Book Description

see, a quarterly journal published by The Friends of Photography, presents striking photography and fine writing that explore the impact of lens-based images on contemporary culture.

Unlike other photography-related journals currently being published, see neither limits itself to technical aspects of the artmaking process nor isolates the medium by presenting images in a strictly photographic context. Rather, see places the medium within the broad discourse of visual culture, including literature that addresses visual ideas. Photographs by contemporary artists as well as classic or underappreciated images culled from the medium's 150-year history, and from other image-based media, are featured in tandem with fiction, poetry, essays, and critical writings that respond to our image-dominated surroundings.

In addition to beautifully reproduced portfolios of artists' work and insightful, provocative writings, regular features of see include a section of artist's pages; reviews of current exhibitions, books, and multimedia titles; and a column in which see editor-in-chief Andy Grundberg addresses topical issues. Another regular feature addresses original and humorous analyses of fictional photographers within the realm of popular culture.

Contents of the premier issue:
Portfolio, Susan Derges.
Viewfinder, fiction by Raymond Carver. Real Estate Photographs, Henry Wessel. Anna Lee's Pictures, Julia Parker-Pribuss. Bedrooms, poem by Sandra McPherson.
Open Space: One Story about June Riley, Susan Schwartzenberg. Skellig, David Ireland. The Africa Series, Carrie Mae Weems. Out of a Picture by Arbus, essay by Rebecca Solnit. Collage, poem by Quincy Troupe. The Presidio: A City Woodland, Lyle Gomes.
In Print: Road Work, reviews by Glen Helfand. The Photographers: The Shooter, essay by Michael Read.

3-0 out of 5 stars A bit disappointed
I've been a longtime fan of Nick Knight's work. However, the PRESENTATION of "Nicknight" IMO doesn't justify his work. There is too much disparity in the images, unlike his other photo monographs.

The first thing that disappointed me with this volume is the archive of 1980's B&W images, which are presented in a sort of concise "thumbnail" layout. They are representative of Knight's dynamic and bold portraits of edgy British culture. I really would've liked these images to have been presented full-page.

And one (usually insignificant) thing which I thought was "flawed" is the typeface used throughout the book. There are several different font faces and sizes used, causing page after page to look rather "inconsistent".

But nonetheless, the images THEMSELVES do show the innovations in photography pioneered by Knight.

This book is somewhat "outdated", but I'm sure it was something when it was first published. It applied the "Novaspace" printing technique which allowed for a new wide color gamut printing. Though more modern advancements have been more improved. I wouldn't recommend NOT buying this book, but I would advise you NOT to pay +$100 for it (Even though you may be only able to get it for that as it's out of print). And if you buy it USED, I wouldn't worry about a missing slipcase (it's just a VERY cheap piece of cardboard which will fall apart anyway, just keeps the velvet cover clean).

5-0 out of 5 stars WALDO THE TYRANT
nick will go to any lenghs to get a picture, from covering young ladys in grease paint to portray dying david, or employing 20 skinheads to hold a cross but his final pictures always envole some form of oral bondage miss you waldo a bournemouth granny

5-0 out of 5 stars An imaginative, beautiful and thought-provoking book...
Although I tend to be drawn to b & w photographs, I couldn't help being captivated by Nick Knight and his colorful vision (some of his stuff is in b & w as well). I saw one of his pictures in a library book and knew right then and there that I had to see more of his work. From portraits and fashion to the avant-garde and surreal he manages to turn his subjects into something both exciting and delicate, vivid and intriguing. I wish more people knew about him, and I hope others take the chance I did by buying this book. You won't regret it. It even has a soft velvety cover! (giggle) Enjoy ... Read more

Book Description

This book appears in conjunction with an exhibition organized by The Art Institute of Chicago that focuses on the late work of photographer Edward Weston. Taken between1938 and 1948, these images reveal his shift from his formalist style, characterized by technological virtuosity and innovative compositions, to one that accommodated a greater psychological component. The first photographs of this period date from Weston's return to his spiritual home near Carmel, California, during his second Guggenheim fellowship. He now saw the surrounding coast with different eyes: while he had once focused on details and still lifes, he now found himself drawn to vistas, horizons, the movement of water, and moody atmospheres of elemental power. The seventy-plus photographs in this book, sumptuously printed in tritone reproductions, include--in addition to his images of nature--Weston's powerful portraits of his immediate family, as well as domestic scenes taken in and around his home. Also included is a critical essay exploring Weston's life and work during this period, by David Travis, Curator of Photography at the Art Institute and a longtime specialist in the career of Edward Weston.
Hardcover, 10.5 x 11.5 inches, 144 pages, 100 tritone illustrations.
Exhibition Schedule: Art Institute of Chicago, June-October 2001; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, March-June 2002.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rich and dark food for thought
This is a catalog for a show currently at San Francisco MOMA, launched in Chicago last year. (Weston came from Illinois and did most of his work in California.) It is essentially a re-edition of Weston's My Camera On Point Lobos, published in 1951 and again in 1968. The major change is text by David Travis replacing excerpts from Weston's daybooks in the original.

