5-0 out of 5 stars A Fresh View of John Lennon
John's sister, Julia Baird offers a unique perspective of John's life and his relationship with his Liverpool family. Other biographies merely gloss over John's family (with the exception of Mimi). I found out some interesting facts about the Stanley sisters.
If you're a big John Lennon fan and you already know a lot of Lennon trivia, read this book for a fresh view point.(...)

5-0 out of 5 stars The unknown side of John Lennon
This is a very interesting book about the family man John Lennon. His sister Julia tells all the true about the relationships between John and his mother, his stepfather, his little sisters, the tragedy when their mother was killed by a drunk policeman, and the beginnings of the group that four years later became the greatest phenomenon of the popular music, The Beatles. Also, Julia remembers for us, the phone conversations with John in the late 70's, near to John's death, and the feelings of all family when John was tragicly death by the gun of an out of mind man.Great book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sheds some light
This is certainly the best book that writer Guiliano has ever been involved in. It is interesting to hear about this untold side of John Lennon's family life, straight from a real member of that family. Nice. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
A. Lincoln: His Last 24 Hours is one of the best books I've read about the fateful day in April 1865 when the 16th President was shot and killed at Ford's Theater. It paints a fascinating picture of a very tragic man on the last day of his too-short life. The relief and joy that Lincoln must have felt with the end of the Civil War finally at hand, his concern for how to achieve the nearly impossible task of reconstruction, and the never-ending personal challenges he faced in dealing with his wife are all captured in the words of Mr. Lincoln himself as well as through comments from observers who had contact with him on that day.

The book reads very much like a novel but is obviously very well researched with plenty of reference material documented via footnotes throughout. The author knows the subject well and is careful to note when conclusions not fully supported by documented research are drawn. The result is wonderfully readable and highly informative unlike many other accounts of that day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Image of The End of A Great Leader
This book captures the readers attention and takes him on a step by step discourse of the hours before Lincoln's assassination. A very sad image is presented in the book because it's obvious Lincoln's last day of life may have been his happiest day of life. Lincoln was overcoming the anxieties of war, but was cut down when he had a handle on life. In this book the reader learns of the threats to the president's life and what could have been done to prevent Lincoln's death. Infortunately in 1865 all Booth needed to end the president's life was a passion against Lincoln. Great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating
I, too, purchased this book at Ford's Theatre. At first, I thought it would be one of those whodunnit books, but I was wrong. The author obviously put alot of effort, time & research into the book. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I finished the entire book during the plane ride back to Los Angeles. I lent it to my family members and they, too, enjoyed it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece of Time
History books must reach into the past to pull forward a tangible, feeling portrait of those who have lived before us. A. Lincoln: His Last 24 Hours is a brilliant account of a ever researched, fascinating topic. America may know the general idea of the Lincoln assasination, but this book reaches into the depths of a life that seems to come together in the course of one day. The life of America's greatest president was turbulent from its foundation, and a peace settled into the man who had an ironic foreshadowing of his own death. After reading this account, one can argue that Linocln was so relaxed, joyful and relieved. This may be due to the fact that he knew his life and accomplishments had run their course and he, along with the Unified country he fought so hard to solidfy was on the right track. Lincoln walking alongside the women in the garden admiring his beloved lemon tree, cavorting cheerfully with the energy-draining Mary Todd, and defiance in wanting to attend "Our American Cousin" are just some of the vignettes presented in luxurious vividity. All in all, one of the most entertaining reads I have had the pleasure to experience. A masterful look into a world past.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for any Lincoln fan!
This book was one of the most illuminating and exhillerating of any books dedicated to Lincoln I have read. The insights provided, as well as the detail of each moment, are as good as any written word on the subject. This book is a must read for any Lincoln fan curious about his last moments of life, and of the men who conspired to take that life. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Birth Of A Legendary Team
In the all-time gallery of Beatles photographs, there are several that have achieved iconic status. The one on the cover of this book is probably the earliest. It was taken on July 6th, 1957, and shows John Lennon and his original group, the Quarrymen, performing at the St. Peter's Parish Church Garden Fete. Among those watching the performance was a young man who would be introduced to Lennon later that day. It was one of those meetings that changed history, because that young man was Paul McCartney.

