5-0 out of 5 stars The most complete reference on Marilyn Monroe
As a Marilyn fan I found this to be one of the most extensively researched books on her life and the circumstances surrounding her death. Published in 1987, long before "The Marilyn Encyclopedia" by Adam Victor. The Unabridged Marilyn by Randall Riese and Neal Hitchens is a must have for any fan of monroe. This book lists everything her complete autopsy report to the actresses that have portrayed monroe, or monroe based characters on the stage and screen. This book also contains comprehensive lists and reviews of practically all the books on monroe that had been written up to point when this book was published. It is obvious that the authors of this book have a great respect for monroe and have definitely done her justice in the careful and comprehensive research of this excellent reference book on one of the most intriguing, intelligent and beautiful women who ever lived. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars It hit the right note for me
I found this book useful as a homeschooling mother attempting to expose my children to classical music and make sense, for myself, of a wide world for which I haven't (up till now) been able to find a decent map. I had eight years (years ago) of piano lessons, very little listening experience during the time I took them, and definitely nobody ever sat down and said things like "listen how the piano comes in here, plays for a few bars, and then you expect it to break into the second major theme of this piece--but Mozart plays a little joke here, he starts out playing it in such-and-such a minor key which isn't really substantial enough to go on for too long, so then he gets down to business and changes it back into a major key."  (I'm paraphrasing Harris here.)  Could I say I've been listening-challenged most of my life and I really do need someone to spoon-feed me with some of those details?  Mozart, for me, was nice to listen to and got me through eight hours of labour, but I've never seen one of his concertos written out blow-by-blow.

I also like this book as an introduction to listening to classical music in general.  What to listen for, as the title says.  Why on earth this concerto is supposed to be better than that one.  Why Mozart decided to do this for twenty bars instead of something completely different.  I liked Harris's comment that the Piano Concerto #21 would give you--if you listen carefully enough--enough listening for a whole lifetime.  (The same idea as being able to read Jane Austen repeatedly and enjoy her books more each time even though you already know what happens.)

Maybe some *would* find Harris's descriptions either overly technical (I didn't think so, though I do know some terminology from music theory, like "dominant" and "tonic" which does help with what he's saying) or patronizing (if you naturally know how to listen to what he's doing) as the review says.  However, for me (as the mom and rather ignorant "teacher" here), he seemed to hit the right note.

P.S.  I think the Kirkus Review should have said Harris worked for the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation), not for CBS. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Marx's political thought as its best
Many consider this work as Marx's best effort towards political philosophy. While the Communist Manifesto and the Critique os the Gotha Programme are also classics in marxian political thought, this bookspresents the best and most profound theoretical analysis. Just as the twopanphlets above mentioned, this one came up as an "writing ofoccasion", but more than a pamphlet this is a book, and a classicalone. If the Manifesto should be the gateway to marxian political thought, the Brumaire is the book for those who wish to deepen their knowledge onmarxian political conceptions. A must for anyone concerned with politics ingeneral. ... Read more

Sixties media theorist Marshall McLuhan understood the implications of emerging mass media on society. This book revisits McLuhan's insights in the wake of our digital communications and technological progress. How have his concepts held up? Very well indeed, apparently, as we see in this book, which presents excerpts of McLuhan's work and commentary from today's thinkers about media, including Lewis Lapham, Neil Postman, and Robert Fulford.McLuhan has been called the patron saint of the digital revolution, and this book is a testament and proof that he deserves the title. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Now that you know, go use the knowledge.
Without trying to undermine the insights of McLuhan himself, I think that this book represents just another episode in the 'everybody loves Marshall' series. Similar to 'Digital McLuhan' by Levinson, this book is crawling with remarks stating how great and wonderful McLuhan was and that it is such a big loss for the world as we know that he's dead. I sincerely wish that - as McLuhan put it himself - the comments would engage more in a dynamic discours on his insights and thoughts and would try to make something out of it. But no, I find myself flipping through oodles of pages for the simple reason that it just contains one of those trival McLuhan-anecdotes/memorabilia. Supposedly McLuhan made it to the top ten of all-time thinkers - such as Nietzsche, Kant, Plato etc. Sure, the insights provided by him are pretty slick, but one has to look for them since most of the books concern the opinions of others that would also like to say a thing or two. It's like a bunch of groupies standing at the far end of a stage thinking that they now too are famous. As far the rest of the book is concerned, there are some nice quotes from McLuhan himself that could very well change your perspective on things happening in our world today. It provides some interesting insights and line of thought for further study. Respect goes out to the extensive bibliography that make it easier to trace back his work. It is truly 'McLuhan for the coffee-table', but mind you, there might be a lot of uninvited guests.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book, A Hot Medium
Forward through the Rearview Mirror: Reflections on and by Marshall McLuhan can be considered one of the greatest tributes McLuhan could have ever received. By preserving the particular organization, writing style, and design McLuhan used in The Medium is the Massage and Global Village, editors Paul Benedetti and Nancy DeHart are able to keep his soul and ideology alive. Insights not only from McLuhan himself, but also from many other media theorists who react and share their experiences about the readings, are the editor's elements to explain what was going on deeply inside McLuhan's mind.

