5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning and Gorgeous
I was trying to get some reference for the Icelandic landscape for a film on which I was working. No other land on Earth could contain the richness of Iceland. You really feel that God reached down and painted this island. This is definitely a coffee-table or reference book. It's hardcover and it's binding holds up well under stressful conditions. There is really little text, which was fine because the pictures say it all. Lily Winter's review is dead on. The pictures really look like abstract paintings. You see everything from the flowing coastlines to the snow-capped mountain peaks...not to mention the formations that thousands of years of lava flows and glaciers have created. I highly, highly recommend it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking views of an unworldly landscape
This large, coffee-table book shows the strange, startling landscape of Iceland from above. Each photograph is accompanied by a one or two line description, and there is also an introduction. A map shows the location of each natural wonder. The photographs are beautiful. They do not include the sights usually seen in tour books, such as waterfalls and cliffs, but concentrate on various interior mountains, river valleys, and icefields. This is the Iceland that you may never otherwise get to see. Many of the landscapes are so strange, that they could be mistaken for abstract pieces of art. My only negative criticism of the book is that, in many photos, a bird or other item should have been included as a guide to indicate scale. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking photos, wide varitey of beatiful landscapes
I love David and Marc Muench's photography and this book is a treasured addition to my library. The color and production values are exquisite and up to the high standards I expect from Muench.

These photos capture the awesome beauty and fantastic variety in California's natural landscape through the seasons. The book is divided into sections for the mountains, forests & plains, coast and desert.

Muench has brought new life to many often photographed landmarks with his mastery of light and detail. He has also uncovered many beautiful but less known places; dawn & dusk skies, vibrant flowers, delicate waterfalls & more.

James Lawrence's accompanying text touching on a wide range of topics relating to California's natural history is fascinating and entertaining. I have loved spending hours with this magnificent book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible
This book confirmed my feeling that David Muench is, for lack of a better description, the Ansel Adams of color photography. I already owned his Appalachian Trail book, "Uncommon Places" (I think it's called), but my brother wanted a California-related book for Christmas, so I picked this up, sight unseen. Quite simply, it's breathtaking. The photos span the length and breadth of the state, from Humboldt County's misty redwood stands to the La Jolla coast, to Yosemite and the mountain passes and lakes of the Southern Sierras along the John Muir Trail. There are even a handful of urban photos that make downtown L.A. look quite nice. If ever you doubted that we live in the closest to a natural paradise as there is, take a look at this book, and doubt no more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Photos
The most beautiful book with California's photos I've ever seen. I have already one book by Muenches and when I so this one I didn't have to open it to make sure it's gorgeous. But it was even better then I expected. It has 4 parts: Mountains, Oak and Grass, Coast and Deserts. So, you are not gonna miss any detail of nature in California (of course poppies, redwoods and spanish moss on the trees are there too). If you want to make somebody going to California give him this book :) I promise anybody will fall in love with California and Muenches' books. ... Read more

Book Description

Adolphe Sylvain (1920-1991) stopped off in Tahiti in 1946 and, enchanted by the beautiful landscape, welcoming people, and a certain island beauty who called herself Tehani, decided to stay. He settled in and eventually married his hypnotic lover, working as a correspondent for magazines such as Paris Match, Life, and National Geographic. Drawn by an irrepressible desire to capture his surroundings and to share this lost, unknown world with those outside of it, he dedicated himself to photographing the island's many delights. Like Rousseau and Gauguin before him, he was captive to the people and places of a land so radically different from his own and chose it as his principal subject matter. Sylvain's rich, skilled black-and-white images are like visions of an earthly paradise, peopled with half-clad women wearing flowers in their hair, the sun reflecting off of their glowing skin. His images, capturing the timeless beauty of Tahiti, are a testament to the island's powerful magnetism.

After Sylvain's death, his widow Jeanine-Tehani had a dream that a European embarked upon her island country and that she gave to this person all of her husband's photos to be made into a book. In a storybook twist of fate, it just so happened that Tehani's dream became a reality when photographer Gian Paolo Barbieri- born on the same day and hour as Sylvain- stopped off for a visit a few years later. He was mesmerized by Sylvain's photographs and eagerly gathered together his work to take back to Europe. Thus was born Tahiti, woven together by the strands of destiny and the vision of an impassioned photographer.

