Book Description

Designers make color choices that affect both the meaning and impact of their logo designs every day. They have to ask themselves: Is orange too forceful?Does red give the wrong impression? Will purple convey the right message? Questions like these can be put to rest with this ingenious, tell-all-about-color book. While many books address logo design in general, this is the only one that examines the psychology and use of color in terms of how it affects a design, and how that design affects a viewer. By exposing the underlying meaning of each hue, this book ensures that designers never again second-guess their color choices. ... Read more

Few books on design address the use of color and its role as a tool that creates moods, images and emotion. Now at last The Big Book of Color in Design addresses this need, providing a rich treasure chest of ideas in its 30 different sections. Each section follows a mood (such as "classy," "hot," "regal," or "corporate") and shows current projects designed to evoke that feeling. Every project features a color chip with the CMYK formula for creating a similar tone. Hundreds of examples show how color is used in brochures, ads, logos and more. A worthy successor to the best-selling Big Book of Design Ideas, The Big Book of Color in Design is the ultimate companion to anyone designing for today's sophisticated market.

5-0 out of 5 stars A colorful and historic collection of designs
"Art Nouveau Designs in Color" is a wonderful reprint of a portfolio first published in Paris around 1900. The book collects the graphic designs of Alphonse Mucha, Maurice Verneuil, and Georges Auriol.

The many colorful designs in the book contain a number of different motifs: flowers, peacock feathers, seahorses, birds, butterflies, various geometric creations, and other elements. These decorative designs are often playful, often elegant. Overall, a fascinating and delightful book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What International Market?
The international market this book is refering to is all in the US. Maybe the title should be "The Americanization of International Colors and Designs".

1-0 out of 5 stars What are they thinking?
Just one question. Where are the designs and colors for the International Market? The author should travel to all the destinations to explore and compile all the colors and designs before writing this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pretty colors, but no substance
This book has pretty colors if you like colors. That's about it. Pretty colors.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unprofessional
This is a neat idea, to explore color usage and meaning around the world. But the authors, a writer and public relations specialist, don't demonstrate the know a thing about the subject matter. Mistakes abound everywhere. South Korea is illustrated with Singapore's flag, Germany's flag is upside down, unrelated countries are lumped together. Rather than showing locally produced graphics to illustrate color usage, the authors show paper cups from Starbucks to show Kenya and Costa Rica color usage. While the book is subtitled "designing with color for the international market", the examples are often U.S. designs that will never set foot in the international market. Even Mexico, which surely has plenty of good graphic designers, is illustrated with only U.S. designs for tourist brochures, Starbucks (again) and a Mexican theme party. The publisher should be scolded for not excercising any editorial judgement. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nobody explains color better than Hilary Page
Not only is Hilary Page a fine artist, but she writes wonderful books that explain art technique.

If you aren't pleased with the results you are getting when mixing colors, do read this book.

If you are a watercolorist, the Guide to Watercolor Paints by the same author is valuable reading as well.

Amazon.com

Another in the Web Site Graphics series showcasing outstanding Web design, Web Site Graphics: Color focuses on innovative use of the 216 colors in the Web-safe palette, and on color schemes that dare to go beyond to 8-bit.

Among the many eye-catching sites is the color-restrained Lekrummet Online (www.ot.se/lekrummet). However, since this book was researched, Lekrummet has transformed into the equally attractive Ultraboy (www.ultraboy.com). The happy colorblocks at Gurl (www.gurl.com) are not stereotypically "feminine" colors; the site looks young and active. Intensely green "futuristic" wireframe images make Gr8's Web site (www.gr8.com) recall '70s science fiction and Japanese animation, an attention-grabbing idea in a site for a design firm. And for those with 8-bit capability, the digital comic book site Zark (www.zark.com) offers richly smooth gradations within its images.

