2-0 out of 5 stars If you are a golf fan, then a decent read
Decent read although it became boring at times and the author tends to jump around alot.If you are a golf fan or an avid golfer you will find the book interesting.Poorly edited with some blatant errors such as describing a typical par 72 course as consisting of "four par threes, four par fives, and twelve par fours".With that the author seemed to lose some credibility and made me wonder how he gathered the tidbits of information and dialogue supplied throughout the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Better title:Learning to Choke by the Biggest Choker Ever!
Ever wonder who is the biggest choker in the history of sport? Then you have found your answer with Greg Norman. Years of rumors about Norman's off the course problems are not even touched in this book.Instead it is PR.Don't bother with this book.Buy something about Tiger Woods, Arnold Palmer or other great golfers who did not throw their talent away by indulging off the course activity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic !Insightful and very readable
Carl Vigeland has done a great job showing the reader what makes the Shark so dangerous on the course and so interesting off the course.Well written and very enjoyable reading

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible!
Terrible!Time would have been much better spent re-reading "A Good Walk Spoiled".

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book
This look at Greg Norman tells those who think he chokes in the big ones something they have not perhaps thought of. The reason Greg Norman has lost so many tournaments in the final round or final hole is because he is in contention on more of them than anyone else. A good look at the fiercest competitor in golf since Arnold Palmer. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Account of the Senior Tour
This is a great read from one of the players themselves at the time. So, he's no Trevino or Palmer.Frank was a solid player (11 regular Tour wins, I think) during his regular Tour years and has proven himself admirably behind the mike for years with ESPN.He's a stand-up guy who tells it like it is.

If you want to know what it's like inside the ropes with the over 50 Tour set, read this book. But start first with Pro, the first book Frank wrote in 1970 with Dick Schaap. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fun book that is worth a read
This fictitious "tongue-in-cheek" tale on the management of golf courses should appeal to non-golfers equally as much as it should to amateur and professional golfers alike.

The book is very well written and, even though it is fictitious, seems to give a very good insight into the highs and lows of golf course management (both on and off the course). The story appears to be written with a mixture of sincerity, joviality, friendly irreverence and with a light hearted touch of arrogance.

All in all, the book amused me to the point I couldn't put it down and, to me, that is the mark of a good book, isn't it?.

Authorized, intimate, and definitive, Ben Hogan: A Life is the long-awaited biography of one of golf's greatest, most enigmatic legends, narrated with the unique eloquence that has made author James Dodson a critically acclaimed national bestseller.

One man is often credited with shaping the landscape of modern golf. Ben Hogan was a short, trim, impeccably dressed Texan whose fierce work ethic, legendary steel nerves, and astonishing triumph over personal disaster earned him not only an army of adoring fans, but one of the finest careers in the history of the sport. Hogan captured a record-tying four U.S. Opens, won five of six major tournaments in a single season, and inspired future generations of professional golfers from Palmer to Norman to Woods.

Yet for all his brilliance, Ben Hogan was an enigma. He was an American hero whose personal life, inner motivation, and famed "secret" were the source of great public mystery. As Hogan grew into a giant on the pro tour, the combination of his cool outward demeanor and invincible, laser-guided accuracy on the golf course froze formidable opponents in their tracks. In 1949, at the peak of his career, Hogan's mystique was reinforced by a catastrophic automobile accident in which he and his wife, Valerie, were nearly killed after being hit head-on by a Greyhound bus. Doctors predicted Hogan might never walk again—let alone set foot on another golf course. But his miraculous three-year recovery and comeback led to one of the greatest performances in golf history when in 1953 he won the Masters, the U.S. Open, and the British Open (something that's never been repeated).

In this first-ever family-authorized biography, renowned author James Dodson expertly and emotionally reconstructs Hogan's complicated life. He discovers an intensely honest man handicapped by self-doubt, buoyed by the determination to prove his own abilities, and unable to escape a long-buried childhood tragedy—the core of the Hogan "secret." Dodson also reveals both the legendary devotion and eventual strain in Hogan's sixty-two-year marriage, and a Hogan rarely seen by the public: a warm, jovial man whose charitable spirit and sharp business sense enabled him to build the powerful golf equipment company bearing his name to this day. Ben Hogan: A Life is the authoritative inside portrait golf fans have long awaited.

