5-0 out of 5 stars Part-time wedding photographer
I found this an easy read, and very helpful. What I liked about the book it was not just by one photographer, but many. Each one brought to the book their point of view about wedding Photojournalism, and how they do it. I'm starting to do weddings in this style, so it was nice to hear how the real pros shoot them.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hmmm...
I'd be very dubious about buying a book on wedding photojournalism when the book features 2 out of 3 shots that are obviously posed ( the front cover and the flying bride/nun ). I've seen some Amherst Media books and they're pretty low-end and very traditional ie cheesy, buy Bambi Cantrell and Stephen Swain instead, and chech out www.jeffascough.com and www.yervant.com for two of the best wedding photogs around.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Very Informative Book, I've read it before my first wedding shoot and It helped me a lot, the pictures are amazing as well. One thing I realy like about it is, most of the pictures are done with a digital slr.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cutting Edge
I waited months for the release of this book, and it was worth it. One of the best modern photography books available. Informative, inspirational a pleasure to read. Recommended for photographers, pros and beginners. If you are looking to spice up your wedding photography this is the book for you. You will learn cutting edge techniques and tips to capture magazine quality photographs. This is not a 'traditional' photography book. Lots of pictures inside. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome book
I have been printing and toning for quite a few years but have been surprised at what a lot this book still had to teach me!

All other books on this subject that I have read have been sadly short on vital details. This book is a superb exception to this common fault. The information is a model of clarity and easy to understand both for beginners and seasoned printers like me. The images are a great bonus too as they not only instruct but inspire. I am so grateful to this author for this lovely book and the great amount of work that obviously went into it, and for sharing this information in such an unselfish way. An awesome book - thank you.
H.K.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best yet
The best Rudman book yet and by far the best available on Toning. At last a toning book that takes me both wide and deep, with beautiful pictures into the bargain.

I agree with the photoeye review - this is definately one of the best technical photo books I have seen. It is easy to read and yet tells all (unlike so many!!)

I love the way it teaches at different levels from novice to expert - why can't all teaching books be like this?

A great book ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great stuff
After reading previous reviews, I was a little chagrined when my book arrived and it was so thin, but after reading it, my reservations were gone. Of course, the photography was stunning; In addition to being an excellent technical manual, the book would be great as a "coffee table" book. The information was well presented and thorough. On the issue of "bias" toward Canon equipment, Morris is up front regarding his Canon contract, but does not hesitate to point out some features that other makers make available, but Canon lacks. My only resevation with book is a dearth of information on filters; Other than that, this book is an *excellent* primer on bird (and nature, in general,) photography. Well worth the money; I'm sure I will refer to this book many times in the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Cream of the Crop
I own every bird photgraphy book that Amazon lists and this is by far the most useful - and I say that even though I am a Nikon photographer. Beyond the basics, Morris emphasizes exposure, sharpness, composition. He is a good teacher. Moreover, he walks the talk. If you put all the bird photography books on a table and just looked at the pictures, Morris's photos would stand out from the rest in every respect: sharpness, "snap", color balance, compostion, and the sense that they were captured at the critical moment.

A warning to all you digital photographers! Morris shoots film. When you see what he achieves with it, you will be tempted to take your old film body out of the closet and phone New York for a rush order of 20 cartridges of Fuji Velvia.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic !
If you only ever read one book about bird photography, then let it be this one.

I have many wildlife photography books in my library, but this is the one that I refer to time and time again.

Arthur Morris covers everything from equipment, lighting and composition to exposure.

Highly recommended. Please visit his website at [URL] for a wealth of information. Arthur Morris also now provides a 'pocket guide to exposure', details of which are on the website. It is a real gem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but with strong brand bias
What the other reviewers have said is true. This is an outstanding book on bird photography. It also contains outstanding photos. The closest thing to a weakness with the book is the strong association and support Morris has with Canon products. I'm a Canon person myself, but I sometimes wonder about equipment advice Morris gives in his book or his fine website at birdsasart, because of his contract connection with Canon.
Despite my whining on this subject, the book is excellent if you want to learn about photographing birds. It includes a review of the basic principles of any type of photography, then goes on to give very detailed information on techniques of photographing birds. In addition to camera use, there is good information on tripods, stalking techniques, and some bird photography hotspots around US and Canada.
An excellent book, even for non-Canon shooters! I gather that it is being released in a paperback edition now, which will be a better value.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really Good Stuff
Starting out into the world of photographing birds? This is a book that will really help you. I have read it a number of times cover to cover. And even while it is bulky, I have taken it on trips to read the night before I went out. Lots of tips and well written. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!
Gary Gladstone's book Corporate & Location Photography is just......WOW! His careful and generous way of sharing his intensive knowledge of photography, lighting and techniques, and his detailed descriptions of all phases of location and corporate photography is impressive.

