5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Accessible of Marx's Work
This fascinating extended essay was originally prepared as a series of newspaper articles. It is Marx's careful analysis of the hijacking of the 1848 revolution in France by Louis Bonaparte, the nephew and self styled successor of the great Napoleon. Many readers are dimly aware of this work because it is the source of two of Marx's most quoted remarks; "history occurs as tragedy and recurs as farce," and "man makes his future, only not as he chooses." Marx discusses why the 18th Brumaire occurred, how it occurred, and why it succeeded. Marx deployed all his considerable intellectual tools to produce this analysis and the quality of writing is much more accessible than much of his more scholarly work, proof that he could write well. What is most impressive is Marx's use of class based social analysis combined with an incisive understanding of the intersections of class interests, ideology, and even personality. Individuals, both on the right and left, who have reduced Marx's thinking to sterile economic determinism have never encountered this brilliant work. A model of what can be done when Marxist concepts are used as a point of departure rather than a form of theology. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars New Expanded edition is now out from Pathfinder
A new expanded edition of this book has been available since November 2002!
This new edition includes 43 more pages than the previous edition, with the complete text of Malcolm's Speech at Oxford and a more complete text of his speech at the London School of Economics. The expanded introduction together with Jack Barnes' "He spoke the truth to our generation of revolutionists," a memorial speech for Malcolm given in March 5, 1965, provides an excellent short introduction to Malcolm's life and ideas.

There is a six-page index, eight pages of notes, as well as an expanded photo display of 17 pages including Malcolm X with students and young people from Tanzania to Alabama, including a picture of Fidel Castro and Malcolm X smiling together in Harlem in 1960 when they were both still young!

This edition of Malcolm X Speaks to Young People is being produced together with a first-ever Spanish-language edition, entitled Malcolm X habla a la juventud, which is being released simultaneously by Pathfinder Press and by Casa Editora Abril, the publishing house of the Union of Young Communists in Cuba.

5-0 out of 5 stars Malcolm X: the internationalist
Malcolm X Talks to Young People is an immensely relevant and instructive book for the young and the young at heart. His words, spoken to university students in Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States in 1964-65, ring as true today as they did then.

"I just try to face the fact as it actually is and come to this meeting as one of the victims of America, one of the victims of Americanism, one of the victims of democracy, one of the victims of a very hypocritical system that is going all over this earth today representing itself as being qualified to tell other people how to run their country when they can't get the dirty things that are going on in their own country straightened out," he told students at the University of Ghana, May 13, 1964.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rebel Youth :Read This NOW,Then Autoiography
Originally issued as the first Gulf War began,in these pages Malcolm explains how in the Congo the US govt bombed women, men, children, and babies and called THEM terrorists,as he points out,the same as in Vietnam. He shows how it was the U.S. and U.S.-flunky ( "anti-Castro Cubans pilots" ) who were the terrorists in the Congo in the early to mid 1960s. At a time when the word "hero" is twisted so obscenely, it is a breath of fresh clean air to read Malcom's descriptions of the herois Simba fighters of the Congo who tried, and failed to liberate their country from U.S. neocolonial domination after kicking out the Belgian colonizers, and to hear him describe the equally heroic fighters who defeated the Empire in China and Cuba and Vietnam in the same terms. He exposes the use of UN cover for the Yanqui Empire's wars and drive for profits. He explains that these crimes are the doings of a system, the imperialist system ,as he calls it himself. He points out they use the cops to do the same at home :brutalize working people. Malcolm further points out that both the Republican AND the Democratic parties are the twin parties of racism and imperial exploitation. Oh yes, both parties ! He explains how he came to the conclusion that " capitalism is like a vulture...it used to be able to suck anybody's blood...but now it can only suck the blood of the helpless. It's only a matter of time , in my opinion, before it will collapse completely " and how he became prosocialist. He points to the Chinese, Vietnamese, and Cuban revolutions as examples for Blacks - today he would add and we can add, all working people -- to emulate in this country, in our time. And, he makes his stand to fight alongside anyone, any color, who fights to better condtiions for humans on this earth. As the 2nd Gulf War begins, again under UN cover and "inspections" just as the liberals pleaded, as more working people's blood, Iraq and American, for the sake of the oil profits of a tiny few, it is good to be reminded that as, Malcolm says in these pages, " The young generation of whites, Blacks, browns-you're living at a time of revolution." He was right then and he is still right. If you seek serious fundamental social change, you owe it to yourself to buy and STUDY this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Young People Still Need These Words
In these speeches and many others he gave in his last year, Malcolm X spoke to young people. His assassination prevented a nationwide tour of college campuses sponsored by the Young Socialists. What he told young people was not to advance themselves as individuals, but to join the worldwide struggle against imperialism. He told them to fight the capitalist rulers of the USA, to fight against racism and discrimination, to look to revolutionary fighters in Cuba, Africa, and Vietnam for the way forward. Young people still need these words.