As with the other books in this series, Color is not a how-to. It is a gallery of today's best efforts in Web design. The authors have carefully chosen the sites and explain how each one excels in the use of color. If you need to find some new inspiration in a hurry, thumbing through Color will be a lot faster than clicking away through search engines. There's a lot to look at here. --Angelynn Grant

Topics covered: screen captures of many Web sites showing innovative uses of color in Web design, with captions explaining why each site was chosen and listing artistic credits; an index with the names and addresses of all design firms involved. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy them all
I was foolish enough to have bought their "...: Color" and "...: Navigation" at the same time. What a big mistake. The authors even had the audacity to use many of the same examples in *both* books! There is no way I'm going to try their Typography" one. I hate being cheated. Buy them used (and thus at a much lower price) if you must buy them at all. They might be a little helpful if you are suffering from a creative block. They weren't helpful for me, but I'm already artistic so maybe that's why.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delivers what it promises at a very economical price
This book delivers exactly what the title implies: inspiring examples of attractive website design, focusing on the use of color. I originally checked the book out of my local library, but after looking at it for an hour, had to jump onto Amazon.com to order my own copy to keep.

The book does not promise to be a "how-to" book, and it does not provide step-by-step instructions on how to achieve results similar to those shown ... there are many other books that do that. Instead, it offers beautiful full color pictures of well designed pages, along with brief comments to help the reader understand why each design works so well.

I'm finding this book to be a great source of inspiration to do some new and exciting things with color. For under $20, this book is a great bargain. I just ordered the other 2 books in this series, on typography and navigation. If they are even half as good as this book, I'll consider the money well spent!

3-0 out of 5 stars Glossy, inspiring images, thin text
I really liked this book. Although thin on written content, it has 96 glossy pages of beautifully designed web sites. This book gives me relief from creative blocks, and I find it a good index of a few URLs to visit and test for myself. Some useful tips on colour are present, but it's really a visual reference rather than anything overly informative. Good value for the low price. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Limited usefulness
I thought the interior of the book was over-designed and aesthetically offensive. It took me a while to learn how to ignore it. The principles and considerations delivered in the book seemed pretty solid, but I felt that the book was starting to get behind the technology curve. A 1998 book on screen display doesn't do justice to what's being successfully done in 2005.

I wouldn't have bought the book if I knew exactly what it would be like, but that's in part because I just don't like the style the book is done in and espouses. Too modern, too small, too smart. . .other people like the style more than I.

Arlan

2-0 out of 5 stars Use with caution
Lots of color, some of it distracting, but useful when it illustrates the effects of different color combinations.

Some of the advice is simplistic to the point of being misleading if followed unthinkingly. Forexample, on page 62 it states "Even if the text is clearly structured,it may be difficult to read it if the lines are too short. But where thereis only a small amount of text, as in picture captions and notes, shortlines are perfectly legible". If you read this out of context, youmight guess that you can shorten a line of text as much as you like and itwill still be legible - but of course this isn't the case. Imagine a12-character line for text with words like "incomprehensible" or"extra-terrestial" (both 16 characters).

I'm also concernedthat the book makes almost no mention of the purpose of the text, eventhough this has a profound effect on the way it is read and therefore itslegibility. The screenshots are nearly from sites with large amounts ofgraphics and small amounts of text. Different considerations apply toinformation-rich sites that will be read for their content, for example anFAQ.

I did like the illustrations of the same font in different stylesand on different backgrounds. These really help to show how a choice thatwould look great on paper can look awful on screen.

Buy it for thepictures, but be cautious about how you use it.

5-0 out of 5 stars a great addition to a web designer's library

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone should have this book!
My family and I have thoroughly enjoyed the work of John Wik, and he has once again produced an outstanding compilation of designs. Our entire family has received countless hours of entertainment, from our kindergartner to our grandparents. My grandpa has early dementia, and his sense of well-being is much enhanced when he completes a page. My grandmother also enjoyed coloring in her book as she recovered from knee replacement surgery. I personally am intrigued with the thought provoking way in which Mr. Wik puts together a page. I find it both mentally stimulating and yet relaxing to lose myself in the world of "Deco Tech" for a few minutes or even hours. Everyone should have a copy. It also makes a great gift! ...
