3-0 out of 5 stars Not overly impressed
With a little common sense you can skip reading Mr. Hollenbeck's book. Everytime I want more depth and detail, there is none, but in other ways the book is amazingly repitive and redundant.

5-0 out of 5 stars BIG BUCKS AND HOW TO GET THEM
This book by Cliff Hollenbeck is a real "find " for anyone desiring to make money with a camera. Most of us who go into the photography business sort of slide into it without much of an idea how to go about it. Most of us, when we reach a point where people are willing to pay for our photos, have some pretty abysmal business practices and stagger from crisis to crisis until we learn all lessons the hard way. We arrive at that point just before the evil eye of bankruptcy fixes on us.

Hollenbeck's book covers all bases from writing a business plan to negotiating prices for use of photos. I suspect that anyone who follows his advice from day one "in the business," will achieve far more success than they would by just winging it. Fortunately, all the business advice is served up with a wit and brevity that make learning it an enjoyable exercise. Knowing that he has been exceptionally successful in his own professional life lends weight to his suggestions. Hollenbeck and his wife are one of the most successful teams working in the area of Travel and Editorial photography. Their book "Great Travel Photography" is a great companion volume.

Not to try covering the whole universe of making money with a camera, but there are two additional books I would recommend. Rohn Engh has a couple of books that would, with the Hollenbeck pair, form a great basic library for anyone interested in a photographic career. They are, "How to Sell and Resell Your Photos" and "Sell Photos.Com."

Thanks,

Bill Halley

5-0 out of 5 stars Overwhelming inspiration
Hollensbeck's book is filled with so much information that it is a bit overwhelming at first reading. However, more importantly, the man is an inspiration. I found the book to be full of encouragement and solid business ideas that have influenced my own approach to business.

5-0 out of 5 stars Realities of the Photographer's Profession !
An absolute necessity for the serious photographer considering the prospect of photography as a financial reward in addition to creative expression. Within the pages of this book, I found an inspiration as well as a reality check. Past the "Glamour & Glitter" visions most associate with the title of "Photographer" lies the realization of the need for good sense business practices & procedures. Too be a success at any business one must learn what it takes to conduct that profession & do it well. That is just what this book will provide you. An arsenol of information from the basic requirements of technical knowlege to sales & marketing yourself & your images. Up-to-Date resources & techniques. This is one of the most practical books on the business of photography I have purchased & studied and recommend anyone interested in starting a career as a professional photographer should include this book within their reference library. Do yourself a favor, READ THIS BOOK IF YOU REALLY WANT TO SUCCEED! Mr. Hollenbeck...THANK YOU for OPENING MY EYES !

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, but strong message...
I found "Big Bucks..." to be a practical and straight forward lesson in how to maximize your opportunities as a photographer. The key theme that I was left with was as a photographer, I am not taking pictures as much as selling pictures. This and the fact that basic business skills are what make or break a photographer is hammered into the reader. I loved Cliff's way of proving a point through a real life example or story.

All photographers should read this book! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Predictable and outdated
There are some good tips, but this is strictly for the in-house portrait photographer using the standard 4 light system. A couple of good tips regarding broad vs. narrow lighting, height of main light, and use of light modifiers, but only about 3 pages on the actual business of portrait photography. Images in my opinion are outdated, and not that great. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Grunge is unfairly maligned, and I believe this proves it
I LOVED the whole grunge,"heroin chic" movement-NOT for its drug connotations, but because FINALLY the spackled-on make-up,the foo foo clothes, the ridiculous glamour lighting,it all ceased. Here you've got a rare, gorgeous pic of Stella Tennant WITH her nose ring(she looked SO much better with it!),by Paolo Roversi no less. You've got a vaguely punkish Rosemary Ferguson,by Corrine Day.Other major photographers are also represented-Juergen Teller,Craig McDean,Mario Sorrenti(Rachel Williams with raccoon eyes,a belly-button ring...and little else;)....the list is endless, really. This is a really COOL book,it is the very DEFINITION of cool. And it may change your mind about grunge!

1-0 out of 5 stars Unorthodox and avant-garde but mainly depressing
If this is photography of fashion in the nineties, give me the eighties. Some of the photos are memorable; a few are excellent, but most are uninspiring, often approaching tragic. Joy and fashion are obviously not meant to co-exist, at least in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a book of educible, suductive images! A must have!
This is a book to which people react! Blurring the lines between fashion photography, "Art" photography, sex, and gender, this book is an articulate and provocative essay on the scarcely delinated state of beauty, style, and sexuality; art, commercialism, and culture.