For all that's been written about the Beatles, it's amazing how much of their history has been obscured. The year of the Lennon-McCartney meeting has been variously published as 1955 and 1956, in addition to the correct 1957. In this volume, O'Donnell gets the year right--and a lot more. "The Day John Met Paul" is a vivid, hour-by-hour recreation of that momentous day in music history. O'Donnell's exhaustive research also allows the reader to understand the city of Liverpool, the skiffle music craze, and all the other elements of the world of 1957 that came together to create the Beatles. O'Donnell pulls this all together with a spellbinding storytelling technique. "The Day John Met Paul" is a must for anyone who wants a better understanding of the birth of the Beatles.--William C. Hall

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book ever written about the Beatles!
"The Day John Met Paul" reconstructs one day in the lives of the Beatles: July 6, 1957, the day that Lennon and McCartney met in Liverpool. This book really makes you feel as if you're actually there, watching it happen! You think you're in Liverpool! I've read a lot of Beatles books, starting with Hunter Davies' authorized book in the 60s, but this one takes it all. It's right up there with books by Coleman and Lewisohn--no, it's even better. You won't be able to put the book down

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful gem
I couldn't stop reading once I started this gem, and of the many Beatles books, I'd rate this as one of the best. For pure literary artistry, it ranks high: the descriptions are vivid and bring you completely into that fateful day (one moment stands out in which the Quarrymen go on their second, evening, show and a minute into the set, a rare Liverpool lightning storm sweeps through the town, knocking out the power, leaving John and his bandmates in darkness for a moment...
the proverbial, but in this instance real, "lightning flash" of greater things to come?!)
Definitely recommended to any Beatles fan.

3-0 out of 5 stars Odd book
This book describes an important day, to be sure, and does so with careful research into all that is known about that particular day. Unfortunately, there isn't quite enough known to make a whole book out of, and the author is forced to pad the book with seemingly irrelevant details like the barometric readings of each hour of the day, simply because these facts are available. A little bit of the book necessarily seems like speculation, and reads like fiction - "he wiped his forehead" or some such unknown detail. Where it sticks to first-hand accounts of what happened that day, the book is a welcome triumph and an amusing read for obsessed fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars One Of The Best Beatles Books Out There
Through descriptions only, the author traces the events that led to Lennon and McCartny's first meeting. The descriptions are amamzing. You get a very clear picture of the day. Also the book gives insight into the personalities of John and Paul. He also uses words from the time and place to set the mood. This book was amazing. He really did his research, and it shows. This is worth reading for any Beatles fan. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Favorite in our School
Dr. King is a favorite hero among elementary school children. This book is the perfect way to introduce them to the life and philosophy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The language is simple and the illustrations are interesting. I've found that although students know the "Happy Birthday" song, they aren't aware that Stevie Wonder wrote the song as a tribute to Dr. King. We always end our read aloud by singing a chorus of the song.

5-0 out of 5 stars An effective picture book on an important American leader
"Happy Birthday, Martin Luther King" fills a need for effective picture books for young readers about this important American leader. The scratchboard illustrations, although unusual for this format, create a vibrancy that enhances the text.

This narrative revolves around the statement: "The Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., is famous because he helped our country change some of its laws." Then in simple language it goes on to explain some of the laws he helped change.

It goes on to say, "Poor people, rich people, white people, black people, and people from all around the world listened when Martin Luther King spoke." Of course, there is mention of his 1963 speech in Washington, D.C., where his "dream was that people everywhere would learn to live together without being mean to one another."

This is an excellent book to read aloud to younger students, although as a school librarian, I have seen it used effectively up to the 5th grade (like another reviewer here). Another good title that covers some of the same territory for young readers is "A Picture Book of Martin Luther King, Jr.," by David A. Adler.

4-0 out of 5 stars First Grade Teachers......A book for you!
I've been searching for a short read about Martin Luther King, Jr. that would excite my first grade students and keep them focused on the background of this great American. The illustrations are lovely and the size of the book is perfect for classroom storytime.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a very good book about a very good man.
I am a fifth grader at North Hills Traditional Academy.

