5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for Flyers fans!
Having grown up a Flyers fan and hearing Gene Hart for many years, I loved this book. It's a great combination of how Gene became associated with the Flyers, as well as a timeline of the Flyers' history from the beginning up to the early 90's.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book by the Greatest Announcer
I first started listening to Gene Hart calling Flyers games in 1968. He was a wonderful announcer when the Flyers were mediocre and was absolutely superb when they were on top. I've heard a lot of sports broadcasting in a lot of cities around the country in the last 35 years and no one else in any sport approaches Gene's work. I was disappointed when he stopped announcing and deeply saddened with his passing last year. His book is every bit as fine as his radio and television work. Of the several Flyers books in print, his supasses the others in intimacy, first hand recollections and general nostalgic value. I sure miss Gene Hart, but this book and some tapes of television broadcasts he did are my most treasured sports memorabilia. He is a Hall of Famer and his writing belongs there too.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Flyers book, by the best ever play-by-play legend!
This book is probably the best history of the Flyers that you could find out there. Full Spectrum ranks right up there, but it doesn't have Mr. Heart's personality like SCORE! does. I'm gonna miss Gene.......

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST for Flyers Hockey Fans ! Long Live GENE HART !!
No one can tell a story the way Gene Hart did. He made you feel as though you were a part of every experience he retells in this book. Gene's love & passion for the game of hockey and the Philadelphia Flyers is clearly evident in this book. Gene not only chronicles the Flyers history from their entrance into the NHL, he also gives you a deep insight into the pride and character of a close knit group of players. We are all truly enriched by Gene's efforts. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "Must" reading for all golf fans and players.
Masters Of The Millennium tells the story of how "twenty-something" players Justin Leonard, David Duval, Tiger Woods, and Phil Mickelson are changing the way the game of golf is played as they etch their names onto the leaderboards week after week. These superstar golfers are electrifying galleries on stops all over the tour, and taking the tradition-filled game of golf to an entirely new audience that had not previously followed golf as passionately as they do now. Masters Of The Millennium provides insights from these young players and enables the reader to learn how they respect the players that walked the fairways before them, and why they hold the future of the game into the new millennium. Masters Of The Millennium is "must" reading for all fans and players of the game of golf.

5-0 out of 5 stars The young guns - a great read!
I tremendously enjoyed reading about the young players that are ready to challenge just about everyone on the PGA tour! I read the book yesterday , just before watching Duval battle it out w/ Tom Lehman- with the other guys just behind him- TIGER, and Leonard! This is a great , fun book to check out! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fine Autobiography of an Original 6 Superstar
Mr. Beliveau provides a strong insight into a game that has ceased to exist anymore. Todays NHL (27 teams and more on the way) bears no resemblance to Mr. Beliveau's era when there were six teams and approximately 150 players, travel was by train and a 'players union' was the owners idea of having all team members in one place at the same time. The book is divided, roughly, into three equal parts; Mr. Beliveau's junior years in Quebec with the Citadels and Aces; his years with the Canadiens organisation, and; his insights into how the game has changed to its present form. As a participant, Mr. Beliveau reminisces fondly over his career and the many individuals (on both sides of centre ice) with whom he has played, including an excellent analysis on Bobby Orr's impact on the game. As an observer, Mr. Beliveau presents spirited and informed opinions on the many changes the game has endured since expansion 30 years ago, including thoughts on the WHA influence on the NHL.

Hockey books are a dime a dozen, and I've read my share, but few I've read in recent memory contain an insight to the game, both past and future, that this one does. ... Read more

Book Description

A professional hockey player plays in hundreds of games during his career but there is always one game that stands out from the rest -- the game he'll never forget. For Dave Schultz it was beating the Soviet Union after the Central Red Army had embarrassed the NHL's best teams in 1976. Maurice "Rocket" Richard recalls the Leafs-Canadiens game where he scored five goals in a playoff game, single-handedly winning the game. Frank Mahovlich remembers scoring his 500th goal after falling -- not the most beautiful way to reach this career milestone.

But it's not just the incredible victories, career milestones or amazing goals that stand out. Ted Lindsay recalls playing for the Detroit Red Wings while under a death threat. And for Denis Potvin, it was sleeping in and missing a game during his rookie year, a mistake that could have torpedoed his career before it started. Gordie Howe's most memorable game was the first game he played with his sons. Spanning 70 years of hockey, The Game I'll Never Forget is an unique account of some incredible games and the players who played them. ... Read more

Book Description

Family ties have been an enduring part of hockey history since the beginning of the NHL. Ken Dryden was asked why it is that hockey ties are so prevalent in hockey compared to other professional sports leagues. Part of it, he theorized, was the nature of the long Canadian winter that leaves kids without much else to do. Dryden also thought that hockey's rural roots may have something to do with it, "Hockey players have historically come from smaller places rather than bigger places. In a smaller place you have fewer options and it is more likely in a smaller place that if one kid from a family gets involved in hockey, other kids are going to get involved too."

