Book Description

The gunmen rose from the crowd and set their sights on Malcolm X. The thunder of shotgun blasts ripped through the ballroom, and Betty Shabazz turned to see her husband float backward, keel over and crash to the ballroom stage. She grabbed her children, hurling them beneath a booth and shielding them with her body while the room erupted into screams and chaos. As she lay there squeezing her family, the Betty Shabazz who was the dutiful and obedient wife of the Civil Rights Movement's most feared leader ceased to be, and the woman who emerged would become one of the greatest heroines of our day.

Betty Shabazz, Surviving Malcolm X is the first major biography of Dr. Betty Shabazz, the unsung and controversial champion of the Civil Rights era. From her early marriage to black liberation's raging voice through her evolution into a powerful and outspoken African-American leader, Betty Shabazz was in constant struggle to bring freedom and justice to her people. Yet, at times her greatest fight was to struggle through tragedy and hold on to her faith amidst the stereotypes forced on her by a culture of racism and the very people she was trying to liberate.

To read Betty Shabazz, Surviving Malcolm X is to experience this remarkable life. With eloquent and intimate prose, Russell J. Rickford puts you on the scene as a young Betty Sanders is taken in by foster parents after a troubled childhood. You are there as Malcolm X comes home from a hard day of railing against oppression to hug his children, dote on his wife and laugh. You dive under the table at the Audubon Ballroom as bullets strike Malcolm down. You struggle with Betty Shabazz as she fights to raise six girls alone while earning a doctorate. You stand triumphant with her as she claims her own individuality and fights to build respect for Malcolm. And you stand watch with her daughters as Betty passes away, a victim of yet another tragedy, but this time after a life lived full.

Russell J. Rickford has conducted extensive research to compile this biography, interviewing more than seventy of Betty Shabazz's family members, friends, colleagues and contemporaries as well as researching countless records and documents, including recently declassified FBI, CIA and New York Police files. This is the first complete look at the life of Betty Shabazz and a new insight into the man who was known as Malcolm X.

Betty Shabazz is the story of a strong woman who faced incredible tragedy and emerged triumphant, compassionate and always full of life. In the end, it is the story of a nation torn apart by hatred learning to heal and forgive. ... Read more

Book Description

Profiling 24 of the adult children of the most recognizable figures in the civil rights movement, this book collects the intimate, moving stories of families who were pulled apart by the horrors of the struggle or brought together by their efforts to change America. The whole range of players is covered, from the children of leading figures like Martin Luther King Jr. and martyrs like James Earl Chaney to segregationists like George Wallace and Black Panther leaders like Elaine Brown. The essays reveal that some children are more pessimistic than their parents, whose idealism they saw destroyed by the struggle, while others are still trying to change the world. Included are such inspiring stories as the daughter of a notoriously racist Southern governor who finds her calling as a teacher in an all-black inner-city school and the daughter of a famous martyr who unexpectedly meets her mother’s killer. From the first activists killed by racist Southerners to the current global justice protestors carrying on the work of their parents, these profiles offer a look behind the public face of the triumphant civil rights movement and show the individual lives it changed in surprising ways.

4-0 out of 5 stars A riveting new chapter to America's Civil Rights saga
The fates of those who sacrificed during the 60s to make America a more perfect union were varied; Some were cut down by assassins. Others re-defined the struggle by securing historic victories at the ballot box. Most simply returned to anonymity, choosing to bear the scars of battle in silence.
While many of these heroes remain unsung, the legacies of the more prominent among them have been well-documented in mainstream media outlets dutifully marking civil rights anniversaries as a way of gauging how far we've come since then. In some cases, these stories have now been re-told so often they seem dated and stale.
But John Blake's compelling new book, "Children of the Movement" traces those human blood lines forward and breathes life into these intimate -- but largely unknown-- family portraits. His interviews with the sons and daughters of those who fought for America's soul are at once inspiring, depressing, universal and utterly unpredictable.
Blake's sparing but effective writing frames each vignette, putting them in context without overwhelming you with tons of historical detail that might have detracted from the narrative. His book is not only a pleasure to read, but also informative, captivating and timely.
Most of all, "Children of the Movement" reminds us that while the struggle for civil rights has changed much in a generation, it is still far from over.

5-0 out of 5 stars Portrait of the Heart and Soul of the Freedom Movement
John Blake's book, "Children of the Movement," provides a powerful, if painful, glimpse into the heart and soul of the Freedom Movement of the Sixties, as, an insightful portrait of its legacy, through the lens of some of its children--one of whom is my own daughter, Ericka Abram. Blake's tenderly-written report reveals many common themes in the perspectives and lives of these offspring, the most compelling for me being that Movement parents seemed to have been so committed to our cause and protecting our children from the social ills we fought, we forgot to tell them what and why we were fighting. The resulting common disconnection between parents and children is more broadly reflected in the confusion and despair of today, in dealing with unrelenting racism and poverty and oppression, that stand in the stead of the clarity of purpose and commitment of the past. Blake's book opens the door to a healthy discussion toward healing familial wounds and easing generational divisions so as to bring us together in a new effort to finally find freedom in America.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Written more like a book of short stories than a chapter in America's history I found John Blake's writing style to be descriptive, straight forward, and appealing. Each page was full of substance and very readable. To my surprise I found myself unable to put this book down. I found food for thought and hours of discussion in this work.

