5-0 out of 5 stars Well written photography book...
I'm considering turning a hobby into a career, and so don't know how professional photographers would rate this book. I thought it was very informative and readable, and especially liked the numerous references and addresses for getting additional information on a particular topic. Chapters include careers in photojournalism, advertising, freelance, travel, government, and medical photography. The book also discusses digital photography, the internet, and the fact that current technology is changing how photographers do their jobs. ... Read more

Book Description

In this important book, Antonio Negri develops the key ideas that were to form the basis for the highly influential analyses of new forms of power and social struggle presented in Empire and Multitude. He shows how new technology and the break-up of the traditional factory have created new social subjects whose value is no longer tied to their skill. The spread of communication networks and the globalization of production mean that capitalism has become totalized - but not, Negri stresses, monolithic. On the contrary, the possibilities for subversion have correspondingly increased.

Going beyond classical Marxism, he shows how old solidarities must be reformulated and new alliances created. The struggles which marked the political end of the twentieth century are now being repeated in a new historical conjuncture, giving rise to new forms of transnational solidarity that can challenge dominant global powers.

This new paperback edition, which includes a new Preface by the author, is an excellent introduction to the work of one of the most influential political thinkers writing today and will be essential reading for anyone who wishes to understand the new forms of conflict and struggle that will shape the world in the twenty-first century. ... Book Description

Erwin Olaf, one of the best know and most over-the-top Dutch photographers of today--think David LaChapelle crossed with Playboy)--lives a passionate, lusty affair with life, enjoying it to the fullest extent, a true gastronome of the art of living. His oeuvre stands as a manifestation of this very passion and of his very genuine engagement with his subjects. Over the last 25 years, he has evolved from a photographer who captures reality to a director who creates it; either way, the depicted reality is one filled with humor, imagination, sexuality, and exuberance, raising issues of freedom, beauty, loneliness, and difference. A master who can generate his own, perverse world through autonomous photographic series, grandiose parties, and film projects alike, he is also hypercritical, an artist from whom nothing escapes. Thus his fictions are convincing, his images full of bygone days, fairytales, and dreams, populated by historical figures, elves, dwarves, lunatics, and creatures that defy easy description.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Sumptuous Feast For The Eyes
A roof over our head is a need just as the air that we breathe, the food that we consume, & the water that we drink. As human gradually evolves & that our mind is getting more complex, a house doesn't serve the need simply but it also has become a form of expression, a display of the occupants' personality &/or their wealth, bringing into fruition an ideal or an -ism, &/or a culmination of both. Irrespective of which countries we're going to, & what cultures we immerse ourselves into, we still need a house to go home to. And the "House Book" delves into the residential end of architecture scale by showing us all range of houses that transcend boundaries, dollar value, time. I view this book as a collage of 500 houses. I wish certain iconic houses could be discussed further with provision of additional pictures but what we are provided with are simply pictures taken from the most potent angles, which supposedly do the most justice to the houses. Having said that, I would opt the strengths & weaknesses are exposed & they are to be judged by their own merits but then, the size of the book would have been increased quite significantly & so does the cost of owning the book. Still, this is an exceptional book with high grade quality pictures, good summary, good end notes for us to delve into a particular style, particular countries. At the end of the book, there is also an index of further information regarding houses that are available for public viewing. Overall, a very well-done book & it is featured permanently & prominently on my coffee table. Highly recommended

5-0 out of 5 stars Really fun to look through
A great collection of 500 houses, from huts in thirdworld countries, to historic castles and palaces and estates and chateaus, to modern architecture, done by 500 architects. This is a visuals-only book. It does not have much information about the buildings or the architects, but it makes up for the lack of text with the large, vibrant photos, which is what the book is all about. This book is a trade-off - it has more homes and architects than any other book out there, but it also has very little information, since with 500 architects, that only leaves one per page.

Fun to look through and mentally design the dream estate of my retirement years...and to learn about a lot of architects I'd never heard of.

