Book Description

Inside the NHL Dream touches on the human side of the players and people who work inside the National Hockey League. It's a part of the game most people never get to see unless they work on the inside. While it talks about issues behind the scenes, it's also a motivational book. The common theme in all the interviews, whether it was a player, management, agent or media, is that everyone had the dream of working in the NHL, which lends to the theme of encouraging readers to follow their own dreams.

Learn about the true professional lives of the people and players who work Inside the NHL Dream. People like Jarome Iginla, James Patrick, Anson Carter, Michael Peca, Paul Kariya, Eric Duhatschek, Kelly Hrudey, Perry Berezan and many more.

What really happens behind the scenes? Learn about trades, travel, time commitments, sacrifices, the physical toll and what it’s like to live on the bubble. What kind of commitment do players actually give? What role does management play in the overall state of the league? Who are the media and what is their role? ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars EUROPEAN FAN LIKES IT
You know i really liked this book just because of that its nice to see great european players past and present in this book. unlike other books where it's just nhl players, this book has both nhl players and european players included. As a international hockey historian i really enjoyed it. gretzky-kharlamov-nedomansky-salming and many other great players are in this book. the price is my only problem with the book, it cost some bucks.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not waste your money
I read this book because I had to: I was reviewing it for The Edmonton Journal. My conclusion is simple and straightforward: while beautiful, this book is so filled with glaring mistakes, howlers and omissions, its authors and editors should be ashamed of themselves. In fact, if it were possible, I would give this volume no stars at all: the first thing a book on history must have is its facts right. ... Read more

Book Description

A perennial all-star and seven-time winner of the Norris Trophy for best defenseman, Doug Harvey was a cornerstone of the legendary Montreal Canadiens, winners of five consecutive Stanley Cup trophies. This is a rare biography of an extraordinary athlete who turned down careers in football and baseball to become one of the world's greatest hockey players. It tells the story of a remarkable individual—a man who was as irreverently funny, generous, and kind as he was obstinate, hard-drinking, and explosive. He was a leader and friend to his teammates, a troublemaker and rabble-rouser to hockey management. Well-written and painstakingly researched, this biography offers a full view of the player, coach, and man.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thumbs Up
A fine biography of one of the greatest defensemen the game has ever seen.Harvey was not only a fabulous hockey player; he also excelled at baseball and football. This book chronicles his achievments in all three sports, plus his time in the Navy. It's an excellent historical reference, with lots of space devoted to the Richard Riot in 1955 and the ill-fated attempt at forming a Player's Association in 1957, and Harvey's involvement in both.Harvey was also known for his actions off the ice; this book has dozens of anecdotes regarding his antics, both funny and sad.

My only complaint is that not enough space was devoted to Harvey's time as a perennial Norris Trophy winner. The author seemed content to focus more on Harvey's run ins with management than the ins and outs of what made him so great as a defenseman.I would have liked some more focus on the ice, although that kind of analysis may not be suited for more casual readers. My other complaint is that the author went a bit easy on Harvey's notorious drinking and partying. He didn't make excuses per se, but at times appeared to be rationalizing Harvey's often deliquent behavior and writing it off as the result of his biploar disorder.

Those minor complaints aside, this is a good, easy read, and definitely worth picking up if you're a fan of Harvey and the Habs, or the history of hockey in general.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Habs Fans and All Hockey Lovers
This is an excellent account of one of hockey's most enigmatic figures, and as an added bonus, a rare look behind the scenes of the great power teams and personalities of the Montreal Canadiens from the '50's and '60's.If that isn't enough, the great careers of the likes of Howe, Lindsay, Glen Hall, Sawchuk, Hull, Storey, Campbell, Blake, Irvin, Selke are discussed. If you love old-time hockey, you will love this book. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars too many errors
The other reader only pointed out one major error in this book. I have only read ten pages in the Yzerman section and have identified four errors. Detroit is not located on the St.Clair River, New Jersey swept the Wings in the finals the lockout season, obviously not the year they won 62 games, Yzerman did not lose the Calder Trophy to Steve Larmer, and Yzerman's oldest daughter is named Isabella. Perhaps the author should stick to broadcasting and let people who know how to research or, at least find people who can research, do the writing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Flawed but interesting
A flawed but interesting book. It attempts to be a hockey version of Peter King's "Inside the Helmet," but without King's insight. What will truly annoy fans of the game are the factual errors that any competent editor would have caught. For example, Dowbiggin writes of Clint Malarchuk's life threatening injury, but has him playing for the Washington Capitals. I am being picky sure, but how do you write about a scene no one "will ever forget" and then get the team wrong?! Overall though, the book is a welcome change from the suck up bios and transcribed interviews passed off as books about hockey. ... Read more
