' New York Streetscapes and other books on New York City architecture, has written the "Streetscapes" column in The New York Times since 1987. Book Description

The Beatles are always in the news and in our hearts. February 2004 marks the 40th anniversary of the Beatles' first trip to America, an historic event that was captured by the young photojournalist Harry Benson.

Benson was commissioned to accompany the Beatles to Paris in January 1964, where he took his famous photograph of the pillow fight the night they learned that "I Want to Hold Your Hand" had climbed to number one on the U.S. pop charts. He was with them on February 7, when they stepped out of their plane in New York and into the pandemonium of Beatlemania, American-style. In Miami, he introduced the Beatles to Muhammad Ali, and later that year he covered the filming of A Hard Day's Night. He was with them in Chicago in 1966, when John Lennon was quoted as saying that the Beatles were more famous than Jesus Christ, and covered their last tour as a band. He documented the eye of the hurricane: four guys in their twenties at the center of the known universe. This handsome, large-format book is a record of those amazing times. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars PHOTOGRAPHS
This is a delightful book replete with exceptional photographs of the Beatles during their early years performing. The majority of the photographs are taken in 1964, the year the Beatles came to America.

What makes this book such a treat is that there are some cute anecdotes about some of the photographs and I like the way an index print (or contact sheet) is included in a photo series of the Beatles, in February 1964 horsing around in their hotel room. They were like big children, natural and full of fun and the photographs do a good job of capturing that.

I love this book. Although there is very little in the way of new information, if any, it is still guaranteed to bring smiles to the faces of all who read it. I give it a hearty recommendation and a resounding, "YEAH, YEAH, YEAH!"

4-0 out of 5 stars The Beatles forever
It grieves me to give any Beatles photograph book only four stars, but I have to say these photos have almost all been published previously. If you're new to the Fabs or don't have many photograph compilations of them, then this will be a magnificent book. But if you've collected on them for years and own Benson's previous book, then many of the pictures will be recycled ones to you.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter, any book featuring the boys is always a treat, even if the information has been read a thousand times before. The quality of the book is good, the photos are reproduced beautifully, what's not to like? Incidentally, the cover photo of John, Paul and Ringo is one of the more evocative photos in the book, they usually crop poor Ringo out of this one. Enjoy!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fab Shots
This is a wonderful coffee table book. Unfortunately, I had to give this book four stars, and it's The Beatles! However, I was quite disappointed with the pictures that were displayed. I own a previous photo book that Harry Benson had published several years back that was smaller in size, and it was quite better than this one. I guess, I've been fabbed out with the pictures that have been released of The Beatles, and there wasn't a shot I had not seen as taken from a different angle or hasn't been shown either in film or video form. I guess it just didn't fulfill my expectations.

But nevertheless, I recommend this book for those who have not yet experienced the remarkable photography of Harry Benson, and photogenics of the topper most popper most band that ever existed. For all you black and white officinados, you'll love the blow ups.

5-0 out of 5 stars If Only There Were a Way to Describe How Great this Book Is!
Once there was a way to get back home--a haunting and beautiful lyric if there ever was one. But now there is another beautiful way to get back to the early days of the Beatles and beyond and to see in black and white what it must have been like to be with them during some of their most intimate moments! This large, arresting photographic journey back to the Beatles is a coffee table sized book that would make a perfect Christmas gift for any Beatles aficianado! Benson was there when it all began, and his stories and the photos of the Beatles at their best take us all on a long and winding road back to when the world was younger, and we were too--a time when there was a way, and the way seemed clear and lovely. ... I lost my "Maggie" this year. I was so sad but Bill Stanton captures the essence of this wonderful species and let me grieve and laugh at the same time. What a wonderful book. You don't have to love Bassett Hounds to read this. But if you lose your Bassett be sure to get this book. Bill Stanton needs to get posters on the market for us. Each photo is a gem.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a Gem
I'm a 30-year Basset lover and this book is one of the best. It's charming, funny and so very, very true. Bill Stanton is a master of getting just the right words to describe his hilarious (and superb) photos of Maggie, his now-11-year old Basset (check out the bagel pic and the one about "patience".). ALL Basset lovers should own this book (and his first one, "Maggie's Way"). I've given many as gifts and they are always a hit (also they're reasonably priced).