As the MTV programming, this book has a continuous flow in which each chapter looks like a new video clip, which is totally related with the preceding, and flows directly into the following. However, instead of creating these connections with complete paragraphs and nice connectors, the editors choose to throw isolated pieces of pictures, paragraphs and quotations. It is the inner most meaning of every written and visual piece what makes a unified theory out of this book. A new way of communication which McLuhan would define as "Any new structure for codifying experience and moving information, be it alphabet or photography, has the power of imposing its structural character and assumptions upon all levels of our private and social lives" (106). Therefore, a chapter named "Violence and Identity" will start with a two-page-black and white picture of a Ku Klux Klan's ritual followed by a quotation: "Violence, whether spiritual or physical, is a quest for identity and the meaningful. The less identity, the more violence." On the next page, a picture of a ten-year-old child wearing latex gloves and a gun in each hand; then, McLuhan's theory is introduced with big blue letters: "IT'S WHY THEY HAVE TO KILL," and so forth. This continuous fluidity of meaningful images and writings, involves the audience in an exciting rhythm, making it interact and experience what McLuhan was trying to say by "The Medium is the Message."

Instead of having a defined introduction, body and conclusion, Forward through a Rearview Mirror is composed of three different types of writing: biographical information, writings by McLuhan, and writings on McLuhan. Each one of them is placed by the editors to ease the reader's understanding of McLuhan's speech. Information about his background, life, and surroundings is provided by a timeline that covers his most important years: his experiences at different stages of his career, the birth of his own family, and his social life. All these factors influenced his way of analyzing our culture. From interviews, speeches, and books, Benedetti and DeHart quote McLuhan to provide objective information about his insights. Because most of his citations are abstract aphorisms, the audience can read his words either superficially or deeply, stimulated by the adventure of discovering his hidden insights, always present in his works. However, the reader is not alone in this adventure. Other media theorists such as John Fraser or Lewis Laphom share their experiences when reading the philosopher. Moreover, as the biographical information, these media producers also help to guide the reader by providing him/her with different analysis and points of view towards McLuhan. Although the book doesn't follow the conventional three-part linearity, it seems custom made for the rushing reader of the nineties. It doesn't matter on which page we open Forward through the Rearview Mirror. It can always provide an interesting analysis of our own society.

However, Paul Benedetti and Nancy DeHart do not only keep McLuhan's organization and writing style, but also preserve his idea of convey insights using the visual medium. Therefore, Forward Through the Rearview Mirror is designed to the image of McLuhan's major works The Medium is the Massage and Global Village. These two books submerge the reader into a multidimensional medium of meaningful abstract and figurative visuals. For instance, the editors create the same type of metaphors that McLuhan employed in his publications, by explaining the world's current globalization with ten bottles of Coca-Cola all written in different languages. Moreover, as Marshall McLuhan's last works, the unconventional format of this book also stands out in the reader's library. While both the medium is the massage and Global Village are smaller than any standard size book, Forward through the Rearview Mirror is wider and shorter than any conventional book.