I highly recommend it. ... Read more

"If your pictures aren't good enough, you're not close enough," said Robert Capa, the legendary photojournalist who, with Henri Cartier-Bresson and other documentary shooters, founded the Magnum press agency in 1947. Capa got close to the action, of course; he died under fire in Indo-China in 1954, seeking the perfect image of war. Other Magnum photographers died in places like Afghanistan, Israel, and Chechnya, always at the forefront of battle and strife, always with an eye on capturing history as it unfolded. In this well-written study of their work, British journalist Russell Miller shows how their images have changed the ways in which we respond to war, politics, and crises. --Gregory McNamee ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book
Russell Miller has written a wonderful book, both funny and sad. It depicts the times of the most creative photographers of the 20th century. I have recommended this book to my camera club and anyone who is interested in photography.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heroes, made real and understandable
Russell Miller outlines the history of the world's greatest photo agency from its founding shortly after World War II until its advancement into the 90's. He includes personal stories about many of the photographers. The book also charts a course between many of the conflicting visions held by the members for the purpose of the agency. As you read the book, you have to remind yourself that Magnum is a "cooperative," because rarely do the members show this spirit. At its start, Cartier-Bresson wanted pictures with artistic vision. Capa wanted hard core reportage. In later years, Martin Parr's overtly critical portrayals of his subjects tested the agency's humanistic mission. All along, the great photographers prove to be fantastically poor businessmen. Russell Miller's history of does a lot to humanize some of the gods of photojournalism. As someone who has spent several years in graduate school, I enjoyed hearing that not all of these people were perfect. It is genuinely funny to learn that Eugene Smith's seven year Pittsburgh project was actually only intended to be a two week assignment. What beginning photographer hasn't made the same kind of mistake, deciding that a story was worthy of far greater time than budgeted for by your teacher or editor? Miller's account of Smith probably goes so far as to provide a cautionary tale to aspiring photographers about the need to draw boundaries to your work life. This book would be a good addition to a college photography course. It covers its subject expansively, but it tells the story in a chronological narrative that keeps the reader turning pages quickly.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book about the passion of art and photojournalis
This is a wonderful book about people who are passionate about their craft. Miller takes us on a journey into one of the worlds premier photo agencies, showing the reader its inner workings, along with the in-fighting. It is an in depth story of some of the worlds best photographers (past and present)and the agency that represents them. It is a wonderful read, detailing the hows and whys of some of the most enduring images in history. This book is highly reccommended to anyone intrested in photojournalism.

4-0 out of 5 stars An honest, well detailed depiction of the agency
Given that I had worked at Magnum as well as for several of the members, I thought that the Miller's book fairly depcited the personalities and management of the agency. Alas the book does not delve into why the new members have difficulty in living off as an associate member, or even tries to look into these problems. The history of photography and the timing of Magnum's incorporation came together fortuitously during the acme of the profession. The days of magazines such as Look, Life, and the commercial business of still photography have disappeared with the advent of color TV and Internet. Maybe they should have looked into Web pages. This is not to belittle their brilliant work in the past (I still consider my days at Magnum as the most influential in my life and still have friends in the agency), but given the original format for membership within Magnum, they should reconsider other options. Maybe such treatment would be out of context of the book, although ! it would delve into the many problems of still photography in today's world. ... Read more

Book Description

Editorial, press and PR photographers need to be able to take a range of interesting and informative photographs -from celebrity portraits to magazine covers, news events, promotional pictures and fashion assignments. Success in these areas requires not just individual flair and skill, but an ability to market those talents in order to win space in publications. Based on the author's own experience of undertaking assignments for national and local newpapers, trade magazines, PR clients and book publishers - this book is a practical guide to the art of 'being professional'.

The book is packed with hints, tips and first-hand advice on the day-to-day running of a business, the equipment you need and how to organise your finances - all the things that professionals might wish they had known when they first started out. Advice on the best way to present your portfolio and how to deal with clients and work to a brief is also given.

Sections on practical technique show the best way to approach a variety of assignments, with suggestions for good composition, what equipment to use and how to get the best results. The examples range from location work, to press assignments, pack-shots, cover pictures, portraits, events and picture stories. The reader is then taken into the studio and shown the principles of lighting and how to control exposure with greater precision than is normally possible in the field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read this before you start (I mean it!)
This book should be required reading for anyone considering making a living in press, editorial, and PR photography in the United Kingdom or elsewhere. It sould be required reading for anybody considering to consider this profession, and any aspiring photographer could do worse than reading this book.

It is, essentially, an unsentimental guide to becoing a profesional photographer. It is unsentimental in the best sense of the word: it tells it like it is. "A staff position ... is no longer a job for life". So there: You'll need a variety of skills to make ends meet. He laments students who wants to take Tom Stoddart-esque picture stories but are only prepared to give photography a year or two, to see how it goes. In his realistic and unsetimental way he points out that you need commitment: "Tom Stoddart didn't start out covering ... life in Albania but, rather, was one of the pack who snapped Lady Diana Spencer..." True, even if many would rather hear differently.

This is above all a practical book with tips on everything from how to get a job to how to invoice your clients. It is lavishly illustrated with Tarrant's images from real assignments.

