5-0 out of 5 stars Get Shocked by Science
This short and easy-to-read book (especially appropriate for 2nd thru 5th grade) provides a meaty and interesting story of Ben Franklin's experiments with electricity. Without getting too technical, the story explains things that Franklin discovered about which materials conduct electricity and which don't, the connections he made between static electricity and lightning and details of his famous experiment with a kite in a thunderstorm. Very interesting and nicely illustrated with full-color pictures throughout. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Franklin and Bache Enlightened Jeffersonians
Jefferey Smith's " Franklin and Bache " is a great book. Starting with the life of Benjamin Franklin and his intellectual development to the his grandson's formation of the Philadelphia Aurora and battle for liberty in the 1790's this book holds your attention. Smith shows how Franklin developed an elightened philosophy of liberty, equality, and classical republicanism and instilled it into his grandson. Young Benjamin Bache became the epitomie of Franklinian ethics: hard working, educated in the classics, sincerely devoted to republican government, and with a streak of revulsion to injustice.

In the 1790's as the Federalists began develpoment of their centralizing theories, and their Hamiltonian ideals of "energetic" government, government by a plutocratic elite, and commercial develpoment, Benjamin Bache was aroused. A firm republican, his Aurora preached the values of agriculture, liberty and sovereignty of the people, support for the French Revolution, and support for democratic as opposed to aristocratic government. Bache was an avid supporter of Thomas Jefferson and his ideals of liberty and republicanism.

Persecuted by the Federalist under the tyrannical Alien and Sedition Laws Bache stood steadfast in support of freedom of the press and the First Amendment. His untimely death due to yellow fever deprived the Federalists of their victim, but brought attention to the cause of liberty. Inspired by the ideals of Franklin and Jefferson for a liberal and enlightened society Bache proposed reform of the US Constitution, opposed slavery, supported penal reform, and care of the poor. If you want a good overview of the ideals of Franklin and Jefferson in the early republic this is a great buy. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars For most of his life Ben Franklin was a loyal British
subject. He also spent more time in England than any of the "founding fathers". This is a biography but also the history of how the British lost America thru their own stupidity. Franklin had a logical & forward thinking mind. He knew that America would not be a colony forever. That America could be ruled for much longer by a small island accross the the ocean was not reasonable. But that would happen long after he was dead. His coming of age politically was The Albany Plan of Union in 1754 which dicusses such proposals as uniting the various states & a constitution. This was all in the context of remaining in the British Empire. This book is his story of disaffection & final break with the mother country. Truly America's first world wide celbrity.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Dangerous Man In America, Scenes from B. Franklin..
Most illuminating, well written ,historical accuracy not found in our educatonal institutions. The views of Franklin's life are incisive. The work demonstrates that he, as select other men, had the vision, the education , the conviction and the ability to follow his thoughts through to fruition. Mr. Franklin's thought about the need for a 'constitution' began its development in the 1740s, and ended in 1789 at the Phildadelphia Convention. Miss Bowen alludes to this man's quite complicated personal and private life. Franklin's liasons arte tastefully mentioned as his style of life is clearly presented. His wish for privacy is highlighed although he was outgoing and social. He remained faithful and loyal to his wife in spirit, with affection and support throughout his long married life. The emphasis of this text is on Ben Franklin's many contributions to the development of this Country, and his wisdom in the nascent field of science. He was a fierce independent thinker who cared out "these united states".

A book not to be ignored and to be put before out senior adolecents as a 'must' read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Biographer Ever
This is one of the best written books on an historical subject I have ever read.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Dangerous Man In America
Timeless. A must read for any science student before graduation - high school or college. Hard science, hard times, hard minds, pliable personal judgments, almost a "how to" book on life. A great thrill to refer this book and have it light the reader's eyes and mind. ... Read more

Book Description

Few historical figures have captured the public imagination as completely as Sigmund Freud. At a time when many ailments of the mind were treated with soothing baths or dangerous electroshock therapy, Freud initiated a novel practice: he simply listened to his patients. He called his method of treatment psychoanalysis, or "the talking cure." Though the validity of Freud"s theories is still widely debated, there is little doubt that his contributions to the study of the mind were invaluable. In this compelling, even-handed biography, Catherine Reef explains Freud"s groundbreaking theories and methods and shows how Freudian thought has affected our culture, changing the way we think about everything from art and literature to raising children. Beautiful archival family photographs round out this intimate look at a fascinating man. Endnotes, bibliography, index. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good introduction
This book is a very interesting biography of the always-controversial father of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud. Beginning with his birth in Freiberg, Austria in 1856, the book traces his life through its ups and downs, through to his death in England, having fled from his beloved Austria after the Nazi takeover.

The book is generally favorable to Freud, but it does explain why he was controversial during his life, and why he is still controversial today. What he taught is explained in a simple, down-to-earth manner that will not be lost on readers unknowledgeable of the man, such as myself. I enjoyed this book, and recommend it to anyone who wants to be introduced to Sigmund Freud. ... Read more

Book Description

On a wet May morning in 1938, a young photographer named Edmund Engelman was invited by a coworker of Prof. Dr. Sigmund Freud to photograph the renowned psychoanalyst's cherished winter residence at number 19, Bergasse, in Vienna's 9th district.

For the first time in book form, here are the fruits of Engelman's project, a precious visual chronicle of Sigmund Freud's private life. This remarkable collection features some of the only extant photographs of Freud's storied analyst's couch, along with pictures of his library, his collection of Near Eastern art, and several rare photographs of Freud himself just weeks before the Nazi occupation forced him to leave Vienna forever. Published on the occasion of an exhibition of Engelman's photos traveling to the library of Congress and the Jewish Museum in New York City, Sigmund Freud:Bergasse 19 is an unprecedented look into the personal universe of the man who revolutionized modern psychology.

4-0 out of 5 stars Read this over your child's shoulder
Written for middle-grade children, this book is of the highest order. It is immensely enjoyable, written in an engaging and intelligent style. The illustrations and facsimiles of colonial newspapers contribute a lot, and the author communicates an infectious interest in his subject (though at times it may seem to walk the line of being overly adulatory). With his background in teaching mathematics, I was a little surprised Mr. Adler did not make more of the "magic squares," but no matter. Recommended for use in the classroom, or as summer reading for parents to enjoy with their children; and even for the general reader.

While reading B. FRANKLIN, PRINTER I felt I was immersed in the 18th century with Franklin. I felt I really knew him. I loved the escerpts from colonial newspapers, especially the ones from 1775, the first-hand reports from the firing at Lexington and Concord. I was never bored! ... Read more