John Blake's Children of the Movement gives one a view of the real life struggles of the men and women involved in the Civil Rights Movement. For those who are not familiar with the infamous names an explanation is given of each participant's standing in the movement but more interestingly a glimpse into the personality and humanness of each as well. He then goes a step further and brings a vivid picture of the effect these lives selflessly led had on the children. I was touched by the Black Panther leader who felt that if she saved all black children she would save her own child, a child who so wanted to be important in her mother's life. I was inspired by the daughter who now works by her father's side on the Algebra Project preparing black students for college. I was moved by one man's continued pursuit for justice in the murder of his brother. Each interview reminds us of the struggles of the parents and illustrates how each child was molded by the experience. Children of the Movement brings to light how much was sacrificed to share the Dream. ... Read more

Book Description

Malcolm X lived in difficult times - when some thought that black people were inferior to white people. But Malcolm believed that black people should stand up for their rights and he preached this belief everywhere he went. His message became popular because it was one of hope and pride. But it also became dangerous, because some people didn't agree with him. In 1965, one of these people shot and killed him. Even though his life was cut short by hatred, Malcolm X's ideas still affect people of all races. Here is his amazing story.

Book Description

On February 21, 1965, Malcolm X knew the end was near. For months he had been outrunning armed Muslims who wanted to kill him for breaking with Elijah Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, and defaming his name. And the strain showed as he moved to the podium in Harlem's Audubon Ballroom where a crowd of four hundred had gathered for a public rally -- only to witness Malcolm's X's violent end.

Malcolm X: The assassination explores the conspiracy theories that found the FBI and CIA responsible for the murder, examines the stories of the two Muslim brothers from a New York mosque who were wrongly convicted of the crime, and provides an in-depth analysis of Malcolm X relationship with Elijah Muhammad and the Nation of Islam.

Now, three decades later, the controversy behind the assassination still rages in today's headlines, and the unresolved circumstances of Malcolm's tragic death continue to create a haunting legacy for us all. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Weak Justification
This essentially contains the speech that Elijah Muhammad made after Malcolm X's assassination. Mostly for the faithful who still followed Elijah Muhammad as opposed to Malcolm. To fully put this into context, one must have some familiarity with the events surrounding Malcolm's death. As with most of Elijah Muhammad's writngs and/or speeches, it's not likely to appeal to those who do not consider themselves admireres or followers of his. Not likely to win any new converts.

5-0 out of 5 stars New Expanded edition is now out from Pathfinder
A new expanded edition of this book has been available since November 2002!
This new edition includes 43 more pages than the previous edition, with the complete text of Malcolm's Speech at Oxford and a more complete text of his speech at the London School of Economics. The expanded introduction together with Jack Barnes' "He spoke the truth to our generation of revolutionists," a memorial speech for Malcolm given in March 5, 1965, provides an excellent short introduction to Malcolm's life and ideas.

There is a six-page index, eight pages of notes, as well as an expanded photo display of 17 pages including Malcolm X with students and young people from Tanzania to Alabama, including a picture of Fidel Castro and Malcolm X smiling together in Harlem in 1960 when they were both still young!

This edition of Malcolm X Speaks to Young People is being produced together with a first-ever Spanish-language edition, entitled Malcolm X habla a la juventud, which is being released simultaneously by Pathfinder Press and by Casa Editora Abril, the publishing house of the Union of Young Communists in Cuba.

5-0 out of 5 stars Malcolm X: the internationalist
Malcolm X Talks to Young People is an immensely relevant and instructive book for the young and the young at heart. His words, spoken to university students in Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States in 1964-65, ring as true today as they did then.