The final section describes the careers of a handful of famous photographers (Rod Ashford, Roger Bamber, Chris Bennet, Ken Lennox, Jim Marks, Paul Stewart, and Tom Stoddart): how did they start? how did they develop their careers? This section alone is worth the purchase price -- a true gem! ... Read more

As with all Parr's projects this book is not only hilarious but also raises broader issues of identity and self, questioning the whole notion of the photographic portrait. Whenever Parr travels on assignment he has had his picture taken by a local studio photographer, or street photographer or in a photo booth. The result is a wonderfully varied portfolio of portraits ranging from elaborate studio sets reminiscent of the heyday of the Victorian studio photographer; through to digitally manipulated images of Parr as Mr Universe. ... For those of you - like me - gnashing your teeth trying to get your hands on all those out-of-print Martin Parr books, this one's a gem, and, thankfully, totally available. The 50 or so portraits of Parr, taken by studio photographers in exotic locales, are dripping with irony and loaded with critical comment on the role of the image in the early 21st. Parr achieves this impact in such a simple, straightforward manner, all you can say - through your uproarious laughter - is: this guy's a genius. ... Read more

Book Description

Icons and Legends spans the career of American photographer Michael Childers, including many photographs that are published for the first time. Childers was one of the founding photographers for Andy Warhol’s magazine Interview; he photographed magazine covers for Elle, Life, and Vogue; and he worked as a special photographer for films and London National Theater productions.

Working mostly with black and white film, Childers has captured the icons and legends of popular culture and the art world. His stunning portraits include Natalie Wood, Robert Wagner, Clint Eastwood, Catherine Deneuve, Rock Hudson, and Carol Channing. Several portraits are of special importance because they were taken early in the actors' careers, before they became celebrities: Sissy Spacek, Demi Moore, Mel Gibson, John Travolta, Richard Gere, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Equally important are portraits of the great film industry legends who helped establish and build the stars' careers, including film directors Billy Wilder and John Schlesinger and costume designer Edith Head.

In addition to stars of the film world, Childers has produced portraits of contemporary artists, architects, writers, and musicians. These include a series of photographs of Andy Warhol in his New York studio and Paris apartment, and a series of David Hockney in his Hollywood and London studios. Other portraits include artists Sam Francis, Edward Ruscha, Robert Graham, and Ed Moses; architects Richard Meier and E. Stewart Williams; musicians Ringo Starr, Cat Stevens, Grace Jones, and Rod Stewart; and writers Tennessee Williams, Micky Spillane, and Christopher Rice. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars stock for travel and nature photographers
This book is an overview of what Antrobus does to be a successful stock photographer. Short chapters with pithy (if not completely unique) advice from someone who seems to be successfully pursuing a career selling stock.

What makes this book stand out are the images. Most are beautiful scenics, landscapes, and what might be generally classified as travel photography. Locations are exotic (at least from the west coast of the U.S.), and Antrobus must have a special relation with the weather gods, or a great deal of time and patience. He is a talented photographer. Talented enough to buy a local postcard, find the same location, take his own version of the same picture, and sell it multiple times.

Many of the images have been sold multiple times, and Antrobus reports how many times they have been sold, what his total earnings for an image is, and when he first sold it. While this information isn't included for every image, I would suspect that all of the pictures here have been sold (or could easily be). I find this information very useful - it's both encouraging (I could make a picture like this) and discouraging (I never see locations this beautiful). But useful nonetheless - if your are interested in landscape or nature photography, here are many successful models to follow.

Most stock photo books (and many postings on stock email lists) state that the major demand for stock is for people - generally (paid) models with a signed release. I can't dispute that, but this book shows a different path. I don't think that a single image here falls into that category.

The negatives? Antrobus, well along in his successful career, doesn't mention that everyone has to start at the beginning. No mention of his first sale. Or how to break in. Or how to get a library or buyer to notice you when you're just starting. Or specific assignments that might be an easier, of lower paid, sale. A few chapters on topics like this would be most welcome.

Book Description

Quietly but implacably, powerful transnational corporations are gaining power over our visual world. A 'global, visual content industry' increasingly controls images supplied to advertisers, marketers and designers, yet so far the process has, paradoxically, evaded the public eye.

This book is the first to expose the interior workings of the visual content industry, which produces approximately 70% of the images that define consumer cultures. The corporate acquisition of major photographic and film archives, as well as the digital rights to much of the world’s fine art, is having a profound effect on what we see. From stock photography to new technologies, this book powerfully engages with the historical and cultural issues relating to visual culture and new media. How has stock photography, the system of ‘renting out’ ready-made images, transformed the role of marketing and advertising? What impact are digital technologies having on the practices of industry professionals? How have software programs such as Photoshop enabled professionals to play ‘God’ with photographs and how does this influence our belief in the integrity of images?

Combining original research on stock photography with a new theoretical take on the circulation of images in contemporary culture, The Image Factory provides a comprehensive and in-depth exploration of industrialized commercial photography, its uses and abuses.
