5-0 out of 5 stars Erotica Through the Ages.
This book is a fine representation of erotica through the ages with examples from portfolios of great photographers. This is a great anthology of primitive to the modern world of glamour/erotic photography.

Some are really masterpieces; others are just... casual photos with high quality.
Maybe is a good idea just buy the 70% of the book

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing content, nice pics
Okay. It's a book with naked women. Some of the pictures are nicely arranged, but most are just the usual vanilla pornography -- and I still don't quite get why it is that the bondage theme is so universally considered erotic. Seems like fully 25% of the pics in this book are devoted to bondage or lesbian bondage. I'd much rather just see nice bodies in interesting poses. A better buy is "Passion and Line" -- and it's something you can keep on your coffee table for public view without the threat of embarassing explanation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, arousing art!
Wow! I bought this book as a Christmas present for my husband - I haven't given it to him yet, but I love it. Beautiful photos, arousing photos, artistic photos... This is a wonderful book of art. I am in absolute awe of the beauty of the female form, and the quality of photography in the book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatest photographers, amaizing pictures!!!!!!!!!!!
If you are love glamour photography, this is one of the better books. World's great photographers share thier images, ideas, incredible lighting techiques here. This book will inspire others, who enjoy taking pictures, how to see things in different light. Not just "nudie" pictures, but incredible artform that kept me amazed and impressed. ... Read more

If you like this book , his new book (Lost Angeles) is going to blow your mind. Trust me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dreamy & Very Moody!
This is a beautiful book! I was so anxious to see Paul Jasmin's long-awaited first book, having recently heard so much about this remarkable photographer. Over the years, I have researched many photographers, but wasn't familiar with Paul's work at all. Well, I now have another favorite photographer. These are stunningly seductive, moody, romantic, and erotic images, to name only a few feelings that came to me while viewing this sampling of his work. These images are taken from the 1950's right up to 2001. A great selection that covers male and female nudes, portraits of friends, people of the entertainment & art world, fashion shoots and peaceful travel images.

Jasmin states, "I still dream in the 1950's", well, lucky for us. You get a feeling from these photographs that you don't get from the current photographers images, and that's a feeling of innocence. A time when sex was more innocent and much more sensual. A long time friend of Bruce Weber, you can see the influence in a few of these photos. Paul Jasmin have appeared in many leading fashion magazines such as Arena, Vogue, W, and L'uomo Vogue. There are three informative and touching essays by Sofia Coppola, Grazia D'Annunzio, and critic Nicolai Ouroussoff. They help to highlight & explain Jasmin's life and career. Arena Editions has again published another striking book on quality paper, that is handsomely designed.

This is a rare opportunity to enjoy a photographer who exposes us to a time that is now lost, a time of innocence and youthful carefree ways. I really enjoyed this collection of his images. Highly Recommended! ... Read more

Book Description

Use the photographic lighting techniques of the pros! Featuring a selection of beautifully presented shots by well-known professionals, this stunning guide explains how to select and use proper lighting when photographing models in glamour images for beauty, fashion, and lifestyle publications. Many glamour photos feature erotic situations and partially clothed or nude models, so the lighting considerations must take many factors into account. Organized by the type of lighting used--ambient or daylight, single, multiple, etc.--they are accompanied by the expert explanations of what inspired the shot and unique lighting and processing techniques used, as well as overhead views and a perspective drawing of the lighting setup. Information is also included on lighting theory, equipment, and terminology.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best lighting books
I have been collecting books on photo technique for almost 5 years now. I have been a big fan of the pro lighting series books and have most of them in my collection. I find that these books are really great for inspiration and to answer the "how was it done?" question. "Lighting for Glamour" seems to feature more of the types of photos I find in my magazines. Which is nice. I would recommend going to a local store and looking this and the pro-lighting series books over first before buying and then get the 30% off discount on Amazon.

1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading title
This book uses VERY editorial fashion photographs as examples... but does'nt explain the VERY complicated lighting. It shows a very basic diagram, thst looks to me like the author made up without the input of the actual photographer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Glamour Cookbook
Bavister's book is full of "cookbook" style lighting setups with one, two, three, and more lights. While the clean, uncluttered diagrams make them easy to recreate, the book does assume that you have the lights, reflectors, gobos, stands, and other equipment required. In short, you're going need studio gear to pull off most of the shots.

That said, great photos, with lots of different styles and variations, make this a book I often pull down simply to spark my creativity. If Bavister had published it as an art book, with out the studio setups and diagrams, it would still have been worth the price.

