Book Description

Loving reminiscences of Eleanor Roosevelt by a close friend. William Levy met Eleanor Roosevelt in 1953 while researching a book on FDR. She invited him to tea, and thus began a warm friendship between the beloved "first lady of the world" and the young Anglican priest that would flourish until her death. This charming memoir is replete with flashes of Eleanor's personality and is filled with delicious domestic details that truly bring this extraordinary woman to life. This loving tribute from a close friend includes personal remembrances and details not previously available in the countless books about this most popular of first ladies. Noted historian Cynthia Russett provides the historical context for these reminiscences * Small format and period photos make this a wonderful keepsake Father William Turner Levy (Canoga Park, CA) taught literature at the City College, City University of New York. He is coauthor with Victor Scherle of Affectionately, T. S. Eliot: The Story of a Friendship, 1947-1965 and The Films of Frank Capra. Cynthia Eagle Russett (New Haven, CT) is a professor of history at Yale University. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A LOVING MEMOIR OF A FRIENDSHIP WITH MRS. ROOSEVELT
This short magical book, with 30 intmate photographs, does a great service to all who may have wished they had known Mrs. Roosevelt(The "Mrs.R" of the title). The author, William Turner Levy, reveals,in the affectionate telling of his longstanding friendship with Mrs. R,very touching and human dimensions to the already very detailed andhistoric portrait of Mrs. Roosevelt. It is through his enchanting andloving memoir, told through short delightful anadotes, that I gained newinsights and perspectives into the private life and personality of Mrs. R.Indeed, not only did I gain nuance, I gained a strong emotional sense ofwho this woman really was.The excellent comments incorporated throughoutthe book of Cynthia Eagle Russet, a professor of history at YaleUniversity, provided valuable historical and contextual insight into thesignificance of the role of Mrs. Roosevelt in shaping history and politics. I highly recommend this charming book to all those interested in Mrs. Rand a part of American history coming alive in new and fascinating ways. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The life of Eleanor Roosevelt as a case study in integrity
This is a brief juvenile biography examining the value of integrity in the life of Eleanor Roosevelt, the First Lady who devoted her life to helping others and working for peace. In a day when former First Lady Hilary Clinton is now a member of the U.S. Senate (as is Elizabeth Dole, another woman who wanted to be First Lady), it will be interesting to young readers to look back at Eleanor Roosevelt, who was attacked before she went around the country as the eyes and ears (not to mention legs) of her husband, President Franklin D. Roosevelt.Nancy Ellwood explains in simple terms why Eleanor Roosevelt was one of the most admired women of the 20th century; you would be hard pressed to name another woman who was admired for as long a period of time during her life.Ellwood emphasizes this by showing that what Mrs. Roosevelt did after her husband died and she left the White House was as important as what she did as First Lady.Working for civil rights, women's rights, and world peace, she was clearly a visionary. The idea of integrity is but one of several qualities that come to mind in reading about her life.

These books are aimed at very young readers. Each "chapter" consists of a full-page black & white photograph on one side, usually tinted in some color, and a simple paragraph of text.Vocabulary words appear in bold face with the pronunciations provided immediately afterwards and the definitions provided in the back of the book in the glossary.Ellwood provides basic biographical information, but the strength of this book is in the use of vivid details that drive home Eleanor Roosevelt's uniqueness: for example, as First Lady she only talked to female reporters, which forced newspapers to hire women.Consequently, this is one of the better Character Building Books.Other titles in this series look at Oprah Winfrey and assertiveness, Princess Diana and charity, Christopher Reeve and courage, Steven Spielberg and creativity, and Muhammad Ali and strength of character.

4-0 out of 5 stars short but spectacular
this book is a brief, easily accessible account of eleanor's life and the impact she made on the world. perfect for 2,3, and 4th graders. ... Read more