5-0 out of 5 stars Malcolm X talks to young people
This is the great message to the people in the United States whether you are liberal or conservative, Domocrat or Republican, if you are looking for some stimilus for your life, I greatly recommend this book. The image of Malcolm X for most of American is very negative. Yet, Malcolm X provide us something very important to live in the society. You will know the Malcolm that you did not get to know from the movie "Malcolm X." ... Read more

Book Description

Profiling 24 of the adult children of the most recognizable figures in the civil rights movement, this book collects the intimate, moving stories of families who were pulled apart by the horrors of the struggle or brought together by their efforts to change America. The whole range of players is covered, from the children of leading figures like Martin Luther King Jr. and martyrs like James Earl Chaney to segregationists like George Wallace and Black Panther leaders like Elaine Brown. The essays reveal that some children are more pessimistic than their parents, whose idealism they saw destroyed by the struggle, while others are still trying to change the world. Included are such inspiring stories as the daughter of a notoriously racist Southern governor who finds her calling as a teacher in an all-black inner-city school and the daughter of a famous martyr who unexpectedly meets her mother’s killer. From the first activists killed by racist Southerners to the current global justice protestors carrying on the work of their parents, these profiles offer a look behind the public face of the triumphant civil rights movement and show the individual lives it changed in surprising ways.

4-0 out of 5 stars A riveting new chapter to America's Civil Rights saga
The fates of those who sacrificed during the 60s to make America a more perfect union were varied; Some were cut down by assassins. Others re-defined the struggle by securing historic victories at the ballot box. Most simply returned to anonymity, choosing to bear the scars of battle in silence.
While many of these heroes remain unsung, the legacies of the more prominent among them have been well-documented in mainstream media outlets dutifully marking civil rights anniversaries as a way of gauging how far we've come since then. In some cases, these stories have now been re-told so often they seem dated and stale.
But John Blake's compelling new book, "Children of the Movement" traces those human blood lines forward and breathes life into these intimate -- but largely unknown-- family portraits. His interviews with the sons and daughters of those who fought for America's soul are at once inspiring, depressing, universal and utterly unpredictable.
Blake's sparing but effective writing frames each vignette, putting them in context without overwhelming you with tons of historical detail that might have detracted from the narrative. His book is not only a pleasure to read, but also informative, captivating and timely.
Most of all, "Children of the Movement" reminds us that while the struggle for civil rights has changed much in a generation, it is still far from over.

5-0 out of 5 stars Portrait of the Heart and Soul of the Freedom Movement
John Blake's book, "Children of the Movement," provides a powerful, if painful, glimpse into the heart and soul of the Freedom Movement of the Sixties, as, an insightful portrait of its legacy, through the lens of some of its children--one of whom is my own daughter, Ericka Abram. Blake's tenderly-written report reveals many common themes in the perspectives and lives of these offspring, the most compelling for me being that Movement parents seemed to have been so committed to our cause and protecting our children from the social ills we fought, we forgot to tell them what and why we were fighting. The resulting common disconnection between parents and children is more broadly reflected in the confusion and despair of today, in dealing with unrelenting racism and poverty and oppression, that stand in the stead of the clarity of purpose and commitment of the past. Blake's book opens the door to a healthy discussion toward healing familial wounds and easing generational divisions so as to bring us together in a new effort to finally find freedom in America.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Written more like a book of short stories than a chapter in America's history I found John Blake's writing style to be descriptive, straight forward, and appealing. Each page was full of substance and very readable. To my surprise I found myself unable to put this book down. I found food for thought and hours of discussion in this work.