One note: some reviewers don't understand that, in the photography world, glamour is often a euphemism for nudes. The fact that Amazon didn't mention that the book contains them is no reason to downgrade it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware!
At no point in the books sample pages nor in it's summary does it warn the reader/buyer about the pornagraphic content of the sample photos.I have no objection to artists compiling books around their interests, but PLEASE let the buyer know that the content of the photos may be objectionable.Or at the very least, include them in your samples. I found this book to be quite offensive rather than instructional, and I returned it back to Amazon.Very dissapointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Creative and light

Book Description

Drawing on classical paintings, historical portraiture, and 19th-century pornographic studio photographs, the erotic images of Jan Saudek reveal a world of fantasy where artistic play and expression are given free range. Using elaborate backdrops and magical costumes, Saudek is both voyeur and participant, photographer and model, shifting back and forth in a style that lends the term autoportraiture new meaning. These 146 color photographs, featuring new and previously unpublished images with Saudek's commentaries, are as much about the artist as about the characters he creates. As Saudek states, "I don’t have the capacity to portray other people’s lives. I am portraying my own." "Spending time with Saudek’s images is an unsettling experience, a roller-coaster ride of attraction and repulsion, confirmation and confrontation." — The Spectator ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not For The Shallow
Jan Saudek's photographs are certainly not for the backwoods Playboy fan; Saudek's work is much deeper and tinged with the Eastern European candor and fantasy akin to a Jerzy Kosinski tale. Saudek's literary narrative is firmly established in each image-story which is made more believable - as all good stories are - by his use of real, imperfect models. Saudek continues his story-plays by adding color to his prints in a very loose manner as if to wink at us as he embellishes the sometimes acrid image with a thin, sweet confection. This collection of Saudek's images gives a complete range of his work and is of excellent print quality; a rarity today at this price. As this edition demonstrates, Saudek is a major player in keeping the 'fine art' in the photographic medium while others play with computers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Blends traditional images with elements of the bizarre
Jan Saudek's Realities features the author's nude photography which blends traditional images with elements of the bizarre. All ages, sexes, and manner of men and women are included in a title which can be as shocking as eye-opening.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not very classical photos
Quiet a wide range of faked up "hand painted" photos, with subject varying from fat to slim, tall to short, male and female. I found some to be gross, some stupid, others interesting, some sexual, some quaint, mostly nudes but not always- but overall none struck me as simply good looking pictures. This book is for explorers of photography more than anything else. If the book cover is available - that's actually a bit more than what you get. I took someone's claim of "classic" photos and the lounging woman holding a skull (nude female Hamlet) to mean revamping the good-ole, graceful and refined (sometimes naughtily refined) nude classics like Venus emerging from the sea, various Greco-Roman statues, and flappers in breast revealing gowns - instead, most of these are just "experimental" photos which owe only a muddied color look to being classic. Maybe classics for the photographer - not really classic photos. I wish the author would go ahead and revamp the old classics, providing a modern "French postcard" series of photos. Oh well, you can only wish and hope that some day someone will... ... Read more

Book Description

Late in 2002 British actress Lynn Redgrave learned that she had breast cancer. After sharing the news with her family she made the decision to undergo surgery, followed by a month-long regimen of chemotherapy and radiation. Together with her daughter Annabel Clark, then a photography student, she determined to record the experience through journal entries and Annabel's photographs, creating a compelling document of treatment and recovery with an unprecedented level of intimacy. With heart-rending honesty, in bittersweet moments as beautiful as they are difficult, the photographs and journal entries illustrate a personal journey through the leading cancer diagnosed in women today. An essay by the well-known writer and medical authority Dr. Barron Lerner provides further insight into the disease-where we were twenty years ago in awareness of cancer, where we are now, and how far we still have to go to create awareness. Journal offers information and provides resources to patients and survivors, and spurs further research for women's health. "Went to the service at the Congregational church....By the end I feel peaceful and optimistic…a way to be part of the community. A way to feel I am not alone in my worries. Upsetting phone calls regarding Annabel photographing at chemo, etc. Thank God that finally got cleared up. I cried so much. I realized how much her documenting this means to me." (Lynn Redgrave) ... What began as simple curiosity blossomed into an object of national pride; when Seydou Keitabought a camera to take pictures of his family, neighbors assumed his services were for hire and enlistedhim to take portraits of themselves and their homes, turning a carpenter into a photographer and a hobbyinto artistic expression. In such a way did the self-taught Keita become the official photographer of Malifrom 1962 to 1977, based almost solely on his impeccable reputation for quality and originality thatdeveloped by word of mouth. This stunning collection of 206 black-and white-portraits illustrates Keita'spride in his country and his gift for capturing the personalities of his subjects. His aim was to create themost natural settings and poses for the people in front of the lens, putting them at ease and gently nudgingthem into surrendering their inhibitions. Keita utilized a wide variety of props to further this goal, includingbicycles, telephones, radios, and musical instruments. He also kept a variety of clothing on hand--bothtraditional and European--to help his subjects achieve a desired look or style. What comes across mostclearly in these photos is the beauty of the people; Keita brilliantly exposes their essence by focusing ontheir images. ... Read more

