Book Description

Just in time for Bob Dylan's 60th birthday in May 2001-a multifaceted look at the man, his music, and his influence.

"To this day, wherever great rock music is being made, there is the shadow of Bob Dylan," said Bruce Springsteen at the induction of Dylan into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988. Or to quote John Rockwell, "Anyone who didn't live through the sixties simply cannot realize how important his albums seemed then; they defined a community." Dylan is a musical, literary, political, and religious icon whose lyrics and mystique have spawned countless articles and books. The Dylan Companion is a generous helping of the best, most pungent, and most insightful commentary on Dylan from all phases of his career right up to the present: personal recollections and professional assessments from the likes of Ken Kesey, Greil Marcus, Joan Baez, Andrew Motion, Lester Bangs, Kurt Loder, Allen Ginsberg, Pauline Kael, Geoff Dyer, Simon Winchester, and Robert Christgau-over fifty pieces celebrating the sixty-year-old performer who somehow manages to stay forever young. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Unique Volume Loaded With Disney Memorabilia !!
Every one of the more than 250 extra large Disney scrapbook pages is filled with unique, full color memorabilia from Walt Disney, and Robert and Richard Sherman, the song writers that created a world of popular music. Everything from pictures and memorabilia of Annette, Haley Mills, and Julie Andrews, to Tommy Sands, 101 Dalmations, The Carousel of Progress, and the Enchanted Tiki Room are featured. Items are grouped by decades. You can spend endless, enjoyable hours just looking in this huge volume that weighs 4 pounds !! Well worth adding to your Disney or music or movies or entertainment library.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's docious-ali-expi-listic-fragi-cali-roopus backwards!
What a great book about in my opinion the best songwriters! The Shermans had the opportunity to be with Disney during what I believe was the peak of the Disney Co. Their songs have warmed the hearts of millions of people across the world. My mother had never heard of the Shermans but whenever I sing their songs she says "I love that song, I didn't know they wrote that..." I can count on their songs being family friendly and joyful. I love Winnie the Pooh was not at all surprised when I discovered who wrote the songs! I never get tired of reading Walt's Time. The pictures are great and layout is so different. It is fun to read the background stories that is behind each song. Such as A Spoon full of Sugar and how Robert's son gave them the inspiration. I know the price makes it difficult for some of us. I personally do not own the book, but I love to borrow it from my library. It is a must read for every Disney and Sherman fan out there!

5-0 out of 5 stars It's supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
This book is truly the gem of my library... A beautiful look at the careers of Robert B. and Richard M. Sherman! Reading this book brought back so many memories! Little did I realize that so many of my favorite Disney (and even non-Disney) musical films all had one special thing in common... the music of the Sherman Brothers.

This wonderful book is formatted like a huge scrapbook... its fun to read, and just packed with rare photos, cartoons and other memorabilia that would delight any reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Nowhere is there a more happier book!"
Wow!, What a feast of fun! Here's the story of two of this century's most prolific and popular songwriters, the Sherman Brothers, finally cronicled in a superb scrapbook. Discover the Sherman Brothers' insights into the enigma that was Walt Disney, and learn of their dream job with this man.. who nurtured their talent, producing a sound that is truly instantly recognisable, the world over. These are the guys who created "the biggest word you ever heard", who left us singing of a "small, small world".. and gave lyrical life to a "fantasmagorical machine" called Chitty Chitty Bang Bang!

This is a lovingly remembered book by the Dick and Bob, put together with the help of a few amazingly dedicated fans. Bruce & David and Jeff have produced another gem of a book. With them, too much is never enough.. the photographic treasures, the office cartoons all give the impression of being invited to dinner with the Shermans. I was lucky enough to hear the Shermans at the piano for a preview of this book at a Disney fan's convention last year. That was a night I'll never forget.. as the brothers sang their way through the songs of my childhood. Now the feeling of that night (and my childhood) has been captured in print, and I can't be happier! Thanks guys, it's supercalifragilisticexpialidocious !