I like this book because it tells how Martin Luther King grew up. And it was sweet how he grew up.

I like the book because the pictures are colorful and the story is sweet.

The thing I really like about the book is that it tells sweet things about his personal life, not just his public life.

Mostly, I really like it because it tells how he grew up and about his friendship with a little white boy.

It's really clever because it shows what Martin Luther King was like when he was young.

It's a great book. I think you should read it. And I know that you will enjoy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A gentle tribute to a giant.
As an elementary school librarian I liked this book because it can be read and appreciated by children from first grade to fifth grade. It has a simple, gentle approach to Dr. King's life from his birth to his death. The students love the "scratchboard" method that the illustrator used for the beautiful artwork. Jeanne Feeney ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect
This book is perfect. I discovered it at my local library while working on my children's literature review file. I read it and was floored by how great it was and how I would not rest until I owned a copy of my very own. The book is tall and narrow just like the man himself. I especially liked the pictures of Abraham as a little boy. In so many other books, even children's books, Mr. Lincoln is portrayed as looking gruff his entire life. In this book, he smiles and grins and is adorable just like any other little boy. The book also has small ancedotes about his life which make Abraham more real to young children. The text handles the assassination in a way that is not as scary to young children. One of the most moving pictures is Lincoln's funeral train passing a field where both a black and white man were working, side by side, but had stopped to bow their heads. I read this book to a Kindergraten class and they were enchanted. I highly recommend this book for any classroom or school library. Enjoy! ... Read more

Book Description

More than a biography, To the Mountaintop is the history of a turbulent epoch that changed the course of American and world history. Moral warrior and nonviolent apostle; man of God rocked by fury, fear, and guilt; rational thinker driven by emotional and spiritual truth -- Martin Luther King Jr. struggled to reconcile these divisions in his soul. Here is an intimate narrative of his intellectual and spiritual journey from cautious liberal, to reluctant radical, to righteous revolutionary. Stewart Burns draws not only on King's speeches, letters, writings, and well-reported strategizing and activities, but also on previously underutilized oral histories of key meetings and events, which present a dramatic account of King and the movement in the crucial years from 1955 to 1968.

In a striking departure from earlier books on Martin Luther King Jr. and the civil rights movement, Burns focuses on King's biblical faith and spiritual vision as fundamental to his political leadership and shows how these threads wove together a "single garment of destiny," making King the most important social prophet of the twentieth century. King is not portrayed as a lone exalted hero, butas the heart of a fabric of principled leadershipthat stretched from his closest colleagues to the movement's foot soldiers on the streets. This book stresses his shaping by other leaders -- heroic figures such as Bayard Rustin, Ella Baker, James Bevel, Bob Moses, and Marian Wright Edelman -- and his conflicted relationships with John and Robert Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson.

To the Mountaintop is uniquely powerful in presenting actual conversations between King and others, and in showing how King's public words often revealed his private torment. Burns provides a uniquely realist portrait of King and the civil rights movement by revealing the vital but neglected religious character of the story, and by demonstrating how King profoundly experienced the movement as a sacred mission following a path of liberation and sacrifice pioneered by Moses and Jesus.

Book Description

Illinois may claim to be the “Land of Lincoln,” but it was Kentucky—the state of this future president’s birth—that shaped his personality and continued to affect his life at every stage.

Lincoln spent the first seven years of his life in Kentucky. His wife was from the Bluegrass state, as were each of the women with whom he had romantic relationships. All three of his law partners were Kentuckians, as was his lifelong best friend.

During the Civil War, Lincoln is reputed to have said, “I hope to have God on my side, but I must have Kentucky.” Recognizing Kentucky’s importance as the bellwether of the four loyal slave states, Lincoln accepted the commonwealth’s illegal neutrality until Unionists secured firm control of the state government.

Yet even loyal supporters disagreed with some policies, most notably his attitude towards slavery. Lincoln urged the commonwealth to adopt a scheme of gradual, compensated emancipation, a position so unpopular that Kentucky voted for George B. McClellan in the 1864 presidential election, one of only three states to do so. It was not until the twentieth century that Kentuckians fully recognized and accepted his greatness.