Book Description

A new mode of masturbating into the next millennium Anyone who has seen her Digital Diaries has intimate knowledge of Natacha Merritt. And of her friends, male and female, and her acquaintances as well. But Merritt's favourite motif is herself: she poses almost every minute of the day for her camera, taking photographs of herself in bed, in the shower, having sex with her friend, masturbating with and without accessories, from every imaginable angle and with the camera usually at arm's length.

Face to face with Merritt's photographs one can reflect on intimacy and publicity in the digital age, on narcissism even, or on radical self-exploration with the help of the camera. But this all sounds better as Natacha Merritt herself once put it: in her view, she has found a new mode of masturbating her way into the next millennium. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This is not intended as art.
Maybe it even should have stayed where it belonged: the internet. I was at a bookstore and was baffled and shocked at first site. However I'm working on an open-mind excercise so I returned to the book and went slowly page by page back to front. Again I was baffled reading her 'thanks for unconditional love' at the last pages. Is this love ?! no, it isn't - it is lust. Love is not lust. You may feel an intense 'love' in the course of sex because there is, indeed, an intense mental connection as somehow Natacha discribes as love in a passage. She is confusing the means and the goal.

The pictures are amateur pictures but they are all different. I'm sure there's more talent out there but she happens to be lucky enough being 'discovered'. It's not porn at all except for a few maybe.

A question could be if she has 'a problem'. What have the consequences been so far for her after the publicity of this book. What have the consequences been so far for the models who were involved in her photo projects. What about AIDS. Funny, but no word about AIDS in this book - bothers me.

I did some internet research prior to buying the book and I advise you do too.

Since she is the one taking the pictures and that it wasn't intended for anything commercial and that her goal was solely self exploration, as she calls it, I decided the book's ok since it is her account of her sex experience where the other person is also an important part of it. The physical sex connection and the continous thrills and mysterious wonders she finds/found in it. Not forced by someone else or by any mentally destructive porn industry which is really deranged these days.

2-0 out of 5 stars lame
SO, to share pictures in massive quantities is called art by the publishers. The book does not offer anything interesting other than exploit voyeurism, not even political feminist views. LAME.

4-0 out of 5 stars A raw and honest look into a young woman's sexuality
Natacha Merritt's Digital Diaries is less an art book of nude photos than a raw and honest look --- some would say peek --- into a young woman's sexuality. It is not just a look, but a visual documentation of sexual experimentation including both a casual sexual situations and more fetishist imagery.

Digital Diaries is also very sexy just like its author-photographer. Natacha doesn't convey a shy personality, but actually comes off as a very liberated and aggressive young woman. Her book is not for everyone and certainly not for someone who doesn't have an open mind. Those who are willing to explore the many faces of sexuality, they can't go wrong by acquiring Ms. Merritt's Digital Diaries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Sexy
I found this book to be extremely sexy, sensual and refreshing. It will appeal to the natural voyeur in anyone and I hope it encourages more people to go get a digital camera and do the same.

Hats off to Natacha!

4-0 out of 5 stars Porn/art?What's the problem? It was all once PORN!!
Newton, Mapplethorpe, Outterbridge, Man Ray, Brassai, Brandt, Weston, Stieglitz.....
It was all porn, right?
I am a big fan of the publisher (for putting out edgy and thought provoking material) and the general style/commentary.
I have had an interest in this book ever since I read a story on how it was made.it was a creation of the publisher more than the artist.Girl meets digital camera, takes pictures, find mode of expression, artists admire, work evolves, publisher hears about it and prints it.Anyone who is any sort of photographer would agree that the images in the first portion of the book are essentially ...[fluff].But the expression is honest and raw. What more could you ask for?

