5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading For the Dylanologist/Addict!
An excellent guide for a road trip, or pilgrimage to Hibbing. It gives a lot of information on the history of Hibbing and its culture. Also quite a bit more info on Dylan's childhood and family history than I have seen anywhere else, including numerous photos. Picked it up on New year's Eve afternoon last year, devoured it overnight, and on New Year's Day--at 4a.m.--left for Hibbing and felt as if I had been there before when I got there and "watched the sun come rising from that little Minnesota town." Found all of the Dylan sites listed with the help of the book, but should have picked a better day. (Zimmy's was closed, the Dylan museum was closed, and it was rather chilly to be wandering around old Hibbing.)

Think of it as a highly detailed tour guide to Dylan's Hibbing, whether or not the reader actually goes. Adds a lot of weight to references in songs like North Country Blues, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE source for early Dylan info
I grew up on the Mesabi Range within 25 miles of Hibbing, Dylan's boyhood home. I've been a fan of his for 26 years. This is the definitive book on his early years. Full of photographs, some never before published, this book covers all aspects of his youth...his faith, his family, his town, his friends, and how he grew into who he became. Delightful reading for the true Dylan freak! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for starters
Easy to read with quite a number of colored pictures for you enjoyment. This is not a picture book but a pithy biography book. But will be shied by My Story My Dream. Of course, buy it if you are a completist, it's not a bad read after all :o)

5-0 out of 5 stars I have this book and couldn't put it down. I read in 2 days
I really like this book. I couldn't put it down. I took me only two days to finish it. It really was interesting.

4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read
This is a really good book. It tells about Celine's life in detail, and the photo's are also good.

4-0 out of 5 stars Celine Dion is worshipped as the Queen of Pop!
This book goes into detail the rise of Celine Dion from a young and innocent Canadian girl, to a young and innocent Canadian woman. One catch, she is now the most popular singer in the world! Who saw that coming? It is a fast read, but gives you insight into Celine's busy life. She deserves all that she has been given due to her hard work, and the author makes sure we know just how much effort she puts into her music. Well done! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars DIMAGGIO- Kept His Promise
I enjoyed the PROMISE-I never knew how great a player Di9maggio was until I read this book. I liked the authors style. He kept me interested by the suspence. Would Dimaggio keep his promise to the batboy. dimaggio kept his promise and so did joe the batboy. Who took Al Rosens bat?

5-0 out of 5 stars THE MEN OF AUTUMN
JOE CARRIERI'S RECENTLY PUBLISHED THE PROMISE IS A BOOK FULL OF MEMORABLE STORIES THAT MAKES THE READER WANT TO LIVE BACK IN THE 1950'S. IT SEEMED THAT THE PLAYERS WERE MORE INTERESTED IN THE GAME OF BASEBALL THAN IN THE BUSINESS OF "WHO WANT'S TO BE A MILLIONARE". IN TODAY'S GAME PLAYERS ONLY CARE ABOUT THEMSELVES, NOT THE TEAM AND CERTAINLY NOT THE FANS. IN CARRIERI'S WORK, THE READER IS BROUGHT BACK TO A TIME WHERE THE READER CAN WALK IN THE FOOTSTEP'S OF A YANKEE BATBOY DURING AN UNPRECEDENTED RUN OF FIVE WORLD SERIES. EVERYONE SHOULD READ THIS BOOK, NOT JUST BASEBALL FANS. THE STORIES ARE NOT STRICKLY FOR THE BASEBALL FAN BUT CAN BE AND SHOULD BE USED BY ANYONE AS THEY GO THROUGH LIFE...MY ONE QUESTION IS WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE BAT?

5-0 out of 5 stars A COMPSSIONATE DIMAGGIO
I HAVE BEEN READING SOME NEGATIVE COMMENTS ABOUT DIMAGGIO AND THAT MAKES ME MAD. THESE INSIDE WRITINGS SHOULD BE BETTER LEFT UNSAID. WHAT RIGHT DOES A WRITER HAVE TO REVEAL THE INNER MOST SECRETS OF A PERSON BE HE BEGGAR KING. IT IS NOBODIES BUSINESS TO READ THAT DIMAGGIO WAS GREEDY OR CHEAP.THAT IS WHY I LIKED THE PROMISE. IT DESCRIBED A GREAT BASEBALL PLAYER WHO SYMBOLIZED GRACE AND STYLE-AN AGE OF INNOCENCE-WHEN PLAYERS PLAYED FOR THE FUN OF IT-

5-0 out of 5 stars yankee stadium from the eyes of a batboy
If you like tradition and the history of the game read Searching For Heroes The Quest oF a YANKEE BATBOY . i LIKED THE BOOK BECAUSE IT WAS INFORMATIONAL AND INSPIRATIONAL- The Yankees of the fifties were team players who played for the love of the game---A GREAT BOOK.

5-0 out of 5 stars The other Dimaggio
I read The Promise and it was a baseball fans dream, full of Yankee anecdotes and the sharing of personalities such as the batboys Ralph and Joe, the clubhouse man Pete Sheehy, big pete little Pete, Al Rosens stolen bat, the great Rizzuto, Berra, the antics od Stengle and martin, and the GREAT JOE DIMAGGIO- I aM AFRAID THAT BEN CRAMER'S BOOK ON DIMAGGIO WILL TRANISH HIS MEMORY. i HOPE NOT. WE NEED HEROES AND TO ME DIMAGGIO WAS A BASEBALL HERE AND A MANS MAN-- ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Dumping on Dief--Again
This book's virtues are obvious. It is a very thorough, well-researched scholarly monograph covering all aspects of the public and private lives of the former Conservative prime minister of Canada. It is factually reliable and stylistically readable, if a touch dull.

