Book Description

William Eggleston's Guide was the first one-man show of color photographs ever presented at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Museum's first publication of color photography. The reception was divided and passionate. The book and show unabashedly forced the art world to deal with color photography, a medium scarcely taken seriously at the time, and with the vernacular content of a body of photographs that could have been but definitely weren't some average American's Instamatic pictures from the family album. These photographs heralded a new mastery of the use of color as an integral element of photographic composition.Bound in a textured cover inset with a photograph of a tricycle and stamped with yearbook-style gold lettering, the Guide contained 48 images edited down from 375 shot between 1969 and 1971 and displayed a deceptively casual, actually super-refined look at the surrounding world. Here are people, landscapes, and odd little moments in and around Eggleston's hometown of Memphis--an anonymous woman in a loudly patterned dress and cat's eye glasses sitting, left leg slightly raised, on an equally loud outdoor sofa; a coal-fired barbecue shooting up flames, framed by a shiny silver tricycle, the curves of a gleaming black car fender, and someone's torso; a tiny, gray-haired lady in a faded, flowered housecoat, standing expectant, and dwarfed in the huge dark doorway of a mint-green room whose only visible furniture is a shaded lamp on an end table. For this edition of William Eggleston's Guide, The Museum of Modern Art has made new color separations from the original 35 mm slides, producing a facsimile edition in which the color will be freshly responsive to the photographer's intentions.

[These] pictures are like no one else's. At once ordinary and spectacular, they look like someone's not particularly interesting snapshots until their matter-of-fact beauty andgorgeousness kick in.--Vince Aletti
As pictures, these seem to me perfect. . .collectively a paradigm of a private view. . .described here with clarity, fullness and elegance. --John Szarkowski

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent re-release.
For those of you who already know Eggleston, there is something in particular to note about this book. I also purchased Eggleston's "The Hasselblad Award 1998," which features a handful of the same shots in Guide. This provided me an opportunity to compare the same shots in two different publications. There is absolutely no comparison to the superior quality of the prints in William Eggleston's Guide. In fact, shots that I loved in Guide I would not have even really noticed in Hasselblad (very poor color separation, blue tints, etc.). This is the book to get.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bill's artful snapshots.
William Eggleston's photos grow on you. Look through this book for the first time and the contents seem a bit like ordinary snapshots but look again and then again and with each viewing the images become more familiar (still with something fresh to discover each time) but now they start to blend together seamlessly. One reason for this, I think, is that the photos capture the everyday and the ordinary. Taken around Eggleston's hometown of Memphis and in the Deep South, they show some of his relations, street scenes, interiors, buildings and more, though the captions only state the locations. John Szarkowski says in the books introduction "..today's most radical and suggestive color photography derives much of its vigor from commonplace models" This capturing of the everyday and in color divided the critics in 1976 when the Museum of Modern Art used seventy-five of Egglestons's images for their first exhibition of color photography. The 'Guide' unfortunately only shows forty-eight from the show.

Art photography until this exhibition was in black and white and had been for years, color photos were mostly for ads, commercial print and snapshots. Thankfully the Museum's curator of photography, Szarkowski, had the good sense to allow the public to see something new and fresh. I think the 'Guide' is a good introduction to Eggleston and if you like his creative vision, as I do, have a look at these two books of his work, 'The Democratic Forest' and 'Ancient and Modern'. Both are full of wonderful color photos of the American everyday. ... Read more

Book Description

Anne Geddes' photographs of babies have charmed countless fans for many years. In Until Now, Geddes takes us behind the scenes to find out what she was thinking when she captured these images, her 113 most-favorite photographs. Her text also provides a background to each photograph and helps readers understand how this artist and her subjects work together.Consider, for example, Geddes' comments about the shot she captured in 1991, which she titled "Rebecca": "She didn't want to hold the tulips, and she didn't want to sit on the chair-there were too many other things to be done. How do you get a 14-month-old to sit still? Show her the jelly bean, and then put it down her trousers."From signature photos of newborns to touching interactions between parent and child to enthusiastic poses from older children, this gift-size hardcover edition of Until Now gathers together Geddes' most revealing and compelling work. Whether she's posing babies in the garden or in the studio, Anne Geddes' deep affection for babies and children is obvious in the award-winning images she creates. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Big, Bold Baby Book!
The hardcover version of this book deserves more than five stars. It is the most enjoyable and rewarding book of baby photographs that it has been my pleasure to view and hug. I vastly prefer it to the paperback version.

The book has lots of modestly done baby nudity, and a little partial adult female nudity that is totally tame and artistic.

One of the pleasures of this book is that the images are HUGE! In some cases (such as with preemies), the babies are almost life size. The reproduction quality and paper are outstanding, so you can almost feel like you are present with these sleeping, mewling, cuddling, delightful little creatures!

I recently reviewed Ms. Geddes's Black-and-White: Photofolio. Until Now overcomes the limitations that I found in that wonderful work. There are many more images here (113), the size and reproduction are better here, and Ms. Geddes has provided interesting notes about the origins of each photograph.