John Blake's Children of the Movement gives one a view of the real life struggles of the men and women involved in the Civil Rights Movement. For those who are not familiar with the infamous names an explanation is given of each participant's standing in the movement but more interestingly a glimpse into the personality and humanness of each as well. He then goes a step further and brings a vivid picture of the effect these lives selflessly led had on the children. I was touched by the Black Panther leader who felt that if she saved all black children she would save her own child, a child who so wanted to be important in her mother's life. I was inspired by the daughter who now works by her father's side on the Algebra Project preparing black students for college. I was moved by one man's continued pursuit for justice in the murder of his brother. Each interview reminds us of the struggles of the parents and illustrates how each child was molded by the experience. Children of the Movement brings to light how much was sacrificed to share the Dream. ... Read more

Book Description

Beloved NPR commentator and popular author Andrei Codrescu makes a stunning return to historical fiction, detailing the adventurous life and erotic times of the famed illuminist Giacomo Casanova.

In his national bestseller The Blood Countess, Andrei Codrescu brought to life the bloodthirsty royal Elizabeth Bathory, who embodied nearly all the contradictions of the seventeenth century. Now he depicts the astonishing life of the legendary Casanova, as the old adventurer relives his life while writing his memoirs in a provincial Bohemian castle at the end of the eighteenth century. Far from being defeated by age, Casanova delights in the maidservants, reacts with intellectual vigor to the unfolding of the French Revolution, and collaborates with Mozart on Don Giovanni. Long considered the rhapsodist of an age of aristocratic mirth, scandal, and innumerable affairs, Casanova was also a first-rate intellect who corresponded and argued with Voltaire and Rousseau. His published work, besides the celebrated History of My Life, includes a multivolume fantasy fiction novel that predates and anticipates Jules Verne; translations of Italian classics into French; and a number of plays that were produced on the great stages of Europe.

Casanova's romantic legend overshadowed his literary work, which was, for the most part, not published until 1960. The fate of his writings was nearly as fabulous and intriguing as that of their author. Still, even in abridged, bowdlerized, and fragmentary form, Casanova's memoirs have inspired writers as diverse as Flaubert, Stendhal, Hermann Hesse, and now, Andrei Codrescu. Codrescu's vivid fictional account illuminates the interest we still have in this uncompromising and magical libertine, while it imagines how his life would have continued if Casanova's immortality had extended beyond the literary.

In Codrescu's retelling of the Casanova legend, readers are introduced to an age far less inhibited than our own, and far more interesting in its vices. At once a libertine, a defender of women, a reactionary, a revolutionary, a brilliant observer, and a visionary, Casanova was a man ahead of his time both in thought and in action. Finally, in this inventive and absorbing work, Casanova is given due credit for his writings, his philosophies, and, of course, for the amorous magic that has been made known to so many. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Depressingly, Dolefully Decadent
Giacomo Casanova, 1725-1798, was a real person, an adventurer, a man-about-Europe, a celebrity, a sociopath, rarely worked, attached himself to famous people and institutions, spent time in prison, and had a number of notorious romantic affairs. If he had lived today he would undoubtedly be a frequent guest on talk shows. Now after many years of obscurity, Casanova has had a revival of sorts, and a following of scholars known as "casanovists."

Andrei Codrescu's book, based loosely on the facts of Casanova's life, details the declining years of Casanova, against the backdrop of European history. It is a time of spectacular decadence, the last days of a crumbling feudal aristocracy, the shock waves of the French revolution, and the personal decline of the once notorious Casanova, a man who has had many romantic escapades but has never formed a lasting relationship with a woman. Now he is lonely, disillusioned, desperately trying to achieve immortality through his writings. And in a way, as the author shows, he does.