Hockey Dynasties is an era by era look at the proliferation of family ties in professional hockey. The book will examine why there are so many families in professional hockey, and will include tales by the players about their time at center ice playing with and against their siblings/ fathers/cousins/uncles.

Hockey families included are: Ken and Dave Dryden, Wayne and Brent Gretzky, Eric and Brett Lindros, Charlie, Roy and Lionel Conacher, Bobby and Brett Hull, Maurice and Henri Richard, Pete and Frank Mahovlich, Gordie, Mark and Vic Howe, Marcel and Gilbert Dionne, Brian and Joe Mullen, Sylvain and Pierre Turgeon, Russ and Geoff Courtnall, The Sutter Brothers (Ron, Brent, Brian, Darryl, Duane, Rich), Phil and Tony Esposito, The Stastny Brothers (Peter, Anton, and Marian), Pavel and Valeri Bure, The Hunter Brothers (Dale, Mark, Dave), Lynn, Lester and Craig Patrick, Neil, Aaron and Paul Broten, Max, Doug and Reg Bentley, Bun and Bill Cook, George and Frank Boucher, Neil and Max Colville, Dennis, Bryan, Sr. and Bryan, Jr. Hextall. ... The man with the blistering slapshot was the ultimate combination of power, speed, and intimidation. 5-0 out of 5 stars MacInnis Does it Again
The "Remembering..." series transcends normal biography by showcasing top quality journalist's recollections with statistics and insights into the player and their game.

Remembering the Golden Jet is no different. From Bobby Hull's early days playing minor hockey, to his watershed defection from the NHL to play for Winnipeg, a move that would rock the hockey world and force the league to re-evaluate it's salary policy forever.

For Blackhawks fans this book charts the progress of a player who was feared by goalies everywhere for his blistering slapshot.

I have read every Bobby Hull book out there, and nothing comes close in it's insights, in it's recognition of Hull as a true Legend of the game, as this beautifully designed book.

I can't recommend it highly enough. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Generic Fluff
Mark Messier is and always will be my favorite hockey player but this book provides no original insight into his character whatsoever. The book offers the same repetitve praise over and over about what great leader he is without ever touching upon the other sides of his personality, particularly the darker and more personal aspects that we don't get to read about in the paper. This book could have been written in a week.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Mess is all cleaned up
A great read....filled with insights and facts on how messier became the great player he is today. Great perspectives on mess from players to coaches to writers. A must read for hockey fans of all ages.

4-0 out of 5 stars Refreshing!
Well written! Keeps you interested and waiting to find out what happens next. Mr. Carpiniello has given the reader a lovely glimpse into the career of a wonderful athlete. As a hockey mom whose son greatly admires this superstar, I am grateful for a biography that celebrates the leader, the nice guy. In answer to "Horrible", who cares whom the athletes go out with and who doesn't assume that they do? Fill in the blanks or read Jackie Collins. On target to what the sport is about. The hard work, the dedication and the will to win! Well done!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not any new info here
If you have ever watched any of the NHL videos with Messier clips, a lot of this information will look or sound familiar because it relies heavily on well-publicized newspaper stories. Some stuff was new to me regarding the Messier/Neilsen incident, but don't buy it based on that, not enough to justify it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
This is a must read for Messier fans and Ranger fans alike. It follows Messier's career and provides some insight on the trade that sent Mess to Vancouver. The foreward by Brian Leetch was very interesting. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent biography of one of hockey's all-star characters.
A truly wonderful book for any fan of the great Canadian game. It tells the life story of Howie Meeker, one time war veteran, politician, winger, coach and very briefly manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, not to mention broadcaster and seminal teacher of the game.

His remarkable career with all its ups and downs is related in an honest and humble manner, giving much insight into how the game developed during the 1940/50s. Included are a host of anecdotes about the great hockey figures of the day, not least of which are some very enlightening accounts of the "character" that was Conn Smythe and his treatment of successive Leafs coaches.

This biography is very well written with an entertaining, informative and intelligent style that makes it a superb read for those new and old to hockey. ... Read more