The book begins with a nice quotation from Pablo Casals about the potential that is represented by each new life. The images connect the babies to nature (appearing as part of fruits and vegetables, masquerading as insects and animals, and overwhelmed with flowers) and to other babies and people. Many of the images also play with the thought that babies are angelic. Beyond that, there is a strong message of the connection that all humans have with one another.

If you are like me, you won't fall in love with all of these photographs. Sometimes sleeping babies aren't exactly the right models for the compositions Ms. Geddes has designed. On the other hand, sleeping babies are perfect in many images here, such as the baby lying upside down on a woman's abdomen.

But almost all of the images of babies and children who are awake are amazingly good. How does she do it?

A few of the images where the babies are extremely small seemed a bit contrived to me, but they are technically very well done.

My only complaint about the book is that a few of the images on two pages are marred by the center crease, and should have been reproduced differently.

Here are some of my many favorites in this volume:

Zac & Georgina 1991; Woodland Fairy 1995; Phillip & Arin 1993; Eddie with Scott & Sean 1993; Cabbage Kids 1991; Caleb (head version) 1997; India 1992; C.J. 1996; Ruby 1994; Zac 1992; Rebecca 1991; Christopher 1995; Four Angels 1996; Peony Angel 1995; Trent & Joel 1992; Aleesha & Jessie 1992; Crocodile Tears 1990; Linda & Ben 1994; Aunty Biddy's Face 1996; Boys & Doves 1993; Kieran & Abigail as Angels; and Jim, Flora & Pearl.

I also suggest that you think about how you could create your own imaginative versions of these images with your own children and grandchildren. Imagine what a great gift of enhanced self-image that could be for the child in the future. Rather than wanting to hide her or his baby picture (like those nude shots on the rug), the child can draw upon the photograph as a source of self-image and strength.

Evoke the potential of all those around you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful
Anne Geddes has presented us with a marvel, a book that speaks volumes but has no words. Page after page the reader is introduced to babies, beautiful, huggable babies. Page after page the reader can enjoy the greatest of miracles and Ann Geddes babies are truly delightful and the reminder that miracles happen every day.

1-0 out of 5 stars No wonder we're over a six billion and rapidly expanding.:P
I call it "maternal porn". Not the usual kind of "porn" or even "kiddie porn", but something that would easily manipulate a woman's maternal instincts until she's almost feral. This stuff seems to be designed to make a woman ache like an untamed animal to feel a baby pushing through her birth canal and its toothless maw kneading at her nipple. But childbirth is originally for adding to the population, not just exciting a woman's most primal urges. So this kind of exploitation can be almost frightening in a whole new light.

So such books only objectify babies into trophies for women to covet after - and it's already long after the womenkind decided not to be labelled just as something that makes babies anymore. No wonder, Freud would have a field day!

1-0 out of 5 stars Kitsch and Completely Disgusting...
Geddes' manages to degrade and isolate her subjects. Her prehistoric "cutsie" images, though appealing to a kitsch market, do not allow for a social comment to transcend the visual confines of her exploitive commercial "photography". In some senses, she could be seen as a radical post-modernist artist, as she abstracts the subject from social normality and removes any dignity from the development of the child, if that was her so calling in contemporary art. Yet it is frightening to be in an age where people will grasp such superficially degrading images. Geddes has made a personal fortune off photographing babies, subjects usually positioned in inhumane circumstances (ie: babies in flowerpots or dipped in custard), which removes human dignity and allows us to question Geddes moral intent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Baby Bald Eagle
I am a friend of the mother of the Baby Bald Eagle lovingly known as Libby. Clare is a very special woman and regards Anne Geddes as a close friend. She continues to get inspiration from a life size photo displayed in her home of her beautiful little girl which was gifted generously to her by Anne. It's a celebration of a little life which was cut way to short. The book is full of such beautiful babies, none more so than the Baby Bald Eagle. Buy and enjoy the beauty of children. ... Read more

These images of 'real' men appeal on many levels - aesthetic, intellectual, sexual and emotional. Printed four-color throughout, the photographs are glorious and irresistibly eye-catching. Every style and subject is presented, from the black and white documentary style of Michael von Grattenreid to the beautifully lit, almost pornographic 70s-style photographs of Clifford Baker or the kitsch masterpieces of Gilbert and George; and from Michael McDevitt's boxers and Tom Bianchi's glamour boys to Trish Morrisey's compelling old man. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An Ambitious But Flawed Endeavor
There are some incredibly fine works included in this book by very important artists who have photographed the nude male: for example, Imogene Cunningham, David Hockney, Robert Mapplethorpe, Eadweard Muybridge, Jan Saudek, Arthur Tress, Horst P. Horst, Herbert List, George Hoyningen-Huene, Wilhelm Von Gloeden and Man Ray. (I suppose we should add Andy Warhol to the list although I believe his greatest talent was his indefatigable self-promotion.) There are also photos here by Harriet Leibowitz, Roy Blakey and Tom Bianchi. My three favorites are by Henning Von Berg from his series "Factory Boyz", the beautifully lit photograph of Robert Blanchon by George Mott, and Greg Friedler's "Untitled." But where is the fine work by Bruce Weber, Herb Ritts, Greg Gorman, George Dureau,Thomas Eakins, John Dugdale, Jock Sturgis and Helmut Newton? Yes, both Newton and Sturgis did photograph nude males occasionally; I have seen them. Since this book is called "a celebration of the male nude from 90 of the world's greatest photograhers," certainly the inclusion of any or all of these artists would have given more credibility to the editor's claim. Speaking of credibility, this collection would have more of that if both the editor and writer of the foreward had not been included in this collection. (Certainly the photographs of both Reed Massengill and Phil Braham are good ones-- I'd be happy to own either one of them. I just think this is more chutzpah than is necessary here.) Any collection of this sort that doesn't include a photograph by George Platt Lynes has lost its chance of coming close to being considered a definitive work. Finally, if "beefcake" photographers like Bruce of Los Angeles, Champion, Lon of New York and Bob Mizer are here, then why not include something by Kristen Bjorn? Nobody is better at beefcake than this gentleman.

