Book Description

One Last Shot gives Jordan fans the inside scoop they’re looking for on basketball’s greatest legend, with exclusive interviews from NBA executives, players, and coaches. Mitchell Krugel uses his fifteen years of following Michael Jordan’s every move to explain why the man who left the game as The Greatest Player of All Time would risk his unparalleled legend to play again.

After delivering the Chicago Bulls their sixth championship in 1998 by pulling off what became known as the greatest money shot in the history of the NBA, Michael believed he still had much of that Greatest-Player-Of-All-Time left in his game. But he felt that retirement was forced on him in 1999, and he left the game craving more doses of fifty-point binges, winner-take-all confrontations, and repeated nights of reminding fans they just saw the greatest player ever.

One Last Shot not only explains why Michael Jordan came back to the court but also looks at his transition from Wizards executive to player, his struggle to join a team that had grown up with his posters on their walls, and his glories and setbacks in a Wizards season chock full of both struggles and surprises. Krugel also details the star-laden workouts Michael designed in the summer of 2001 to get his game back into shape.

This look at Michael Jordan, circa 2001-2002, shows how much basketball had changed since his last coming and how much it hadn’t, and how his drive pushed him to the verge of a crippling knee injury all in the pursuit of winning. And for six weeks he did make it back. He made the shots. He made good on his mission to teach the Wizards how to be winners, to teach talented teammate Richard Hamilton to be a shooting star, and to whip Kwame Brown, the high school kid he made the first-ever first pick in the NBA draft, into a man. And he did the things that only a man of legend could do.

Krugel analyzes both the man and the legend to trace how the First Coming led to a Second and to a Third, and he chronicles the season that defines Michael Jordan as a man who will forever be playing for one last shot.

5-0 out of 5 stars In depth look of the greatest basketball player
Author chronicles Jordan's first season on a playoff mission with the Washington Wizards, something which happened when this franchise was still known as the Bullets.

The book opens with Jordan sinking that picture perfect shot against Utah then to his foray as a Wizard executive, practicing with the Wizards players then to his experiences in the court with teammates not named Scottie or Dennis but Kwame, Brendon. Krugel paints a Jordan looking for that one last shot, that one last roll of the dice no matter how many times over he has beaten the house.

I really loved this book for it gave us an in depth look of Jordan at his lowest point - from there you could begin to grasp how he won all those championships. The book also explains why there was a comeback attempt and why it ultimately failed. As proof, the author compares Jordan's best performance as a Bull compared to Jordan's best performance as a Wizard.

In the end, it was Jordan's body that let him down but not his indomitable will. Though there were times when he could hold his own against a new generation led by Kobe, Pierce and Iverson, he failed miserably when measured against the standard to which all other future basketball players will be measured - his former incarnation.

Bam jordan hits the game winning shot from the top of the key.If you haved watched jordan before this is regular event. This new book shows jordans new will to win and his fire inside that brought him back to the game he loved at 40.

All though this book was a bit repeating i thought it should what jordan thought. He was such an allstar and will always be.In this book you will see the personal battles (his wife wanting a divorce) to his physical battles(his knee injury). The book doesnt only explain his physical battles. It also shows his struggle switching from owner to player and playing with a team that had his posters on his wall.

I thought the author did a good job through out the book keeping the readers attetion and keeping him wanting more. This book shows a side of jordan you have never seen.Overall this was a very good book.I would recomend this to everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book, and I didn't even attend Notre Dame
This is an absolutely wonderful accounting of a man who had a vision of the proper place of athletics in American life. By the end, I had a tear in my eye, even though I have no direct connection to ND.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. While Moose Krause isn't the most recognizable figure in Notre Dame sports history, his story certainly makes him one of the most interesting. Congrats to Mr. Kelly for his enthusiastic, page-turning masterpiece!

5-0 out of 5 stars we can all learn from this book
as a teacher, i will encourage all my students to read this book. through this marvelous book, i began to appreciate the character of this man called "moose." aside from being a fine athlete and coach, kraus lived his life the way to which we should all aspire. whether or not you're a notre dame fan, this is a great read.

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing read!
I am not a Notre Dame fan, but my husband is and he strongly urged me to read this book. I couldn't be more thrilled that I did! It was enjoyable throughout and I was sad when it ended. Everyone should read this- sports fan or not, Notre Dame fan or not.

