Excellent Resource
An excellent source of images that can be used for making charts, website buttons, newsletters. The designs are clean and can easily be modified. I personally enjoy just looking through the images as they are very inspiring.

A Visionary Book
HANDBOOK OF PICTORIAL SYMBOLS (1976) is an expanded, updated version of Modley's earlier book, 1000 PICTORIAL SYMBOLS (1942). Like its predecessor, the HANDBOOK shows us that a truly pioneering, insightful mind actually can see the way the future looks. // In his introduction, Modley argues that pictorial symbols are in some respects superior to words as a form of communication because they can be understood by people from around the world. In a globalized economy, he predicts, such symbols will ultimately supplant "Men," "Women," "Hotel," "Taxi," and "Camping," among many other words. This is the world we live in now. Modley could have actually strengthened his Case For Symbols by pointing out that such pictures can be recognized by children literally years before they learn to read, and that symbols can be recognized more quickly than words, making them especially useful in situations where fast reactions are necessary (e.g., control panels in airplanes.) // Most of the HANDBOOK is a collection of pictorial symbols, some created by Modley himself and others devised by various bureaucratic organizations, including the International Olympic Committee. pleasent viewing
Koch was a type setter with qualifications in Theology.
Primarily the works value is asthetic, I find it worth owning as a cheap collectable addition to my shelf.
Brief histories of each sign have a slight Christian slant, although not over bearing.
Illustrations are made from beautiful wood cuts and the type is of his own design.
Besides peeking the interests of occultist and broad minded Christians it is considered of value by graphic artists.

Heavily Illustrated
This is a well illustrated book on symbols. I would not call it an essential book for research purposes but it is a nice addition to the library. Some of the symbology is redundant (the furca is illustrated at least 3 times within the book) and I don't find all the explanations agreeable with other resources.

A Graphic Historical Reference Book
Rudolph Kock, graphic designer, typesetter and bookbinder put together these some 400+ signs along with a good historical capsule along each symbol. I found it to be useful when looking up a symbol and to understand some aspect of the sign, although not entirely in full, but a brief understanding of its roots. While not every sign of occultism is assimulated in this book, there is still plenty for one to be satisfied with. Most of the signs are from Early Christian traditions and those that have stemmed from that religion. Orginally these designs were woodcuts by Frik Kredel, Offenbach and Main. The font used to print in the book was created by Koch himself known as magere deutsche type. Originally published in 1930, this Dover edition is worth every penny, for the artist and the occultist.

A Pictoral Review of Signs
This is, as its title suggests, an expansive collection of pictoral signs primarily from European sources. The signs are beautifully reproduced, but if you are looking for comprehensive genealogies of the signifiers, you should probably look elsewhere. This book has 493 well-reproduced signs, but their histories are minimally documented without any source/ primary documentation of their origins. The signs are described in short, declarative sentences which readers curious about the meaning of the signs might find discomforting. The research here is not without merit or credibility, but the book is for readers interested in signs for their visual grandeur rather than their significance. Good reference - mostly in black and white
This is a solid reference work, one of a series, thick as a phone book, and full of information. I was unfamiliar with this book, now being reissued, and so was surprised (and a little disappointed) at the fact that it has precious few color plates. The zillions of illustrations are for the most part reproductions of contemporary 1920's ads and other published materials - and so are in black and white. There is an enormous amount of good material in this book - furniture, houses, and a lot of decorative and/or functional objects - but the casual reader (someone who is not a confirmed history-of-design maven) would be helped by having seen the artifacts in another venue - whether in museums, private collections, or in color photographs. This is a great resource for readers who are familiar with, and committed to, the subject.

truth in advertising
This inexpensive book and CD-rom does exactly what it says it will do which is produce great decorative letters. You can choose from approximately 25 styles of each letter in the alphabet.The images are easy to reference and are perfect for direct cut-and-paste. I'm not real great at deciphering most cd instructions but this is very simple. I wish more companys would take the hint. Simplicity is good.

Dover's electronic clip art is great1
I found this fun and easy to use! There is considerable variation in the letters, and I had no trouble finding uses for them, and expect I will find more in the future. It is inexpensive and hassle-free. I would recommend it!

Dover's Decorative Letters
Recently I needed a new company logo for my Real Estate firm. After recieving several different logos from various advertising firms I happened to glance thru this book and found just the perfect logo I was looking for. I use it everyday. It was then I made a fatal error and lent it out to someone and they lost it. I called the publisher of the book who in turn led me to Amazon.com. What a life saver! I typed in the book # in the search engine and it immediately popped up. I strongly suggest this book as well as Amazon.com

The Shadow Realm
While trying to understand the subtleties of shadowing in the art world, I ran into a dilemma. As a novice in many styles and in the use of producing certain textures, I found myself a bit baffled by the silhouette designwork associated with hairstyles, the addition of hats, outfitting, movement, and so on. It seemed difficult to get everything just right and I found myself needing some type of guide to help me across this pen and paper "speedbumb." That's where this somewhat obscure but very helpful guide, a find I accidentally stumbled across, came into play.

By providing well over 600 silhouettes ranging throughout the 18th to the 20th centuries, all struck in a variety of poses and in a variety of even obscure outfitting, this book allowed me to understand a few fundamentals that were, for some reason, devils to grasp. This, in turn, showed me the errors of my ways and, by providing a variety of poses and angles, made me feel like I was actually learning something. The book, organized into categories, ranges its material into the following sections:

An excellent book for those interested in Celtic Designs.
This is an excellent book for those looking to create celtic designs.

This book teaches you step and key patters, spirials, uncial script and how to layout manuscript pages.

The book is best used when accompianied by Aidan's other Celtic Design books. I have 7 of the books in this series and love them all!

All in all this is a great book for someone looking to create celtic designs.

A good start
Actually this book provides enough information to make the first steps into celtic design. I think it is the best book for beginners, but there lies the problem. Every time you try out something, you will soon reach a point where you need additional information to proceed. So for beginners it is an excellent entry into the matter, but nothing more.