The photographs of older men with less than perfect bodies add a nice dimension to this book as well as those that show a sense of humor on the part of the photographer. I refer here to "Shoe Ad 1" by Terry Richardson. The photographers are shown in alphabetical order. That seems as good a way to categorize them as any. The biographical sketches are informative. I'm not sure we need Mr. Braham's explanations of what we are seeing, however. There is truth in the old cliche that one picture is worth a thousand words.

2-0 out of 5 stars Most images are disgustiing trash.
Out of 90 images only 35 (5 are very good, other 30 so so)are acceptible for me. The remaining 55 are disgusting.
I respect those fetish. But I don't want to *see* them pissing on bed. Inside the book there even is a pic of an old man (the pic only took his head and breast) standing like a wood staring. It's meaningless and it' so annoying. I can only say that the editor want to prove he is tasteful and thoughtful by choosing so manny (*2/3*) disgusting/ugly photos here. However, it's not my taste and I hate those "thoughtful" critics--those parasites.

5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic
Thank you Phil Braham. Quite possibly the best review of male nude photography/artists in years. Names like Man Ray, Wilhelm Von Gloeden, Andy Warhol, David Hockney, Robert Mapplethorpe and Drew Wojcik speek for it self. The best reference book of top photographers exploring the subject of male nude.

4-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly inspiring...
the book is a compilation of images that will trigger your thought process to continue or conclude the story the photographer started. I'm afraid the story does not end after staring at the images. The images challenges you to visualize my own version of the photograph in our current space and time. Nicely executed and a variety of collectibles in one packed book...

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent addition to any coffee-table or bookshelf.
This sumptuously produced volume exudes quality from the thickness of the dust-jacket, to the high-gloss paper used throughout and of course to the selection of the images used.
The author has put together a selection of photographs, one from each photographer, representing a century of differing styles used to present the male form in photographs. There are some sublimely beautiful images to be seen in this collection, many not seen in books before.

Each plate is accompanied by some details of the photographer, the model and the meaning of each portrayal. In the index at the rear, each photographer is catalogued, and there is a contact e-mail or web address as appropriate. This clearly gives the reader the opportunity to follow-up any artists of particular interest.

A brilliant book to occupy a place of merit on anyone's coffee-table. Be warned, this book is available with a different title in the UK where it is called "Naked Male" ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally!A Nonethnocentric Perspective on African Traditions!
The New York Times Sunday Book Review section today had a wonderful review of this book (2 volumes in a slipcase). The documentation of ritual and people performing rituals as the seasons change in Nature and life cycles turn for People is a sacred task. The photographers appear to have embraced their subjects with care and respect - perhaps others will follow in this way in the future. What strikes me most about the book and the reviews is the genuine approach of the authors to the dignity, honor and respect of the African People they have photographed and documented. This alone makes the book a winner for me.

Regarding the book, I am particularly impressed by their treatment of sacredness without judgment and jaded lens. Indeed the art and form of ritual itself creates tradition. The music of these images is at once visual and alive celebrating the sacred as timeless expressions of culture and community.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE
HOW CAN ANYONE SAY THAT THESE CULTURES DON'T EXIST ANYMORE, OR THIS IS AN AFRICA THAT NO LONGER EXISTS. THEY TOOK THESE PICTURES WITHIN THE LAST 10 YEARS.. DIDN'T THEY ? DUH ? EVERYONE KNOWS THERE IS A COMMON EVERYDAY AFRICA.. GOING TO WORK GENERAL LIVING ( JUST LIKE US HERE IN AMERICA FOLKS) BUT STILL THERE IS AFRICAN TRIBAL SPLENDOR. JUST LIKE IN AMERICA INDIAN'S GET TOGETHER FOR TRIBAL POW WOWS. THEY STILL EXIST TOO. THE PICTURES IN THIS BOOK ARE SHOCKINGLY GORGEOUS...AFRICAN PEOPLE STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL. PLEASE! THE MEN ARE HANDSOME, THE WOMEN WONDEROUS. IT JUST MAKES ME WONDER WHY THE EUROPEAN STANDARD, HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE "STANDARD" OF BEAUTY. THIS REVUE MAY SOUND SHALLOW, BUT IF YOUR INTO THE HUMAN HAS ART FORM ...BUY THIS BOOK!!