If you have a problem with Porn, don't buy the book.If you want Porn, it would be a waste of money to buy the book.If you have a problem with genitalia, don't even look at it.If you want an honest, raw, and different view of human sexuality though someone else's eyes, this is the book for you. It's refreshing that someone is making these images, someone is printing them, and that someone is thinking about them.

Ps.It is a bit short and disorganized.Good for the collection, but not for the personal library. ... Read more

Book Description

In the Industrial North at the end of the 1970s, people were at work using hands and machinery to make things we all use. In the mid 80s, in Wisconsin, they built supercomputers; at the same time, near Boston, they typed on desktop computers. In New York City, in the early 90s, people stood on stock floors, trading. In 1995, in Omaha, they sat at computers, cold calling as telemarketers; and in Cleveland, in that same year, they used their human skills in traditional ways to once again craft products we all depend on. Work, work, work--we spend the better part of our lives on the job, be it in a factory or an antiseptic office, or somewhere else in the vast assembly line in between. Tireless photographer Lee Friedlander, the maniacally inclusive but blessedly nonchalant cataloguer of Americana--her monuments, jazz musicians, and urban landscapes--here presents 16 years of Americans at work. A collection of commissioned portfolios, some made at the request of art institutions, others at the behest of company CEOs, Lee Friedlander At Work also documents, albeit subtly, 16 years of one of America's most exceptional and hard-working photographers--at work.

Lee Friedlander might be the most versatile photographer alive. --Malcolm Jones, Jr.,Newsweek

3-0 out of 5 stars Average and generic
I've been searching for some really good lighting books to provide some insight into different methods of working with light and was excited to receive this book. When I got it and flipped through, I was over run with standard stock and uninteresting images.

While the copy is good, and pretty detailed, the concepts are pretty mundane. If you are looking for a book with average key lighting techniques, as well as close lighting ratios (1:1, 2:1 and 3:1) then this book is for you.If you are looking for some fo the more fine art effects, (Drastic lighting ratios, smoothing of skin, etc.) I'd look to another book.

One reviewer mentioned that they were drawn to the book by the cover photograph. This photograph is great and has a fine dramatic lighting set up, there are maybe one or two more in the book on par with this one (style wise), but not much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on portrait photography I've seen thus far.
I was drawn to this title by the striking photograph on the cover and bought it immediately after flipping through it.The strength of the example photographs makes "Family Portraits" case study approach particularly effective.

Unlike many other photography books, "Family Portraits" uses subjects with a wide range of skin tones.Examples include both color and black & white photographs, sometimes juxtaposed for comparison.Since this book is part of a professional photography series, Daye assumes possession of some lighting equipment. For many of the outdoor shots, fill flash and/or a reflector were the limits of what was required.

The photographs in "Family Portraits" are posed pictures. But because they are designed to seem natural, their study may help you notice certain compositions and lighting conditions when taking candids. If you are looking for a good idea book for taking pictures of people, this title is an excellent place to start.

Book Description

Differing from other picture books on New York, New Yorkers: As Seen by Magnum Photographers introduces a gallery of eye-catching untamed images of the metropolis, taken by Magnum photographers. Known for their independent spirit, they proffer scenes that can best be described as bouncy, cryptic, melancholy, droll, or glamorous, often bringing these clashing possibilities together against great odds, in a single image. For these pictures to have been on target, they had to be off-kilter-as charged with contradictions as the realities of their subject. The photographers featured here come from many countries and armed with a range of purposes, united only by their membership in Magnum Photos, the renowned photo agency. As the New York Yankees are respected for the depth of their bullpen, the Magnum photographers are admired for the sharpness of their eye. Though best known for reportage of global wars and crises, they have created a New York archive of great magnitude documenting the last sixty years of New York's-and Magnum's-history. Of the roughly one hundred and forty photographs in New Yorkers, less then ten percent have been previously published. Widely published art critic Max Kozloff selected photographs these pictures more for their pungency then their unfamiliarity. Mindful of their story potentials, but with an eye to the visual rhythm of faces and gestures, he sequenced to imply various overlapping themes-for example, the fizz of parties and the momentum of streets, or the hard sell of Times Square and the anger of political demonstrations. While the images retain their original captions, they ricochet with multiple meanings. Leafing through the book is like walking the streets of New York, beguiled by their implausible and mixed energies, renewed at each turn of a corner.Through New York's cafeterias, barbershops, fish markets, subways, its fish markets, and taxi cabs, Chinese or Italian weddings, gyms, protest parades, and fancy balls, the photographers have roamed, photographing the city's denizens with a realism that stings and a wit that sparkles. Featured here is surprising work by legends Bruce Davidson, Inge Morath, Dennis Stock, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Ferdinando Scianna, Leonard Freed, Richard Kalvar, Burt Glinn, Elliott Erwitt, Eli Reed, Raymond Depardon, Eve Arnold, and many more. New Yorkers: As Seen by Magnum Photographers emphasizes the color work of the Magnum photographers, much of it surprisingly early, and contains an essay by Kozloff, who tackles his offbeat subject with relish.Exhibition:January - May 2004Museum of the City of New York1220 Fifth Avenue at 103rd Street, New York For more information, please call 212-534-1672 ... Book Description