Written for a general audience, LINCOLN OF KENTUCKY reflects the latest scholarship on Lincoln, Kentucky, and the numerous connections between the two before, during, and after the Civil War. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Coram Deo
"Man before God," that sums up Luther's resultant reformation in theology. Brecht in this volume of three, takes us into the context of this change and the resultant history thereof.

It is marvelously rich in its scope and depth, and written fairly and with good style. Originially in German, here it is aptly translated by James L. Schaaf.

One will receive fine insights into Luther's theology in this volume from his days at Erfurt through to the Diet of Worms.

Excellent Luther reading for those so inclined. All three volumes highly commended for your persual.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, positivistic bio by conservative German prof
Brecht's biography (3 volumes--this is volume one) was the first comprehensive biography in our century that fully explored the later Luther and is also the only Luther biography that tracks every single thing Luther ever wrote. If you are reading something by Luther and want to know the context, this is the place to look. It's readable and takes a conservative position on all of the major controversies. Beware, though: Brecht simply is not interested in source critique. ... Read more

As John Lennon said to Playboy in 1980, "I like to write about me, because I know about me." John Lennon: Whatever Gets You Through the Night is a song-by-song analysis of every song Lennon wrote and recorded after the Beatles breakup in 1970 until his death in 1980.

In his songs he explored the traumas of his childhood, the bitter legacy of the Beatles, his love for Yoko, his infidelities, and his insecurity. There are also the classic anthems of social protest, like "Give Peace a Chance" and "Power to the People." Even his choice of covers like "Stand by Me" and "Be-Bop-A-Lula" tells much about his musical roots. Finally there are Lennon's accounts of his domestic contentment and optimism for the future. ... Book Description

The "official" version of John’s five-year tenure as househusband was one of domestic bliss. In reality, Lennon’s daily life at the Dakota drifted between contradictory desires and minor obsessions—all magnified by the tedium of isolation.

"Nowhere Man" is an intimate journey through Lennon’s last years, carrying us from his self-imposed seclusion to his re-entry into public life with the making of "Double Fantasy." Rosen does not let us go until we’ve faced the abrupt and tragic fate of one of the most creative minds of our time. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Highly readable
Rosen charts the last 5 years of this musical genius and more particularly the last year of his life. The story of his quest is quite dramatic, as all the direct research material that he acquired initially was stolen and he had to start again from scratch without the direct source material. The book is thus based on public writings and interviews, the historical record, the music and conversations with staff, business associates, family, friends and lovers of Lennon, including Yoko, Sean and Julian.

He retraces Lennon's steps through Liverpool, London, New York and Bermuda and tries to paint a picture of daily life in the Dakota building overlooking Central Park. It is interesting to know that John read the 3 New York Dailies but also loved the supermarket tabloids like the National Enquirer, Midnight Globe and the National Star. The book is quite detailed on the recording process of the Double Fantasy album.

The last chapters narrate the murder of Lennon by Mark Chapman and the trial, at which Chapman quoted from Salinger's The Catcher In The Rye.