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Funny
I would recommend this to book to any dog lover. I picked up this book on the way out of the store, and couldn't put it down. I had to go back and buy it. This is a a gem of a book, and I'm sure you'll treasure the sage wisdom of this floppy eared philosopher. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars homage to JK
JK is a street photographer who transcends the boundaries. Eye of the artist and soul of the novelist. This book represents the closest thing to recent work. Unfortunately he has withdrawn his photographs from circulation. He is concentrating on photographing and not doing any printing.
The large format is perfect for these panoramic images. A statue of Lenin on a barge is my favorite pic. Worth the price of the book. However, there are many others to fall in love with.

5-0 out of 5 stars somewhat abstract yet powerful landsape photography
This book drives me up the wall, the pictures of wartorn lanscpaes, dispaced lonely images, almost completely void of people. The isolation one feels is intense, like walking into an old subway entrance when nobody is around. The photos document the natural erosion of landscapes and the 'personalities' that prevail as a result of neglect, beautifully framed by cold hard angles giving shape to the image at hand. And anogst all the torn metal and concrete then there is a picture of a lone tree in the middle of a baren snow-covered landscape, cold and alone and wonderful, just how you will feel when you read this. Not really a coffe table book, unless of course you never have have any guests.

5-0 out of 5 stars -
absolutly stuning, wonderful study of texture. and i bought it for... right after looking at it. if i don't see it every now and then i miss it. i want to say something more, something globaly political, but the images are so romantic it seems josef koudelka doesn't realize where he is. (that's a complement)

5-0 out of 5 stars Rich images
I consider Koudelka to be one of the finest photographers to come out of Prague. This book is handsome. The images are beautifully reproduced and the camera format seductive. If you appreciate textures and rich blacks, this edition will please you. The graphic art direction is smart and intelligent - a photo art book for the fine art collector.

5-0 out of 5 stars Different . . . heart-stopping
I like Koudelka's work very much. I saw this new book listed here in Amazon, but who wants to buy a photography book without looking at it? Even if you trust the photographer, what if the reproduction's no good? So I found it in a bookstore and looked. It's more abstract than his earlier work. There are few people; there are roads, rubbly sidwalks, a broken concrete statue of Lenin on a barge. The cropping and grouping of the images are intense and strange. It is awesomely beautiful. The reproduction is fine by me. If you like Koudelka and you buy this book, I think you will be very glad you did. If you don't know Koudelka, you might want to find the book and look. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars A real misnomer!
I had ordered a book about the "American Paint Horse" and expected a "photographic portrayal." What I got was a book about Americans who happen to own Paint horses -- I didn't want that and I don't need that!

The design and photography is quite pedestrian (pun intended), I had seen better photography by Stoecklein before.

At least I learned one lesson from this: don't trust customer reviews too much! Now I search for a real good coffee-tabler with real Paints and no people in it (no, I'm not a people-hater but I like things pure and neat).

Book Description

In this stunning pictorial journal, 100 talented professional and amateur photographers, many of them award winners, have captured the essence of our most profound relationship: family. Cutting across race and nationality, their photographs -- chosen from 40,000 entries worldwide -- bring to life the intimate moments and emotions shared by all families, whether in Australia, Rwanda, Colombia, or the United States.

Taken from the most ambitious photographic competition and exhibit ever staged, the M.I.L.K. Collection -- Moments of Intimacy, Laughter, and Kinship -- these photos depict the joy, heartbreak, and love that shaped and make up our lives. Here are the bonds that bring us together as parent and child, sister and brother, youth and elder. From a father's first look at his new baby to a weathered grandma's embrace, the laughter of octogenarian uncle and nephew to the promise of a mother's kiss, these powerful images tell the story of humanity and celebrate its deepest emotional connection.