5-0 out of 5 stars The compelling story of a life well lived.
This is a story not of a great sportsman but of a great man who believed sports helps to build character in its participants. Moose proved this true in his own life and championed not just varsity athletics at the University of Notre Dame but intermural sports for all students. Through triumph and tragedy Moose embodied honesty, integrity and brought joy to all who knew him. His was a life we would all do well to emulate. This book is for all who enjoy reading stories of the greatest generation. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Unique account of a coach and his 2 sons
This book is a treasure for anyone who has a link to college basketball in new jersey. I personally know at least 5 people mentioned in the book. The day by day account of mr. hurley's life as a coach and father is great, but some of the 'harsher' realities of grooming inner city young men to be successful basketball players are missing.

5-0 out of 5 stars truly entertaining
Bob Hurley gives an amazing account of what it's like to be a basketball father. He follows the career of his two sons, Bobby, at Duke, and Danny, a guard for Seton Hall. While having two sons to follow in college basketball, Coach Hurley finds time to lead his St. Anthony's team to a state championship. This book speaks volumes about what type of man Bob Hurley Sr. is. ... Read more

Basketball is only the starting point for novelist John Edgar Wideman's meditations in this genre-defying book, which announces its difference in the opening paragraph. Some other author might have written the sentence, "Playing the game provided sanctuary, refuge from a hostile world." Only Wideman would follow it with, "Only trouble was, to reach the court we had left our women behind," and only Wideman would close a book about playground basketball with a letter to his grandmother. In between, he contrasts the sport with the craft of writing; mingles memories of learning to play with recollections of growing up in Pittsburgh; invokes the lover he found after his 30-year marriage broke up ("Turning this into a basketball game, aren't you, Mr. Hoopster?" she says at one point during their affair); talks about minstrel shows and African American music; and pits the purity and democracy of schoolyard ball against the professional sport, in which "a chosen few, players certified to be the very best, perform for pay as entertainers." You'll need to read it all to appreciate the way Wideman masterfully weaves together these diverse strands; suffice it to say that the importance of basketball to black men in a racist society, though a crucial subject here, is too straightforward to be the entire topic. "The deepest, simplest subject of this hoop book is pleasure," he writes, and he conveys that sensation to his readers on several different levels: the excitement of a superb description (men playing on a Greenwich Village court); the satisfaction of shrewd cultural analysis (why poor kids wear expensive clothes to play); the power of metaphor (the searing chapter titled "Who Invented the Jump Shot (A Fable)"); and most of all the thrill of watching an artist at the top of his game. --Wendy Smith ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Spare yourself from this one
I had to read this book for a college course. Too bad for me, since it's the worst book I've had to read from cover to cover. HoRrIbLy boring, mostly incoherent, the book takes very promising themes and turns them into very stylish [material]. Loaded with clichés and overused images. Blah, blah, blah, it goes on and on. If I wasn't being evaluated on it for class I would have stopped reading it after the first 15 pages. It's the only Wideman book I've read, and of course I don't plan to read any others, but if this is proof of his best work, I hope he is a better creative writing professor than his writing would suggest.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Disappointed Reader
If you think John Wideman's Hoop Roots is about playground basketball you may find yourself disappointed -- as I was.
Wideman is a wonderful writer. When he describes a player's drive to the basket, gliding into the air, checking out all around him, you can picture the action and feel the the excitement. When he describes the social protocols for the pick-up game he nails it When he describes the early days of the National Basketball Association, including the unique challenges for Black players, you can see it and feel it.
Unfortunately Hoop Roots contains far too few accounts like these. This book is about John Wideman growing up in a Black neighborhood in Pittsburgh, about his relationship to his family and in particular his grandmother, about Black athletes and Black men in America. Basketball, which has played such a key role in Wideman's life, is sprinkled throughout, often in bits and pieces that left me wanting much more.
Wideman was a star high school and college basketball player. He came the same neighborhood as NBA great Maurice Stokes and other noted stars. He played highly competitive playground basketball until he was 59, long after he had become an award-winning writer. I had so many questions for him. What was it like playing organized high school and college ball compared to the playgrounds? What were his own experiences as a playground player? What were some of his most memorable experiences in the playground game? How did he ever play until he was 59?!
Instead Wideman gives us long passages on the different routes he took to get to the playground as a youth, oversized shorts versus short shorts, and a fable about the Globe Trotters first road trip. It's all brilliantly written. It's just not about basketball.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spellbinding
OK, after reading the previously posted review, I admit that I am one of those readers who will read ANYTHING by John Wideman, regardless of subject- but I disagree that this book has too much roots and too little hoops. This book is fantastic. Wideman manages to discuss basketball- its history, its present, its future, and at the same time discuss race, love, music- all so eloquently that I often had to put the book down and absorb. The various stories of his family members make me wonder how John and his talented daughter Jamila managed to come out on top, when his brother and his son are so mired in tragedy. John Wideman is the best writer alive in America- I am convinced- and this book is an absolute masterpiece.