Forward through the Rearview Mirror shows the complete involvement of Paul Benedetti and Nancy DeHart in McLuhan's life and ideas. Following Marshall McLuhan's guidelines, they carefully place each element in their book to create an outstanding piece. From its outside cover to its inner most meaning, this book breaks all standards, thus, draws the attention from an audience willing to find a new and high-quality product. Guided by McLuhan's print media by juxtaposing significant images and phrases to create movement and rhythm. When experiencing this book, the reader combines the sound of his reading and the meaningful visuals inside his mind, creating an audio-visual medium out of Forward the through the Rearview Mirror. If this phenomenon is achieved, McLuhan's theory is confirmed: "It is man who is content of the message of the media, which are extensions of himself" DeHart and Benedetti understand McLuhan, preserving his thoughts alive, and honor him in their piece of art.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Concice McLuhan
I think the reviewer below summed it well in his subject line saying "McLuhan for the coffee table." Essentially this book is a list of one-liners and ideas of McLuhans. Snippets and paragraphs from books and articles. Could very well be for the beginner, but without explanitory notes (but with pictures); while it could also be for the person already well versed in McLuhans thoughts. Either way, I found it a great book as I find his thinking fascinating, curious and many times humerous. Well presented in large paperback format with slick paper and color photos, this book is a quick and easy McLuhan treat.

5-0 out of 5 stars McLuhan for the coffee table.
If McLuhan is new to you, and/or if you have a short attention span, this is the one to pick up. McLuhan's timeless insights into the evolution of man's synthesized environment are juxtaposed with in-your-face photographs and artwork that serve as indisputable evidence of the truth of his analysis. Reading this book at 30,000 feet, I was struck at just how clearly McLuhan is able to penetrate the distraction, distortion, and pre- conceptions endemic to modern technical civilization. The book is indeed like a high altitude surveillance flight over the electomagnetic infrastructure of our age. The combination of images and text have a synergy imploring the reader to understand the accelerating importance of man's media in shaping his behavior. Serve with "Propaganda", by Jacques Ellul, and "Manufacturing Consent", by Noam Chomsky and Edward S. Herman. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The literary hodgepodge of Madonna
This book contains 51 different articles, thesis', poems and rants about Madonna, by authors varied as Camille Paglia and Vincent Canby to Henry Rollins and Liz Smith. It includes various one page cartoons and strips from "Mad" magazine and the Village Voice, and also in the mix are Rolling Stone poll results, a David Letterman top ten list about "Truth or Dare", and Sandra Bernhard writing about her Madonna dreams from her book "Confessions of a Pretty Lady". This book is chock full of more useless information about Madonna that us fans crave, new and old...The information covers roughly the 1984-1991 era (her most active IMHO) and is very entertaining, though not for the average reader. Madonna fans will find this book a great resource and companion to "The Madonna Companion", also a collection of written works about Madonna, though it is more on the scholarly edge. So this book is recommended to Madonna collectors, and all others...Borrow it from your own "Madonna freak". ... Read more

Book Description

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., is one of the most celebrated figures of the twentieth century. A crusader for nonviolent social justice, he led African Americans in their demands for equality through peaceful protests during one of the most tumultuous times in recent history.

Set against key moments in the civil rights movement, here is the story of the powerful, eloquent spiritual leader and his belief that nonviolence could be used to overcome racial discrimination.

Walter Dean Myers's moving narrative and Leonard Jenkins's compelling paintings portray a vivid and striking image of the man who moved American society closer to the ideals of freedom and fairness. Dr. King's dream that all Americans would be judged by their individual actions and character is one we still cherish today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Intimate , personal, story of Marilyns early years
I'm a huge Marilyn collector/fan and have read many books about her life. This is one of the best books from someone who really knew her, along with the book "My Sister Marilyn". This is her first husbands story. It is touching and sad as well as being a tribute to a beautiful person that Marilyn/Norman Jean was. I read things in this book I've never heard before about Marilyns early years and It was easy to read and very enjoyable, It's a must for any fan.I'm so greatful to "Jim" for sharing his story!

3-0 out of 5 stars My Review
I thought this is book was pretty good but I find some things in the book hard to belive. This is the first book I have read about Marilyn Monroe so I can't compare to any other book. But just like in the t.v. movie "Norma Jean and Marilyn", I don't think everything that they say is true.

