5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful!
This is a great how-to book. Lots of excellent information. As a working photographer I found it to be very informative. Nice babes too!

2-0 out of 5 stars Brief Overview
This one is a little thin on content. Gives about a paragraph on every topic, but no detail on anything. You'd be better off buying a 2-3 books that give more detail on different topics like lighting, business, models, etc. Though a bit dated, John Kelly's "Successful Glamour Photography" is more useful and cheaper. "Part-Time Glamour Photography : Full-Time Income" is also a better buy. The photos are good, but the same handful of models are used throughout - no variety. As if they went out and shot the whole thing in a weekend and threw together some text. Get this only if you want a synopsis, but you could finish it in 10 minutes at the rack.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Stuff
Interesting concept! I like the ideas and the photos, not to mention the beautiful models. I would have rated it 5 stars, but the swimsuits are too conservative. ... Read more

Book Description

Covers many famous photojournalists but each coverage is very light and the details are not interesting enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars I need a new copy
This will be the second time I'm buying this book. I've lent it out to one of my staff and somewhere down the line it's disappeared. I think that's says a lot about this book. It's nice to have around to read through on a Saturday morning with a mug of coffee or flip through for inspiration.

It has definitely helped not only the way I see the world, but with my own photography.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exploring the views/mindsets of prominent photojournalists
This is a great book. If you are at all interested in documentary photography/photojournalism, then you will not be able to put this book down!

It is jam-packed with a collection of personal essays by the worlds most prominent documentary photographers. They speak about why and how they do what they do, their path in life and their experiences seeing the world up close and personal.

The book has at least one black and white image example per photographer, but it's not a coffee table photography book. It's a relatively small size and can be carried with you in a bag quite easily.

I'm going to go back and read this book again. It is full of reasonings and inspirations and as a published photographer, it makes me want to grab my Leica and hit the streets with some black and white film...

5-0 out of 5 stars A Unique and Valuable Resource
Witness in Our Time gives readers a rare glimpse into the minds of some of the most talented contemporary documentary photographer. Editor Ken Light offers a valuable resource to any professional or student photographer, or anyone with an interest in documentary photography. Witness in Our Time provides personal accounts by photographers such as Sebastião Salgado, Mary Ellen Mark and Eugene Richards of how each has made it in the challenging field of documentary photography. Witness in Our Time offers an inspirational and sometimes sobering view of the past, present and future of this important field. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of a kind
The title of Michael Sedge's book says "Guide to Global Markets," and about 60% of the book is dedicated to rather extensive listings of magazine, newspaper and book publishing houses from such diverse markets as Fair Lady in Capetown, South Africa and Modern Boating in Australia. Yet the key to this 275-page guide is a concept that has made, or broken, many freelance writers' careers - reselling.

Sedge makes suggestions that I still have trouble with, mostly things that reflect his many years at the work, and his level of success. He says to send originals or color copies of clips rather than B&W copies - an expensive proposal for a struggling freelancer. He says it is always best to query rather than send complete articles, while many other equally successful writers have said just the opposite is true.

And then there is what he calls "The Return Envelope Illusion."

His attitude is this: if they're interested, they call you. Sedge says, "Because I consider myself a business dealing with another business, I stopped sending SASEs fifteen years ago." He sends out queries, either email or regular mail, and waits. If 90 days go by without a reply, he sends the idea to someone else. And judging by his success rate, it may very well work. But I have yet to try it.

But regardless of your own success rate, "Global Markets" is an education in the business of freelancing, and well worth the effort to find it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is an indispensable tool for serious creators.
"You should alter your business style to fit your personality." With this innovative admonition, in fewer than 300 pages, Michael Sedge launches his writer- and photographer- friendly guide to international publishing. It's a small book, easily tucked into carry-on luggage for a quick and valuable read when travelling, and teeming with more essential information than its size suggests.