Any photographer from amateur to pro will find this book irreplaceable. It is packed full of ingenious tips, invaluable advice and inspiring, new ideas that every photographer can benefit from.

This book goes with me EVERYWHERE. Gary, thank you for sharing!

5-0 out of 5 stars Gary Gladstone has gone above and beyond the call in writing
Amazon delivered this purchase on time and as promised. After opening CORPORATE & LOCATION PHOTOGRAPHY I could not set it down. Experience counts in this business and Gary has communicated that experience to the Nth degree. The chapter showing and telling about his "Road Kit" is worth the price of the book alone. Any photographer worth his salt recognizes the value received exceeds the cost of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book about being a PROFESSIONAL
Gary Gladstone has taken the art of being a good photographer and crafted a book on how to be a successful professional photographer. Its not enought to take good photos, and this book shows you what else you need if you are thinking about making money, and not just spending it, in pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the Stuff They Don't Teach In Schools!
This is just a wonderful book for anybody building a business as a freelance photographer. Gary tells you the inside stuff that many pros even keep from their assistants. The book loaded with real world examples of how problems get solved and how to steer your job planning to keep from getting in trouble later. If you're going to shoot outside your studio, then this book should put your mind at ease with strategies. He walks you through real problems with examples of how to avoid or get out of jams.

Gladstone teaches how to think your way through a job. The chapter on assistants is a much read if you're thinking of starting that way.

The visuals are great! Makes you want to run out and start shooting. I just love this book. Thanks Gary.

3-0 out of 5 stars WATCH OUT!!!!
I'm a begginer in this field, there is no doubt this is a good book. But, if you are a begginer too, don't buy this one, because it has just 30 pages for "TRICKS & HINTS" out of 160. There are a lot of photographs, but it is a shame there is no explanation on what lences, nor films, nor speed shutter, etc. he is using.
He only talks about "HOW TO DO BUSSINESS", it is good, and about dealing with people (your assistant, your clients), this is usefull too.
By the other hand, I don't think it is more usefull how to packing your equipement than how to take a good photograph.
So, the title of the book has got nothing to do with the content. WATCH OUT!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must-have book for creating awesome polaroid transfer art
This is definitely a must-have book for anyone who wants to create incredible Polaroid transfer art. The instructions are excellent and the artwork wonderful. You will be amazed at the cool effects you can create with the remarkable property of certain Polacolor films that enable you to transfer the image or the emulsion layer carrying the image to a variety of other surfaces, such as paper, fabric, wood, etc.

The book starts by discussing the basic supplies needed including choosing the right printer and film. It then shows you both wet and dry methods for making image transfers. There is a great hints section that explains how varying things like heat, time before peeling or adding pressure can create different unique effects. There are instructions for both color and black & white emulsion transfers with a helpful troubleshooting section.

My favorite section, creative techniques, follows. It includes awesome effects like making multiple exposures, making a mosaic of multi transfers and getting a scrambled image from heating in the microwave. Next, the author creates dramatic artwork by hand coloring with a variety of media.

In the advanced techniques section you learn about the three different transfer methods: in-camera, projection printing and slide-printer. Filtration and color theory are also discussed here. The fine art section focuses on finishing off the artwork by framing, matting and protecting it. All instructions are step-by-step and accompanied by demonstrating photos.

In the back, there is a large inspirational gallery featuring the work of 20 different artists with background information on the artist and his/her techniques, giving the book a personal touch. A complete resource directory, book and publication list and contact information for all the artists are also included. Get this boo; it is fantastic.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good 'how to' book.
I wish all 'how to' books were as good as "Polaroid Transfers".