3-0 out of 5 stars Overblown account of marilyn..
This is certainly an interesting Book...painting marilyn as a neurotic, spoiled, champagne swilling slob...and also as a sweet, misunderstood and lonely woman.
At it's worst this book recounts marilyn's Life (standard stuff) and claims that marilyn gave birth to a baby boy....at it's best it gives a clear picture of marilyn's marriage to Arthur Miller, her apparent lack of real friendships and a look at the reality of marilyn's day to day Life.
There are also revealing glimpses of marilyn's thoughts about her career and herself.
This would make a hell of a movie!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Hard to take seriously
This is an interesting book indeed. Unfortunately I find most of what's written very hard to believe. The way Pepitone describes Monroe goes against almost everything else that has ever been written about her. The book paints her as a lazy, dumb, immature and half crazy child. I kept an open mind while reading it but when the author claimed that Monroe had a child in her early teens I took the rest of the book with a grain of salt. If you don't really care about how accurate the content is then go ahead and read it to get a good chuckle if nothing else. Otherwise, I wouldn't bother.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wish I could get my hands on this book again!
I was pretty young when I read this book but it left an impact on me. One that I wish I could come to terms with once I read this book again. I lent it to someone and never got it back. Once I saw that it was out of print, it didn't surprise me at all. It was a pretty outrageous look at the world's most beloved bombshell by none other than the person who took the most care of her. That is what I found to be the most provocative of all. That her own friend would write such personal stories. I found it to be insightful, if true.

5-0 out of 5 stars A memoir of Marilyn from a maid's POV
When first released, "Marilyn Monroe Confidential" was widely and, IMO, unfairly criticized for passing mentions of MM's habits. However, taken as a whole, the book is warm and sympathetic and it is evident Lena Pepitone thinks of MM as a good person. Still, it is a maid's eye view and as the old saying goes, "No man is a hero to his valet." If Pepitone is telling the truth, MM frequently went without showers, baths, and -- in private -- clothes and lacked the usual embarressment connected with burping and breaking wind. Seen in context, these are minor personal flaws in a woman who was good-hearted, generous, and kind. ... Read more

Book Description

Hollywood icon, sex goddess, glamour queen, complex, scared and vulnerable young woman, Marilyn Monroe offered a variety of faces to the world before she died. To imagine how Marilyn might have matured into wise, graceful and gorgeous old age, author and playwright Maggy Anthony wrote Impossibly Blonde: Marilyn at 77.

"Just as her life had cast its spell over my life, her death and the subsequent surrealism of her funeral, which I attended, and the aftermath of conspiracy theories, hints of murder and intrigue in high places, cast its shadow.

"I am attempting to show how even an event of the utmost tragedy can give birth to a creative project and perhaps offer some understanding of this complex woman who has become a symbol of the Eternal Feminine, and who was also very much a woman of her time.

"My play is my prose poem to her, of love, appreciation and regret."

Book Description

The explosive New York Times bestseller-- Madonna

From motherless child to wife and mother, from "boy toy" to fiercely independent diva, Madonna is one of the most remarkable women of our time. With a career that spans two decades and ranges from the scandalous to the transcendent, she is a bigger phenomenon than ever. But who is the private woman behind the public image?

Andrew Morton, whose #1 New York Times bestsellers about Princess Diana and Monica Lewinsky have proven his ability to gain access to insiders who won't talk to anyone else, answers that question in this decidedly unauthorized new biography. Morton's extensive, in-depth interviews with members of Madonna's inner circle-- lovers, friends, and business connection, many of whom have never spoken out before-- allow him to go beyond the carefully constructed myths to unmask the real Madonna. Andrew Morton is able to make startling revelations, among them the real story of Madonna's family background; the events behind the violent attack that changed her views on sex and men; her relationships with Michael Jackson, Prince, John F. Kennedy Jr., Vanilla Ice, and other rock and Hollywood stars; the mystery man she wanted to marry; and the darkest days of her career when she threatened to quit show business. In this fascinating, richly detailed biography, Andrew Morton reveals Madonna in an entirely new light.