4-0 out of 5 stars See it before it disappears
A beautiful look at cultural conventions that may soon be relegated to the quaint and unusual.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Africa that *does* exist, but that is vanishing
The "concise edition" of AFRICAN CEREMONIES opens with a preface by Dr. Malidoma Some, president of "Echoes of the Ancestors" and author of his autobiography OF WATER AND THE SPIRIT and THE HEALING WISDOM OF AFRICA. Malidoma is from the Dagara tribe of Burkina Faso. His name means "make friends with the stranger/enemy," and that is why he now lives in the West.

I have met Malidoma on a few occasions (participating in some of his rituals) and I corresponded with him for a time. He has been incredibly helpful and supportive in my own spiritual journey (he is an initiated shaman of his tribe and has recently become the youngest initiated elder), and therefore I trust what he says. Malidoma's preface makes it clear that, sadly, AFRICAN CEREMONIES documents a world that - unlike the claims of some - is not entirely gone, but that is quickly vanishing. Malidoma comments that these photographs are very important because they show the last time that some of these ceremonies will be performed in such elaborate nature, and perhaps they will never be performed again at all.

AFRICAN CEREMONIES continues the tradition of these well respected photographers by providing a beautiful volume of beautiful peoples.

4-0 out of 5 stars Buy it for what it is
Buyers should understand what this is - a beautiful coffee table book. Beckwith and Fisher present their usual quality of brilliant, sensitive photography. But understand that this is, for the most part, capturing a memory, a fantasy. This Africa no longer exists. Don't buy the book to learn African culture. Buy it if you like photography. As a historical record, it's lacking. One can capture a visual from the outside, but one cannot capture a cultural understanding as readily. ... Read more

First, the look inside on this website is not what is in this book,
but of another edition. The photos are so simplistic and boring.

.....Glamour?.. Def. of Glamour: An air of compelling charm, romance, and excitement, especially when delusively alluring. ........ This book has 95% nude women, many with their legs spread open, or breasts and crotch as the focul point.Photos a
15 year old boy would take and like or for men who see only this aspect of women.

The photos are of poor quality--primarily nude women done likesimple snapshots of your wife with an adequate camera. If the women were clothed you would not think much of these photos. Not artistic or glamourous at all. The technical information is weak.A bunch of photos of breasts, butts and open crotch shots.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Badass
My main fascination with photography recently has been lighting, so before reading this book I decided to read "Lighting for Glamour Photography". I almost wish I had read this one first since it covers glamour lighting in great detail, plus a whole lot of other stuff.

I just finished reading it today, so it's still sinking in, but if you plan on taking beautiful pictures of women and taking it seriously, you pretty much have to read this book. It's a career's worth of experience in an easy to read book.

I've got to say though that some of the 80's style pictures are pretty laughable, especially the 80's sunglasses! Ironically, the author mentions how ludicrous things like sunglasses look when they go out of style!

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent! A must have for any Cary Grant fan.
I received this book as a gift. It serves as an excellent guide to one of the most graceful and wonderful men of Hollywood. The pictures are beautifully arranged and capture the essence of who Mr. Grant was. Even the youngest Cary Grant fan will want to own this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Top-notch photo biography.
Indeed, this book is one meant to be displayed. I was immediately struck by the slick, high-quality paper used to enhance the many, many photos of the dashing Cary Grant. Ms. Curtis leads us through Grant's life with comprehensive, yet concise captions beneath each photo. The dignity and charm in her writing reflect the beloved characteristics that personified Cary Grant.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for all Cary Grant fans.
If you like Cary Grant, you'll love this book. The photos are among the best I've seen. Jenny does a great job of summarizing Cary's life, sticking to the facts and leaving out the controversial rumors . I find my self constantly picking up this book just to gaze at the photos. Book Description

An intimate friendship of more than three decades is chronicled here, along with the aesthetic evolution of two major American artists. R.B. Kitaj's unusual, handsome, troubled, charismatic face has been a rich subject for Lee Friedlander's camera since the two artists became friends in 1970, when both were teaching at the University of California, Los Angeles. "Kitaj" begins and ends with photographs shot in Los Angeles, and the artist's passage from raw and vigorous young man to grizzly, white-haired prophet is charted through more than 90 images. A frank and moving series of images from 1994, focused on Kitaj during the days following his wife Sandra's sudden and unexpected death, achieve a disarming intimacy that could only have been the result of a deep and trusting friendship. "Kitaj" includes a reminiscence by Kitaj himself as well as an introduction by Friedlander's wife, Maria. A great photograph is like a great translation, which gives you a little something of a more gorgeous original. It's a short-lived illusion glancing my day. That's why we place photos of loved ones around the house. They escape the tomb, don't they? We read and reread them into a spectral life. --R.B. KitajI can sympathize with Kitaj that at times he would wish to look better in a certain photo, to be rendered differently... But there we are, both Kitaj and myself, I for more than forty years and Kitaj for over thirty, accepting ourselves as subjects for a photographer we trust. --Maria Friedlander