Kathleen Thormod Carr knows her stuff. I would venture to say that anyone who reads the book cover to cover, assembles the necessary equipment (not a lot), and spends a rainy day indoors on this project will get good results before the day is through.

Just know that although her techniques are obvious and easy to follow, your own polaroid images will have a life of their own.

I suspect that 'Carr's First Law' should be that "the worst pictures will transfer easiest". Good luck with your best images.

Buy the book. Read it twice. Make some excellent transfers. Impress your friends. :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars Very well constructed
This should be in every Alternative Artists(Photographer) library. Well written, excellent examples and very comprehensive. You should be able to flourish in the medium after experiencing this book. Kathleen has consolidated a concise book that brings it all together. A value to all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great information and images
Very useful book for those of you starting out with image transfer or emulsion. Easy to read with a great artist section.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wearing Mine Out
Whenever I get ready to work on Polaroid transfers or lifts, I have this book by my side. I refer to it all the time. I took a class in these processes, but when I get ready to work, this is the book I refer too.

Great inspiration and examples are included, but MOST valuable for the step-by-step instructions. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Single vision, not single minded
As a professional photographer in the throes of a major repositioning effort, Selina's book provides valuable insight into how to carve out a single vision in 15 to 18 images, wrapped, packaged or otherwise presented in a way that supports that vision. The book doesn't pull any punches. It isn't for the on-the-fence photographer. If you want to win, you have to play to win. There is an investment in time, in money and in patience...none of which are particularly pleasant when faced with the uncertainty of a complex and ever-competitive market. My only disagreement with her - and the reason I rated the book 4 out of 5 stars - is because I feel that the biggest obstacle to getting an assignment is not knowing the right people. Salina thinks it's all about the work. I have found that my biggest assignments came from contacts in the industry. All of us who work on a national level are technically proficient, and most of us are bright, talented and driven. Yes, our styles cover the broadest spectrum imaginable, but what really seperates us is our contacts. With the onset of digital, photography as we once knew it is history. And that's the dirty little secret of this business...If it isn't perfect, we'll fix it in photoshop. My suggestion to anyone entering this field is to network like your life depended on it. Believe me, it's where the line in the sand is drawn.

5-0 out of 5 stars Required reading
Regardless of whether you are a professional, student and/or considering a career in photography, this is one of the few books that you can learn from today and in the future. With more than 25 years as a consultant to professionals, Selina has the experience and vision to show photographers how a sellable portfolio can be created: from selecting a visual point of view image selection, editing images, sequencing & all the way to portfolio case selection. The marriage of: concepts, text and photos are presented logically and in a way that makes the information easy to understand and apply. If you really want to succede in today`s market, then this is the book you need to begin your journey.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is like a glass of water in the desert
Most commercial photographers know about Selina Oppenheim, but only a lucky few make the investment to hire her for her expertise in portfolio development and refining your vision as a photographer. Even though hiring Selina as a consultant was one of the best decisions I have made as a photographer, I still wanted to read her book to make sure I hadn't missed anything she has to say about marketing myself as a photographer. I can say from personal experience that this book distills the essence of her one-on-one consulting. This book is really, really worth learning from.

5-0 out of 5 stars A clear, succinct vision based portfolio guidebook.
Selina Oppenheim is one of the premier creative consultants in the photography industry. Although no single book could possibly encompass her 25+ years of portfolio building and marketing experience, Portfolios That Sell gives you the opportunity to dive into her portfolio building process that she's used to develop so many exceptional photographers portfolios. It clearly and succinctly lays out the step-by-step process that you can follow to develop your own vision based portfolio. The photos that Selina chose to use as examples work well and will both guide you and encourage you to create new portfolio visuals.

5-0 out of 5 stars "An invaluable resource." Karen Frank, Photo Ed. O Magazine.
This book is an invaluable resource, an absolute essential for the photographer creating his portfolio for the first time, and a gift to the more seasoned photographer hoping to resposition or recreate herself. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for any Serious B&W Photographer
Ansel Adams reviews the characteristics and limitations of the B&W negative. It is very comprehensive and describes both exposure and processing techniques. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is serious about B&W photography.

4-0 out of 5 stars The complex negative
I was really interested in getting to the bottom of how Adams has developed his Zone system for exposure control. My photography instructor had alluded to it's complexities. The book explains a huge range of technical details and the thinking behind them really clearly.