5-0 out of 5 stars Call Me Crazy...But I Think Its Very Well Written
I was shocked to see so many readers dissing this book. Granted, its the first Madonna bio I have read, but I felt that it was written with a lot of care and balance. And I couldn't put it down for five seconds. Mr. Morton is not a weak writer, rather he uses restraint, refusing to sensationalize his subject. Yet, Madonna is a sensational character and her life is dramatic enough to enthrall the reader without the overbearing massaging of the author's touch. I think the author achieved a perfect balance between delivering the goods and respecting the privacy of Madonna's intimate encounters, i.e. he does not go into graphic sexual detail concerning her exploits--and that is fine with me. I don't need those fine details, I have an imagination. In short, I think it was okay that he analyze Madonna psychologically, otherwise, where is the content, where is the meaning? We need to remember that she is a struggler, a survivor, that she cuts and bleeds--that she is not larger than life and inhuman. I would have been much more dissapointed to just have been given sensationalistic gossip and facts with no attempt to tie it altogether in a meaningful way. Morton obviously cared about his subject, repects her ballsy choices, though he never fails to point out the concequences, good and bad, that have come from them. I am a fan, but not insane enough to deny that Madonna has come off as a total fool and embarrasment at times. Morton's analysis offers explanations as to why she is simultaneously irresistible and over-the-top annoying. I totally resonate with his insights and highly recommend this fascinating and well-researched book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Andrew Morton can even make Madonna's life seem boring
I am a huge fan of Madonna and was looking forward to an entertaining read...the keyword here is entertaining. Like others have said, Morton's writing is terrible. I know that he is a respected writer of biographies... but this was terrible! I don't know how he did it but he even made Madonna seem boring. The writing didn't flow. Details of later events were thrown in previous chapters and then completed ignored later when they should apply. I felt it was poorly organized and poorly written. Even huge fans will be disappointed. Hopefully Madonna will write her own one day.

4-0 out of 5 stars Even-handed and relatively informative
Morton writes in a pretty straightforward journalistic style about Madonna's life from childhood through to her marriage to Guy Ritchie. As a fan but not an expert on Madonna, I found the book to be very informative, particularly about her early years in NYC. I enjoyed reading about her relationships with people like the Gilroy brothers, and up until reading this book did not realize the extent of her days in NY, for example, that she had played gigs at Max's Kansas City. The info comes off as being very fair to Madonna in terms of her drive and her progress. She is often portrayed as a heartless climber, but Morton paints the picture of a bright personality who is extremely energetic, motivated, and also loving and caring, even if she does crave the spotlight and need to be the center of attention. The book is more telling about her than the typical Madonna mythology we so often hear. He details her generosity with certain friends, and with AIDS charities, her struggle to make her first marriage work, while also citing incidents of cheapness and bitchiness. Also interesting are the descriptions of her various business ventures, and her non-stop work ethic which spills over into every aspect of her life, from songwriting to running six miles and then working out with weights for an hour. My criticism is that, around the 3/4 point, Morton jumps back and forth a bit erratically in time after his initial description of the birth of Lourdes and the making of Evita. Up until that point, the format was chronological. The content of the book, including Morton's analysis of Madonna's personality, makes for a good bio despite the minor flaws of format.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting approach; average execution
Andrew Morton's approach to describing the Madonna phenomenon is interesting in that he attempts to uncover what are the motivations that drive Madonna. I think he succeeds in that -- talking about her drive and insecurity. The book is an interesting read, however it falls short of puting Madonna in a broader perspective -- as a fascinating creation of American culture, as an entrepreneur and one of the notable pop music stars of the late 20th century. Other than her earnings and desire for control, Morton spends little time on the business aspects of Madona's success, which is no less fascinating than her musical accomplishments.

1-0 out of 5 stars ...
This book is so poorly written it's shocking. I lost count of the factual errors, there were at least one on every page. Many of the dates and "facts" are erroneous, he places her in Miami for Thanksgiving 1993 when in fact she was in Australia on tour. One of his so-called 'sources', ex-boyfriend Jimmy Albright, is shown in a photograph with Madonna but guess what? It's not him, it's one of her dancers from the Blond Ambition Tour. If he can make such an obvious mistake like that then how much of the rest of the book are you supposed to believe?

His psyhcoanalysis of Madonna is tiresome to say the least. How can he make such judgments about her character having never met her?

Wait for Madonna's own memoirs. ... Read more

Book Description

On February 21, 1965, Malcolm X knew the end was near. For months he had been outrunning armed Muslims who wanted to kill him for breaking with Elijah Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, and defaming his name. And the strain showed as he moved to the podium in Harlem's Audubon Ballroom where a crowd of four hundred had gathered for a public rally -- only to witness Malcolm's X's violent end.

Malcolm X: The assassination explores the conspiracy theories that found the FBI and CIA responsible for the murder, examines the stories of the two Muslim brothers from a New York mosque who were wrongly convicted of the crime, and provides an in-depth analysis of Malcolm X relationship with Elijah Muhammad and the Nation of Islam.

Now, three decades later, the controversy behind the assassination still rages in today's headlines, and the unresolved circumstances of Malcolm's tragic death continue to create a haunting legacy for us all. ... Read more