3-0 out of 5 stars HIS BEGINNING
Sports Illustrated put together a collection of some of its articles chronicling the rise of Tiger Woods from the years 1992 through 1996. Writers such as James Garrity, Jaime Diaz, Tim Rosafore, Rick Reilly, William Reed, and Gary Sickle share their special insight on this young golf phenomena. Everyone has their say in this three act drama.

Act I is aptly titled The Kid. Here we are given a snapshot of the young Tiger learning his trade while moving up in the ranks of golf history. Act II concerns itself with the young man on the rise as an Amateur. The reporting tracks his comebacks, successes and the never ending question of when he will turn pro. Act III, The Pro, introduces us to a new Tiger. Tiger has moved beyond his peers on the amateur circuit and now has debuted as a professional. How he does and what he will do in the future is yet to come as we read the articles concerning his progress.

This is a good picture book. If you want to start a conversation about Tiger Woods and his rise to golf fame, this is a fair start. The articles aren't all that exciting unless you love to hear the same old jargon and statistics about Tiger, time and time again. The book's photography is good and enjoyable. Sports Illustrated threw together a picture book of a rising star. The magazine could have done better but what you have is decent coffee table reading. ... Read more

Most of life's searches tend to be more fascinating than their destinations; the quest for entry into the exclusive club made up of the best competitive golfers in the world is no exception. Every golfer faces doubt and despair--they are as much a part of the game as woods and irons. But there is something just that much more doubtful and despairing about the game for those for whom the flag is just a tantalizing, agonizing, wedge away. Paulson, a former All-American at South Carolina, has shuttled between the rarefied air of the PGA Tour and the terrifying trenches of Q-School, and he recounts his journey--the small triumphs like shooting a 62 at the 1995 Disney Golf Classic, the frustrating heartbreaks, and all those nights along the way in cheap motels wondering if it's actually worth it--with candor and equanimity. Time, he knows, is running out on him. "I have always been fortunate," he admits, "that I have never been obsessed with making it to the very top. I have always focused on making the transition to the next level." Interestingly, it's his very level-headedness that may, in the end, keep him a few club-lengths from hitting his dream in regulation. --Jeff Silverman ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Some great insights, but monotonous at times
Paulson's book is a wonderful example of life on tour; however, there are too many shot-by-shot (blow-by-blow?) descriptions of individual tournaments. I found interesting Paulson's description of the differences between the mini tours and the big time (notably pressure, casualness of players, social interaction) and I enjoyed his descriptions of his first year on the tour. Unfortunately, after he failed to keep his card after his first year, the story becomes the same, albeit much more knowledge gained for our hero. I guess I was expecting more description about what life held for him out there that first year, not play-by-play. Overall, I enjoyed the book because it is easy reading and thoroughly enjoyable, but (much like Tracy Stewart's book about her late, great husband), simply written. For a much better read on getting on the tour and keeping your card, I recommend Q School Confidential, by David Gould.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic insight into, well, a rookie on tour!
This book was such a pleasure to read! It really does take you through all the ups and downs of life on the tour. These guys have to be really, really good, and you learn all about it in this book. Read it and you'll find yourself checking on how Carl is doing in each event he plays in!

4-0 out of 5 stars Living a Virtual Rookie PGA Tour Year
This is a good golf book. Unassuming, hardworking golfer who until I read this book, I hadn't heard of. Selected this book on a whim, but really enjoyed it. Believe all golfers would, as it shows what it's like to be a golfer of Carl's caliber and how competitive it really is out there. The narrowness at the top, and how illusive it is to stay there.

4-0 out of 5 stars Do you Really Wish you could Join the PGA Tour?
I thought it was a great book. It answered so many questions I have always wondered about. How do you really get on the Tour? How do you stay there? What kind of perks are offered to pro golfers? What is the inside life really like? If you play good golf and have always toyed with thoughts of trying to play professionally, this book is for you. Paulson provides those answers plus his own personal experiences in actually doing it all. Great reading. I wish he would write a sequel.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ever wonder what life is like on the PGA Tour?
I do. This book helps me answer that questions. I learned about some of the inner workings of the tour and how difficult life really is for these players. The other books I have read that say they are an inside view of the tour are written by outsiders and are mainly summaries of the year with a few extra quotes thrown in. Paulson leads us through his mood swings and difficulties as he tries to make it on tour. Worth the read. ... Read more