For those of us shooting in 35mm some of the lessons cannot be put into practice directly because pushing or pulling is limited to whole rolls of film rather than individual frames. However the insights are really valuable.

I recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
After read this book,my B&W photograph expose have imporve dramatically, before that,I just using average meter to optain exposure.good book

5-0 out of 5 stars Lessons from the Master in Technique
Simply put: The best out there.

Make sure of a few things:
a)you are an advanced amateur
b)you love B&W
and it woundn't hurt if
c)you can do your own B&W work.

Wonderfully written, if you have the talent this book could make the difference

5-0 out of 5 stars The Negative is all Positive
This is the book I turn to for the heavy duty technical data on the most important aspects of photography, but guess what? This is probably one of the most readable and easy to digest technical books on photography you are ever likely to read or need. Adams has a way of making mysterious worlds within Photography accessable. I will admit though that this book is not for the absolute beginner, though having said that those who want to stretch a little could find much that is of use without having too much knowledge off the mark.

When I looked at the three books of this series, The Camera, The Negative and the Print, I waded into each wanting to choose only the best one from the series. I quickly realised that neither of the other two had what The Negative had and I have subsequently realised that this was by far the best choice for me. The negative deals with Visualization and image values, Light and Film, Exposure, The Zone System, Filters and Pre-Exposure, Natural Light, Artifical Light, Darkroom processes, Dark Room equiptment and procedures and value control in processing.

This book is an absolute must for intermediate photographers who have mastered the basics and want to take a step up into the world of greater control over their imaging with an eye to developing and processing their own film and prints. Everything you need to know about getting your images right before you even hit the shutter is in this book, all you need to do now is accentuate the positive by going and buying The NEGATIVE! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great if you want to learn Photoshop Elements
I bought this book about 3 weeks prior to purchasing Photoshop Elements and began studying it before using the program. After loading the software, I was editing photos that evening and accomplishing remarkable techniques within 3 days. This is more than a re-writen instruction book- it is a step-by-step guide on how to accomplish 50 different, mostly easy projects that would have taken me weeks to figure out with the instruction manual alone. The results using Photoshop Elements, which is an exellent program, are outstanding.
If you want to use Photoshop Elements, wish to do more than just print snapshots, and want to unleash your full power of artistic license, buy this book.
The author also wrote "Digital Camera Solutions," which is an introduction to digital photography, and which I also enjoyed.

4-0 out of 5 stars 50 Fast Digital Photo Techniques by Gregory George
I have found the book very helpful in learning how to use Adobe Photoshop 5.0. Since I have the older program I needed references to learn the many basic techniques. This book is keyed to Adobe Photoshop Elements but has cross-referenced translation tables for various Adobe Photoshop versions (5.0-7.0) and other programs. I have completed 50% of the lessons so far and find the accompanied CD lessons aligned perfectly with the text. Easy to complete but require some familiarity with the older PS version commands. The text is clearly written and the author has done a great job in presenting the subject. I have two years of digital camera use and wanted to go beyond shoot and print photography. A great aid to me.
The text I purchased at Books a Million has 292 pages not 352 as listed in Amazon's product details and published by Hungry Minds.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best way
This is the best book to use to learn the essentials of how to use Photoshop Elements for beginners. You can't go wrong if your are getting started with digital photography and printing if you spend a few nights going through these excercises.

