5-0 out of 5 stars an excellent research source
I recently used this book for a research report on number symbolism. While becoming familiar with the text, I realized that the book contained extensive information on all symbols. After the report, I decided to purchase the book for future reference. Mr. Cooper did an outstanding and comprehensive job researching all types of symbols. Furthermore, by dividing his analysis of each symbol into different cultures, comparing and contrasting meaning was simple. I am indebted to this excellent reference source.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the most thorough dictionary of symbols.
J.C. Cooper's Dictionary of Symbols is the most thorough dictionary of symbology available. For its cultural diversity, clarity, and fairness of discourse it is without parallel. Cooper has been meticulous in her researches providing perspectives from all relevant fields of mysticism. Illustrations are classic rendering an ancient perspective on timeless themes. The dictionary also avoids gendre exclusive language in general while remaining faithful to original systems of belief. A most invaluable source for any work related to symbology, signs, iconic references, religious motifs and philosophical research to name a handful of endeavours that would benefit from Cooper's work. She is without peer in terms of having produced a reference guide that will be used long into the next millenium. A solid, integral piece of scholarship. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Delicious gift for the artist or art lover!
As an artist, I appreciated this large reference on many levels. First, it's alphabetical layout is interesting as it tends to lend equal weight to each artist be they Rembrandt or Frida Kahlo. Next, the hundreds of beautiful color reproductions on almost every page, short bios on the artist, the movement he or she was involved in; made me want to investigate lesser known artists. Great for the student of art or art history! I recommend this highly. Pull up a cozy chair and enjoy. ... Read more

Book Description

A beautifully illustrated coffee table art book that weaves its way through the art and mythology of The Da Vinci Code, this book is an art guide to unlocking The Da Vinci Code. Beautiful illustrations and insightful narratives guide the reader through the art and mythology and make us feel we are privy to the keys that unlock the secrets of The Da Vinci Code.

If you are like most readers, you mentally visualize the people, scenery, architecture, and objects described in whatever text you are perusing. The idea for this companion book to Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code was conceived by readers who, like you, do just that. Although they had created their own imaginary images to supplement their reading of this best selling novel, they wanted to actually see the images described and used to develop the plot. The Art and Mythology of the Da Vinci Code, by David Morris, provides the opportunity to do exactly that.It offers photographs of all the major buildings, landmarks, art and mythology referenced in Dan Brown's best selling novel. The images are presented in the order that the theological references, theories, and clues are provided to solve the mystery.Whether you are reading the novel because it's a great mystery or because you are intrigued by the theological hypotheses, this volume will exponentially enrich the experience. If you have already read the novel, this volume will allow you to revisit the art and mythology and perhaps expand your knowledge of them. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Highly Important Book
That this book is back in print is a gift to the world. It's a completely thorough and wonderful trip through various 2d and 3d geometries and patterns. The drawings can be appreciated just on an aesthetic level, or can be delved into deeply. A rare book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rank 5 is the highest order in Amazon's space
I hope as well that these words would reach Dr. Critchlow.

When I was a kid, I always used to search my dad's architectural library, and of the most to my interest was / and still is the Islamic Patterns. I'm a physician, researcher and a statistician now in which I deal with, and on a daily basis, high dimensional data structure in the medical data mining / knowledge discovery research area looking for logical patterns.

What I like the most about the author's stile is his logical inference from start to end. It's a pure mathematical art that could possibly be used into solving solutions in hierarchical data structure.

The book offers very unique and useful 4 appendices on arrangement of the elements of spatial order, multiple 1-2-3 etc. order filling solids, definitions and the 12 df.

It's a job well done that can be used universally.

5-0 out of 5 stars Compares with M Wilcox book
Helpful, providing definitive information on the behavior of the paint, accurate color photos, and information in disagreement with Wilcox's book--i.e. the color Opera by Holbien as a "permanent" color. (Color rec. by E. John Robinson). Useful when picking between different manufacturers, especially with online shopping.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent investment for watercolorists
This book is great! It explains everything you want to know about the nature and behavior of pigments. Hilary does a superb job of rating the quality of each paint manufacturer's products. Her information is accurate and very useful. I now understand a great deal more about the paints I'm using. After buying this book I changed my pallet to single pigment paints and no longer mix mud. I no longer waste money on dissapointing tubes of color.
Of all the books on watercolor I've read and own, this one has become my bible!