2-0 out of 5 stars Sadly, more Roots here than Hoops...
I've been a big fan of Wideman's work for years: his fiction, non-fiction, as well as his critical essays. I've especially enjoyed "Brothers & Keepers," "Fatheralong," etc. But I was, frankly, disappointed by this, his latest book. I would have much preferred more focus on Hoops--or at least on the Roots of Hoops--as the title seems to promise. Instead, we get more talk of (Wideman family) Roots than anything to do w/ the game of basketball (whether the street game, the pros, or Hoops in college). I suppose some (many?) might be pleased enough with Wideman to be satisfied with his writing about virtually any subject under the sun. But I was looking for a little bit more on basketball (e.g. his own H.S. and/or collegiate career, or his daughter Jamila's exploits on the Nat'l Championship Stanford team or in the WNBA). I understand that Jamila is currently at work on a folkloric study of pick-up b-ball on various courts thru'out the South (accompanied, I believe, by a photo-journalist friend of hers). I suppose I'll just have to wait for the publication of her book to get some of what I looked for in vain from her father this time. ... Read more

Book Description

The Anything You Can Do series is unprecedented in its concept of offering real stories of new heroes to young girls. The premise of the series is to profile a variety of young athletes, from a variety of ethnic, socioeconomic, geographical and family backgrounds who have grown up to achieve excellence in Olympic and professional sports.

This is Nancy Lieberman-Cline's story of passion for sport and an intense drive to be the best. Nancy grew up in Queens and learned to play basketball on the streets and playgrounds of New York. Overcoming a difficult childhood, she found confidence and acceptance on the basketball court. At a time when it was unusual for a woman to choose to become a competitive athlete, Nancy broke through the barriers to completely change the game of women's basketball. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Especially for girls with an interest in sports
A Drive To Win is the biography of Nancy Lieberman-Cline who, as a tomboy, was better at baseball and as fierce as any boy on the football field. Nancy had always been a sports enthusiast. But when she discovered basketball, she knew she had found her sport. Overcoming her mother's objections and the other kids' taunts. Nancy played every chance she got and when she heard the announcement that the U.S. Women's team was holding tryouts for the Olympic team, she snuck out to the tryouts -- but even if she made the team, would her mother let 15-year old Nancy play? Highly recommended reading, especially for girls with an interest in sports, A Drive To Win is the debut title for Wish Publishing's "Anything You Can Do...New Sports Heroes For Girls" series and focuses not only on one remarkable young woman's struggle to become a competitive athlete, but shows how participation in sports can help girls to grow up and become successful women.

4-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring reading for kids - librarian's 4 star award
If the first book is indicative of the series, then kids can look forward to an exciting time. It is a rare treat when an author can take the life of an athlete who has had a singular pursuit of their sport and make it an enriching, enjoyable story.

I recommend this book for schools.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Real Trail Blazer
What a wonderful, engaging, multifaceted book for adolescent girls.....and boys! Nancy Lieberman-Cline's biography is written in a way that captures your interest from the first page. Girls and women, especially, who have experienced any one of the many challenges or barriers in the pursuit of athleticism can relate to Nancy's life. Young girls who struggle with issues relating to body image, family support, competition, sociability, and acceptance will feel validated after reading this book.

A component of the book also worth its "weight in gold", is the section called "Sports Talk", which is meant to be an interactive platform for readers and their parents, teaches and coaches. It contains excellent research-based information and thought provoking questions for readers relating to issues of girls participating in sport, within the context of the book.

This would be a terrific book to use in a middle school program, where integration of English, Social Studies, Physical Education, and Technology are sought. ... Read more

Book Description

The Gallaudet women’s basketball team has just defeated the number one ranked team in the country, the College of New Jersey. A reporter, not wanting to be insensitive, delicately broaches the obvious question: “How can you play so well despite your hearing impairment?” Nanette Virnig, a forward for Gallaudet, puts him at ease. “We’re not hearing impaired,” she says. “We’re deaf.”

Winning Sounds Like This is the remarkable story of the nation’s most unique and inspiring women’s basketball team and its 1999–2000 season. It is the touching chronicle of players who don’t hear buzzers or cheers, a coach who has never used a whistle, and a university that is a mecca for deaf culture throughout the world.