Robert Maxwell is one of the most exciting new photographers to have emerged on the savagely competitive scene of fashion and editorial photography. In Photographs, Maxwell shares his edgy nudes, portraits, and still lifes that are at once modern and, strangely, part of the past. Much has been written about the lack of innovation in contemporary photography, and this book, Maxwell's first, underscores why he is widely considered to be one of the most interesting photographers of his generation. Combining a rough-edged eroticism with a genuine interest in form and beauty, Maxwell's nudes-perhaps the most difficult genre to master-are in a class by themselves. His elegant portrait studies of his family, friends, and passersby, are fresh and original and bring to mind the groundbreaking work of Irving Penn or of Richard Avedon. But Maxwell is distinguished from his modernist forebears both aesthetically and by his unique approach to the medium: He utilizes the nineteenth-century glass wetplate technology known as the ambrotype-called the "black art" of photography for its rich, dark and reflective surfaces. These gorgeous glass objects, as well as the artist's platinum and silver prints, come alive in this striking book that is certain to become a milestone in the art of bookmaking. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful photos of all types of subjects
Maxwell has turned his camera toward a variety of subjects, from flowers, to fish, to beautiful women. The women range from his babysitter to the world-famous actress Milla. He finds beauty everywhere, and the quality of his originals and the printing of this book are superb.

2-0 out of 5 stars It's good and well marketed but not great
When I first saw this book I thought the pictures were polaroid prints. I then found out that a bunch were ambrotypes. That's pretty cool, but they don't knock me out. Lots of nudes and flowers (some nudes and flowers in the same picture) and it starts to get repetitive. Aside from the process, the subject matter has been done and he is not breaking new ground. I like his editorial work. He is a gifted photographer and works very hard. This is a book of cash cows. If you have to buy this book, go ahead. You'll get bored with it after a while....

5-0 out of 5 stars A Collection of Achingly Beautiful Photographs
I've seen some of Maxwell's work in various magazines (Vanity Fair, W, etc.) and have always found myself drawn to his pictures. The lighting and staging of his photos are always interesting, and they just draw the viewer in. His photos have such a unique style, that I can almost always tell immediately if they were taken by him. Anybody who would like a book they can pore over and over again should buy this one! The photos are mesmerizing!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Candidate for Best Photo Book of 2000
This is an amazing, beautiful book--beautifully made and filled with beautiful images. I had not heard of Maxwell before seeing it, but he is, without doubt, one of the finest of today's photographers. There are nudes, flowers, children, old men (including a great picture of a tough old face that could have walked right out of a Cormac McCarthy novel), animals, even spoons clothespinned to a line, which is one of the most beautiful compositions in the book, and some very touching pictures of children, especially some of his son. One of the finest images appears on the back dustjacket: a girl with long, ringlet curls, her back to us, sits atop an old wooden fence. It has a poignancy and touch of nostalgia that makes it nearly seem a glimpse into the past. Maxwell uses a 19th century technique to make his work and that technique often heightens this effect. The book seems very modern with its bold nudes but also partakes of the past with all the innocent images of old people, children, and animals. It's a great and happy book, a celebration of life: adulthood and sexuality, childhood and innocence, nature and the things of our making. I just wish more books like this were being published. And it also includes a fine interview with the artist.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Personal Album
In Robert Maxwell's first book of photographs, the viewer turns the last pages knowing they have been made privy to what is essentially a very personal photo album. With the exception of a limited few, most images are heartfelt displays of Maxwell's family and friends. Even his still life images have a personal feel, as if taken in the home rather than a studio. Maxwell's nudes are more intimate than his contemporaries. His use of the ambrotype process renders a timeless quality to the nudes, eliciting a romantic look that brings the viewer closer to the image, with all of its dark imperfections. The female nudes done in silver gelatin are actually taken from a closer perspective, with torsos and sections of the body on display, evoking a statuesque quality that can almost be touched. At times Maxwell needs to make it overwhelmingly clear we know he's a family man, both in pictures and words. Photographs of his son and various other children fill a significant portion of the book. This is the book's only shortcoming, partially due to the subjective nature of the material. In the interview by Genevieve Field that begins "Photographs" Maxwell asserts he's just a simple, family guy from suburbia who loves his wife, and his wife trusts him. Who cares? The interview is about as significant as Maxwell's introductory quote that informs the reader he'd blind himself and forsake his art for his wife - and go "love her with everything he's got." Fortunately, the interview is short and the photographs that follow are brilliant. Aside from Maxwell's dramatic, verbal posturing and family man sentimentality, "Photographs" is a significant monograph, and an insightful introduction to a promising photographer. ... Read more

