4-0 out of 5 stars 4 stars
I think this is an okay book for a beginner like me. The pictures are nicely drawn, but it doesn't give you all of the information you need to successfully complete your drawing. The prof. wants you to do this for homework, and here is the book to help you on. Well, I need more help on elevation (also 3d drawings), but they have one example, but it didn't really help me.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok, but not great
I have this book as the textbook for my intro drafting class in an ID program. I found it to be very uninformative in regards to drafting, but it may be ok for high school students who are just learning how to draw and use mechanical tools.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Designers
As other reviewers have indicated, this book is ideal for architecture students. It is also useful for any designer or artist who wishes to refine line-drawing techniques. The sections on perspective are particularly well-done, more thorough than any how-to art book I've ever seen.

I would have liked to have seen some exploration of coloration techniques, but overall the book is excellent. The entire book is hand-written and hand-drawn, which gives it a wonderfully unique feel that is itself worth the quite reasonable pricetag.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for architecture students
This is a great resource for learning how to produce good architectural drawings. It is oriented around hand drafting, but the concepts and ideas are important for good, readable CAD drawings as well. My first year studio professor made everyone buy this book. It was money well spent!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A visual guide to Architectural Drafting.
Architectural Graphics covers a huge range of fields within Architectural Drafting, and Presentation. From perspective to plans, this book has it all. Excellent for beginners, it is a visual, easy to understand guide to Drafting. ... Read more

Book Description

Within the space of only 14 years, the Bauhaus permanently altered the course of modern design and Walter Gropius's pedagogical approach revolutionised art schools. Interest in the Bauhaus and Gropius's methods is as lively today as ever-in conscious and unconscious borrowings from his work, or in direct criticism of his ideas. This publication is the only comprehensive account of the main pedagogical concepts behind the work of the Bauhaus. Analytical essays illuminate the various approaches of individual staff members in the Bauhaus, which included Gropius, Hannes Meyer, Mies van der Rohe, Itten, Moholy-Nagy, Albers, Kandinsky, Klee, Schlemmer and Joost Schmidt. Additional chapters investigate the pre-history of the Bauhaus plus its predecessors in matters of art-training, outlining the development of the institution from 1919 to 1933 and the reception of Bauhaus methods in the Weimar Republic, in the 'Third Reich', in both Germanys after the Second World War, and the USA-drawing on otherwise widely-dispersed writings on the Bauhaus as well as on a wide variety of other archive materials. ... Book Description

The year out, or internship, in a professional practice can be the most rewarding experience in an architectural student's education. It can also be a shock to the system to find that architectural working practices are very different to architectural study. This book provides a beginner's guide to professional practice and a step-by-step guide on how to find the placement that best suits your goals. It is the fourth title in the successful 'Seriously Useful Guides...' series.

In order to give you a real insight into professional experience, this guide includes real
life case studies from students who have been through the experience and from practices that have taken them on. It guides you through the steps of finding a placement, outlines the norms and expectations for internship in different countries, and discusses codes of office behavior and professional ethics. Contemporary architectural
practices are becoming increasingly diverse and this guide outlines some Practical experience/Internship choices, providing cases studies of award wining firms that offer practical experience. These case studies range from conventional practices based on the art of building, to practices based on digital media or contemporary urbanism. Finally, the term 'critical practice' is becoming increasingly important, and the book provides some definitions and examples of critically based architectural practices.

* Provides a valuable step-by-step guide on how to make the most of your time in practice
* Prepares you for what to expect from an office and lets you know what an office expects from you
* Includes interviews with students, professionals and tutors who have been through the experience, to give you the best, first hand, advice

Book Description

Many believe that the moral mission of architecture has been in serious decline for the last 25 years. In this important new book, Tom Spector points out the dilemmas of architectural practice and offers a theoretical and practical basis for an examination and transformation of the quandaries the profession now faces.

What makes a good building or a good architect? Are there limits to an architect's ethical or legal responsibilities in a building process where architecture plays an increasingly smaller role? Is preservation a moral imperative? What happens when building codes and ethical responsibilities are in conflict?

In The Ethical Architect, Spector investigates the moral underpinnings and implications of leading architectural theories, subjecting them to the analytical techniques of moral philosophy. His conclusions provide a road map to help architects make the right decision in the difficult tradeoffs that confront designers on a daily basis: Spector estimates that more than 100,000 decisions go into the design of an average sized building.

The Ethical Architect is a work of theory but refers to real buildings and real-world problems. It is Spector's call-to-arms for his profession and a must-read for practicing architects and students alike. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars it's my favorite rendering book
When I found this book back in college in 1979, I finally learned perspectives and rendering. (it only cost $12.50 then). His way is not about complicated grids but understanding the concepts of depth and perspective. This book also has something you never see which is overlays in color (thin tracing paper sheets) that overlay the line drawing to show the progression of the drawing from start to finished color. I am using this as a textbook for my Architectural Rendering class and reccomend it to everyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars A helpful book for the beginning architect or draftsman.
This book will help anyone interested in architecture or drafting hone their craft. Mr. Lockard writes and describes how to do most drafting work and puts it in an easy-to-follow manner. His opinions and ideas are valid and up to date. This would be a great help to beginning architecture students. ... Read more

Book Description

This third edition of 'How Designers Think' has been substantially rewritten following the second edition which was first published in 1990. Bryan Lawson has continued to try and understand how designers think, to explore how they might be better educated and to develop techniques, including computer-aided design, to assist them in their task. A completely new chapter on 'Designing with drawings' has been added and all the others have either been fully revised or wholly rewritten.

How Designers Think is based on Bryan Lawson's many observations of designers at work, interviews with designers and their clients and collaborators. This extended work is the culmination of twenty-five years' research and shows the author's belief that we all can learn to design better. The creative mind continues to have power to surprise and this book aims to nurture and extend this creativity. This book is not intended as an authoritative description of how designers should think but to provide helpful advice on how to develop an understanding of design.

'How Designers Think' will be of great interest, not only to designers seeking a greater insight into their own thought processes, but also to students of design in general from undergraduate level upward.

* An original look at the changing role of the designer in society
* Fully illustrated
* Completely new chapter on 'Designing with drawings'

Book Description

The radical restructuring of the field of architecture made possible by recent developments in computer design cannot be understated-for the first time in history architects have been able to move from a top-down vision to a more organic, bottom-up vision. The 'insect-view' model developed by the ancient Greeks projecting grids on to the face of the earth is clearly the most enduring example of this top-down order, which has been slightly modified by Renaissance perspective and then Modernist collage. Now, in the era of cyber-design, architects have the opportunity to plan works where order is not imposed form up above, but instead emerges from the inside out. The Weight of the Image documents the fourth Master Class organized at the Netherlands Architecture Institute, where Lars Spuybroek (of NOX) and Bob Lang (Ove Arup) have developed a lucid and intelligent method of design where the 'emerging view' and the 'projected view' constantly alternate, and in the book they explain the procedure in full detail. ...