3-0 out of 5 stars Outdated, with unpardonable omissions in tutorials.
After raving about this author's "50 Digital Camera Techniques" (see 5-star review), I bought what I hoped would be a great companion tutorial for processing digital images. What a disappointment! First, this book came out in 2001 (probably written in 2000) when Photoshop Elements (PSE) first saw light, and Windows XP still was a promise on the horizon. Of course we now have PSE version 2 (as well as XP); the "free trial software" on the CD, likewise, is badly outdated [PhotoImpact now is in ver 8, rather than ver 6 offered]. Not good, but not fatal thus far, because PSE commands haven't changed all that drastically in the new version [the former 'square marquee', for instance, now is named 'rectangular marquee']. But, really unpardonable, are the assumptions, errors and omissions in the tutorials themselves. In the first technique alone I found two inexcusable faults: (a) author blithely talks about 'options' that pop up in the 'options bar' when you select a tool - well, he just forgot to tell me to first turn on the 'options bar' in the Windows menu, so I had to go through the Help menus to learn that fact. (b) in adding a border to the bottom of the image, you are directed to the 'canvas size' dialog, where a complicated 3x3 grid just begs for explanation of 'anchor point', rather than for "getting the hang of it" all by myself. And, not so incidentally, if one wants to add a lower 0.25 bottom border to a 10" tall image, the proper new height is 10.25 -- not 10.75 as printed. Clearly, this book was written hastily and without thorough proof reading. Equally clearly, I stopped after chapter 1 to find a more compassionate tutor - PSE's Help topics and built-in tutorial will do quite nicely to get you started. The center-bound color plates, moreover, were a nice bonus in the digital camera book, but a minus in a photo-editing tutorial where color plates should appear right with the applicable text. Not the least, the black and white vignettes reproduce poorly on the pulpy (?recycled) paper. I may be overly harsh on this author, but he's shown that he CAN write a superb tutorial - let's hope the forthcoming second edition corrects the shortcomings of the first edition. Overall: a less than successful recipe collection, that rises to a decent cookbook on occasion. There must be better, and more current, tutorials around - I haven't found one yet.

I really can't recommend this book - the information is dated and succeeds in very few places. There's 50 examples here, but they're so elementary that you can't really call them "techniques". I think the "help" search menu in Elements could do the same job.

I bought this book hoping to learn some techniques to better my digital darkroom, but the book was so poorly organized and assembled, I was left feeling jipped. For example, the author might as well have left all the b&w example images off his pages - the center color examples are better, but really should've been intermixed with the corresponding chapters. I'd look at the example images and since they were in b&w, you often couldn't tell the difference between the before and after images.

Also, nearly 5-10 of his techniques are basically about applying filters. Ooh great, go to filter-sharpening - wabam. Thanks, but that's not why I thought I was buying the book.

Perhaps I'm being too harsh on this book, but I really can't escape the feeling that something just wasn't "right" with the way this book flowed. When I finished it, I felt it had low quality production value written all over it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is great book
In this book, Adams said Expression is more important than reality, idea more important than fact, the print more important than its subject. For it is only in the print that such magnificence can be unfailingly orchestrated. Those words made me think that what is good photograph. The book opens with a thoroughly enjoyable, albeit brief, history of photography before getting down to explain printing techniques.

The majority of the text concentrates it's efforts in educating the reader in the art of B&W photography. This book tells readers that what are good prints making techniques. After reading this book you will feel like that your printing skills are very improved. The reader will see many wonderful pictures as examples, that will surely create a better impression as to what type of pictures Adams takes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for advanced users, for beginners only.
Book is old, yes, it's old. Photos are shot no later then early 80's. Besides they are 20-30 years old, almost all photos are shot with low speed Agfa slide film. It's not fair, is it? I mean how many of you (us) shoot with slide films?
Book tells about everything but too little information on each topic, one page fro each topic. Dedicating only two pages (out of 420) to exposure is not what good photography book gives you, does it? Whatever is given, is given from technical point of view, not an artistic approach.
Book can be useful for someone who's making first steps in photography. Book is for basic knowledge, ABC's or even DEF's of photography. I was looking something like PQR's - wrong pick. I have to admit there are one or two nifty tricks explained, but that's it. If you're advanced amateur (no talk about pros) forget about this book. If you're beginner pick it and after squeezing all juices of it, give it to someone else, like I gave it to my wife who resently took camera into her hands.
Good luck!

4-0 out of 5 stars A great book for learning about your camera!
I found this book to be good for an amateur photographer or one who just needs a little more insight on photography. This book teaches the basics of the camera all the way up to composition. The book also goes a little bit into the real and digital darkroom. A good post-production chapter. Great book, I recomend this book to anyone wanting to know more about their camera and how to successfully use it.