5-0 out of 5 stars Steal of the century
Why ....O....Why is this book so cheap???!!??? It's so wonderfully done. Each designer gets exactly one page (even Frank Lloyd Wright). One beautiful photograph(and thank [goodness] not too many words), then on to the next,500 in all; an incredibly diverse view of the different ways that "Home" is accomplished, with suggestions in fine print of other entries that might interest you if you like this one. Every book I've ever bought even close to this quality really hurt me at the checkout counter....but this one is [PRICE]..!!?? Perhaps it's the ugly cover photograph of bricks. Who knows, but inside is one of the most incredible and inspiring collections of images I've seen in a long time...kind of like "Shelter" without the excess verbage. Years ago, my sister cut thousands of small photographs out of years of National Geographic and laminated them into an incredible montage that covered the entire wall surface that separated the kitchen from the dining room. Colors, textures and images provided us with endless amusement. I'm ordering 2 extra copies of this book to chop up. No [kidding], I'm not associated with this book in any way, I'm just an economy minded Architect that can spot an incredible buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars The House Book
If you liked The Art Book you'll love The House Book. An alphabetical listing of the most important 500 houses from all time. This concise visual history of icons covers everything from ancient cave dwellings to the latest in architectural wonders. Everyone one is there - Gehry, Aalto, Eames, Thomas Jefferson, Henry VIII, Palladio.
Beautifully photographed and printed, I ordered 10 copies of this coffee table book for holiday gifts. ... Read more

Book Description

The more than two hundred striking duotone plates in Hilla and Bernd Becher's Industrial Facades continue the famousD?orf photographers' formal investigation of industrial structures, in this case the frontal elevations of factory buildings. Like the Bechers' earlier books on water towers, blast furnaces, and gas tanks, Industrial Facades once again clearly displays their serenely cool, rigorous approach to the structures they photograph as vaariations on an ideal form. The Bechers make no attempt to analyze or explain their subjects. Captions contain only the barest of information: time and place.

Industrial Facades covers the whole range of periods and designs representing this building type: from austere brick buildings of the early industrial age and the arched windows and turrets decorating historicist facades, to the concrete and glass functionalist constructions of the 1950s and 1960s, to today's rectangular, windowless halls.

These photographs give the lie to Louis Sullivan's often misunderstood motto, "form follows function," for the external appearance of the factory buildings shown here are hardly determined by their internal working processes. For this reason, the Bechers' photographs do not really illustrate the development of modern industrial architecture, nor the achievements of functionalist building, but rather the achievements of banal, everyday architecture, produced by builders trained in crafts or by engineers trained in the necessities of the industrial process.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Photos/Beautiful Buildings
The late 19th and early 20th century brick masonry buildings along the northern edge of Germany and Poland are some of the most beautifully crafted buildings I have ever seen. The countryside and towns have scores of them, especially along the rail lines. Becher has done an excellent job of documenting and presenting these buildings. This book is a gem.

4-0 out of 5 stars Industrial Facades
This has the greatest collection of industrial buildings collected. All the structures come from a time when form and functionality were borh given equal weight. Though most of these buildings are founderies or machine shops, the thoughtfullness of their designs were well worth documenting. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book...a true head start for assistants!
Super book! I don't live in a big city so it's hard to get this information from other assistants. There aren't any here. This is time well spent. Matt knows his stuff and gives us a good insider's glimpse of how to work the jobs and, best, how to keep learning.

His section on interviews with assistants who are working with the really big names in the business broadens the scope of information. These people are the best of the best (like Matt) and he has pulled their words and experiences into the lessons for us to read. Super!

Apparently, the reader (here) from Lake Villa, IL misses the point when she/he claims that by working as an assistant for ten years, Matt is somehow lacking. She/he goes on the say that's not typical. Well, I know assistants who have worked longer and wonder why it's a negative to work as an assistant for a long time? Some of us work for two months and some work for fifteen years. What difference does it make? Matt's term as an assistant obviously qualified him to write the best book on the subject. I'm sure business is good in Lake Villa, but I wonder if having "made the step" as soon as she/he did means anything at all? Did it help her/him to become good enough to write a book?

Some assistants, like photographers, keep learning for years and years. It's never "done." It's about a process. Matt has spent the time well, becoming the best in the business (according to some of the reviewers) and I'm just glad he wrote this book to share the good stuff with us.

"Lake Villa" reviewer writes "Proulx never made the decision to "take the last step" and start a business of his own."

I attended a recent seminar given by Matt and I saw his portfolio and some recent jobs. He's started his career in a big way. Maybe in a few years, he'll write the book for those of us who (hopefully) are becoming "people" shooters for advertising.

In the meantime...thanks for the head start, Matt.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Place to Start
A little background: I'm a freelance photographer, not an assistant. I bought this book right after I got out of photography school as a means of learning more about the industry and what potential photography-related jobs might be available to me. What I came to understand is this: if you think being an assistant is a cool part-time job or just something you'll do until you can start making money as a photographer, think again. The most compelling reason to work as a studio assistant is to learn how studio photography works (and doesn't work), and it takes time to do this -- generally years and not months.