But it is so thoroughly, comprehensively, persistently hostile towards its subject that it cannot be considered balanced or fair. It probably contains the truth (and nothing but the truth) about Diefenbaker, but it doesn't contain the WHOLE truth about him. The author is too obviously grinding an axe; his antipathy seems almost personal at times.

The cover is a clue to the contents, since it has a demonic close-up of a glowering Diefenbaker. Basically, the author thinks that the former PM did nothing right, apart from give South Africa a hard time on occasion. According to the author, everything Dief touched went wrong. His account of Diefenbaker's relations with John F. Kennedy are particularly disappointing. Absolutely nothing is granted to the PM's position while the President emerges as the very epitome of cool-headed reasonableness. (We know otherwise now.)

In other words, this is just a long, dull but dependably scholarly version of Peter Newman's anti-Diefenbaker polemics from the 1960s. It is as though the author wanted to make Newman's caricature of Diefenbaker respectable. Measured against that very low ambition, this book must be judged a success. Too bad the author didn't aim higher and produce a balanced picture of Diefenbaker warts and all, rather than just all wart.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great biography of a towering figure of Canadian history..
This text appeared as I was attending graduate school in Toronto, Ontario. I ended up writing my thesis on a specific part of the Diefenbaker governments and this book is the reason why. (I'd also like to say that I wrote Smith about some of my research and he was very cooperative and professional!) Wonderfully researched and well written, you'll learn quite a bit about Dief the Chief and US-Canadian relations during the dangerous years from the late 50s to early 1960s; but you'll also learn more about the Canadian experience.

This book is simply must for anyone hoping to understand Canadian politics and culture.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Dief!
This book has all you'll ever need to know about Canada's 13th PM. It is thoroughly (almost excessively!) researched, and covers the Chief's life from start to finish. At no point did I find myself thinking, "gee, I wish Smith could have provided us with more details or factual information". No book has gone this far in providing us with the definitive Dief! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A call to radical Christianity
A collection of Day's writing, it's a fascinating read, and one would hope a call to conversion for those who fail to see Christ in all around them, especially in the poor. In this fascinating memoir the Dalai Lama's mother tells a compelling woman's story. With vivid and intimate details, she recounts her life's humble beginning, the customs and rituals of old Tibet, the births of her sixteen children (only seven of whom survived), learning her son's remarkable destiny, the family's arduous move to Lhasa before the Chinese invasion of Tibet, and their escape and eventual exile. Rich in historic and cultural details, this moving memoir personalizes the history of the Tibetan people-the magic of their culture, the role of their women, and their ancient ideals of compassion, faith, and equanimity. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Canada's greatest Jungian
The biographer's reverence for her subject is restrained but evident. If there was a dark side to this great old man of Canadian letters, hardly a shadow of it is to be found here. The figure who emerges from this book is a small-town boy -almost a backwoods boy - whose imagination flourished in the unbearable stuffiness of early twentieth-century Ontario. Davies' greatest private enthusiasm seemed to be his repeated trips to the U.K. He did a less-than-outstanding Oxford BA, and fell in love with the place, there meeting an Australian who became his wife.

Fans of Davies' eleven novels will find ample links between the life and the works; they will also learn much about his unremitting early attempts to become known as a playwright, a genre in which he made less much of a mark than with his novels and his journalism (the latter effort highlighted by his 1950s and 60s stint as editor of The Peterborough Examiner).

Davies' role in the early 1950s startup of the Stratford Festival is an accomplishment not to be overlooked; for that alone, he would merit top ranking in the annals of Canadian Shakespeariana. If the Bard was Davies' first intellectual love, Carl Jung would likely be the second. My favourite passage in the 700-plus pages of this splendid biography is on 461-62, where Davies is quoted at some length on how Jung viewed the "second half" of life - the 40-plus years - as the truly magic time of existence. A second memorable passage comes at pages 484-85, where the author (for once, with immodesty, but here deserved), reveals how she asked Davies to see his preparatory notes for THE CORNISH TRILOGY. Davies politely refused the request in a letter which might be seen as his essential statement on the art of fiction. Here is its key sentence: "The imagination is a cauldron, not a filing cabinet." We should all paste these words on the top edge of our computer monitors.

2-0 out of 5 stars Fawning portait of still living (when written) author
this was a christmas gift several years ago and while I ADORE everything that Davies wrote (esp Rebel Angels), this was a fawning, name-dropping, dull, pendatic read. Davies, I believe, was still living when it was written, and he cooperated in the writing of it, so there is no critical look at him, his life or really any aspect of his writing.

I look forward to a new biography that doesn't treat Davies as a sacred cow. I grew up in the same area where davies was a newspaper editor and theatre guy and his put-on english accent and snobbiness didn't impress the people of my grandmother's generation.

Still, I appreciate his writing, but wished this was a truer portrait of him, warts and all. I found it a drudge to go through

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding biography of a Canadian "icon"
Judith Skelton Grant has done an absolutely outstanding job of giving us everything we wanted to know about Robertson Davies: his background and roots in small town Ontario, his three careers (acting, journalism, academia), critiques and illuminating discussions of his plays, novels, and occasional writings, his beliefs and philosophies, and so on. I could not put this book down; read the first 500 pages in two sittings and finished it on the third. Let's hope that she brings out an updated version to take the story up to Davies' death; as it is, there is no discussion here of his fine last novel, The Cunning Man. END ... Read more