Book Description

Now in it's second printing, Fuck You Heroes is photographer Glen E. Friedman's uncompromising look at the radicals of youth culture in the extreme worlds of skateboarding, punk and rap. From day one behind his camera, Friedman has had an unerring ability to be in the right place ahead of everybody else. He was a teenaged photographer for 'Thrasher' and 'Skateboarder' magazines, he created the seminal one-hit punk fanzine 'My Rules', worked with Black Flag and Suicidal Tendencies in their early days, wrote for Maximum Rock & Roll, did street promotion for Def Jam's west coast office and shot sleeve photos for everyone from Minor Threat to Public Enemy. This book presents the photographic distillation of Glen's ethic: it's about the perfect shots of the people who live by the touchstones of intensity and integrity. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Glen Freidman Rules!
Many photos that you may have seen, but never knew who took them. This guy has taken some of the most famous photos in the history of skateboarding and punk rock. The pics of Black Flag(Rollins w/ the mic in his mouth), and (Chuck D in prison are killer!) The hardcores will know what I'm talking about. Freidman Rules! Also, check out his Z - Boys book. It's great.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an Essential work!!!
I don't own this book myself, however I have seen it and I do own the second issue "*&^% you too". This is an essential work for anyone that grew up on punk rock, skateboarding, and in general displays a counter culture attitude that just says what else "&*^% you". Glen's eye catches that exact moment in time that completely makes you wish you were there. How many times can I look through for the most intense punk photos from Black Flag one of the sickest and most aggresive bands ever. This book also contains some old and classic skateboarding photography when the movement was just a baby. Glen also did a lot of work for early underground rap artist's and has shot many album covers that you will most likely recognize. Just get it for the Black Flag photos by itself.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is an all time Classic.
This book is a classic. All it's claims are true. The most incredible pictures of the most incredible original dogtown skateboarders, the most radical hardcore punks in the heyday of hardcore, and the greatest hip hop artists of all time. All photographed with respect and integrity with a style like no one else, and everyone else can only aspire to and be inspired by.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice photography book that covers many genres
This is a good book. Too bad Glen used a smaller format for the "dog town" book. I like the bigger photos in this 'un. But why are there no pics of Jeffrey Lee Pierce?

Don't forget to pick up volume two of this work - for even more great photos (but alas, still no pics of Jeffrey Lee Pierce).

Two thumbs up!

5-0 out of 5 stars Dog Town, Hard-core Punk, Hip-Hop, essential classic!
I can't believe that I had not heard of or seen this book until now. It took the "Dog town and the Legend of the Z-boys" book Friedman and Stecyk did to turn me onto this one. The Dogtown book is really great, but this book is ... awesome! Who could believe that Friedman after his Dogtown days went on to shoot as many other hard-core "heroes" as he did. It's all in here, and all classic; From Tony Alva and Jay Adams to Black Flag, Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Dead Kennedy's, the Germs, and Fugazi; to L.L. Cool J, Run-DMC, Public Enemy, Beastie Boys, Eric B. & Rakim, Ice T, and many more in their prime. It's just awesome. All the shots are amazing classics; to capture them all in one book is really something. Something really worth owning. (The in-depth caption index gives you information on the subjects, their views at the time, and Friedman's perspective too.) This book proves that without a doubt Friedman has got to be one the most important photographers of his generation!

The only slight disappointment I had with the Dog town book was that some of the most classic important photos in the Dog town film were not included in that book. But guess what? They are in this one! Tony Alva classic 1st frontside air at the Dog bowl, Jay Adams knocking up the coping, Alva flipping the bird, and probably all of the most classic Friedman Dogtown shots are here in "FUCK YOU HEROES." this one is a must, without a doubt.

Highly Recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Photo Tribute to Rita Hayworth!
I have collected all the books ever written about Rita Hayworth. I have to say that this is the BEST photobook I have seen to date. Who else but a Rita Hayworth fan can put their heart in such a big project and create such a lovely photo tribute to Hollywood's most glamourous movie star of the classic era. Not only is there a collection of rare photographs, but there is lots of interesting information on Rita's life, trivia and more. If you're a fan of Rita Hayworth, then this is the book you must buy! Simply beautifully done!

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book!
Caren Roberts-Frenzel is a great person and a huge Rita Hayworth fan! I have been subscribing to her Rita Hayworth fan club newsletter for several years now, and I am so happy that this project, a long time dream of hers, came to fruition.

Most so-called biographies of movie stars are written by people that don't really appreciate the subject of their work; it is so refreshing to read a biography written by a true fan.

But this book is really about the photos, and Caren has collected an amazing collection, so many that even I, another long-time Rita fan, has never seen.

The short of this? If you are a Rita Hayworth fan, BUY THIS BOOK!