Tahiti begins with a preface by Barbieri and an introduction by biographer, journalist, and longtime friend of Sylvain, Jean Lacouture, followed by Sylvain's best works, including landscapes, portraits, and images of celebrities visiting the island (such as Brigitte Bardot, Marlon Brando, and Charles de Gaulle). With these luscious, sensual images as evidence, it's not hard to see why Sylvain was enraptured by Tahiti's exotic, ethereal atmosphere, nor why he felt the need to photograph it. Sylvain's work has not met the success it deserves until now, as fate finally brings his photographs to the world with this retrospective tribute. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the BEST BOOKS of 2001 !!!
This might be the most exciting publication of the entire year! It's certainly one of the most thrilling books published in recent times. It recounts the life's work of Adolphe Sylvain who visited Tahiti in 1946 and, enchanted by the landscape, the people, and a girl named Tehani, decided to stay. He settled in, married his lover, and dedicated himself to photographing the island's many delights while working as a correspondent for magazines such as Paris Match, Life, and National Geographic. His black & white photos are spectacular visions of the earthly paradise that is Tahiti and showcases the splendid beauty of the landscape and its people, especially its girls (...).

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a true depiction of the Tahitian woman
Contrary to what Mr. Mitchell mistakenly states, most of the models in this book are not Madame Sylvain. They are women of Tahiti plain, simple and beautiful. I actually bought this book while in Tahiti and each time I leaf through it I remember the wonderful moments I had in Tahiti. Tahitian people are quite possibly the most beautiful people in the world and Sylvain captures this perfectly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exotic Natural Beauty in Paradise
Summary: Adolphe Sylvain had an eye for the images that people in developed countries imagine about a fairy tale South Pacific. Many of our ideas about what a tropical paradise is come from his photographs. For a few minutes, you can imagine yourself to be part of a local village of people who fish for a living back in the 1940s and 1950s. This book is dominated by scenes of native Polynesians enjoying the natural beauty of Tahiti. The model is most frequently M. Sylvain's Tahitian wife, nee Ms. Jeanine Tehani Vidal, whom he married in 1946.

Content Caution: Before proceeding further, please realize (as the cover image indicates) that this book is filled with photographs of topless and nude female models, usually the photographer's wife. These images would earn this book's material an R rating if it were a motion picture.

Review: M. Sylvain's photography makes unusually good use of black-and-white contrasts for capturing lush tropical landscapes, lagoons and beaches, nudes, and everyday scenes in Tahiti. His work benefits from the frequent use of his wife, Tehani, as a model. She is remarkably relaxed and happy in these images, and helps to set a mood of natural enjoyment of nature that will have the viewer yearning for Tahiti. Lest you think these scenes are very overposed, I saw scenes very much like these during a vacation in Tahiti in the mid-1980s.

Some of the images are ragged around the edges, which reflects the terrible loss of much of M. Sylvain's work during a fire in his studio. Some of these images were rescued from the debris that remained. As a result, these images almost all date from 1946-1957.

Ms. Sylvain will remind you of a sea otter in some of the images, as she glides effortlessly through the crystal lagoon water. Her connection with nature is direct and joyous. Her apparent pleasure in what she is doing is infectious.

The images themselves are well composed, technically very fine, and the reproduction quality is excellent.

Towards the end of the book, you will also see some photographs of famous visitors to the island like Brigitte Bardot and Charles de Gaulle.

My original interest in visiting Tahiti was tied to having watched a television series, called Adventures in Paradise. The stories related to a schooner captin operating out of Papeete. When I read the book, I was interested to see that M. Sylvain had been an adviser to that series as well as other major filming in Tahiti over the years.

Many people also know Paul Gauguin's paintings of Tahiti, which have also helped form expectations about the islands and their people. In particular, James Michener with his Tales of the South Pacific helped created an image of beautiful, winning Polynesian maidens that is echoed here. Ms. Sylvain observes that her husband played a key role in creating the myth of the vahini, as a result.