I love listening to Andrei Codrescu on National Public Radio, but Casanova in Bohemia was something of a letdown. This book will be of interest to casanovists and also to codrescuites, but it is not for everyone. If you enjoy reading about the sexual preoccupations and embarrassing orgies of a lonely old man you might enjoy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Codrescu's Best
Having followed Codrescu's career with abnormal attention over the last twenty five years I have wondered when he would get busy and write his classic. This book finally tips into the mythos. I liked his first two novels -- Blood Countess and Messiah, but here Codrescu opens a panorama of a zeitgeist that somehow still survives from the faded glamor of Venice. "I lived as a philosopher. I die a Christian!" Codrescu is the last of the Draculas -- but his confession that he believes in a Creator makes me ask whether his Dracula mask hides a deeper engagement with the one true God. It is this civil righteousness whose warmth permeates this book and implicitly creates an urban ecotheology based on vials of beautiful blood straight from the nubility of Lutheran Prague.

5-0 out of 5 stars sublime music
The reviewer who couldn't hear the sublime music in Codrescu's "Casanova in Bohemia" must have a tin ear. This is a generous, rich and bitter-funny novel written in some of the best English prose-rhythms I have ever known. Re-read the first sentence, and then read the rest of it out loud. I predict a long literary life for this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Sophomoric Fumbling
Codrescu's work in this book is like a 13-year-old's self-conscious attempt at writing a romance diary. The first sentence alone is as unacceptably ill-wrought as the rest of the writing is embarrassingly over-wrought. Codrescu is a great writer and he should be ashamed. Yikes and yuck.

1-0 out of 5 stars Offended
I did not appreciate this book very much. I felt that the sexual content was inappropriate and overdone. More could have been given to the plot and the historical content and less could have been given to an 80 year old man's perverted exploits.

I was dissappointed in this book completely. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fine intellectual biography
Mr. Gordon concentrates on Mcluhan's intellectual development and shows McL.'s work as a single work in progress built on a unique foundation. It is not as merely gossipy as Marchand's biography, and not for the reader unfamiliar with the world of ideas McL. dealt with. There is nothing of the pop celebrity here, but a serious presentation of the intellectual ground under all of McLuhan's work.

3-0 out of 5 stars I Was Tempted To Escape Into Sleep Far Too Often
I purchased this book because I was interested in learning as much as I could about the enigmatic Marshall McLuhan. Unfortunately, Mr. McLuhan has failed to find his ideal biographer in this work. Marshall McLuhan was the media intellectual from Canada who wrote, taught and spoke presciently of the effects of media on ourselves and our culture. Much of his work was rather heady stuff, and out of the reach of the dillettante. Even his most famous phrase, "the medium is the message" is poorly understood by many, including some who are thought to be blessed with large portions of gray matter. And the author of this biography W. Terrence Gordon can't seem to find the formula for delivering palatable explainations of McLuhan's catchphrases. The book unevenly shifts from the recounting of McLuhan's life, to the development of his groundbreaking research and novel ideas on everything from the ancient Trivium to electronic media, and he never settles into a comfortable pace. One can sense that McLuhan's life was unique, compelling and interesting, but it is rendered dry and antiseptic in this telling, and our author fares even more poorly in attempting to school us in the intellectual legacy of McLuhan, never properly defining terms in some instances, jumping way over our heads in others, and most maddening of all, sticking 80-some pages of notes at the end of the book which would have served us far better as foot-notes or inclusions in the main text. All this having been said, the subject was interesting enough and the materials included specific enough, where I was able to find many interesting paths for further exploration, which made slogging through this ponderous book, worth the effort at the end... But as I said, this fascinating man's life is deserving of a far more interesting and organized writer's efforts. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Weak Justification
This essentially contains the speech that Elijah Muhammad made after Malcolm X's assassination. Mostly for the faithful who still followed Elijah Muhammad as opposed to Malcolm. To fully put this into context, one must have some familiarity with the events surrounding Malcolm's death. As with most of Elijah Muhammad's writngs and/or speeches, it's not likely to appeal to those who do not consider themselves admireres or followers of his. Not likely to win any new converts.