5-0 out of 5 stars Rita Hayworth: A Photographic TREASURE!!!
Rita Hayworth is one of the most beautiful and glamourous women ever to have lived. Though her life was marked by tragedy, particularly her Alzheimer's affliction and death at a relatively young age. This book, however, is mainly devoted to celebrating Rita's happier times. Her life is viewed chronologically in both popular and rare photographs. There are so many beautiful photos that it is difficult to take in all at once! My favorite pictures (and just a sampling of the pictures you will find in this book) are: Rita (when she was still Margarita) with her dark hair dancing in a beautiful ruffled dress (p.28), glamourous Rita smiling brightly while reclining on a couch (p.87), Rita clowning with Orson Welles (pg. 114), Rita getting her hair touched up (p. 119), Rita tickling her daughter Rebecca (p. 126), Rita walking solitarily on the beach (p. 140), Rita being welcomed home (p. 165), and Rita in 1981, in declining mental health, but still looking every inch a movie star. If you love Rita and her movies, do not hesitate to buy this book!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Va-Va-Va VOOM! Hubba-hubba! Wowzer-wowzer! Bong!
"Rita Hayworth: A Photographic Retrospective" features a zillion photographs, many never before published, of one of Hollywood's most enduring sexual icons.

The book was a labor of love for author, historian and collector Caren Roberts-Frenzel of Minneapolis, who reportedly kept pestering publishers for years to get their attention.

"But you're wrong, Rita has not been forgotten," was her mantra, as skeptical publishers elsewhere wondered aloud if a market remained for a book about one of the great beauties of the 1940s.

Caren's persistence finally paid off, resulting in one of the most luxurious "picture on every page" books ever produced, supplemented by breezy, well-written and information-packed text.

Unlike "been there, done that" books about Hayworth, this one specializes in numerous "candids," that is, unposed photos taken outside of the studio, at work, at play, on the set, whatever.

For once, here's a volume that doesn't feature the same darn publicity photos you've seen a million times for sale on the Internet or at flea markets.

The deal about Rita is man oh man, unlike sexy sirens named Grable or even Monroe, Hayworth's beauty is timeless and undated. Unless someone told you, you'd never know, for example, that her world famous pinup shot -- taken on the bed by Life Magazine photographer Bob Landry -- was shot more than 60 years ago!

The same holds true for the nearly 300 other photos that grace this book, some recaptured in all of their Technicolor glory.

Get "Rita Hayworth: A Photographic Retrospective," before it disappears! I understand only a few thousand were printed and yet the reviews in the papers and in places like People Magazine have been terrific.

5-0 out of 5 stars I fell in love with Rita all over again!
Caren Roberts-Frenzel is the president of the Rita Hayworth Fan Club and this book is her dream project come to life. Caren's appreciation of every facet of The Love Goddess is evident on every page. It was so good to see someone who knows and cares about Rita create such a labor of love. Caren doesn't whitewash the blemishes in Rita's often tragic life but rather allows them to complete an honest and ultimately loving portrait of this gentle woman.

Like its subject, this book is breathtaking in its beauty. It contains scores of genuinely rare photos and they are a treasure. I own many books on Rita but "A Photographic Retrospective" is easily my favorite. ... Read more

Studying the individual faces and personal essays of these 75peacemakers we discover a simple truth: making peace is an act of courage. Putthem all together in a volume as elegant as this one and a higher truth emerges: making peace is the world's next spiritual calling. PhotographerMichael Collopy did an excellent job of bringing forth each of his subject'sintegrity, grit, and humanity. In the clear and gentle eyes of Vietnam veteranand author Ron Kovic we see the healing that it took to transcend the wounds ofthe battlefield and write Born on the Fourth of July. Maried CorriganMaguire lost two nephews and a niece in an IRA and British car chase. Soonafter, Maguire's grief-stricken sister committed suicide. As a result shefounded Peace People, an organization to end sectarian violence. In her strongjaw and sad eyes we see every woman who has ever turned grief into activism.

Many of the faces are familiar ones--Carlos Santana, Cezar Chavez, Thich NhatHanh, Dr. Maya Angelou, Coretta Scott King. Yet there are numerous quiet heroesas well. The personal essays are mostly brief (one page) but offer compellingreasons why we all should give peace a chance. --Gail Hudson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fine repersentation of images and tributes to peace
In Architects Of Peace, photographer Michael Collopy set out to document the visions of over seventy of the world's great peacemakers - spiritual leaders, politicians, and artists alike. Architects Of Peace blends art and insights alike in a volume which blends his tritone photos of these people with essays reflecting their beliefs. From Jean-Michael Cousteau and Elie Wiesel to Joan Baez and others, this makes for a fine repersentation of images and tributes to peace.

1-0 out of 5 stars Is this a joke?
While it's great that so many people have been able to focus on those several truly extraordinary people mentioned in this book, the fact that Margaret Thatcher is listed as an 'architect of peace' is like saying Stalin just wanted civil rights for everybody. This is the same woman who turned her back on the vast majority of Britons and was the embodiment of Reaganite self-centeredness. How many people are unaware of her response when asked about rising heating costs for the elderly in Britain: "They have hats, don't they?". Are we to believe she belongs in the same book as Mother Theresa??! What insanity! Her inclusion not only casts credibility on the authors, but undermines the genuine acts of peace that are enacted daily by the extraordinary presences of teachers like Thich Nhat Hanh and others.

There is much good in this book, but to equate some of the most advanced spiritual practitioners with the likes of Thatcher and several movie stars is grossly arrogant, and smacks of only wanting to hob-nob with the rich and famous.