The M.I.L.K. project was conceived to honor what it is to be part of a family. Look at the men, women, and children on these pages. In their faces you will recognize yourself and your loved ones, for you, too, are a member of the great kinship that is the human family. As James McBride writes, "without family, we are all a tribe of nomads, cut adrift, disconnected, wandering the earth with neither time nor place nor history to give our aching souls a home." Family is a universal homecoming, a commemoration of the human spirit itself. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Series
I was in Auckland, New Zealand at the end of my Christmas vacation, and walked into the M.I.L.K. exhibit by the harbour. The exhibit moved me like I had never been moved before. It made me laugh, cry, and brought a great end to my trip. Best yet, the books contain more shots than the exhibit did. The only problem with the book compared to the exhibit is that the explanation of the photographs are at the end of the book and not on the pages so one must flip back and forth a lot (the stories behind all of the pictures are half of the experience). I highly recommend the entire series- very well worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Moving
This wonderful book with images of family moved me to tears and laughter page after page. If you are part of a family you will be moved and want to share it with members of your own family.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing Book
While this book had the potential to be a real stunner, sadly
it falls short. First of all, the book jacket and 5 large
pages of written comments are practically illegible because
they are printed in silver ink. Very difficult to read. Why even
bother? Secondly, there are several fold out pages which are irrelevant, more gimmicky except for one vellum page imprinted with the profile of a child, which presents a lovely soft-looking image and then the more intense image.
Third, the photographs at the start of the book are just blatantly there...upon investigation, again with tiny print in silver, one gathers they are there to introduce the various topics of m.i.l.k.But their placement there does nothing to whet one's appetite. It seems redundant to see the same photo,
later in the chapter in which it belongs.

Fourth, the print size of the photographer's name next to the
photo is too miniscule. Again, difficult to read. Fifth, while the poetry and quotes are okay, I think it would have been more appropriate near each picture to have the information about the photographer instead.
After all, the photographers responsible for the images come
from all over the world, and what better international group
to help express "family"? Also, it would help give a clue as to
where the photo was taken. Instead, the information about each
photographer is relegated to the back of the book, and again,
is small and very difficult to read.

Additionally, I think the "Milk Collection" standing for
moments, intimacy, laughter, and kinship is too confusing
because of the current Milk Advertising Campaign When I first
heard of this book, I thought it was affiliated with the milk
ads.

The opening photo of new infant born still umbilically attached
is frightful. This photo works much better showing the
context of the 2 surgically attired attendants.

Redeeming this book are perhaps about ten really powerful,
special photographs, but the overall design of the book does
not enhance the images, it sorrowfully detracts from the flow
and impact of those few very wonderful images.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a stunner!!!
I thoroughly recommend this book for anyone who believes in families. The photo's are moving and breathtaking. The contributors are from all over the world making this a truely international book. If you buy one, I guarantee that you will want to buy another for someone you love.

5-0 out of 5 stars Meaningful Moments of Family Connection in Great Photos!
This volume celebrates the family as humanity's fundamental unit. Think of the book as a family album for all of humanity, by capturing all of the wonderful and touching moments (including the sad ones) that make us all part of the human family. As such, the book reinforces love over prejudice related to surface differences, and a human focus over a political one. Some will be disturbed by the images of women nursing, and others will find the messages to be a little too political. All will enjoy the great photography.

The book's images include black-and-white and color photographs of pregnancy, birth, nursing, child care, smiles, twins, wonder, dads, carrying, hugging, hanging out, music, beaches, saying goodbye, kisses, marriage, dancing, festivals, conversations, love, grandparents, the aged, eating ice cream together, walking, and intergenerational connections. These themes are sometimes formally built up, and sometimes just carried on for two images or three.

Perhaps the most stunning two photographs are of Kim Phuc. She was the little girl in the famous 1972 photograph of napalm's horror. The other shot is of her holding her baby, Thomas, while revealing some of her napalm scars on her shoulder and back. She had never expected to marry and be a mother. Her happiness in motherhood is bound to bring tears to your eyes.

The book's captions are interesting. Before the frontispiece, they are just one word per image. In the rest of the book, you get one quote per image to help put the visual message in perspective. You can either read these or not. The book works well either way.

The opening essay will seem overly political to some. If it doesn't agree with your views, just skip it and go on to the photographs.

