5-0 out of 5 stars A juvenile biography of George Bush that should be updated
George Sullivan's juvenile biography of George Bush ends the morning after his inauguration as the nation's 41st President, so the focus is more on the man than on his presidency. Published in 1989 this book begins by outlining Bush's goals as President and a chapter on "Vital Statistics," which tells us "some things to know" about Bush. I actually liked this different approach, of establishing the character of the man before proceeding into the biographical details, which should help young readers make the connection between what happens in a person's life and the sort of person they become. Although this book does not cover the Bush presidency, it is an excellent biography for older students to use to find out about the path to the White House for the first member of the Bush family to hold that office. Too bad Sullivan never authored an updated version of this biography after Bush was defeated in 1992, because his writing style and attention to detail make this one of the better Bush biographies for young adults, even without covering the White House years. Final Note: The book is illustrated with black & white photographs as well as reproduction of yearbook entries on Bush.

4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
After reading the book, George Bush, it left me knowing things I never knew about George Bush. The book gave me a lot of facts I didn't know about him. Even though the book isn't up to date it still gave me a lot of background information about him. This book is a good background book for me. Now I know a lot of information about George Bush. So if I go and read another George Bush book I know a lot of things about him. George Bush still is an outstanding person. If anyone wanted to read a book on George Bush it should be this one by George Sullivan. Many people may not get the same reactions to this book as I did. But it is a really enjoyable book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An overview by hindsight
This book basically contends that although the leaders of the two countries acted like school yard bullies squaring off that it was George Bush who kept pushing towards war each time Saddam Hussein tried to slow down the current.

Among some of the interesting items presented against President Bush was the fact that he initially seemed to be pushed around by British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher who told him at a meeting that he couldn't stand for Hussein's invasion. In the beginning he wobbled and changed stances on the invasion frequently. His public and private statements through diplomatic channels were contradicting. At first he conveyed to Saddam Hussein (before the invasion of Kuwait) that the U.S. didn't care what Hussein did and would not take action if he invaded because it was an Arab problem. But when the invasion occurred he took action against it. Second, President Bush pushed Sadia Arabia to house U.S. troops on their soil even though the Saudi's were against it. Then he announced to the world that the Saudi's had requested the U.S. troops to help protect their land. Third, President Bush announced that the troops in Saudi Arabia would be there for defense of that country only and denied any intention of an invasion force to push back Iraqi troops. This too, turned out to be untrue.

On the opposite side of the spectrum it seems that, initially, Saddam Hussein's grievances were somewhat legitimate, although not for a full invasion of Kuwait. Saddam had come to the U.S. for help and was told to handle it any way he wanted, it was not our concern. You have to understand that in the years before the Gulf War the U.S. government was helping Saddam Hussein in his war with Iran. There was an issue of Kuwait stealing Iraqi oil by a "slant drill" in an oil field. The issue of Kuwait owning islands that blocked the ability of Iraq to transport their oil out of the Persian Gulf (these were given to Kuwait by the British). Atleast four times Hussein had offered a peace agreement and to remove his soldiers from Kuwait after the invasion through many nations, including Jordan and Russia, all to be turned down by the U.S.

Overall I feel this book was interesting and shed some light on some of the causes behind the war. While I believe that these are valid reasons that have been well researched I'm sure there are even more. The path towards war is usually complex. ... Read more

"The first book to explore the religious ideals that drive the policies and politics of Bush as president and that have privately shaped Bush as a man.More than any other president in recent years, George W. Bush's presidency is ""faith based."" His life demonstrates the power of faith to create change, to build a family and political career, and to shape the destiny of a nation with his leadership.Discover how the 43rd president of the United States interjects his faith and belief in God into every detail of his life. From his devotional time alone each morning to his frequent incorporation of Scripture into his speeches, you will learn how the president relies upon his faith to direct his actions and goals.Find out how a business failing, marriage difficulties, and a growing dependence on alcohol in the 1980s prompted Bush to become a man of faith. And look back at Bush's presidential campaign, when the then-Texas governor welcomed leading ministers to pray for his future, telling them that he had been ""called"" to seek higher office. From the tragedy of September 11th to the present-day conflict in Iraq, President Bush has learned to use his personal faith to help him live his life-both in office and in private. This book will inspire others to do the same." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading
This book is about a man who was born to privilege and extreme affluence. Who has been cushioned from the struggles of austerity and poverty. Yet he beleives himself a excellent candidate for not just the presidency but also denial of abortion rights to the raped and poverty stricken members of the female underclass. To which he has never belonged and would never want to meet.