5-0 out of 5 stars La lucha contra el apartheid -- ¡En vivo!

This is a great book, a few pictures are grainy, but 95% are sharp rich and gorgeously clear.
I was shocked that I had not seen some of the images. I collect her images, and have a lot of them on my computer that most people haven't seen. So this is a stellar collection indeed and a must for Marilyn fans. I have the "Marilyn A life in Pictures" and still this book had even more. I do recommend both books highly.

4-0 out of 5 stars All the necessities
This book features pictures from Marilyn's life ranging from her modeling days as Norma Jeane up until her death. You get many of the "classic" Monroe photos here, including the gold dress, the white dress scene from the Seven Year Itch, and several movie stills.Several candid shots are also included as well as some lesser seen ones from photograph sessions.Jane Russell paints an endearing picture of Monroe in the forward. We also get an interview with Monroe. It is a widely known fact that Marilyn embellished parts of her childhood and she does so here, claiming her mother is dead, when Marilyn's mom actually outlived her for more than 30 years.Nevertheless, Monroe appears beautiful, vulnerable, ans sensuous all rolled into one in these images. You get a lot of pics for a reasonable price.

5-0 out of 5 stars great collection of photos
I love this book because it is pure marilyn. The book shows her at her best. There are no conspiracies, scandals or judgements made about her in this book. It is just about the love that she had for the camera. She understood the camera better that anyone I can think of and it is her element, like a fish in water. Many authors write books on her to try to explain who she was,(99% of them never even knew her.) but all you have to do to really know her is study her pictures. They truly reveal every aspect of her, and that's why this book was made.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good place to start for Marilyn photos.
One of the first Marilyn books I got was a compilation of photographs from well-known photographers. It wasn't till later that I got the original primary sources, i.e. books by Eve Arnold, and collections by Bernard Bruno and Bert Stern. So once one gets this collection, one can decide which photographer captured Marilyn's beauty the best, be it Milton Greene, Bernard Bruno, Richard Avedon, Ed Feingersh, or my personal favourite, Andre de Dienes. The photos, both colour and B&W, accompanied by captions, take the reader on a chronological journey from 1945 to her death in 1962.

Well-known photographs include the Tom Kelley photo that led to the notorious nude calendar, her potato sack dress, the photo Andy Warhol used, her wearing the golden dress, and the Life magazine photo. The final picture is not of her but her obituary flashing across Times Square.

Other material include a 1960 interview done with Georges Belmont for the French magazine Marie Claire. She talks mostly about her early life as a child before going into her adult life.Jane Russell, who was her costar in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, does a brief but generous foreword on her recollections.

Other photos include scenes from movies, press conferences, and other occasions. There's an annotated biography and filmography in the rear of the book. Each film entry has the distributing company, year, starring cast, and the name of Marilyn's character. As for the bibliography, I was surprised to see I had nine of the books used.

This serves as a cross-section of photos taken by various photographers as well as a photographic history.Good for beginning MM students, as it was for me back then.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is completely false!!!!!!
After reading Donald Spoto's biography on Marilyn Monroe, I found out that everything in this book is completely false. Slatzer only met Monroe once, during the filming of Niagra, asked to have his picture taken with her, and that was the end of it. His claims that they were married, among other things, only surfaced after her death, in fact more than a decade later. All personal records of Marilyn do not show anything about her having any other contact with the author. Slatzer has made a fortune off of this book that has all false information in it. I do not recommend supporting him by buying it.

