Sparse information and inaccuracies.
The attractive, easy reading format doesn't save this disappointing entry to the "What's Their Story" series. I had hoped for more from a reputable publisher, but I'm afraid I find inaccuracies in children'smaterials unacceptable. The timeline in the back gives the incorrect yearthat Amelia Earhart disappeared, a pretty basic fact that puts the qualityof the entire series in question and the capabilities of Oxford to publishchildren's material in doubt. The focus of this revision is not how Eisenhower made policy, but how his decisions shaped American life in the 1950s and beyond. In this first post-revisionist study of the Eisenhower presidency, historian Chester Pach reaches beyond the issues the revisionists raised: Was Eisenhower in command of his own administration? Did he play a significant role in shaping foreign and domistic policy?

Drawing on the wide range of works published within the past decade, Pach expands Elmo Richardson's 1979 study by nearly one third. In addition to new material on national security policy, Pach deepens the analysis of Eisenhower's leadership and managerial style and explores the significance of the decisions Eisenhower made on a whole range of critical issues, from civil rights to atomic testing.

By emphasizing the fundamental failings of Eisenhower's presidency, Pach swims against the stream of recent scholarship. He concludes, for example, that Eisenhower's commitment to support South Vietnam in 1954, with its attendant responsibilities and consequences, was far more important--and ultimately disastrous--than his refusal to intervene with military force in support of the French in 1954. Eisenhower's unleashing of the CIA (in Iran, Guatemala, and elsewhere) also draws sharp criticism, as does his timid and ineffective handling of McCarthy.

Overall there are several good books about Dwight Eisenhower.The author who is British paints the administrative qualities of Eisenhower and how his contributions contributed to the Victory in Europe.Eisenhower was impartial with all the forces under his command-whether they are American, British, Canadian, or French.
Sixsmith details the plans to invade North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and France.With the people under his command, it is a wonder how he managed to get consensus on the goals and push the team toward victory.Sixsmith does a wonderful job of detailing all of these conflicts with the various generals and Churchill, Roosevelt, and DeGalle.Eisenhower really was a superior administrative genius and his abilities were as good or better than George Marshall.It was great we had Eisenhower on our side during WWII.
This was a short read which detailed the military aspects of Dwight Eisenhower.For more detail on his early life or later political life, one has to read elsewhere--perhaps Ambrose. ... Read more