Wayne Coffey offers an intimate and unsparing look at the players’ lives on and off the court, their struggles to overcome mistreatment and misconceptions of the hearing world, and their deeply rooted
connection to one another.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's about basketball!
Women's basketball books occupy a special niche in sportswriting.
Writing about a male players, an author might ask, "How did they make it into the big time?"
Writing about women, authors are forced to ask, "How did they get here at all?" This question adds a new dimension to the stories of women athletes. Players as young as today's collegians have had to overcome stereotypes. Many played on boys' teams -- or tried to.

Gallaudet women have to overcome a double stereotype -- being not only female, but also deaf. There was a time when opposing teams would openly ridicule deaf basketball players. One player was devastated as a high school student when a coach from a Christian academy openly laughed at her speech. She made the team but never forgot the experience.

However, the players want to be taken seriously as athletes. They do not want or need pity or condescension. To Coffey's credit, the book focuses on basketball, not deafness. We learn how players and teams compensate for a silent world. They can hear someone dribbling behind them. Referees are briefed: players can't hear the whistle so they may not stop playing immediately. And players on "hearing" teams need ASL translators who understand basketball terms.

Yet ultimately the story is about the game: coming together as a team and working to win. Like any sports book, there are stories of triumphs as well as tears. We come to care about the players as they, like all college athletes, balance basketball and books.

Perhaps the most difficult story takes place after the book was written. Ronda Jo Miller, an All-American center, cannot reach her goal of playing on a WNBA team. In stories posted on the internet, we can learn that she earned admiration of players and coaches during the tryout camp. She eventually played professionally in Denmark, with a "hearing" team, and has played in Kansas City with an expansion league, the WNBL.

What happens to the other athletes? Playing on a winning team can change lives and I found myself hoping they will continue to feel like winners, long after the season has ended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Page turning, inspirational read for all who love sports
Wayne Coffey not only knows sports but he knows how to write tight, action packed chapters. This story moves. Interpersed with backgrounds on the team members, the history of deaf culture, the story tracks the team through an incredible season. I am not an avid basketball fan nor did I have any particular interest in deaf culture, but this book captured my interest from the first page and held it throughout.

A rare find.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational and Compelling
This book is so good I couldnt stop reading it! It's an inspirational story about human nature, what it takes to be the best and something I knew nothing about previously...deaf culture. 4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good!!!
When i checked out this book i thought hey it's a movie i'll just watch the movie but for some odd reason i started to read the book and liked it! The book i read was THE BASKETBALL DIARIES by Jim Carroll. It was a good younge adult or maybe a mature teen book. The story is the diary of Jim Carroll about his struggle with addiction. His playing basketball and his desire to be pure. I have never really read a book like this before but compared to most books i've read it's a whole lot bolder. When i first started reading this book i thought hey he said the F word but then i found out theres so much more to it and the language doesnt make it the good piece of literature that it is. This book is a good book and it really made me think about my life and was i in control of it. Most people would say this book is mainly about a kid doing drugs but i believe the book is mostly about a kid and his struggles to be pure. On page 210 his quote "Then i stand up to puke, I just want to be pure....". Jim Carroll Has a great style of writting and i will be looking in to reading another one of his books. I liked this book but it is a very volgur book with alot of sex related situations alot of drug use and a whole lot of bad language. If this type of writting offends you i strongly suggest reading something different.

4-0 out of 5 stars Disturbingly honest
For a teenage diary, this is extremely well written. Jim Carroll was clearly a gifted writer, and his diary brings the New York City streets of the mid-60's to life. His vivid descriptions of growing up as a street wise kid on the mean streets of the city clearly paint a picture of the period.

That said, this is was NOT a fun book to read. There is much about Carroll's life in this period that is not pretty. His growing dependency on drugs is readily apparent as the book progresses, as is his willingness to do almost anything to pay for his next fix. There are graphic descriptions of both the drug use and his sexual encounters, but even so there is a sense of honesty in the account that somehow seems to be redeeming. In the end, this is a powerful glimpse into a life on the streets.