It is an interesting book but it must be noted that lots of it is based on the author's imagination and shouldn't be taken as fact. A gripping read, nevertheless, and the text is made accessible to students of Lennon's life by a thorough index.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life after The Beatles
Previous reviews discredit author Robert Rosen because he states in the beginning of the book that in the midst of going through JL's diaries and taking notes in order to create the book, the diaries were stolen by Rosen's friend and JL's former personal assistant Fred Seaman. Rosen admits that much of the book has been written based on what he remembers reading from Lennon's diaries, notes he has taken from the diaries, conversations with people close to Lennon, and his imagination. However, at the end of the book, Rosen states that since the first edition was published, the diaries have been returned to him and a new edition, this edition, was created. By reading this, you'll find that JL was up to more than baking bread and playing with Sean during his seclusion from 1975-80. His daily routine is completely laid out for us by Rosen. JL often recorded the exact time he awoke each morning and what the weather was like. He was picky about his weight and what he ate. Like all of us, he had a difficult time staying on a diet. He became so bored at the Dakota that he taught himself to program dreams and would sleep much of the day. He and Yoko lived strictly by their horoscopes and Mercury Retrograde. The power of numbers was also something they lived by. For instance, the significance of the number 9 in John's life. He and Sean were born on October 9th. The Dakota is on 72nd Street (7+2 = 9). They lived in apartment 72. The Beatles first appeared on the Ed Sullivan show on February 9th... there's a lot more that the book goes into. They consulted a psychic daily when making business or personal decisions. The psychic, or Oracle, as John and Yoko called him, was justafiably fired by Yoko after John's murder... if he was that good, wouldn't he have been able to warn them that a psycopath was stalking John? We learn that John loved May Pang up until his tragic death and he often fantasized about her. His time with her called "the lost weekend" was actually 18 months and it consisted of sex, sex, and more sex. The author also gives us an idea of mark David Chapman's daily routine and his schedule on December 8, 1980. The book concludes with kind of a "where are they now" section that discusses Julian, Sean, Yoko, Cynthia Lennon, May Pang, and more. Very easy to read and recommended for those who want to know more about a day in the life of John Lennon.

5-0 out of 5 stars MUST LENNON READ
This book is a must read for any John Lennon fan. This really gives a great discription of his seclusion days in the Dakota. It really showed him how commited he was to Sean and Yoko. I still believe he was a psycho, but I have a better understanding after reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Lennon Book I have read
This book of about 208 pages of text took me a few hours to read. I couldn't put it down! I was so happy that the author showed that John, even though he wasn't the nicest person, also had some good qualities. Other books I have read completly make John out to be a heartless monster. Also the book was beleivable, and it left me satisfied that I was being told the truth. There wasn't a dull moment in this book, and in my opinion,is by far the best representation of John's secluded years. This is a great book for any Lennon fan.

3-0 out of 5 stars Basically written by an obcessive fan...
There are things about how this book was written, the way the info was obtained and the author's bizarre quest to "get inside" Lennon's head that are off-putting and tend to make me take this book with a heaping handful of sodium chloride. The author claims he has distilled the essence of the man's last year by allegedly analyzing Lennon's pilfered diaries, starving himself down to John Lennon's weight and chasing after former servants of the Lennons. I would say this book does give us a picture of a person who lived a very strange life but whether that person is or is not Lennon, really, who can say? It is an interesting picture. Certainly a disticnt perspective that diverges wildly from the domesticated, retiree superstar Lennon like to style himself as. So it's an interesting read but the author is trying painfully hard to show us how well he knew a man he never actually met. It smacks of wishful thinking. There's something about it that feels forced and kind of...fictional. ... Read more

Book Description

Carl Sandburg adapted his acclaimed four-volume biography into a one-volume account of the civil war. Our nation had its unity hammered out in storm. Sandburg's story of those years takes in campaigns and generals, common soldiers in their daily struggles, politics behind battle lines and the unbreakable faith in high and low places. It is a tragic and inspiring narrative, told by one of the great figures of American literature. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great military history book
Very well writen book. A very interesting and enjoyable reading. No pictures, though. But the text is complemented by some draws of the battle scenes and a lot of maps showing troop movements and armies strategies. Slightly biased towards the Union side. Not in the sense of endorsing Union ideas as opposed to the confederates, but rather in the sense of spending a much larger number of pages describing the political and military background of the north, with fewer attention to the south.

Recommendable reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars War and politics combined
What a wonderful book. All the poetic writing of Sandburg in a very informative study of the Lincoln Administration during the Civil War. You will find less details on specific battles but many more details on the politics and behind the scenes characters. You won't want to put this one down. Get to know Lincoln, his Cabinet and his Generals. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A brilliant writer's showcase
The Portable Abraham Lincoln is just that, a small book packed with nothing but Lincoln's words and ideas, from the famous debates with Stephen Douglas to his immortal 2nd Inaguaral Address.