After you look at these dreamscapes of Tahiti, you should sit back and think about what your ideal image of life is. What would you be doing? Where would you be? Who would be with you? What does that picture tell you about yourself?

Dream boldly . . . and recognize the opportunity to life your dreams as Adolphe Sylvain did!

Book Description

Within its borders, Idaho is a land of extremes. From desert moonscape to towering peaks that spawn a thousand rivers; from urban sprawl to places scarcely trod by humankind. It's a
young land, where antiques are only fifty years old. Its mountains are so young they periodically remind us of their growing pains. Much of Idaho is best described as, "You can't
get there from here." We are as back woods as it gets where we touch the Canadian border, and in our capital city, as urbane as we wish to be.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book at a great price.
Idaho Discovered is a beautifully executed coffee table book with an affordable price tag. It showcases the work of one of Idaho's most talented photographers. Kirk Anderson has explored all areas of this awesome state from the forests and lakes of the North, to the wheat fields of the center, to the austerely beautiful high deserts of the South. He avoids the trite image, seeking out the unusual or waiting for unique light or atmospheric effects to transform a scene. The color reproductions are of very high quality and have a natural look.

·Instruction on composing the shot and editing it digitally, keyed to outdoor subjects and outdoor conditions
·Selecting equipment for use in the field
·Illustrated in full color

A professional writer and photographer who has long chronicled his adventures as a mountaineer and wilderness traveler, James Martin is uniquely positioned to help others "gain the most from swapping chemicals for silicon." In Digital Photography Outdoors, he begins with the basics: how a digital camera works, special considerations for use in the field, and selecting the best equipment and most useful accessories for capturing outdoor action.

Martin presents the new rules of digital photography (why overexpose?) and reminds us of old rules that still apply (light and good composition remain key). He covers the fundamentals of digital editing, including selecting software tools, applying filters, creating the illusion of movement, and stitching photos together to create panoramas. It's about exploiting the advantages of digital, as well as meeting its challenges ("storing images safely becomes an obsession.") Martin also offers tips on care and maintenance of digital equipment in field conditions. ... Read more

Book Description

Clusters of white cottages huddled in a fold between hills of an unbelievably rich green . . . villages of a single street, dazzling in their array of color washes and picturesque shop and bar signs. . . . Such are the villages of Ireland, the most beautiful of which are captured in Hugh Palmer's evocative photographs and Christopher Fitz-Simon's sensitive commentaries. Beautiful though many of the villages of Ireland undoubtedly are, they are also working, living communities. The vibrancy and warmth in a village bar or local shop proclaim a culture not yet submerged under mass tourism or the rash of vacation homes that have blighted so many of Europe's prettiest villages and robbed them of traditional ways. Following the divisions of the ancient provinces--Ulster, Leinster, Connacht, and Munster--the journey is full of fascinating rural gems, some famous and others less well known. There are the coastal villages of Cork with their handsome houses of many hues sloping down to a sea that so many Irish crossed to found other communities in the United States. Roscommon and Galway are proud of their medieval churches, while Ulster villages look toward the Atlantic and seem to be girding themselves against the rigors of the northern climate. Literary and historical associations abound, as in Ardagh, site of pre-Christian settlement and the place where Oliver Goldsmith was inspired to write She Stoops to Conquer. The latest volume in the best-selling Most Beautiful Villages series, this extraordinary visual and verbal record of the Irish village is completed by a guide to the most important sites, markets, hotels, and restaurants. 258 color photographs. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Breathtaking
This is a fantastic coffee table book. The photographer has captured so much color in each photograph, you almost expect some sort of visual explosion -- how can such a dynamically variegated palette be contained in a single picture?! The whitewashed cottages, the blue-green sea, the dun colored old castle walls... even the street signs are beautiful. I myself am half of Irish descent, and half of Italian descent. Although I must confess that in culinary terms, my Italian forebears had considerably more "on the ball" than my Irish ancestors, this book makes me appreciate some of the beauties that Ireland itself has to offer. It makes me determined to visit it at some point.

The book is divided into four parts. Each traditional ancient Irish kingdom has its own section -- Ulster, Leinster, Connacht, and Munster. Each section is also followed by a brief photographic essay, dealing with such topics as "Ancient Ireland," "Bar and Shop Fronts," and "Painted Villages." At the end, there is a useful map, a travellers guide complete with phone numbers and addresses of Inns and hostels, and a very handy little bibliography.