Follow the advice of the lovely comments below and read their recommendations. Just don't buy this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Two men important in my personal journey are profiled
Cesar Chavez (pictured on the lower right hand cover of this book) and Arun Gandhi are two men who have been very important in my spiritual journey through life, and both are featured in this book.

Arun Gandhi is the Grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, and Arun now heads the "M. K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence" in Memphis, TN. I had the honor of meeting Arun Gandhi at a retreat several years back, and he has remained an important part of my life ever since; he has helped me better understand the world and better understand my life and the people involved in my life, and he has taught me that being "peaceful" and non-violent truly entails more than just refusing to fight and feeling good about onself.

As a little boy, from age four to age six, I lived with my family at "Colegio Cesar Chavez" in Mt. Angel, Oregon. Colegio Cesar Chavez was a "college without walls" program and in its day (1973-1983) it was the only "chicano" four-year college in the nation. It had correspondence students from as far away as New York and Canada. Cesar Chavez paid two visits to the campus, and I became quite emotional when my mother recently informed me that I had had the honor to actually meet him during one of the visits (of course, I was too young at the time to have known who I was meeting). So, Arun Gandhi and Cesar Chavez have been important in my life, they are both featured in this book, and they are both Gandhian. I can't help but feel that this book was made for me personally (I mean that "rhetorically," of course), since it creates something of a "continuum" in my personal journey, added to the fact that I was born on the Mahatma's birthday.

Another man who has been important in my journey is also profiled in this book: Thich Nhat Hahn. He is a Zen monk who was nominated by Martin Luther King Jr. for a Nobel Prize. His books, such as PEACE IS EVERY STEP, are beautifully written and have had a huge impact on my life. His works have helped me see deeper into the world around me.

As for the layout of the book itself, it is beautiful. The photographs are crisp and clear and honest, and the text is inspiring. I confess that there is one specific person profiled in this book that I feel may not truly have deserved to be in this company as I feel his persona has been constructed with personal glorification as its main goal, but who am I to ultimately make such a judgment? We find inspiration where we need to, and I'm sure this specific individual has inspired many people.

Further books that may interest the reader of this book are:

THE FORGOTTEN WOMAN by Arun Gandhi; this is about Kasturba Gandhi, wife of the Mahatma.

COLEGIO CESAR CHAVEZ by Carlos Maldonado; this book is about the college named for Cesar Chavez, the one I lived at as a child.

NOSOTROS: THE HISPANIC PEOPLE OF OREGON by the Oregon Counsel for the Humanities; this book profiles the Hispanic population of Oregon and highlights Cesar Chavez's impact on them (a section devoted to "Colegio Cesar Chavez" is included, with a picture of Cesar Chavez visiting the campus).

PEACE IS EVERY STEP by Thich Nhat Hanh; in my opinion, this is his definitive work on spiritual insight and inner peace.

5-0 out of 5 stars Timely
This book is brilliant. I have bought several copies, all before September 11 and now, more than ever, it's message is so important. This is a pivotal time in history and this book could be a bible for the times. If they can do it, we can. Michael Collopy is an Architect of Peace of the highest order himself. He is a beautiful photographer and an inspired visionary. I highly recommend this book for absolutely EVERYONE on your holiday shopping list.

5-0 out of 5 stars A magnificent tribute and inspiring anthology
I bought this as a gift last year, and keep buying more. This beautiful anthology in photos (b&w) of the world's great peacemakers along with thier own moving thoughts and reflections is a masterpiece of photography and words, but much more. To see these great people and hear their visions is insightful, thought provoking, stunning, moving, and inspiring.
With the recent events of September 2001, it is even more poignant.
A must see to appreciate. It is the kind of book you will cherish and share. A great gift for educators, healers, leaders, young people, baby boomers, and everyone in between who thinks, and all who desire a better humanity. But one word of caution, if you buy it as a gift, get two- you are likely to keep one for yourself.
A truly memorable tribute to the ability of single individuals from diverse backgrounds to make a difference...to unite with strength of purpose and vision in the goal of a more peaceful world. ... Read more

Book Description

Presented in an identical format to Phaidon’s previous Fruits, published in 2001, Fruits Too is a collection of Tokyo teenage street fashion portraits selected from Japan’s premier street fanzine of the same title. Published every month by Shoichi Aoki, who is also the sole photographer for the magazine, Fruits was established in 1994 as a project to document the growing explosion in street fashion within the suburbs of Tokyo. Over the last decade the magazine has grown to cult status and is now avidly followed by thousands of Japanese teenagers who also use the magazine as an opportunity to check out the latest styles and trends. The average age of those kids featured in the magazine is between 12 and 18 years old. Most of the clothes that they wear are a combination of high fashion – Vivienne Westwood is a keen favourite – and homemade ensembles which when combined together create a novel if not hysterical combination. This latest publication of the best of Fruits will follow the original Phaidon publication by including translations of the various Japanese captions that were originally attached to the photographs that list the name, age and clothing of each person photographed. ... Photographs from movie sets have always been packed with the curious itch of glamour. Pictures, actor Jeff Bridges's book of photographs, is no exception, and it starts with a special camera. Bridges has been taking on-set photos since the 1980s with a Widelux, an oddity without a shutter or viewfinder. The camera's moving slit makes for panoramic images (about the same aspect as a widescreen film) and even allows quick moving subjects to appear twice on the same negative. Hence these photos are not always crystal clear but nevertheless capture magic, a verisimilitude of being on the inside of the movie-making process. The wide field can show an actor and director foreground while the crew spins their own story in another part of the print--multiple stories written in light. Bridges often catches his fellow actors with an amusing twinkle in their eye whether preparing for scene or appearing twice in the same shot mirroring the comedy/tragedy masks. Bridges adds reminisces about the photos including a very funny off-color story from The Big Lebowski set.

