Book Description Reviews (17)
Potentially, the biggest addition is the CD-ROM, which has CAD files ready to use, and includes pretty much everything from the book. You might think that you are getting all that for the cost of the book, but...no. The "demo" CD comes in a sleeve inside the back cover, and is noted: "Full functionality, Limited data." You can access a drawing of a bar joist, for example. It exports a DWG or DXF file with layers based on line weights. The interface is pretty clear; you don't have to read any instructions to start using it. The CD actually has all of the data, but you have to pay another $425 online to "unlock" it. That could be a bargain, but I suspect that most firms will feel that their own detail library is more applicable to the work they do. Still, $425 represents less than a day's worth of billable hours. Every architect knows the value of this book, and most every architecture firm (in the U.S. anyway) will want at least one copy just to stay current, and because the old one is getting worn out. You might as well get it now, and decide on the CD-ROM later. I'd love to have a special edition set with each page ever published in all of the AGS books, or even just the last 3 or 4. I'd give that 6 stars.
Recently, after practicing architecture for 20 years, I was suckered back by publisher Wiley's siren song of how the new tenth edition is new, informative, refreshing, up to date, etc. Fooled again. Sure, the Graphic Standards is a fair source of information, but I question the editors' judgement as to what is worth publishing between the wonderfully bound front and rear cover. For example, look up "R-value" in the index and you are directed to 55 words on page 486 how R-value relates to windows and that it's the inverse of U-values. Nothing on the R-value of all exterior skin construction materials or how the R-value relates poorly to thermal massing materials. These things should be very important to architects and are disappointingly absent from the Graphic Standards. However, if you ever need to know what a Zamboni looks like, or need to know the dimensions required for a rodeo barrel race, this is your book! Want an entire page showing ten pieces of gymnastics equipment (pg. 777) or how to draw an ellipse using pen or pencil (pg.999)? Seek no more. Twenty four pages of kitchen utensils and garden tools are still there. This is the best place to find loads of pages of barely useful information of dubious worth. Once the editors of Graphic Standards discover that a meaningful discussion on R-values in building materials deserves more space than the dimensions of a belt sander, then I might reconsider purchasing a later edition, but I won't hold my breath. Oh, one more thing, for you architects out there working on a Macintosh platform, the accompanying CD-ROM is useless.

I have been a practicing Interior Designer for eighteen years and There is a section on Wood Veneers and Flooring with (12) pages of beatiful and informative color plates! There is even a Color Theory (color plate) section that is very useful! There is so much useful information and reference in this book, that any Designer or Architect should have it close by and keep a watchful eye on it, so that colleagues do not borrow it indefinitely!!
The construction details and associated text provide credible options for the integration of construction and finish materials into interior spaces. The notes and sidebar comments add valuable information to the images and tables. IGS covers many topics not typically included in interiors reference books. Issues of life safety, detailed interior construction, specialty construction, and basic MEP systems are clearly described. The description and graphics describing interior materials testing are very informative, as are the sections on doors and hardware. This book is appropriate for entry-level or seasoned professionals, and is valuable for architects as well as interior designers!
In short, IGS offers an extensive amount of information in one volume. Its like one stop shopping without leaving the office. I encourage all Contractors, Designers and Artists to reference this book, whether you intend to design a table, a house or a museum. ... Read more | |

Bright yellow and bright blue are the traditional colors of Provence and we've used them in our home for everything from the kitchen tiles to the wash on the stone exterior to the fabric that covers our furniture. Like many of the homes in the book, we've let old timber beams remain exposed and a jumble of copper pots and pans, as well as fresh herbs from our garden, hang on a pot rack in our kitchen. Like the farmhouses in the book, our house has huge stone fireplaces in the living room, the bedroom and the kitchen. We've learned to use these fireplaces the way they should be used and I'm sure they'll come in very handy this winter (here in the mountains of Provence, it gets cold, unlike the warmer winter temperatures of the coast). THE PROVENCAL HOUSE not only explores traditional farmhouses like ours, it details town houses and manor houses as well and you can find a wealth of styles to choose from, from traditional to very contemporary (the traditional, however, has been my choice). You don't have to be a resident of Provence like I am to enjoy THE PROVENCAL HOUSE. Francophiles in other countries can learn how to decorate their homes in the Provencal style, a style that is both comfortable and lovely. I love this book. I've found it informative, helpful and a real joy just to look at.

The BOOK rates SIX STARS. The CD rates NO STARS. Get the book for half or a third the price of the CD. It's worth it. The cd contains many raster scans of tables from the book and links to commentary that you can find elsewhere in greater detail. The links to industry aren't anything special, considering you can find them many other places for free. The interface is clunky, and hard to read. Access to the data is read-only off the CD rather than allowing you to load it and access it from the hard drive. The vector CAD drawings are simplified and generic - suitable for instruction, but certainly not for real work. You won't save any time trying to use them for anything but reference, so why bother? This CD is worth 1% of its list price and should just come with the book at no cost. Don't be taken in by the hype.

Book Description For today's firms, best practice means putting the client first-and the new Handbook helps architects deliver. It begins with a brand-new section devoted to understanding client motivation, thinking, processes, and values and to forging stronger client-architect relationships. Subsequent sections on business, delivery, and services offer a wealth of crucial "redefinition" knowledge and tools for designing, building, and maintaining a successful practice-from business planning and project management to the development of expanded, added-value services. Also included are samples of the AIA contract documents (more than 75 in all), now accessible electronically onCD-ROM. Compiled by a team of experts from architecture as well as law, business, and other professions, the thirteenth edition of The Architect's Handbook of Professional Practice remains an authoritative reference for high-quality professional practice. In a convenient book/CD-ROM format, the Handbook offers architects the information they need to meet the changing demands of the marketplace with insight and confidence." Reviews (1)

Book Description Reviews (2)
My take on GERAM - having suffered through more approaches to architecture than I care to relate, some good and some bad, the GERAM approach is a beacon of sanity. First, it logically and clearly divides architecture into domains, which are interconnected as follow: (1) Generalized enterprise reference architecture (high-level model for integration) employs an enterprise modeling methodology that uses enterprise modeling language(s). The language(s) are implemented as enterprise engineering tools, which are used to develop enterprise models, which are, in turn, used to design operational systems. (2) Also feeding into the enterprise modeling tools are: partial enterprise models, which are supported by general enterprise modeling concepts, and directly support enterprise modeling tools. (3) Finally, there are 'Enterprise Modules', comprised of processes, staff resources, and technology, which are the basis for implementing the operational system. From the above, which is hard to visualize in a text description, one can see that GERAM is a pick and choose model that has a great deal of flexibility. It's not a perfect model, but it's also not rigid, which is the reason I like it so. With the context provided above, the book addresses GERAM in five parts, each of which contains relevant articles: Part I Architecture Frameworks, is a well stated and illustrated of GERAM and how it maps to other architecture frameworks. Part II Strategy Making and Business Planning, covers business aspects ranging from corporate strategy to developing the business model, to developing the enterprise concept and associated business plan. Part III Defining the Requirements for Enterprise Change, provides a focus on modeling. Part IV Developing the Master Plan, steps you through the design phase. Part V consists of four case studies that reinforce the preceding parts of this book. Do you need yet another architecture approach? The answer is, it depends. I do not view GERAM as much a distinct architecture approach as much as it's an approach to architecture. I believe that it can be applied - in part or in its entirety - to any architecture model because of the inherent flexibility. I certainly believe that this book is an essential resource for any enterprise architect because of the way it separates key elements of an architecture.