"I just try to face the fact as it actually is and come to this meeting as one of the victims of America, one of the victims of Americanism, one of the victims of democracy, one of the victims of a very hypocritical system that is going all over this earth today representing itself as being qualified to tell other people how to run their country when they can't get the dirty things that are going on in their own country straightened out," he told students at the University of Ghana, May 13, 1964.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rebel Youth :Read This NOW,Then Autoiography
Originally issued as the first Gulf War began,in these pages Malcolm explains how in the Congo the US govt bombed women, men, children, and babies and called THEM terrorists,as he points out,the same as in Vietnam. He shows how it was the U.S. and U.S.-flunky ( "anti-Castro Cubans pilots" ) who were the terrorists in the Congo in the early to mid 1960s. At a time when the word "hero" is twisted so obscenely, it is a breath of fresh clean air to read Malcom's descriptions of the herois Simba fighters of the Congo who tried, and failed to liberate their country from U.S. neocolonial domination after kicking out the Belgian colonizers, and to hear him describe the equally heroic fighters who defeated the Empire in China and Cuba and Vietnam in the same terms. He exposes the use of UN cover for the Yanqui Empire's wars and drive for profits. He explains that these crimes are the doings of a system, the imperialist system ,as he calls it himself. He points out they use the cops to do the same at home :brutalize working people. Malcolm further points out that both the Republican AND the Democratic parties are the twin parties of racism and imperial exploitation. Oh yes, both parties ! He explains how he came to the conclusion that " capitalism is like a vulture...it used to be able to suck anybody's blood...but now it can only suck the blood of the helpless. It's only a matter of time , in my opinion, before it will collapse completely " and how he became prosocialist. He points to the Chinese, Vietnamese, and Cuban revolutions as examples for Blacks - today he would add and we can add, all working people -- to emulate in this country, in our time. And, he makes his stand to fight alongside anyone, any color, who fights to better condtiions for humans on this earth. As the 2nd Gulf War begins, again under UN cover and "inspections" just as the liberals pleaded, as more working people's blood, Iraq and American, for the sake of the oil profits of a tiny few, it is good to be reminded that as, Malcolm says in these pages, " The young generation of whites, Blacks, browns-you're living at a time of revolution." He was right then and he is still right. If you seek serious fundamental social change, you owe it to yourself to buy and STUDY this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Young People Still Need These Words
In these speeches and many others he gave in his last year, Malcolm X spoke to young people. His assassination prevented a nationwide tour of college campuses sponsored by the Young Socialists. What he told young people was not to advance themselves as individuals, but to join the worldwide struggle against imperialism. He told them to fight the capitalist rulers of the USA, to fight against racism and discrimination, to look to revolutionary fighters in Cuba, Africa, and Vietnam for the way forward. Young people still need these words.

5-0 out of 5 stars Malcolm X talks to young people
This is the great message to the people in the United States whether you are liberal or conservative, Domocrat or Republican, if you are looking for some stimilus for your life, I greatly recommend this book. The image of Malcolm X for most of American is very negative. Yet, Malcolm X provide us something very important to live in the society. You will know the Malcolm that you did not get to know from the movie "Malcolm X." ... Read more

Book Description

A collaborative effort of Christian scholar Lewis Baldwin and Muslim scholar Amiri Al-Hadid, Between Cross and Crescent details the interconnections between Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr.: their faith claims, their perspectives on culture, and their visions of the ideal society and world. The authors reject two common tendencies: to reduce Malcolm and Martin to "misguided, angry Muslim imam" and "gentle, harmless Christian preacher" and to treat the two men as polar opposites. The result is the most comprehensive and detailed work in print about the two leaders and the first to bring together a Muslim and a Christian scholar in dialogue about their relationship to such significant issues. Particularly original are the insights into how Martin and Malcolm viewed each other, family and children, and women (an entire chapter is devoted to the "character of womanhood"). "Al-Qur'an and Sunnah" offers a new and creative interpretation of Malik El-Shabazz as a Sunni Muslim and statesman. Of special importance is the skillful delineation of the historical and cultural forces underpinning the two leaders' religious and cultural perspectives--not the least being their common roots in traditions based in the American South. The authors also turn a careful scholar's eye to their perspectives on religion, interfaith dialogue, and the relationship between the African-American struggle and global liberation movements. There is no more detailed resource about the relationship between Martin King and Malcolm X. The depth of scholarship in this volume extends even to the extraordinary amount of information relegated to footnotes, themselves a gold mine of documentation for all readers interested in the interface between faith claims, politics, and social and cultural transformation. 5-0 out of 5 stars The affirmation of blackness: The life & words of Malcolm X
Jack Slater begins his book on "Malcolm X" for the Cornerstones of Freedom series by letting the black leader explain in his own words his message to African-American young people. One of the strengths of this juvenile biography of Malcolm X is that Slater quotes his subject as often as possible, not only on the major events in his life but his views on race in the United States. This book covers how the Malcolm Little ended up in prison and was transformed into Malcolm X, Minister of the Nation of Islam. However, while it does underscore the differences between Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr., I think it underplays the causes of the break between Malcolm X and Elijah Muhammad.Malcolm X's pilgrimage to Mecca is covered in some detail, as is his assassination. So while the book may not be as clear on some of the issues as other juvenile biographies, it does make excellent use of Malcolm X's own words. As Slater says in the author's note: "While he lived, Malcolm X's influence was broad. In death, his influence is beyond measure."I have found the Cornerstones of Freedom series to be an exceptional source for additional information on important historical topics that goes well beyond what students (and teachers) are likely to find in standard American History textbooks. ... Of all Asante's work, this book (compiled in 1993 during the height of Afrocentricity's platform and Malcolm X mania) stands out as one of the more accessible and endearing tomes of his oeuvre.Despite the eye-catching title (for its time), we are treated to some excellent essays on a variety of subjects, which is a refreshing departure from much of the metathoery of his other work. One of the things that people charge Afrocentrists with is not fashioning practical positions on contemporary issues, and justifiably so in many cases.Asante deals with genocide in Africa, Malcolm X, gender and television with aplomb, heart and a solid voice.

A must for Asante fans, and a greta book for essayists, debators and peopel who love challenging, original thought. ... Read more