5-0 out of 5 stars John Hedgecoe again and again it is brilliant!
My friend, I'm not a professional photographer , I'm amateur, I'm in love with photography and thankfully to John Hedgecoe books my joy of it greater and reacher then ever! John Hedgecoe is unique, he is unique in this way that after decades of his super successful carrier and after dozens of published book he still enjoy photography. He never publish things like "this soft box on the right and this on the right side". He intrigue you to experiment to make you own way, he teach you to see beauty, enjoy it and shoot it. I read his books as novels. I read it again and again because they clear, friendly and helpful. He like knowledgeable friend who helps you, who guides you and who loves you.
All photographers are sweet souls, because we love beauty, we looking, we hunting for it. And he still hunting for it despite time and experience, he's still not tired. You may have the simplest and cheapest camera but be encouraging you may take outstanding pictures and his books will help you to develop sense of harmony and improve your vision. if you are looking for book that will tell you "go there and do that" go elsewhere , it is not about it. But if you in the quest and would agree that it is always good to leave something to chance, to nature and to imagination you in the right place and John Hedgecoe is a right person to help you with that.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not worth updating older editions
Hedgecoe doesn't seem to have added much new knowledge to his previous editions of the Handbook of Photography. The photos and text are new, but at the same time, are pretty much the same.

If you have the older Knopf editions, stick with them. If you don't this book is still a good resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book to learn about photography in any format
I searched long and hard for a book that struck a balance between digital and traditional film, yet focused squarely on the aspects required to understand how a camera works in order take a great picture rather than spending time in the digital darkroom.

This book has delivered on both counts, and more.

Printed on beautifully thick and glossy paper, this book walks you page by page through all aspects of photography. Each page contains beautiful, full color photographs to illustrate the concepts being discussed on the page. Furthermore, each sample photograph details the focal length, f/stop and shutter speed used for the shot so you know exactly how the results were achieved.

If you're looking to move beyond point-and-shoot to take advantage of the creative aspects of your camera and willing to invest a little time to understand how your camera works, then I strongly recommend you grab this book. It is perfect for anyone looking to move from consumer to amateur, or from amateur to prosumer. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good intro to the art AND craft of Photoshop
In my experience, when it comes to Adobe software, there are "print" people (who are most comfortable with PageMaker and InDesign) and there are "image" people (who are happiest using Photoshop). I'm one of the former and while most layout programs seem perfectly intuitive to me, I've had to struggle to make sense of the last few versions of Photoshop. Thomas is a photographer (rather than a printer) but he seems to be entirely a self-taught techie, as am I; he's obviously old enough to have learned his photography long before there were personal computers. He had to work at this stuff to figure things out, and he's pretty good at passing on the results of that learning process to the reader. There's only a brief introduction on the theoretical basics -- pixels and equipment choices, bitmaps vs. vectors, RGB vs. CYMK, and so on. After that, he sticks pretty much to explaining in plain language what the principal groups of Photoshop tools are for (the names Adobe gives them are not always intuitive), how to carry out basic processes (like masking and selecting), and how to avoid making dreadful mistakes. The section on the Pen Tool is less well done, though, because he demonstrates how a Bezier system works without ever explaining *why* it works; he seems to think just experimenting with it will be sufficient. And maybe he's right. His discussion of layers and channels, though, is quite good. The book is crammed with well-rendered photos, usually shown in various stages of editing and modification. This is not a reference manual, and it's certainly far from being the only Photoshop book you will ever need, but it's an excellent place to start.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy Tutorial Guide To Photoshop
At last a guide to Photoshop which is in clear concise terms with instructions that are so easy to follow...I am just so impressed with the layout of this book and all the lovely colour illustrations. Every other book on Photoshop which I have looked at is presented in a heavy text book style, this one is like a Coffee Table book which is a pleasure to pick up. This book is set out so that even anyone without any knowledge of Photoshop would be able to follow and learn from it.. I am fortunate that I also have the teaching CD tutorials which Barrie Thomas produces and I was able to buy from his web site www.barrie-thomas.com. With this wonderful book and the CD.s Photoshop becomes easy..I just wish Barrie Thomas lived in Australia instead of England. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Intro
I have to wonder if some of these other guys who rated this book low are just computer geeks or what. I am new to digital photography having just bought a Digital Rebel and this book really opened my eyes to the possibilities of digital photography without having to wade through a big heavy book. Plus there are some National Geographic photographers who talk about their use of digital and that was very interesting. I have already put stickies in a lot of the book for favorite techniques that I want to work on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational book
I found this to be a very inspirational book. It really helped me understand the possibilities of digital photography and what was really important. There are so many people who know a little about digital photography but act like they are experts even though they give misinformation. I figure if National Geographic thought enough of this book to put it together and with the author an editor of big photo magazines, this should be pretty accurate. I thought it was.