What does George Bush junior care about ? Well not women's rights that's for sure.. Mr Bush is exposed here as being an incompetent business man. Not one of his worst failings as far as I am concerned by far his greatest error of judgement is to believe that every one who refuses to "accept Jesus as his(her)savior will go to hell"

Having George Bush Junior with his scant intellectual abilities and his reinforcment of the exploitation of natural resources for profit would be the real hell... This is a man without a shred of compassion who deserves to be exposed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Surprisingly Good Read
I really enjoyed this book. The research is thorough and the stories are well-documented. I will recommend this book to anyone looking for unbiased information about George W. Bush.

4-0 out of 5 stars The most evil President in History
Shocked to read the rambling Redneck ignorance expressed in these Amazon reviews by some commentators.
"The book is biased" ? Well of course it is, it is an expose of GWB ! Perhaps "Mein Kampf" should have included passages from the Tanakh too by this reckoning ?

Maybe, as some suggest the book is given to flights of fancy and perhaps is not so well sourced ? But well, judge a man by his actions as they say. And given GWB's recent actions one might be forgiven for thinking that he was capable of everything in this book and more.

An interesting perspective on a man known for his destructive environmental policies, his contempt for civil rights, and one of the biggest warmongers in the History of warmongers as he leads the World on the path to Armageddon. A man whom it is argued, is not the legitmate President of the United States.
Read all about "Dubya" before the Nukes he will bring down upon our nation burn the retina's from your eyeballs.

Get "The Father's Son", before the Father's Son gets you.

(Not recommended for those of a close minded, ignorant disposition who believe in the sanctity of the Oval Office)

1-0 out of 5 stars more trash
While this book may have many facts, it also has loads of spin. Everything is clearly slanted in an anti-Bush family manner. Generally all actions are looked down upon in some fashion by the author. To suggest that this book is unbiased would be a massive joke to say the least. For those who are still crying over the lost election, this book may do its job as a bandage for the wounded Liberals. For others, it will give insight into the life of George W. Bush, and his policies. In time, everyone will come to realize that affluent or not, George W. Bush is a good, honest man with honor and integrity. He'll be elected to a second term, and if you think you've seen Conservatism now, just wait. GOP2004!

1-0 out of 5 stars George W. Bush Jr. !
The author can't even get the president's name right, (George Walker Bush = George Herbert Walker Bush). Not quite. This is just one simple example of the authors incompetent research and bias. Anyone who has read other George W. Bush biographys knows that he didn't like being referred to as Jr. However, the author takes a swipe at W. in the title showing the bias he has against him, which is evident in the rest of the book. Which leads me to the footnotes. Let's call them extremely questionable footnotes. The author is sure to back up simple facts that other authors have verified. But, when it comes to trashing the president he offers no footnotes what-so-ever. What a peice of trash this is. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to US Presidents for Children
This is exactly the kind of book that can introduce history and government to young readers.

Ann Bausum, for the National Geographic Society, has put together a first-rate book on our country's presidents through George W. Bush.

Each president has at least a page dedicated to their life and presidency as well as a portrait and illustrations of events current to their times. Presidents such as Lincoln and FDR and those who have served in the modern era have four to six page spreads describing their elections, the issues, their lives and the challenges they faced as president.

The write-ups are excellent summaries aimed at explaining the highlights to youth. The photos, paintings and other illustrations make this a very inviting book that some children will browse while others delve into the writing. Either way, older elementary school children have a very inviting and informative introduction into our presidents and history that should capture young imaginations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly enjoyable book, by George!
From the first George to the latest (wouldn't it just be easier if we voted for the one called George..?) each president is given a few pages of analysis and historical outline - just enough to set each apart for his own achievements, failures, characteristics and ultimate fate (and other, trivial stuff too..just as interesting - read about Gerald Ford. No, really...) in a fascinating setting. And our ultmate fate? To read more about our chosen subject, put the book down having found sufficient information or, as in my case, to keep reading the well structured and accessible text. In short, if you thought presidents, especially dead ones (not the greenback kind) were boring, oh you were wrong! A book every home should have! I love it! ... Read more

Book Description

Throughout time, major wars have defined historical epochs and charted the rise and decline of great powers. The U.S. global "war on terror," with Iraq as the Bush administration’s chosen centerpiece, is almost certainly destined to do the same. Indeed, the Bush doctrine for conducting the war on terror and the Iraqi Freedom campaign are likely to prove benchmarks in U.S. history precisely because of the many orthodoxies and traditions the administration has purposely challenged. At the same time, fundamental flaws have already appeared in many tenets underlying the Bush transformation of foreign and military affairs. ... Read more