5-0 out of 5 stars the basketball diaries
The Basketball Diaries is an extraordinary book. It takes place in New York City during the mid 60's. The main character is Jim Carroll. He is a teenager who loves to play basketball and get wasted with his friends. As he grows older in the streets of New York, he becomes more and more of a junkie. I liked this book because it's so real. It made me laugh a lot, and at times I actually felt bad for Jim. His diaries were very well written and never left out any details. This book was definately one of the best books I've read so far, and I hope that after reading this review, many of you would pick up the book and see what all the fuss is about. I've read many books that just wasted my time and I just didn't enjoy, but The Basketball Diaries is one of the books that I absolutely DO NOT regret reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Compelling and Disturbing
This book was sooo super. It was very nutso to read and I'm a crazy guy. When he sodomized his teacher in that giant tub of potato salad I was like WHOA

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what i expected . . .
I could simply not be impressed with Jim Carroll's diaries. The events don't seem to invoke any sort of depth of character, rather the choice of entries seems to be based on pure shock value. I've read the other reviews and simply do not see the depth here that others claim to find. There is no search for purity, only a chance to find the next high, starting with his roof-top escapades and ending with his body riddled with drugs. What purity he had was lost before the book started (so we have no particular pity invoked) and each claim for the search of purity is negated within a few entries by yet another escapade into debauchery. Street-wise he may be, a decent writer at thirteen, yes, but nothing to engage the mind and make you think. Just looking to shock one more white-color suburbanite. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Change the Game book review
Overall I thought the book Change the Game was pretty good. One of the things I liked most about the book was that Grant never talked about all the money he made. I also liked how Grant expressed his feelings about problems kids face today. However, one thing I didn't like about the book was it was sort of short. Grant also moved from one topic to the next very quickly. Other than those things the book was good.

3-0 out of 5 stars Average book
This book is basically about Grant's ideals that he learned from his parents. It's a very quick read and if you like Grant Hill, then I would suggest you check this out. If you aren't much of a Grant Hill fan, then don't purchase this.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Basketball Biography I've Read
Grant Hill's book was very enjoyable, and it was very to-the-point. This was the best basketball biography I've read yet. The only problem was that it was over too soon. I finished this book way too quickly. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A keepsake for desert dwellers
David Kniss, the author and former Butler player, readily admits that this book was somewhat rushed - 16 months in the making - considering Coach Butler's 32 year career. And while this is true, Kniss still delivers a cohesive timeline of Butler's life.
To anyone associated with the High Desert, Butler is an icon - a man who won more than 600 games throughout his career. Having played for Butler in the late '80s, I can truly say that he is one of the few men I admired growing up and I admire even more in posterity. Not only for the example that he set as an individual, but for his tireless effort in building a program that the entire community could rally behind.
And while it's admittedly a "regional" book, I feel its appeal would have been far greater if Mr. Kniss had asked tougher questions - particularly about Butler's feud with former principal Julian Weaver. Another component this book lacks is an assessment of the impact Butler has had on his players lives. Many of his former players, myself included, still communicate with him.
Despite its shortcomings, however, Kniss delivers a solid book on a legendary man. Now, hopefully Kniss will try his hand at documentary filmmaking.

4-0 out of 5 stars From Ollie's Nephew
This book is a great read.

It reads like a research paper, but as family, I really enjoyed reading it.

The first couple of chapters really kept me interested, since it had family history. I'm not much of a sports fan, but I felt Kniss' passion for the game and his respect and admiration for my uncle. I can tell that it took a lot of research and hours of work to put it together. I especially enjoyed getting in-depth accounts of stories that I have only heard in passing over the years. I never fully realized how much my Uncle O.J. went through to get to where he is today. And I probably wouldn't if it weren't for Mr. Kniss. ... Read more

Any Portland, Oregon or Pacific Northwest sports fan will dig heavily into Schoneley's story. He's a great bridge between a time when major league sports was still a family operation and now. And it's more than just one man's story: It's a fascinating microcosm of the business in the second half of the century.

5-0 out of 5 stars huggins is God
I just have one question for everyone who has read this book? Is Bob Huggins disguised as God or is God disguised as Bob Huggins?

5-0 out of 5 stars it was the greates book of all time, just like the coach
This book excedes all expectations and tells what it is really like to run a winning program. He holds nothing back and tells it like it is. He is not afraid of the consquences of his actions because his players know that he will lay the smack down. Anyone who does not like this book must be a Xavier(Norwood University) fan or a fan of another confrence usa team.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for fans of the Bearcats
This book relives the great teams of the early Nineties. If you attended UC in the Eighties and Nineties then you'll love this book

3-0 out of 5 stars This book drags on and on.
It what could of been an interesting book about the sometime volatile coach, Huggins spends too much time discussing season after season, game after game. The early part of the book is better. This is where he discusses how he came to be a coach. I wanted more about the behind the scenes look at coaching rather than a game by game summary ... Read more
