5-0 out of 5 stars Are The Reviews Correct?
I read the review made by the School Library Journal and thought that it did not give this book a fair review. This book is said to be a "dry account" and "is unlikely to spur any interest or excitement in readers". I beg to differ. As an eighth grade student, I would be at the correct age to read this book, and I believe that, although the book also reflects the negative aspects of Hamilton's life, it also portrays him as a true hero and is sure to spark any young reader's interest in the life of Alexander Hamilton. ... Book Description

Adolf Hitler is perceived to be the most evil political leader of twentieth century Europe. By presenting a critical selection of primary source material this book examines Hitler's background and involvement in the rise of National Socialism, the government of the Third Reich, leadership of the Second World War in Germany and his psychology, to discuss Hitler's credentials as a revolutionary.
Housden examines:
*the general characteristics of revolutions and revolutionaries
*Hitler as Agitator, Dictator, Deceiver and Warlord
*Hitler's architectural and artistic ambitions
*Hitler's mind and personality.
Hitler investigates what it was that motivated this national leader to achieve such monstrosities which still cast a shadow over Europe today.

4-0 out of 5 stars A rather sanitized juvenile biography of Alexander Hamilton
When Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr fought their infamous duel in 1804 it is quite possible that there were the two most arrogant politicians in the entire United States.I recently finished David McCullough's biography of John Adams, so I was not inclined to think highly of Hamilton and Veda Boyd Jones faces a problem in trying to tell young readers about her subject's less than stellar character. This juvenile biography provides Alexander Hamilton's resume, but without really getting into why he was so admired by George Washington and so reviled by many others, beyond the idea that he was ambitious and wanted to achieve success as a military leader. The tone is set early in the book when Hamilton's illegitimacy and the intense social stigma of the times is reduced to the declaration "This bothered Alexander because it was very unusual at that time."While later scandals in Hamilton's life are ignored completely, I do recognize that there is little value in getting into the salacious aspects with this particular age group.

Consequently, my stronger criticism is for the general way in which Hamilton's strengths are presented; they are essentially reduced to the fact he supported a strong central government. The political struggle between the Federalists and the Republicans that led to the fatal duel is also reduced to the vague point that Hamilton called Burr dangerous in the newspapers. So, on the one hand I recognize that Hamilton is a problematic figure for a juvenile biography, but on the other hand this volume misses giving young readers a solid understanding of why he was one of the most important political figures of his day despite the fact he was never elected to political office. We are told Hamilton was an excellent writer, but while there are references to the Federalist Papers and other important pamphlets, we never really get a taste of his public rhetoric. The book is illustrated with historic paintings and etchings, some of which show Hamilton.Other titles in the Revolutionary War Leaders series look at not only Jefferson and Washington, but also Benedict Arnold, Nathan Hale, Thomas Paine, and Betsy Ross. ... Book Description

Verl Frehner's book, Howard Hughes & Me, is a revealing new book, on a somewhat seasoned subject. It is an extensive and comprehensive work about the life of Howard Robert Hughes. It is biographical in nature and is thought to contain the most complete, in-depth, far-reaching, and extensive first-hand personal information available about him. As such, it promises to provide the reader with numerous additional insights into this man.

Under normal circumstances this book about Howard Hughes would normally have been written years ago. Despite this, the mystery and intrigue attributed to him has only partially mellowed with the passing of time. The "wall of reclusiveness" that he created to isolate himself from the media produced a shortage of information about him that still "begs" to be satisfied.

The content of this book accomplishes what most people want to know about him--what he thought, what he said, what he felt, what he did, and what he was about, in his everyday business and private-time activities.

Much of the basic information in Howard Hughes & Me comes from a confidential employee to Howard Hughes named Chuck Waldron, who shares, in a very respectful and forthright manner, some of the very human characteristics that Howard Hughes possessed. It is through this "confidential employee," and many other sources of information, that the reader is allowed to see the strengths, weaknesses, and even the oddities of Howard Hughes.

By design, the thrust of this story begins on January 1, 1970, and tells of the last seven years, three months, and four days in his life, until his death on April 5, 1976 (Howard Hughes' most reclusive years). Against this frameword there is much more information included and inserted in the numerous "flashbacks" about his personal life found in records, recordings, stories, and historical events that parallel his entire life and adds significantly to the Howard Hughes story.

Because of his reclusiveness it was difficult for people to really get to know him. As a result of this book, those who read it will come away with the feeling that they know Howard Hughes. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Amateurish at best!
I have given this book two stars solely because it seems as though any Amazon review in which one gives an item one star never gets posted!

This book is annoyingly amateurish.Typographical errors, misspellings, subject/verb disagreement, incorrect use of words, and the like abound in this book.Additionally, the type in the book (e.g., words underlined, bolded, capitalized, etc.) only adds to the aggravation. To top it all off, one gets the feeling that what is related in this book is second or third hand (at best!) information.Disappointingly impersonal!

I say one is better off seeking other books on Hughes (e.g., Citizen Hughes, I Caught Flies for Howard Hughes, His Weird and Wanton Ways, The Hidden Years, etc.)In any event, this book is solely a footnote to the aforementioned books on Hughes and is not for one looking for an introduction to Hughes or for details about him. ...