I would just like to also recommend, for anyone with an interest in Irish history, "The Atlas of Irish History" by Sean Duffy. It is out of print, but you should ask your local librarian if he or she can find it, using OCLC or inter-library loan. If, like me, you have Irish blood in you, you will be familiar with the feeling of being quite alienated from the broader sweep of European history prior to the settlement of America. I once looked in the index of an encyclopedia, and actually found more entries on Native Americans, who of course are considered to be a marginalized people, than I could find on the Irish. This book, and the atlas I recommended, can help remedy that situation, and "The Most Beautiful Villages of Ireland" can beautify any home. Two thunbs up -- check this one out. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Eye Candy For The Trailer Park Crowd
This book brings together a wonderful collection of visual images of travel trailers from the late 1920s through the 1950s. The images come from vintage photographs, publicity brochures, and other publications. A majority of the materials come from the collections of the University of Southern California, the Auto Club of Southern California, and Vintage Vacations (a California travel trailer restoration company). The quality of the image reproduction is excellent making this book a genuine feast for the eyes.
Although subtitled "A Visual History Of Mobile America," the majority of pictures are from California with the rest of the country only sketchily represented if at all. Florida is the only other state to have more than one or two pictures included.
The book has eight chapters. Each begins with one page of text consisting of three paragraphs. The rest of the chapters are illustrations with captions and quotes. The first chapter "Motor Camping" has some of the earliest photos and portrays the beginnings of the travel trailer craze. The second chapter "Selling The dream" contains a collection of illustrations from brochures and advertisements. "Wish You Were Here," the third chapter, is a collection of postcards both humorous and illustrative. The fourth chapter "Trailer Shows" contains pictures from various California trailer shows. Pictures of the latest trailer designs are often enhanced by including attractive female models. "Take A Look Inside" is the next chapter which portrays the interior furnishings of travel trailers. Again attractive female models often enhance the photos. "I've Got This Idea" is a chapter that captures some of the more inventive and original travel trailer designs. A whole chapter is devoted to "Trailer Logos." It was in this chapter that I found the only reference to my 1948 trailer made in Alma, Michigan.
The book ends with a chapter on "Teardrops," compact trailers with outdoor kitchens built into a back hatch. A one page bibliography provides both current and historic books and articles for further reading. A joyful coffee table book, light on text, but very rich on illustrations, that is eye candy for the trailer park crowd.

5-0 out of 5 stars My new favorite book!
I am so happy that there is finally a book about this part of American pop culture that has been largely ignored! I had no idea that so many amazing pictures have survived all these years. The graphics are wonderful and I love all of the logos. Great book.

Book Description

Romance and adventure and a sunlit sea—the stuff that dreams are made of—inspire a major new series from Thames & Hudson.

The most magical islands of the Mediterranean are beautifully evoked by renowned photojournalist Jeremy Horner in the first volume of this series. Some, like Capri, are already well known; others, like Croatian Vis, are just entering the consciousness of island travelers.

"Velvet-green, rimmed with golden sands, and set in shallow turquoise waters" is Jeremy Horner's description of the islands off the coast of Dalmatia. Here, Brioni—once the private home of President Tito—is now one of the region's most exclusive hideaways. Hvar, a verdant ridge rising out of the Adriatic, was an outpost of the Venetian empire and enjoys a legacy of elegant architecture, as does neighboring Korcula, sometimes referred to as "Little Dubrovnik."

The main islands of the Bay of Naples—Capri and Ischia—have always been attractive to travelers from northern Europe and America, and all their delights are fully reflected in this book. But what of Procida, whose colorful fishing port of Corricella became famous as the setting for the film Il Postino? Equally fascinating and lively are the Pontine, Aeolian, and Egadi Islands.

Corfu, Rhodes, and Mykonos have been included from the galaxy of Greek island gems, but so too have delicious Santorini and less familiar Zakynthos, an Ionian paradise of white beaches, towering cliffs, and blue caves.