Mixed throughout the speeches are letters, both public and private, which reveal his inner thoughts and animating philosophy. Included is his short and moving letter to Mrs. Lydia Bixby, featured in the movie Saving Private Ryan, which is the most eloquent expression of patriotic grief I have ever read.

The book is organized in themes, from his emergence of a polictian to his writings as Chief Executive and as Commander-in-Chief, and ending up with Fate.

This book is for people who want to go beyond the soundbytes featured in documentaries; it places those famous phrases in the context of the entire speech and the commentary is kept to a minimum, showing respect for the reader. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My First Lincoln Book
I am 38 years old and my father bought me this book when we visited the Lincoln birthplace when I was approximately 6 years old. I still read it from time to time. This book started me on a lifetime desire to learn more about the man called "Abe". The book is well written and takes you from birth to his assassination (which is taken up by less than a page.) I found it fascinating when I was younger and, as I said, I still read it now and then. I have over 50 books on Lincoln and this is still one of my favorites. If you have a young son or daughter that likes to read, let them try this one, I think they might just do as I did the other day. My father is now 72 and visited and I showed him the book and thanked him again as I recalled the day he bought it for me.

I would heartily recommend this book for anyone, but it is geared toward children. (I would actually say from 9-12) depending on how much they like to read.

3-0 out of 5 stars Its preety cool I like it
It is one of those vivid and accurate biographies, which can not become old-fashioned with the years. The book describes the early boyhood and young manhood of Abraham Lincoln. It describes the long and not easy way, which Lincoln had to overcome to stay in history as the great and humane American President of the Civil War Years. I underlined the facts, which impressed me the most. Young Abe was the best wrestler for many miles along the midwestern coast. Several years ago I wondered: why sports should be important for politicians? They should be bright in something else - intellectwise. But now I understand that you have to be either in boxing or in karate or in wrestling like Lincoln when you are young. This will help you to overcome numerous defeats when you become older and go into political fights without any rules. Another fact from Lincoln's biography shocked me. He would walk miles to borrow a book. There was no Internet; there were no even libraries in the area where he lived. Why would he go for miles and I am sure it was not always easy for him. How many of my friends would go for miles to borrow a book? I do not know. In addition, the second thing about it. His parents were illiterate; they could not write or read. How and from whom he would know that you have to read books? I found out that one person influenced Abe a lot. That person was his teacher named Zachariaah Riney. From Riney Lincoln got a habit to read aloud to him and would do it for the rest of his life. The third fact from his biography is amazing. Lincoln read every newspaper, which he could find. I ask myself: do I always read New York Times, which I find at home? Alternatively, I prefer to watch cartoons with my brother Kevin. When I think about all of this I come to a sad conclusion: I will never become the President of the great country. However, I hope that at least I will become the Chief of Justice of the Supreme Court. The will power, this is what comes to my mind when I think about Lincoln while reading Sterling North's book. The life was not easy for him. However, he never gave up. I know that life is not easy for anyone. However, most people give up. In addition, they do not become the great Presidents. I was trying to find out what else influenced Lincoln and helped him to become what he became in the future. I am sure it was the environment of Cucumber Trail. It was a small place but Abe could see a larger world from his cabin. All sorts of travelers were passing by their cabin telling all kinds of stories about their life. Pioneers seeking for new land soldiers and even slaves in chains. It reminds me about the city where I live - New York. You can meet the entire world here and know much more about life if you are willing to talk to all these people like young Lincoln used to do. In addition, the last thing, which determined the future of Lincoln, was that his family moved a bit. This was giving to him an exciting feeling of constant adventure. I am sure that this feeling is extremely important for any politician otherwise he becomes and old and boring mosquito who fly's around and disturbs people with his monotonous songs. ... Read more

Book Description

1920. Dr. Hill's present work brings Lincoln before us as a man, splendid in his strength of purpose, unshaken by popular clamor, humane, sympathetic, and farseeing; a man who understood and appreciated the problems of life, the passions and the weaknesses of his fellow men, strong because of his trials and triumphs; a great leader - so great as to be without jealousy; humble, because of his knowledge and experience, forgetful of self in his desire to best serve his country and mankind. ...