The text is intended to humanize someone who is mostly mythical by describing and interpreting events in the last years of his life at Point Lobos. It presents the author's analysis of Weston's career, state of mind and the evolution of his late style. There is little or no new material here and the analysis is strained, but thoughtful.

There are some intelligent comparisons presented of Weston's late and early views of the same subject. As a collection this is not a good introduction to Weston. It is a good final chapter to the Daybooks and a beautiful collection of reproductions. It is also a good companion to Ansel Adams at 100, showing how these two friends viewed many of the same subjects so differently. It would be a good addition to reading Charis Wilson's Through Another Lens, showing many pictures of domestic life including Weston's children, cats, and many of Charis Wilson. There is a lot of "inside baseball" here, both explicit and implied.

There is at least one important image in the show that is not in the catalog and there are many important omissions from the show itself, which make this a poor place to start studying Weston's work. For the record, both Weston and Adams experimented with color in the late 40s, shooting the same images in color and black and white. The color images aren't good but they are a very good way to show why their respective monochrome images are so strong.

It is worth repeating that while the printed images are as good as any you'll see, they are not even close to the 8X10 contact prints in the show. This really matters in Weston's work. If you have a chance to see the San Francisco show, before it is put away for another 10 years, you will also see additional earlier prints from SFMOMA's outstanding permanent collection which put the theme of the show into context that is missing from the book.

This is Weston when he was only satisfying his own search for meaning, not making statements or presenting his vision to the world. These are his final meditations and he knew it. They are by far his richest and most abstract work and worthy of a lot of study.

5-0 out of 5 stars Edward Weston: The Last Years in Carmel
A finely printed book that features more than the regular images that every other book has. The essay is a very worthwhile read. It offers wonderful insites to the photogrpaher at the end of his working career.A real must to any Weston colection of books.

4-0 out of 5 stars A squirrelly, but talented photographer
Edward Weston was one of the most squirelly, yet most talented photographers in the history of the medium - he rarely smiled, wore women's clothes, never learned to drive, married a woman 30 years his junior, lived in a shack in Carmel and loved philandering with Tina Modotti and others. He died with $300 in the bank in 1958, yet his photograph of a Circus Tent went at auction a few years ago for $266,000. His influence on photography and photographers was immense. Two of his four sons, Brett and Cole, became accomplished image makers and his grandson now carries on that same tradition, even living in the same shack on Wildcat Hill in Carmel. This book covers roughly the last 10 years of his photographs 1938-1948. The images are superbly produced and well-chosen but the text was a bit overbearing and heavy on the theory that in the last years Weston was overly concerned with death which was represented in his images. Certainly his images of Point Lobos are a bit dark and morose with pictures of dead trees and pelicans, but that's Point Lobos! During this period he also made whimsical images of his wife wearing a gas mask in the nude and playing a flute while a cat looks on with a surprised glance. Weston was full of LIFE, not death. Thirty years before his death in 1958 he made an image of a corpse at a time when his relationship with his future wife was rosy and he was spending time with his beloved sons. His final work does not seem any more concerned with death than it was in his earlier years. But, forget the text! Photography books are similar to Playboy magazines anyway - we buy them to look at the pictures, not read the text!! This is a terrific book and I can't wait to view the actual images at The Art Institute of Chicago.

5-0 out of 5 stars the mature artist
Not just a great presentation of Weston's last productive years, the essay by the Chicago Art Institute's Curator of Photography provides the best understanding to date of what it means to be a mature artist - and why it was that Weston was viewed by his peers, including Ansel Adams, Minor White, Imogen Cunningham as the consummate photographer, the proof that photography like other forms was capable of synthesizing interior and exterior realities into works of profound emotional and aesthetic power. A great contribution! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional book
From comparing the myriad of items dealt with in this book, after looking at the table of contents, against the relative small number of pages, I thought this is going to be another contents-deceiving phony book, full of nicely printed color pictures, period. What a surprise! Every comment Mr Kopelow has to offer about the many aspects of commercial photography, is always deeply thought, clearly analysed, and concisely written, ranging from quite valuable to, as in the case of his approach to home color printing, just sensational. His approach to the digital beast is bold and inspiring. Besides, or perhaps most important of all, after reading the book, I am not only technically better imformed than before, but quite refreshed by the original and deeply honest personality of the writer, whose love for photography as well as for human beings is quite transparent. Exceptional value. ... Read more

Book Description

This new book is aimed at serious photographers who would who would like to turn their avocation into a money making venture.