4-0 out of 5 stars very good for the artist to save money
As I am interested in the scientific end of things when studying color, I bought this book with a view to study what the author had to say about it. Being the medium is watercolor, a paste ready for painting with a brush mixed with water, the colors are indeed going to be different from that of other mediums. The author has done a tremendous job by detailing the different brands and rating them in terms of their lightfastness, whether they "stain" (have staying power for color in a painting) or not. I would term this book the "Consumer's Report of Watercolor Colors". So often, most books on color theory concentrate on one aspect of color, such as graphics on film or web graphics, and forget that different mediums mix color differently. For instance, someone involved with oil painting would need a different book on mixing color, as that is a different medium altogether. Also, there is no standardization of color among the various manufacturers of paints, and it makes it very difficult for the artist to know just what to buy. "Amber green" from one manufacturer could be very different from an "amber green" from another manufacturer, and vice versa, the same color could have different names from different manufacturers. The reason I am not giving it five stars, is that this point about color standardization is driven home better by an John Wilcox, another author on color and watercolor. Otherwise, this is a very good book for the discerning watercolorist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilary's Guide to WC Paints has saved me hundreds of dollars
This book was the best money I have ever spent on art related books and supplies combined. It pays for itself many many times over in the savings you will reap from learning the good paints from the trash paints. I wouldn't think of buying a tube of paint without first referencing this book. I think of it as an artists' "bible" because of all the frustration, dissapointment, and heartache it has saved me as well! It's a must for the beginner and professional alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you paint watercolors, you need this book...
It will save you mucho money. A complete, comprehensive test of colors from a wide range of major manufacturers of watercolor, this book lists the lightfastness and handling characteristics of each color. But that's not all. You get reflectance curves, mixing potential, transparency, lifting, staining, granularity and other properties of pigments. (But it is fun to read, as the information is presented in a very accessible form)

Never buy a horrid tube of chalky, weak, miscolored, fugitive paint again. Plenty more in this book, including history and even chemistry. Hilary Page is a fantastic author, teacher and painter. Get this book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete for a beginner ...
I recently purchased this text along with Janson's History of Art (5th ed.). Although this handbook was written with Janson's 6th edition in mind, it has not taken away from my cross-referenced learning experience. Throughout the text, there are references to examples (illustrations) in History of Art (or other popular art history texts) which help in applying the "theory" (if you can call it that) with the "application."

The text has a wide range of art terms key to the study and analysis of art history. The section on Christian subjects, signs and symbols has helped me decipher the icons depicted in Christian-themed pieces of the Renaissance.

My copy of the text is bound somewhat backwards towards the end. The Index and Artist Chronology pages, for example, are divided and unordered ... but it does not take away from the text's usablity!

All in all, I believe this text has been a great investment.

5-0 out of 5 stars From Abacus to Zeus
In Abacus to Zeus, you will find a wonderful, concise, approachable 'quick and dirty' reference for those new to studying the visual arts. James Pierce brings together many of the pesky, essential--and formerly, ellusive--details in an accessible reference. Deffinitions with illustrations, terms and stories of mythology, religious art,and a chronology of artists and architects (complete with pronunciation guide--indespensible for those of us who remain unilingual) work well together to make this book a find! ... Book Description

Childe Hassam (1859--1935) created an immense body of work in the Impressionist style, comprising oil paintings, watercolors, pastels, and prints. His distinctive and enchanting images, with their focus on effects of color and light, are widely admired and are included in the collections of every major museum in the United States. In this handsomely illustrated book, the authors, all experts in the field, take a fresh look at Hassam's responses to his vibrant and complicated era. Their texts study his striking portrayals of cities and country sites in America and Europe. Also explored are his late works-those completed after 1900-when Hassam felt increasingly challenged by both modern life and modern art. These include tranquil interior vignettes, iconic images of New England churches, and his great Flag series. Hassam's life and career in Boston, New York, Paris, New England, and East Hampton as well as his travels are covered in fresh and insightful chapters. Essays on more specific subjects focus on Hassam's pride in his ancestry; his interest in architecture, gardens and allegorical themes; his accomplishments as a watercolorist and printmaker; his frames; the marketing of his art; and the contemporary critical response to it. The book, which also contains a chronology of Hassam's career and a comprehensive exhibition chronology, accompanies the first major museum retrospective of Hassam's works since 1972. Childe Hassam, American Impressionist examines this great artist's work in the context of his credo that "the man who will go down to posterity is the man who paints his own time and the scenes of every-day life around him." ... 1-0 out of 5 stars They Left Out 9 Years...
This self-proclaimed 20th century encyclopedia of American Folk Art came out in 1991... how could it be a comprehensive look at the century's folk art in America when 9 years didn't even happen when they wrote this? There are artists left out and what is written is often slanted with regards to "collectability" since the authors' have invested in a large folk art collection. The emphasis is often that the early work is really the only inspired work. Once an artist is "discovered" by the public the art is no longer as good so you should only have the early pieces, like the ones in the encyclopedia. This bias also occurs in the author's book on Collecting American Folk Art. But really, the big flaw in this book is that it was written 9 years before the end of the century and has left out many worthwhile artists. A very disappointing book.