Also, if you have no intentions of getting into studio photography, this book may be of limited use to you. While various disciplines are discussed at one point, they are not covered in enough detail to really help you understand what's going on. In short, this book is about helping photographers to set up a scene (either in a studio, a church or an office building) and photograph that scene. Some examples would be fashion photography, weddings, food, products, still lifes, etc.

That said, Proulx gives a wealth of information about what it's like to be on the set of a photo-shoot and generally leaves no stone unturned. You quickly realize that buying a box of doughnuts or cleaning a bathroom sink will be just as much a part of your job as setting up backdrops or strobe lights. It's not glamorous and it's not high-paying, but if you want to learn how a successful studio operates (so that you can run your own one day) there's no better way. Perhaps the most valuable asset this book provides are all the little tips and tricks of the trade...how to negotiate terms of pay, what kind of tape you need, how to keep your tools organized, etc.

However, I find it a little disconcerting that Mr. Proulx cosiders himself as still learning the trade even though he's been doing assitant work for over ten years (if memory serves me correctly). That is not typical I can assure you and I think it is something the author overlooks in terms of his advice to people starting out. The bottom line is, you can learn a lot from being an assistant for a couple of years and it will help you tremendously when setting up your own business, .... It would seem Proulx never made the decision to "take the last step" and start a business of his own.

.... If you're interested in studio photography, get this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars For every assistant's kit
I am the author of The Location Photographer's Handbook and have been a photographer for thirty years. I've just enjoyed my first reading of The Photographic Assistant Handbook.

It is, of course, thorough and informative as one would expect from Matt Proulx. It's also written in a breezy yet crisp, clear, and professional manner. I think it goes a long way to putting readers at ease about the stress of photographic apprenticeship, a valuable service in itself.

There were many things I learned, from a trick about monitoring flashes placed far from the camera, to better ways to cut seamless paper, to a clever idea for checking in luggage carts on flights.

Matt's book should be part of any assistant's standard kit, along with the sharpies, scissors, and gaffers tape. It wouldn't hurt those of us who have graduated to careers to stock it as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "Has to be Readen" Book
In my opinion , this is a great book which everybody working in this industry (assistants and fotographer) should have a look on.

As a rookie Photographer, this book helps me a lot to understand how this industry is working and I am currently saving a lot of money using some ideas taken out of this book.

I think it is not necessarely to add more descriptions on this book as the summaries of Gary Gladstone and Tim Trautmann are very well done.

5-0 out of 5 stars The defacto reference for Photo Assistants
I ordered Matt's book a couple of weeks before my first assisting job. In retrospect, I would have been very ill prepared without Matt's easy to read book. The various checklists and lists of tools were worth the price of the book alone. In addition, the book discusses and describes in detail how to get work, how the relationship between assistant, photographer and the photographer's client should be held and various details including how and when to get paid, what an assistant's responsibilities are and how to solve various common problems. In later chapters you will get tips on how to plan you career and how to make the jump from assistant to shooter. In short, to the serious assistant and those that want to become successful in this field, this book is worth every penny of it's price. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Wildi is conservative but makes his point
I am a big Ernst Wildi fan! That said, some observations should be noted: Wildi writes lucidly, logically, and tries to teach the reader in every one of his works. His photography is excellent and he really does not hide the fact he is a Hasselblad guru! Perhaps, he assumes that some of his points that are written and diagrammed to demonstrate, are obvious to all readers, and does not go into great depth. Yes, I got it! People wanting more from Ernst on techniques should check out his book, "Achieving the Ultimate Image." These 2 works could have been combined into one; re-titled "The Ultimate Image in Medium Format" or similar.

2-0 out of 5 stars More focus on Medium Format please!
Ernst Wildi's book was quite a disappointment to me, as the title made me believe, that it would be a competent appraisal of the different formats and a recommandation of fields of photography where the size of medium format would win the game. But after a couple of chapters concerned with different formats, cropping and camera types the rest is just an ordinary photography primer with really no news. Additionally the illustrations are often handdrawn and really not of the quality you would expect to find in a book like this.