5-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating autobiography of two brother songwriters--
This is a fascinating autobiography of two brother songwriters-- and believe me, you've heard all of their songs. From the musical Mary Poppins to sharing an academy award nomination with John Williams, the Sherman Brothers tell their marvelous story through pictures and anecdotes. This is a "must have" for anyone who loves music and Disney! Great Book!!! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Oh how dull!
It's an excellent idea, but what grindingly dull work Todd Harvey makes of it all. Each of the 70 analyses follow the same pattern, so each contains a paragraph which says something like "I have heard 11 versions of Don't Think Twice, It's All Right : the [10/?/62a] 2nd Gaslight performance, the [11/14/62] Freewheelin' session VI recording, subsequently released on that lp, the [3/?/63a] Witmark session V recording..." etc etc through all 11 performances. (All the sessions are listed in an appendix at the back of the book, so why he couldn't asterisk those he'd heard and save 70 tedious paragraphs, I don't know.) Then later, we get a musical analysis of each song, like this : "Lay Down Your Waery Tune has a verse-chorus form with five verses (verse four has no chorus). In duple time it has an ABCA/ABCA phrase structure. Like Paths of Victory and Walkin' Down the Line the melody is the same in both the verse and chorus sections". Well, not much enlightenment there. I give credit for the author's doggedness in trying to chase down the sources for all these songs - there's lots of stuff I didn't know in here - but ignoring the appendices this book is only 127 pages long... (I believe that might be because it's aiming for educational establishments and not fans - maybe. Anyway, it tries hard to be "scholarly".) There are also odd lapses. Harvey credits John Bauldie's notes to the "Bootleg Series" box set then does not mention that Dylan's "Cough Song" is probably based on Jimmie Tarlton's (1930) "Mexican Rag" as Bauldie says. He omits the connection between "When the Ship Comes In" and the Carter family's "Gospel Ship"; and he doesn't explore the rather obvious thematic similarity between Dylan's "John Brown" and the Irish trad song "Johnny I Hardly Knew You". I might have forgiven the author for those omissions, but I can't forgive him for writing such a very dull and boring book about such an interesting subject. All in all, this is a real missed opportunity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent work
This is a fascinating book. Harvey examines 70 early Dylan songs for their musical and lyrical influences. He doesn't stop when he finds an earlier song with a similar melody. He finds a song that influenced the melody of *that* song, and then he finds yet an earlier song that had a similar tune, and so on.

Dylan has sometimes been criticized for ripping off the songs of this or that performer. Dominic Behan, for a famous example, claimed Dylan copied his 1957 "Patriot Game" in "With God On Our Side." Harvey's research shows what Behan conveniently did not mention: The "Patriot Game" melody had been used by Burl Ives in his versions of "The Nightingale," released on two different records in 1952 and 1956, before Behan wrote his song. Then Harvey traces the melody back to a recording made by Jo Stafford in 1948, released on a 78 rpm album. Harvey also reports that Liam Clancy said a very similar melody ("The Merry Month of May") came from the Appalachian Mountains.

Dylan *had* heard "The Patriot Game" and was influenced by it, as the lyrics indicate. The point is that, when folk songs and their melodies are the issue, no one person can usually be determined to be the author. Someone may copyright various songs, as A. P. Carter did with many Carter Family recordings, but that doesn't mean he wrote them. It is more a matter of receiving royalties that would otherwise be lost to Anonymous.

Harvey's book is fascinating reading, well written, and original. In this time when so many Dylan books are rehashes of the same old stories, it is a pleasant surprise to read a volume that is written from independent research.