Book Description

The human hip is one of the most enigmatic and alluring parts of the body. Photographer Patrick Roddie makes portraits by framing the sensuous curve and swell of his subjects to create a stunning body of work that reveals endless variations on the same shot. Hips is a collection of 250 arresting and inspired photographs of hips (some in costume, some in body paint, some in nothing at all), taken at the vibrant and insanely creative annual international arts festival known as Burning Man. Each subject is photographed in the exact same position, but the images themselves are varied and unique, providing a rich kaleidoscope of self-expression and individuality wherein conventional rules and regulations no longer apply. This highly original photographic document, captured in a chunky and irresistible package, portrays a style and sensibility that cannot be properly defined with words, and offers a visual portfolio to spur the imagination from an instinctive photographer who shoots straight from the hip. ... Book Description

For the past seven years, Hellen van Meene has been producing intimate portraits of adolescents. Though the introspective gaze of her models suggest that these are spontaneous, private moments in the lives of her subjects, the carefully considered natural light, lush textures, and striking compositions betray van Meene's hand in choreographing each image down to the finest detail. Throughout, the picturesque qualities are undercut by a disquieting tension: the models' clothes are ill-fitting or inside-out; one girl is asked to lie in a cold bath, fully clothed; another models a fresh bruise. This intimate collaboration between the photographer and her models simultaneously exposes the uncertain nature of adolescent identities and the complicated act of capturing them on film.

Book Description

Drawing from those same impulses that compel us all to take pictures of our family, this book considers the entirely unique response that photographers have to their own families, and the significance of this work in the broader context of their photography. Family is a collection of almost 200 photographs by a wide range of photographers that consciously reflect on the emotions and experiences wrought and woven into the family unit. It presents the work of some of the earliest photographers to consider the subject, alongside those taking pictures of their family today. Rather than a sociological study that maps its metamorphosis, the book marks the curiosity for family and the element of autobiography that continues to stand the test of time.

Family: Photographers photograph their families reflects upon some of the meanings behind our family photographs and considers the time-honoured relationship between family and photography. The normally private and intimate world of familial relationships is revealed to us through the work of these photographers, and through their vision we are reminded of the common patterns and forms that underlie our most intimate and personal emotional ties.

The book is not organised chronologically or by theme and chapter, but many of the ideas and themes we associate with family photographs are discernible through sequenced stories and the juxtaposition of single images. Each selection of photographs will be represented by a short commentary placed at the back of the book. ... Book Description

Diane Arbus (1923-1971) is renowned for her provocative and unsettling portraits of modern Americans. This book presents a significant body of previously unpublished pictures by Arbus and proposes a radically new way to understand her goals, strategies, and overall work.Diane Arbus: Family Albums examines unknown contact sheets from several of Arbus's portrait sessions, including more than three hundred photographs she took of a New York family one weekend in 1969. Anthony W. Lee and John Pultz put to the test Arbus's claim that she was developing a "family album." They present other images Arbus shot for Esquire magazine (including pictures of the families of Ricky Nelson, Jayne Mansfield, and Ogden Reid) and discuss her interest in photographic groupings of both traditional and alternative families. Challenging common interpretations of Arbus, the authors reveal a photographer far more savvy with the camera, more aware of photography as an artistic and commercial practice, and more sensitive to the social and cultural tensions of the 1960s than has been acknowledged before. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Poor quality photos and instruction
I purchased the "Landscape" book by the same publisher and thought it was very good so I then purchased this book. Night and day! The photo and printing quality of this book is terrible. Most photos are so washed out or dark that you can't understand the point the author is making regarding instruction. Additionally, the photos themselves appear to be printed at around 100DPI or so and have banding, etc. . .

The instruction is not bad but given the poor quality of the photos and printing it is too hard to decipher what he is trying to say. ... Read more