The book seems aimed at people like me, photographers who want to master digital photography but don't want a degree in computer science. Plus there is some really great photography in here from some top digital photographers.

1-0 out of 5 stars Basic, basic, basic
If you are thinking about buying a digital camera, or if you own one and know absolutely nothing about it, then this may be the book for you. If you already own a digital camera and you're looking to improve your photography skills, then you need something more advanced than this. This book only covers the very basics of digital photography.

The only section I found helpful were some of the tips and tricks cooncerning postprocerssing of images, but that alone would not warrant purchasing this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Only if you know NOTHING
This book was rather disappointing to me. I thought that it would have good tips on how to take certain photos with a digital camera, like out side shots, indoor shots, back lit shots and so on but it had very little of any such advice. It seems to me that this book is more a sales pitch for digital cameras and their versatility. Unless you have no idea how to get started choosing a digital camera or how do use the 'digital darkroom' do not get this book. If you have a basic knowledge of digital cameras or own one all ready and have a basic knowledge of 'digital darkroom' software do not get this book you will all ready know everything that is mentioned.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good introduction....
Sheppard's book is a great introduction to digital photography, especially given his aim of treating the subject as the latest photographic technology, rather than something exclusive to the computer or digital world. The book is replete with examples of how digital cameras are expanding the possibilities for photographers and allowing them to ensure they're getting the shots the want. Central to Sheppard's treatment here is his discussion of the digital darkroom techniques. Sheppard correctly indicates that the digital darkroom should be seen as an extension of the traditonal darkroom, affording us new tools to try and achieve the results we are looking for. Instructively, Sheppard makes reference to Ansel Adam's works on prints as representing still many of the aims of digital darkroom work.

Still, the book seems only an introduction. There is very little in-depth discussion of the topics, so this won't be the only book on your shelf. But it certainly should be the first one you read before delving into more in-depth (and generally lacking in an overreaching artistic view) works on photography or digital darkroom techniques. In fact, this book would likely be best incorporated into National Geographic's Photography Field Guide -- with the digital sections hived off into where they are most appropriate in that general guide rather than simply having essentially a digital supplement to the series. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars You won't offend people to ask them a model
How many times you want to take people photo and you're afraid? How many times you want to take people photo and you don't have camera? This book will answer your first question and give you many good reasons to have camera with you all the time. Many Bryan's photo will inspire you to have your camera for the next best shots. The important of people photography is the communication among "camera", , "situation", "photographer", and "model". Bryan shows you the optimal way to integrate all four factors for better communication of your people photography.

3-0 out of 5 stars very helpful mainstream portrait photography guidebook
The book is loosely organised in chapters each covering one aspect of people-photography. Chapter introductions are rather mellow. It's really a large collection of example photos. Each one is elaborately discussed, including "the story behind" and technical info. Some of the photos are very good indeed. Most are mainstream pictures, however: technically perfect, but not quite inspiring. (Though I wish I could consistently obtain that level of quality myself.) Good book if you have time to read from A to Z and have a patient nature. Very valuable information can be gathered, but it's scattered throughout the book. I made a one-page summary myself.

5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive course
This may be the only book you'll ever need to read on the subject of photographing people outside of the formal portrait studio. This is a blessing, because very few books, good or bad, are available on this very important subject to amateurs and professional photojournalists. Peterson covers every aspect of taking pictures of people, including selecting subjects to photograph, approaching subjects, effects of different lighting, equipment and even some of the business aspects like model releases and stock photography. And, his images are wonderful. The only negative aspect - and this is present in most of his books - is that Bryan tends to forget that most people who read his book are not as well-travelled or equipped as he is. Many of the photographs were taken in exotic places abroad and he uses an expensive 300 meter lens for many of his shots. He has a reason for the latter, but let him explain. Take it with a grain of salt, and trust that you don't have to have such extreme equipment or go to such exotic places to get the results you want from following his instructions. ... Read more