The Formative Dylan is also a rare Dylan book in that its subject is Dylan's music, not his private life. Highest recommendation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great biography for young people
If you want the facts about one of baseball's most legendary players, this is an informative and inspiring biography. "Joltin' Joe" details DiMaggio's entire career and life, beginning in childhood as the son of a hard-working immigrant family and his rise to All-Star center fielder for the New York Yankees. All his important career statistics are included, plus a game-by-game summary of his record-setting 56-game consecutive hitting streak. Illustrated with many famous photos and some rare ones, too. A terrific introduction to a man who led his life with grace and dignity.

1-0 out of 5 stars Great timing, no facts, just awful
Somebody gave my kid this book for a present along with a few other books. It's the only book my son has ever thrown out in the garbage, and I can't say I blame him. Questions:

1. Who would issue a kids' book about Joe Dimaggio in the year 2000? What's next, a book about Ty Cobb for toddlers? 2. Where are the stats, the facts, the truth? 3. Whose idea was it to forget all the great records Joe set BESIDES the hitting streak?

This book is to sports writing what tuna fish is to steak. I am just sorry my friend spent any money on this at all. What a waste of time! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Celine had to struggle to get to the top.
I thought this book was very good. Celine story is inspirational. This book tells that Celine Dion knew she wanted to be a singer at an early age and she worked hard to make it happen. She does not think of herself as a star and remains close to her large family. Celine Dion was a very interesting person to read about.

5-0 out of 5 stars The life of a singing angel
This book is one of the best that I have ever read. As a dedicated Celine fan I loved this book. It took you from the very beginings of her life as a young child in a house with 14 brothers and sisters, all the way through to her rise to the top. A must have for any Celine fan out there wanting to know some great imformation about this singing angels life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Simple and succinct
Very short biography on Céline Dion, succinct and concisely put. Suitable for a person interested on the brief history of one great singer, but not so for a fan. I would recommend the Official Biogaphy or My Story, My Dream for someone who wants to learn more about Céline Dion. There are a few pictures printed on glossy paper, but I feel are too small. The quality of the paper is mediocre and ages have yellowed my book. It is not quite pleasant. But generally, quite a smooth and memorable read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Celine has a very interesting life.Everyone should read!!

2-0 out of 5 stars all this info is easy to find online
This book would be quite useful to keep track of Dylan shows and setlists if..... the internet didn't exist! Within 5 minutes anyone can find the setlist to any Dylan show, ever! why do we need a book.

Instead of Buying this book try and find a Dylan boot isn't just a restatement of what we can find out anyway!

2-0 out of 5 stars i heard a book a-comin' this way
its one thing to stand on your head and say bob dylan read this book.....to say bob dylan reads bob dylan books. whats worse to is to accuse bob dylan of being a dylanologist----a dylanologist employed in the business of being bob dylan............

i cant make out the sentences too good but the book is better read aloud in my mind, from a platform or atop an elephant on a parade. otherwise we are left in trap of dates here and there moving from past to present and onward. nowhere on this book can i find the date in nagadoches, in a beer and pretezel bar, a luminous gig, of course-----someone resembling and claiming to be kris kristofferson had to be taken into custody for attemting to play a mexican trumpet onstage, all the while bob dylan was said to have escaped throught he back door jumping on a horse and riding into town, selling his guitar at a rundown pawn shop. i give the book two stars for the two stars in my eyes.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Dylan reference book ever
I bought the first edition of Tangled Up In Tapes, back in 1987 (?), and it's come one hell of a long way since then. Glen Dundas has written THE essential Dylan book (along side 'Lyrics' !). Everything about this book is now first class - from cover to cover the presentation is immaculate, the information is laid out in a very clear way, with no need for a complicated set of annotations, footnotes or cross references. The photo's too are first class - interesting shots, well presented on good quality paper - excellent. In short: I love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars DUNDAS UNTANGLES TAPES
The previous reviews say it all. Glen has made collecting Bob Dylan tapes so much easier. This book is absolutely the best of it's type out there. If Dylan collectors had a "Best Seller" list, this would certainly have to be at the top. Thanks Glen. ... Read more