I feel seriously misguided by the title and wonder if I dare order the other wellknown Ernst Wildi title on a specific medium format brand... ... Read more

Book Description

First Photographs is an extraordinary view into the origins of photography. This landmark monograph - the only book on Talbot to be authored by the Fox Talbot museum's curator - includes many never-before-published images of landscapes, architectural studies, and portraits from Talbot's personal archive and selections from his detailed research notebooks made during the 1830s and 1840s and currently housed at Lacock Abbey in Chippenham, England.A gentleman and an intellectual, Talbot was a great student of the Arts and Sciences and kept detailed notes of his activities and experiments. He discovered the negative/positive paper process which made multiple reproductions of a single image possible, and which distinguished it from its contemporary, the one-of-a-kind daguerreotype.Talbot first announced his invention to the public in 1839 in his paper "An Account Of The Art of Photogenic Drawing Or The Process By Which Natural Objects May Be Made To Delineate Themselves Without The Aid Of The Artist's Pencil."The work he did during this time established in principle and in practice the foundation of modern photography - the basis of the process that is still used today. In addition to Talbot's technological contributions, his photographs represent exceptional artistic achievement.First Photographs includes a significant text by the preeminent Talbot scholar today, Michael Gray, who provides a comprehensive essay, biography, and timeline of Talbot's eventful life and revolutionary work.Arthur Ollman, director of the Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego, gives an in-depth analysis of the aesthetic and social significance of Talbot's first image, the "Oriel Window." Curator Carol McCusker considers how the Romantic Movement and the women of the Lacock household influenced Talbot's aesthetic choices.First Photographs and the accompanying exhibition provide a rare opportunity for contemporary audiences to experience these uncommon images and the personal, cultural, and scientific contexts in which they were made.William Henry Fox Talbot (1800-1877) was a philosopher, classicist, Egyptologist, mathematician, philologist, transcriber and translator of Syrian and Chaladean cuneiform texts, physicist, and photographer. His first experiments in photography made use of the photogenic process; he then went on to develop the process of creating negatives that could be used to make positive reproductions. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Photography writer leaders
Not what I expected from Hicks & Schultz. I have been purchasing alot of travel photo books lately due to my decided direction with my photography. This book is way less value than I expected. Lacks direction, many other book available here that are way better value and offer alot more. Tends to tell the reader what he already knows. Not up to there usual standards...Maybe of interest to the novice..any higher than that...forget it.. Dissapointing!!

4-0 out of 5 stars A good place to start
I wish I had this book when I began my travel writing career. It includes most of what a beginner needs to know, without spending too much time with minor details.

I found it to be a good tool for answering hard to find answers, but the best way to learn is just by doing it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great how-to book for travel photographers.
Hicks and Shultz will be the first to admit there is no fortune to be made in travel photography. But for those of us out there who want to at least try, they have given the perfect starting point with an easy to read book offering wonderful advice and enviable photo illustrations. The authors explain in detailed chapters the tools, attitudes, business sense and intuition needed to break into the business. After reading the book, I have no doubts about my direction in travel photography. No matter what your book reading style, whether a pick up and read at leisure person or a read all at once person, the book is adapted to either. Many people will enjoy the friendly way the text is written making photo enthusiasts feel as though they are life long friends with the authors. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A Broad Brush
Professional Nature Photography by Nigel Hicks

This book is aimed at guiding a photographer into a career in nature photography. It is not concerned with photography techniques (for the most part) but rather with the logistics of earning a living as a nature photographer. The approach is a logical one, first giving the reader an overview of the nature photography "industry", and then telling one how to find clients.Hicks discusses such things as legal rights, photo libraries and even self-publishing.

The author writes about traveling for photography and how to prepare for it.He acknowledges that one of the biggest problems that the professional photographer will face is loneliness, and suggests ways of dealing with it.He talks about managing the office and buying equipment, both photographic and otherwise. In a chapter on "special skills", he provides a concise statement of nature photography techniques that can serve well as a short course in the subject.

I particularly enjoyed his chapter on professional issues.I had never considered the ethics of photographing in a "disreputable" zoo, and thereby supporting its work.

The book is profusely illustrated with Hicks' nature photographs, which are of high quality, but bear no relationship to the text. Moreover, the text itself mostly suggests what I found to be self-evident.The details are not emphasized. For example, the author says that it may be possible to barter with hotels and airlines while working for other clients.I would have liked to know which functionary in an organization was best to approach to initiate such a deal. But that level of detail was never provided. One thing of which the book convinced me is that breaking into nature photography is one tough job.

I found that even though it was not aimed at showing you how to become a professional photographer, the biographies contained in "The World?s Top Photographers: Wildlife", by Terry Hope, provided more clues about routes into a professional photography career while showing a world-class collection of pictures. And John Shaw's "Business of Nature Photography" still seems a better guide to making a living in this field. ...