4-0 out of 5 stars interesting...
When I finished this book, I truly believed that Marilyn Monroe was murdered (I pretty much believed that anyway). However, I didn't believe some of Slatzer's other claims, such as: he was Marilyn's best friend and confidant all through her career; that they were secretly married in Mexico and only annulled it because of Zanuck's insistence; and that he had privileged information regarding the infamous "red diary." (Interestingly, a book by another supposed career-long friend/lover, Ted Jordan, directly contradicts some of Bob's statements, and Ted also claims to have been her secret special boyfriend during the same time and to have knowledge of the diary in a similar way.) I am grateful for the amount of research Bob put into the mystery of her death, because he does make it hard to believe that she committed suicide. But by bragging non-stop about his intense relationship with Marilyn, he makes his other, more important assertions harder to believe. An important book for fans, but take with a grain of salt!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Marilyn Fans
I cannot say enough about this book. Starting his investigation the day after her death, Robert Slatzer is a wonderful friend of Marilyn's. Very indepth. A perfect companion to this book is The Marilyn Files also by Robert Slatzer.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE DEFINITIVE BOOK ABOUT THE LIFE & DEATH OF MONROE
I wish this book would be reprinted. At the time it was first published it caused a lot of controversy. It has stood the test of time. Many people were "leery" of the assertions that Marilyn Monroe had been murdered, but since this author's long and trying efforts to show the real facts of what happened to Marilyn, many of the real facts he presented to the public in 1974 have been made public. Many people did not want or know whether to believe Slatzer's accounts of Monroe's keeping a diary, and recording her accounts of "what Bobby Kennedy told her". Recently released and published FBI & CIA documents "PROVE" that Slatzer was INDEED RIGHT ABOUT MARILYN & THE KENNEDY BROTHERS. A recently de-classified CIA DOCUMENT BOLDLY STATES THAT IN 1962, "THE CIA WAS AWARE THAT MARILYN MONROE KEPT A SO-CALLED DIARY THAT RECORDED CONVERSATIONS SHE HAD WITH THE THEN ATTORNEY GENERAL, ROBERT F. KENNEDY. THE CONTENTS OF HER DIARY DISCUSSED AMOUNG OTHER THINGS; THE PLOT TO KILL CASTRO; THE FACT THE CIA/GOVERNMENT HAD MAFIA HOODLUMS ON THE PAYROLL;etc. At least this author personally knew his subject and has made countless efforts to clear the smeared reputation the executives at 20th Century Fox Film Corp., gave her, as well as the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office, and The Los Angeles County Coroner's Office placed on her. The Studio at the time of her death, did not make an effort to state they had in fact re-hired MM for "Something's Got To Give", along with the fact they had given her a raise in salary. The Coroner,The D.A.'s Office, and certain higher ups in the LAPD have kept closed mouthed about the truth of her murder and continue this ridiculous behavior today. Even former Deputy District Attorney, John Miner, who witnessed her autopsy, now admits, as Slatzer had written in 1974, that Monroe did not in fact, commit suicide, and DID in fact, have relations with the Both John & Bobby Kennedy and made recordings at the suggestions of her psychiatrist, Ralph Greenson, of said relations. This author is probably the most well informed and possibly the last remaining close confident that Marilyn Monroe had. If there are any more Biographies written on Marilyn Monroe, I hope that Mr. Robert Slatzer is the author. That way, we can set the record straight once again, and hopefully forget about the mis-information that people have been writing for the last 16 or more years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Compelling, Convincing
I read this book years ago and used to quote whole passages from it. The argument that Marilyn was murdered is very strong, and this book came out at a time when the murder/cover-up conspiracy argument was still considered alittle far-fetched.

More information has come out since this book was published, such as her housekeeper admitting that Robert Kennedy HAD been to Marilyn's house the last day of her life. When Slatzer's book came out, the housekeeper was still denying it. But Slatzer had an eye witness account from a neighbor of Marilyn's who had seen Kennedy there that day.

Time has only proven that Robert Slatzer was on the right path, as far as there being a cover-up. As for Marilyn being murdered, you be the judge. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Strathern At His Best
I have made a point of reading each book in Paul Strathern's "--in 90 Minutes" series on philosphers and thinkers as they have been published. His slender volume on Karl Marx represents Strathern at his ironically informed best. Solid information presented with insight and humor. I cannot imagine a better starting point for an introduction to Marx and Marxism. Highly readable. ... Read more