The essay has a number of key sentences that capture the book's overall feel. "These images speak to all of us with clarity, universality and . . . joy." "Family is the last and greatest discovery. It is our last miracle." You are encouraged to see this as a "family album." As you look at the images, you should "hear the sounds of hearts beating all across the world." "We have hope." "That kind of love, family love, makes us powerful beyond measure." "May your love, like these pictures, last forever."

The project itself (Moments of Intimacy, Laughter, and Kinship -- MILK for short) is worthy of comment. The organization ran a global competition to select these images. 17,000 photographers provided 40,000 images. From those, 100 photographers are represented here. I think this is a good model for how more photography and art books should be done. Obviously, you have to have a great screening committee and editor, but we should more often try to create the combined best of all people. Don't you agree?

As a result of the competition and fine editing, the works are truly wonderful in their emotional appeal, compositions, and diversity of themes and styles. No single photographer could ever have hoped to capture all of this.

If you like the book, I suggest that you give it as a wedding gift to those you know who would enjoy it. I can think of no better time to reintroduce the concept of family.

After you enjoy the book, may I suggest that take some time in the month ahead to experience the most meaningful images in the book that you have not done lately? When was the last time you held a newborn? . . . sat on a park bench eating ice cream with an aged relative? . . . carried a sick person?

Let the beauty of the experiences flow into you!

Book Description

This is the first comprehensive publication on American photographer Jock Sturges (b.1947) compiled by the artist himself. It is nothing less than an ode to beauty. For more than 20 years, he has been taking photographs of girls growing up, both in his native California and at a nudist resort on the Atlantic coast of France. Nudity in Sturges' work has never been a cheap or tawdry gimmick, rather it is shown as human being's natural state. His photographs are an expression of the trust he has established over the years with the girls and their families. Calmly and almost casually, Sturges observes the aging process of his models. His striking long-term studies chart barely perceptible changes in their appearance, the slow maturing of the female body. Sturges preserves transient states that will never return; graceful forms that time will eventually extinguish. A sweet melancholia pervades Sturges' images as he knows that beauty is not an everlasting state-but a brief moment in time whose essence we should cherish. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The definitive Jock Sturges monograph
This is by far the best collection of Sturges' work in publication. Unlike the previous Aperture monographs, it displays the images as the artist intended. It follows his chronology, and that of the models, so you can see how they developed over time from young women and men; through their teens, to adults raising their own families. Telling their stories as well as painting their portraits.

He portrays them with the familiarity and intimacy of one who is almost family himself; and captures their characters as well as their forms. It is wonderful to watch how the girls and their families grow over time, how they change and develop. One wishes to know more about them as people, to understand the story behind the pictures.

His models, though nude, are more comfortable in that state than most people are clothed. There are no clothes, no outside trappings, to get in the way of the full expression of the person. The people he photographs are relaxed and peaceful.

His work is free of gimmicks, of artificial tension, of blatant eroticism. It is all about beauty and innocence.

He has received numerous accusations of child pornography and exploitation from narrow-minded and perverse individuals. One only needs to look at his work to dispel all notions of such. Only the most twisted and sick-minded person could find his work pornographic. As a Christian, I find it to be a wonderful expression of the beauty of God's greatest creation.

The tones of his images are mostly soft, low-contrast. The beach images reflect in sand and sea the same light gradations and textures visible on the bodies of those he photographs; the models seeming to become a part of their environment, but still standing out from the background. Others are more contrasty, both in tone and setting, complimenting rather than echoing the models.

The printing is exquisite. Having attended two gallery shows of Sturges' work, and seen the prints, I can say that the book, though it can't reproduce the richness of the tones of the silver prints, does admirably in approximating them. The quality of the binding is superb; and the introductory texts are well-worth reading.

A book that i highly recommend for all lovers of find photography.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sheer beauty - a look at life
I am a white, male, Christian, conservative, Republican grandfather that teaches Sex Education to students the same age as some of Mr. Sturges' friends. How wonderful it is that my students can now see what other normal people their own age actually look like, and that their own body is OK!. Usually, they only get to see what Madison Avenue thinks that they should look like. How sad that Jock is persecuted, while everyday we see the use of little bare babes to sell toilet paper, skin lotion or fashionable pants. I love the book. Thank you Jock, and thank you, Amazon, for carrying Jock's work.