Written by veteran photographer Scott Bourne, 88 Secrets to Selling & Publishing Your Photography (ISBN 0976187809) is published by Olympic Mountain School Press.

"How can I make money with my photography is almost the first question every serious amateur photographer asks me," said Bourne. "Or they want to see their name in lights by getting a byline when their photo is published."

In the book, Bourne provides answers to many of the questions asked by students at the workshops he teaches around the country through Olympic Mountain School of Photography.

The book is divided into three sections. The first section offers general tips for photographers who want to sell or publish their photos. The second section is specifically geared toward publishing and the third section focuses on selling.

Pre-publication copies of the book have already drawn rave reviews from the professional photography community.

David Middleton, a nationally-known nature photographer and author of 10 books, wrote the foreword for 88 Secrets and said, "Let me just say this right at the beginning: Scott Bourne is a marketing wizard."

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple and Effective
This book does just one thing for a person hoping to derive income from the sale of photographs. It tells you how to sell photographs.

It doesn't tell you anything about equipment, or picture taking, or processing, or even how to run a photography business. It doesn't even take a comprehensive approach to marketing.Instead it provides useful tips on marketing photography, period. Moreover, Bourne doesn't just limit himself to one market, like stock photography. He covers all the markets and if one secret isn't applicable to you, the next one may be right up your alley.

Calling it "88 Secrets" is a misnomer, because many of the ideas contained are simple common sense that someone interested in selling pictures could figure out for him or herself.Secondly, there are far more than 88 secrets because many of sections called secrets contain more than one idea for marketing.

The reader will sometimes say, I knew that, sometimes say, I should have known that, and sometimes say, I never thought of that. But if you read the book and you follow some of the tips, you will increase sales of your pictures.Although the book is quite short, it's also inexpensive and the person willing to follow Bourne's advice will soon amortize the cost of the book.It probably won't put you in direct competition with Art Wolfe, but it will increase your photographic income if you have the will power to follow the tips.

For example, the author discusses a traditional subject, query letters to editors to whom one hopes to sell pictures. He tells you what has to go into a letter if you want to get the editor's attention. He even provides a sample letter.

In the very next paragraph, Bourne discusses something relatively new, e-books and how to go about publishing them.He even suggests software that will ease the work, and even how to structure an e-book.He says photography e-books are most popular if they take a how-to, travel, or adventure approach."It will be easier to sell an e-book that features pictures of Yellowstone National Park if it is written as a travelogue rather than an attractive Yellowstone picture book."

I've read a few books on marketing pictures and sometimes find reasonable marketing advice buried in the verbiage.Often it's aimed at just one market. Here it's simple and effective. All one has to do is read a secret and follow it.And of course, take a reasonably good picture.

5-0 out of 5 stars No longer a secret
Making money from photography is everyones dream but a tough goal in reality. This book has helped me define my goals for marketing my photography. As an amateur turning pro this book has been a life saver.Bourne clearly and concisely outlines a variety of methods to market your work. The beauty of the book lies in it's set up.You can pick and choose what you want to use and attack each new obstacle one step at a time. I highly recommend 88 Secrets to anyone interested in turning their dream into a profitable business.

5-0 out of 5 stars One more secret!
Here is one more secret. This book is worth way more than its list price.

Anyone, from novice to seasoned pro, interested in earning money making pictures needs this book.I am a serious amateur photographer.I plan to turn my photography into a lucrative hobby when I retire in several years. Thanks to 88 Secrets I will not have to waste time testing what will work.Scott Bourne gives the reader of his book a proven track record to follow.

Buy this book. You will find it invaluable when you put Scott Bourne's recommendations into action.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for anyone wanting to market their photos.
Scott Bourne is an outstanding teacher and successful marketer. The book exemplifies this by being well organized, very readable and packed with valuable information for any photographer wanting to market and sell photographs.

The three divisions of the book are well thought out.As I considered marketing my photos the section on "general secrets" was very helpful. The last two sections provide valuable information on who to contact for sales and all the issues that need to be considered to complete a successful business transaction.
