Book Description

Tim Horton was the rock-steady rear guard who captained the Toronto Maple Leafs for 18 years and led them to four Stanley Cups in the 1960s, including the franchise's last Cup win in 1967. Horton's premature death deprived the hockey world of a legend, but this book rightfully returns him to the spotlight. Dozens of vintage photographs and complete stats complete this tribute to an amazing athlete from hockey's golden era. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice collection that gives one a feel for a hockey great.
This book is a collection of articles concerning Tim Horton. Very complimentary of the man and player, the articles definitely give you a feel for the time and play of Tim Horton.

Known to most of us because of the donuts (and they are really good!), this collection allows a glimpse of the man as well. I would recommend this book for those who want a feel for 50 and 60s hockey, as well as those who want the feel of the times.

5-0 out of 5 stars An all-star book about an all-time defenseman
To today's young hockey players and fans, the name Tim Horton elicits thoughts of coffee and donuts; to an older generation of fans, the name Tim Horton brings memories of one of the greatest defenseman ever to play the sport.

Tim Horton was the strongest hockey player of his generation, perhaps of all-time. He was not a goon, however -- he would end fights simply by wrapping his muscular arms around much-bigger players and pulling them apart. He was known for his generosity and gratitude. His teammates made gentle fun of his poor eyesight, calling him "Cousin Weak-Eyes." Horton and Bobby Baun anchored a Leaf defense unmatched in team history.

Tragically, Tim Horton was killed in a car accident in February 1974. Hockey lost one of its heroes.

Craig MacInnis's REMEMBERING TIM HORTON is a terrific look back at the man and the legend. MacInnis and his roster of veteran journalists and writers bring us back to the days when honor meant more than stardom, when pride and winning meant more than a contract hold-out and who's picked higher in the NHL draft, when the Leafs were fighting to winning the Stanley Cup instead of hurrying to pack up their golf bags a few weeks earlier than the Cup champions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gives insight of a great player through unique perspective.
This is a great book for those interested in hockey behind the scenes. It is very interesting to read stories told by people such as Punch Imlach etc. about Tim Horton off the ice, in the dressing room and family man. This book is not only for those hockey fans of the 6 team days, but modern day hockey fanatics as well. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Real facts and inspiration
my son loves this series because the author writes in real sports terms.Even though it is easy enough for a 1st or 2nd grader to read alone, it isn't baby-ish.We especially like the stories of players who beat the odds.A great series for your little hockey fan. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have book for all school libraries.
I'm writing this on behalf of my 6 year old son who is a New Jersey Devils fan and admirer of Scott Gomez. The book is informative and well written. We find out how old Scott was when he took up hockey(age 5)and how Scott worked his way up the league and eventually into the NHL.Scott Gomez is a genuine roll model for young people and especially young Hispanics who don't think other Hispanics played hockey(we are stereotypicaly boxers who don't know how to do anything else).I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the sport or is a new fan of hockey. What is really warm about this is how close Scott is to his dad, Carlos, and what a tight knit family they are. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Oldtimers score big
Although there is a tad too much about Brewitt's realtionship to some of these NHL oldtimers, I just loved the tales told. Rene Robert calling Scotty Bowman a "platehead" and Robert tossing a hat-trick puck at the Mtl bench was a classic howler. As was Butch Goring and the hot dog incident which is as funny as that wreck of a helmet he used to wear. There are so many but it was nice to see stories on Bill White and Fats Delvecchio--two of the more underrated stars of the past. ... Read more

Book Description

After the New York Rangers missed the NHL playoffs for the third consecutive season in `99-2000, big changes were in the air at Madison Square Garden. Glen Sather was hired as team president/general manager, and he named Ron Low coach and brought back Mark Messier, the captain of the Rangers` 1995 Stanley Cup championship team. In Nightmare on 33rd Street: A Long Season With The New York Rangers, veteran hockey beat writer Rick Carpiniello takes a day-by-day, game-by-game journey with a team in transition.

From the preseason to the season`s bitter end and the important off-season dealings, Carpiniello brings hockey fans inside the locker rooms and boardrooms and onto the ice with a team struggling to regain its winning form. Sather, the architect of championship clubs in Edmonton, discovers that running a team in the big city is a different story. In trying to find the right mix of talent, players are traded or sent to the minors while others are brought to the big club in their places. Constant trade rumors and turmoil sweep through the locker room. Key Ranger players, including goalie Mike Richter, fall victim to injury. Coach Low juggles the ever-changing roster, while captain Messier, now 40 years old, attempts to rally the troops.

Nightmare on 33rd street is an inside look at the tumultuous New York Rangers` 2000-01 season by a seasoned observer of the hockey scene. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Where did I hear that before?
As with the 2 previous reviews, I agree that alot of the book was repetitive. The book also lacked flow. There were spots that he should have given more details but didn't.There were some interesting notes as to why players were not taken to task. However, I found myself looking for more....but it just wasn't there.

2-0 out of 5 stars Over and Over and Over
As a Rangers fan, I expected at minimum an interesting read. But what I got is a poorly written piece of tripe. Talk about repetitive: In one instance the writer, Rick Carpiniello, quotes three players--back-to-back-to-back--who essentially say the same thing.
This book sorely needs an editor. Long rambling quotes permeate, while there isn't nearly enough analysis. The writer also has a penchant for doing things like saying the Rangers poor play is not acceptable. He follows by quoting Theo Fluery who says "No, it's not acceptable," and Mark Messier, who says "Losing isn't something we can easily accept." NO KIDDING.
It's a difficult read and way too repetitive. Did I mention it repeats itself--over and over? I ended up skipping paragraphs at a time. I don't know how this guy made it out of J-School.

3-0 out of 5 stars Get in the corners, Carp!
While this book did confirm some of my worst suspicions (GM Mark Messier and Muckler's uh, style), I found that after awhile, it read like a gigantic newspaper article, with re-hashing of stats and scores (They were 1-8-1, with 30 shots...yadayadayada). I even recognized some of the quotes from the papers. It seemed that Carpiniello wanted and tried to be honest, but since I suppose he's still working around these guys, he can't get too opinionated. For instance, he would recall an intriguing incident or remark, then leave it alone. I would have preferred to hear his personal opinions of why Muckler did or said 'such and such.' Here and there, he might insert a little bit of what he thinks, he does get on Sather a little bit, but I'd prefer if he had just let it fly. ... Read more

This is one of Dick Irvin's first outings as an author. The book details his rise as an broadcaster and his life in hockey from childhood to the present. While this is not quite as entertaining as some of Irvin's later books, it is a good compilation of stories which will hold the interest of Irvin and Hockey Night in Canada fans everywhere ...