To those of us who juggle queries, IRC's, and rejection slips, ad infinitum, Sedge's book presents a path that leads without effort to the production and marketing of one's work, successfully, and over and over again.

We discover the benefits of circling the global marketplace on the World Wide Web and of expediting the query process electronically, thereby diminishing the need for IRC's. Sedge uses the concept of lists extensively, not only to ease the proposal process, but also to provide detailed and direct routes to publishers around the world, their various imprints and contact persons, as well as the e-dresses for most of them.

The book tackles the maze of multiple submissions to the advantage of writer and photographer. It provides a clear understanding of the pros and cons of allowing agencies to handle international marketing.

By far, the most important and unique feature of the book is Sedge's fail-safe method for assuring that writer and photographer keep a tight hold of the rights they want to keep. This feature, alone, mandates the book's place on any creator's bookshelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a must own book for freelancers
If you are interested in increasing your writing income - and who's not - then this book must be in your marketing reference library.

It tells you how and where you can share in the money you're missing by not selling to the overseas markets.

The information is new and current and not just a rehash of the old information you've long been accustomed to - buy it and increase your sales.

Book Description

In 1963, the Pirelli tire company created a calendar featuring pin-up models as a promotional piece. Each year since, the company has called upon the photographer of the moment to portray "the beauty of the world" through images. For over thirty-five years, the calendar has been the talk of Italy and Europe because it is available only to a privileged list of corporate customers and VIPs, giving it an air of exclusivity and contributing to its success. In addition, the subtlety of the images and the quality and creativity of its photographers have established the calendar as a paradigm of its genre and a coveted collector's item.

Never before have these images been published in such an affordable and accessible format, or been available to such a wide audience. This book contains the full calendar for all of the years through 2001. The years 1999 and 2001 have never been published in their entirety before, and the 2001 edition is by Mario Testino, one of the most celebrated fashion photographers of today. Past photographers include Norman Parkinson, Bert Stern, Joyce Tenneson, Arthur Elgort, Herb Ritts, Richard Avedon, Bruce Weber, and Annie Leibovitz. The book is a must for fashion aficionados, photography buffs, and advertising and design professionals.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Technical Primer
If you're interested in architectural photography as a profession, you will probably gain some valuable insights from this book. While few of the photographic examples used are what I would call "stunning", the author provides a very methodical and thorough approach to learning the craft. And while certainly not a how-to book for inexperienced photographers, Harris has done a good job of defining the issues and explaining the technical solutions that are inherent to architectural photography.

Everything of importance is explained, from film selection and filtering, to complex exposure formulas and specialized equipment.

A warning though: if you don't have a basic understanding of Geometry, you might have trouble applying some of the concepts in this book (and thus trouble producing attractive architectural photographs). More than any other genre of photography, architectural photography is a thinking man (and woman's) game. You don't "seek out" or "sense" a beautiful photograph so much as carefully manufacture them.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must-read" book for aspiring architectural photographers!
Professional Architectural Photography by Michael Harris is a wonderfully informative and beautifully illustrated "must-read" book for any photographer who desires to shoot the interiors and exteriors of buildings. The book is easy to read, concise and to the point, and offers a wealth of information detailing with the art and science of architectural photography. As a professional photographer and photography instructor, I had always desired to try my hand, so to speak, at capturing on film the architectural beauty of historically significant buildings. After reading this book, I can't wait to go out and shoot my own architectural photographs. In fact, I was so motivated by the way the author presented the information contained in the book that I went out a couple weeks later and bought a 4" x 5" large-format view Camera. Trust me! If you think you'd like to dabble in architectural photography, invest in this book. You'll be glad you did! Even if you're not a photographer, but you like viewing photographic images in home remodeling or architectural magazines, this book will teach you much about (and give you a better appreciation for) architectural photography. Who knows? It may even launch you into a new career. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Too general for a starter like me
It's a good read but one might not get much out of the whole book. With a little research on the internet, this book renders useless; besides, the advices are very dated. Try E R Lilley's book better.