In the past, Bridges would give out self-published collections of his photographs to cast and crew as gifts at the end of a shoot. One might have spied these images in promotional items or magazines, but with Pictures, now fans of the movies can have their own wonderful keepsake. --Doug Thomas ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just another celebrity photo book!
I'm a photographer and a couple of years ago I saw Jeff Bridges on some entertainment show and he was talking about photo books that he would make as gifts for cast and crew members on films that he worked on, and how he used special Widelux cameras. The Widelux models that Jeff uses are no longer made, which is a shame, because it was one of the very few panorama cameras that used 35mm film. (The bigger Widelux model which uses 120 and 220 film is still made, but it's much larger and heavier than the 35mm model.) After seeing the interview with Jeff I went out and bought one (I now own 3) and it's one of my favorite cameras to work with, and that's why I was so excited when I learned of Jeff's book.

This is a great book by a photographer with a good eye in an interesting format. The pictures are beautiful and the subjects interesting. The Widelux is not an easy camera to work with and I can appreciate the effort that went into making these pictures. There are a plethora of photo books from the famous that are published simply because the shooter is famous. Jeff Bridges is a photographer and this is a refreshing, interesting book.

And though the Widelux F series has been discontinued, you can still find them on eBay and at used camera stores.

5-0 out of 5 stars Neat book dude!
I'm sure the fact that Jeff Bridges starred in 2 of my all time favorite films; The Last Picture Show and The Big Lebowski, doesn't have much to do with my high recommendation for this book. For it is a great book in it's own right.

I'm a bit of a sucker for photography books, especially ones with black and white photos, and needless to say, I've bought more than my fair share. Some I have regretted buying, having only looked at them once or twice. Pictures by Jeff Bridges is one of the few books I don't regret spending money on. In fact, my purchase was totally guilt-free because Jeff Bridges is donating all the proceeds to a non profit organization.

But maybe I like this book so much because I am a photographer myself and have worked in feature film production. In fact, one of the companies I have worked for did the special effects for Starman.

That aside, Jeff Bridges offers a unique window of opportunity to gain a glimpse of what it's like on movie sets, from the point of view of one of the members of the cast. Stars like Penelope Cruz, Michelle Pfieffer and Gary Busey are featured. Although members of the production crew are also featured, I wish they would be featured even more (as a member of 'the crew' myself, I often feel like our contributions are overshadowed by the celebrities).

Jeff Bridges' special perspective is not only represented in the subject matter of the photos, but also in the panoramic format. There is something cinematic about these wide shots and the format suits the subject matter of moviemaking wonderfully. Further, Bridges has some stories and hand written notes throughout the book, a very nice touch, entertaining and appreciated.

The book is nearly 200 pages, seems sturdy and is put together quite well. Whether you are a fan of Jeff Bridges, filmmaking, black and white, panoramic photography, or all of the above, this is a comprehensive book you won't regret buying. Heck, I've bought photo books that cost way more yet only include a handful of photos. Pictures by Jeff Bridges is definitely a book in which you get your money's worth.

5-0 out of 5 stars On the set
If you've ever fanaticized about being present on a movie set, this book will come as close as it gets to satisfying the fantasy. Book Description

The collection "Sex & Landscapes" brings together a rich selection from Helmut Newton’s little-known landscape and travel photographs, as well as unseen "tougher" sex pictures, described by Philippe Garner of de Pury & Luxembourg as "Helmut’s world of dark, brooding seas, baroque statuary, crashing waves, a long desert highway under threatening skies, a Berlin park at dusk, enigmatic apartment buildings at night, the Rhine seen from the air, the shadows of airplanes, all this interwoven with hard and voyeuristic sexual imagery, plus a touch of his high style and glamour." Book Description

Fruits Postcards is a collection of forty-five Tokyo street fashion portraits from Japan's premier fanzine of the same name. 'Fruits' was established in 1994, by photographer Shoichi Aoki, initially as a project to document the growing explosion in street fashion within the suburbs of Tokyo. The average age of kids featured in the magazine is between 12 and 18, and the clothes that they wear are a mixture of high fashion - Vivianne Westwood is a keen favourite - and home-made ensembles which when combined create a novel, if not hysterical, effect.

This collection of postcards represents a unique documentation of the changing face of street fashion throughout the last decade. Colourful, fascinating and funny, these cult images will delight followers of fashion and youth culture. ... Read more