2-0 out of 5 stars makes a good doorstop
no information is better than bad information. a new emerging field of art deserves a better book than this. it is very misleading to call it "the encyclopedia", for many artists are left out who were very well documented at the time of its publication. it doesn't seem that the people who wrote the bios and info were very well informed, or perhaps they were just showing their bias.the editor(s) should not have allowed that to happen. it does have some nice pictures of artists, but the quality of the art leaves alot to be desired. who decided which artists were included? i am surprised that a museum would put their name on such a publication.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great information, photographys and interviews

5-0 out of 5 stars Making Watercolors
Harrison defines and employs standard language used in identifying watercolor effects. She also identifies watercolor usages and materials and is consistent in this regard. Her illustrative material is literally a survey of the watercolor world, with no histrionics, from abstraction to the tightest realism. It is a beautiful book and gratifyingly complete. She has no 'method' to push. With her insistence on planning as the key to realizing one's concept, she leaves the reader in peace to enjoy the experience the book offers of seeing how accomplished watercolorists plan their work.
The index is excellent. I will admit disappointment that Harrison touches only lightly on the qualities of now very expensive materials that would enable one to make useful choices. Her remarks on paper by type and maker I find useful and I wish this knowledgeable woman had given the reader more insights on other materials.

1-0 out of 5 stars Almost half of this book is a reprint of a previous edition.
Some years ago I purchased the previous edition of this book and found it very useful. When I saw what appeared like a new edition of this book I decided to purchase it. On the cover it is marked REVISED AND UPDATED. The techniques are described well and most are new material but Part 2 - Themes is exactly the same as the first edition and this was very disappointing and will make me think carefully about purchasing a book unless I can view it in a bookshop.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not my favorite book however
You might find it useful. If you can only have a few watercolor books, and you are short on technical experience, this might be just the thing for you. But if you are looking for a lot of creative inspiration rather than technique, this isn't so useful. I wasn't inspired by the contents, but the techniques are certainly ones that I do use.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book that shows how to master the art of watercolor
I was requested by my editors to write the introduction to the Brazilian edition of this book and immediately accepted, because, unlike o most books on art techniques, Hazel Harrison concentrates on demonstrating how to master all the resources and effects that watercolor offers, without implying that there is any preferable way in which to paint. The techniques are clearly explained and well illustrated and, in the second part of the book, she includes many examples of how different artists used the effects described in the first part to interpret various subjects. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to master the art of watercolor. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but dated
The good news is that this is probably the best book available on the materials of sculpture. The bad new is that it was written twenty years ago. (This paperback edition may have been published in 1988, but AFAIK, the text was unchanged from the original 1983 version.)

If you are interested in traditional forms, then this book probably covers everything you need. But if you want information on any materials and/or techniques that came into use post-1970's, you're out of luck. Plastics are a good example: urethane and silicone molding rubbers are given a cursory mention, even though they are quite common now. I don't think polyurethane casting resins (Por-a-kast, Poly 15, etc.) or polyurethane glues (Gorilla Glue, ProBond, etc.) are mentioned at all.

The wood section is surprisingly thin, with a bias toward subtractive methods (carving), even though wood construction is as common--if not more common--in contemporary work.

While there are plenty of photos (all black and white) of classic sculptures, there are a lot of unbelievably bad pieces illustrated--probably chosen for their materials rather than quality. Some are downright hideous.

This is a good resource, but be aware that it is no longer comprehensive.

5-0 out of 5 stars supurb book that covers both modern and antique materials
This is a supurb reference book for a working sculptor. It covers stone and wood carving, as well as most major 20th century materials, from plastics to masonry to metal fabrication techniques. Nothing on fabrics or paper though. The illustrations are exciting and fairly thorough, with an emphasis is on innovative work. This is the one book I would want to take with me if shipwrecked on a desert island! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful, but time for a new edition
I find the book very useful for many purposes, and it was right on the mark when it came out four years ago. However, considering how quickly technology and the internet change, I think it's time for a new edition; a lot of the "digital design" information is woefully out of date. For instance, under "Questions to ask when designing a web site," the book asks, "Does the client understand the difference between the Web and an online e-mail service such as American (cq) Online?"

In addition, pricing is based on "screens" or "pages" for web sites. The overall rates in the book seem to be realistic, but it would be helpful to know exactly how projects are priced. In the rapidly evolving world of database-driven and fully animated sites, "pages" don't mean much anymore. This is a fine reference, but don't expect it to keep you on the cutting-edge of technology. Go into a client's office and talk about "American Online" and I can almost guarantee you won't get the job!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Resource Guide
The GAG Handbook rates high on my list of must have resources for the novice graphic designer. The information is valuable in setting standards for pricing and ethics in the Graphic Design industry. As an educator I recommend this book to all my graphic design students for the print graphics and web graphics information. The benefit to the novice is the contracts that have been well written specifically for a large number of specializations within the industry.