Whether the desire is for an unspoiled coastline (Gozo), escape from the obvious (Djerba off the coast of Tunisia), Riviera sophistication without the accompanying overdevelopment (Porquerolles), or a Spanish interlude (Majorca and Ibiza), everyone's dreams will be fully satisfied here. 200 color photographs. ... Book Description

Drawing on experiences from villagers in Bengal to scientists in Bangalore, this book explores the beauty, adaptability and personality of India's most iconic garment. Banerjee and Miller show why the sari has survived and indeed flourished as everyday dress when most of the world has adopted western clothing. Their book presents both an intimate portrait of the lives of women in India today and an alternative way for us all to think about our relationship to the clothes we wear. Lavishly illustrated and rich in personal testimony, The Sari expertly shows how one of the world's most simply constructed garments can reveal the intricate design of life in modern India.

5-0 out of 5 stars These books are good for finding the lights that are in them
There are directions and other info for finding and visiting lighthouses. They do not always show all lights for a given area. The photos are all color. I own 3 of these books. There are not many other guide books out there so if you are looking for guide books these are good to have....

1-0 out of 5 stars Photos of the Sample Pages Provided
Quality of photos was very poor. I want to see details of the various lighthouse not photos of the sky, trees or water. Photos of dark shaded lighthouse against a dark background on a very clouded day does not make for good photography. I have seen better pictures on the internet.

3-0 out of 5 stars EASTERN GREAT LAKES LIGHTHOUSES
The photgraphy is beautiful and the stories well written and informative. Directions to lighthouses are pretty good. I was disappointed that every light was not included. They actually only cover selected lighthouses. I have since found a real good book that covers all lighthouses in the eastern Great Lakes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Lakes Light Review
I have found this book very helpful in locating lighthouses in my backyard that I never knew existed. I have long been a fan of lighthouses, and this book has intensified my search to see as many of the lighthouses around my area as I can. I also like the fact the directions are given to make finding each lighthouse easier to find---with these directions, I should be able to find a lot more lighthouses in my own area, and not have to go traveling great distances to see one. Thanks for publishing such a great book!!!!!!!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great picture book for lighthouse lovers
Bruce Roberts may be the best lighthouse photographer working in America. Any of the books by him and his partner Ray Jones are well worth owning. They include great lighthouse photos, a little story from Jones about each one and directions as to how to get to them. The lighthouse lover could scarcely ask for more. ... Read more

Book Description

Cultural anthropologist and photographer Kyoichi Tsuzuki describes the pages of Roadside Japan as "a heaping helping of crass, dumb, and vile nonsense." This is the Japan you won't find in chic travel brochures. The image of the Naniwa Yasaka Shrine, for example, features 220 vending machines selling everything from luck in love to horoscopes by blood type. It's an exploration of the roadside attraction where even the Buddhists have theme parks. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The ultimate conversation piece
I bought this book in Toyko for 4800 yen, so I'm not sure exactly why Amazon is charging {} (!) for it. In any event, this long book of photos is the ultimate conversation piece: Tsuzuki writes a weekly column for a Japanese newspaper about odd things one can see driving around Japan and this book is a collection of his finds. It shows that small town Japan is just like small town US--full of odd folk monuments, primitive art, fiberglass dinosaurs, homespun museums, and other folksy treasures. If you know someone who is going to Japan, have them buy you a copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars also true to life
I got this book after I read Tokyo Style, also by Kyoichi Tsuzuki. As with that book, this one has huge, glossy pics and if you can afford it, it's an entertaining book. I lived near/visited several of the places discussed in the book when I lived in Japan from 1993-1998. I got the feeling at some of the locations that they weren't much used to seeing foreigners. I got my copy in Japan, and it has both Japanese and English text; so maybe you can justify it to yourself as an expensive study aid, if nothing else!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most exotic photo essay
This is book that contains many shocking photo that reflects many interesting aspects of the Japanese Culture. It is definitely one of the most interesting photo journey I have read. It is a collection of temples, museums, and site in Japan. From Hokkaido to Kyushu, it included over 150 extremely intriguing places. Great photograph, and great layout of the book. It sure suits its name "Roadside Japan". Some of the picture might be disturbing for some people, but that is just part of the Japanese Culture. ... Read more