1-0 out of 5 stars don't bother
This book has little in specifics for a photography business. It does have lots of basic common sense advice about home businesses in general. For example, he tells you to check in the yellow pages to see who your competition will be. Also, you can get some of his information for free, such as the tax regulations from the IRS.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for what it is
If you already know a lot about management and/or business in general, don't bother. Little specific to photography is in here. I am a majager and have a degree from ASU's business college, so this wasn't all that helpful. If your background isn't like mine, or you need a refresher though, this may be an excellent title for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well Organized & Written
This book is well organized and written. It was a quick read and he covered everything in simple terms that even the budding pro could follow. My only complaint is that he spent a lot of time detailing bookkeeping & resource systems that are all done by hand and there was little advice on computer assistance. Also, he focused mostly on freelance stock photography (which is what most home-based photographers would be doing) but more info on studio work would have been helpful for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Photography Business Guide
In my opinion, being a photographer is easy but being a professional business photographer is difficult because I don't have enough experience in this type of field. But after reading this book, a lot of questions that I had in mind have been answered clearly and concisely. The book is packed with information that I need to know for setting up a photography business at home. The topics about Business Planning, Financial Management, Legal Aspects, Taxes, Business Development, Marketing and Promotion, etc. are very informative. This book is recommendable to all beginners and professionals in business photography. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The book to read before starting a photography business.
Ann Monteith clearly sets out the various issues related to establishing a wedding photography business, whether it be a fully equiped full-time studio business or a weekend, on-location service. She explains the types of business structures (sole proprietorships, partnerships, corporations, etc.) and their advantages and disadvantages for the wedding photographer. She also devotes whole chapters to the following subjects: -Marketing objectives -Business Location -Product (album) design and presentation -Pricing services and products, and more!

The second half of this book contains profiles of currently established wedding photographers who explain their business strategies and photographic styles. These profiles include examples of the photographers' works - collections of wedding photographs which are a joy to browse through and which lend ideas to the aspiring wedding photographer or established professional.

5-0 out of 5 stars A cornucopia of useful information
The book is well outlined and hits on every detail necessary to operate a successfull wedding photography business. Monteith also adds profiles of some of the world's best wedding photographers who give their take on the world of wedding photography. Great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a non-biased book about the biz side of wed photos!
At first I thought this book would be another "this is how I did it, just copy me" publication that is so common in the photography industry. In contrast, though, Monteith has taken a fresh approach by describing the various options available for all your business decisions. It covers all the major ideas used by photographers today (both full-time and part-time), and lets you decide how you want to run your business. Great for new photographers and veterans. I wish this book was available when I started my photography business--it would have saved me a lot of headaches and research.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for wedding photographers at all levels.
In the first section of the book Ann Monteith gives the nuts and bolts for putting together a wedding photography buisness. The second section features 30 Top International Wedding Photographers. I was honored to be included by Ann. Photographs and inner thoughts are shared from the chosen photographers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's Just What the Title Says!
This book is a very useful and informative. It does a very good job of covering what makes professional interior photography work. Definitely a book for advanced amateurs or professionals. Would be great for a professional who is expanding their scope of work to include interior photography or who is looking for techniques or useful ideas. Harris does a very good job of describing appropriate camera and lighting equipment, lighting techniques, color correction processes, etc. The book is pretty much up-to-date and covers digital photography reasonably well. It is a very "hands-on" book from someone who obviously knows what they are doing. I probably would not recommend this to "snapshot" photographers, you might not get too much out of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book!
Michael Harries does a great job on this book. In this book he recommends the view camera (instead of the typical 35mm). This book isn't really going to teach all aspects of how to use this camera or the equipment. However, there is pretty good coverage concerning lights and how to correct color with filters. He also gives a really good run down on what equipment to buy, composition, and different types of film.

If you want to learn a lot about architectural photography and its equipment, this is a really good book. If you want lots of specifics on view cameras, you'll need a different book. ... Read more