4-0 out of 5 stars the best of what's available
Pros: Covers a lot of ground; defined creative terms and boundaries for the profession, fees, moral issues, client relationships, salaries, photographer relationships, illustrator relationships, etc. Rare is the book that has the guts to put actual numbers on project fees, rarer still to see it in this field. The only guide of its kind available.

Cons: Shape/bindery of the piece. It's a pain to even open it wide. (This was designed by the guild?) Some of the fee quotes/ideas are too vague, to the point of offering little guidance. The flow of the chapters is odd. Example: It starts with illustrator relationships(?!), when you'd think the first chapter would be an overall state of industry, issues facing communication arts employees and employers, trends, etc. The section on digital/non traditional media is still a little shaky, but better than it was.

Last thoughts: To the review that said they need a new version, they've done two in the last 3 or 4 years. The most recent being 2003. To everyone else: it's a guide, not a law book. The prices are at once too high and too low. Fees/salaries will vary no matter how accurate it is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Updated again and more useful than ever!
The 11th edition is out,(although Amazon may not be displaying the most recent cover) and they did it again. The Graphic Artists Guild has produced the definitive industry resource for designers, illustrators and anyone even remotely interested in making a living in the graphics field. The book provides a terrific introduction to professional practices for anyone expanding their existing business to include web projects. This is a publication that keeps improving with age. Trying to encapsulate all situations is impossible, but the care taken in putting this survey together shows. Ta da! Even the web design section catches up to the situation on the ground.

At first glance it seems slimmer than previous editions, but a deeper look reveals that more information makes it onto each page, with a more efficient typographic treatment, and some judicious editing deleting duplicate information in some chapters

Please note: The prices reported in the book are the results of a survey of real working professionals. A spot check reveals that some reported price ranges have increased over the intervening years since the 10th edition. Some are the same, or similar. In the end, the producer (that's you!) has to insist on higher prices, you can't expect a book to negotiate for you, can you?

Some of the charts are improved. For instance, the Chart and Map Design section is more useful, including ranges for 4 different possible uses for a piece: advertising, in-house, editorial and textbook. this replaces the not-always-useful "client annual revenues" breakdowns in the 10th edition.

In the age of easy image stealing a new cease and desist form letter is included on p. 250 for you to use. May you never need it!

Hats off to the Guild for putting facts and figures at every working graphic artists disposal. It's a lumbering, exploding field where standards are in short supply on the fringes, but solid guidance is only a bookshelf away. I'll say it again... If you're unsure about what to charge, or how to structure an agreement (you're using an agreement aren't you?), it'll pay for itself with your next job.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Unreal Pricing Guidlines
I found that the prices given in this book were way off for my demographic and line of work. With the knowledge of bidding my own freelance jobs and hiring designers for the firm that I work for that the pay scales in this book are way out of wack. I'm not saying that they are all over priced like other readers might assume. I found that many estimates to be quite low.

You run the risk of losing a job because your bidding estimate is to high in some instances and in other given estimates you are going to lose a lot of money. The given freelance hourly rate for an Art Director is $55.00. That is way under what the market pays in the area and industry that I work in.

You will also find pricing like this: National advertising campaign (Print Media) between $11,000-$25,000. There are no specific variables given to this enormous disparity in pricing.

There is a heap of useful information in this book, but pricing isn't one of them. In fact it's bloody useless. ... Read more

Book Description

In the twentieth century, avant-garde artists from Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean created extraordinary and highly innovative paintings, sculptures, assemblages, mixed-media works, and installations. This innovative book presents more than 250 works by some seventy of these artists (including Gego, Joaquín Torres-García, Xul Solar, and José Clemente Orozco) and artists’ groups, along with interpretive essays by leading authorities and newly translated manifestoes and other theoretical documents written by the artists. Together the images and texts showcase the astonishing artistic achievements of the Latin American avant-garde.

The book focuses on two decisive periods: the return from Europe in the 1920s of Latin American avant-garde pioneers; and the expansion of avant-garde activities throughout Latin America after World War II as artists expressed their independence from developments in Europe and the United States. As the authors explain, during these periods Latin American art was fueled by the belief that artistic creations could present a form of utopia—an inversion of the original premise that drove the European avant-garde—and serve as a model for a new society.

As an insightful source for new ideas about the nature and function of modern art, Inverted Utopias is an essential book that will become a classic text in the field.
