Book Description

1921. This book is a collection of intimate remembrances of the author's brother, Theodore Roosevelt. It is not written as a biography or a political history of the times, although Robinson was careful in her effort to record the facts accurately and carefully searched her memory before relating conversations or experiences. Robinson hopes this work will paint a clear picture of Roosevelt by one who was closest to him and one who knew his loyalty and tenderness of heart. ... Read more

The Rough Riders have earned a place in American history as a "can do" group of patriots. They saw their duty in the Spanish-American War and did it.Their activities also sealed the reputation of Theodore Roosevelt as a "can do" leader. He grabbed that appellation and ran with it all the way to the presidency. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An American icon's personal view of the Spanish-American War
"The Rough Riders," by Theodore Roosevelt, is the author's memoir of his experiences as part of the First United States Volunteer Cavalry during the Spanish-American War.The book's title comes from the nickname earned by the unit. The copyright page notes that the text was originally published in 1899.TR tells about the recruitment and training of the Rough Riders, their voyage to Cuba, their battles, and their return home.

Much of the book concerns what, in TR's opinion, makes for good soldiers and good leaders.Although the book first appeared over a century ago, I found many of TR's observations startlingly relevant to contemporary warfare; he discusses wartime refugees, guerrilla warfare, wartime atrocities, and battlefield news correspondents.Other topics covered include illness among the troops and the impact of weather and terrain on warfare. He also discusses occasional humorous material, such as the nicknames some soldiers earned.

Roosevelt includes fascinating technical details about the weapons of this era.Although he frankly discusses the violence, wounds, and deaths of the battlefield, overall I got a sense that TR saw the war as a grand adventure-even fun on a certain level. The writing style is very engaging and has a clear, matter-of-fact quality.TR's admiration and love for his troops ultimately gives the book a real warmth and humanity. This is truly a landmark in the rich canon of American military memoirs.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Boys and Men Who Charged Up San Juan Hill with Teddy
They came from all over the United States and the Western Territories. They were Ivy Leaguers, Cowboys, Indians, Sheriffs, Outlaws, Civil War veterans, Indian fighters, businessmen. Men like Allyn Capron, Buckey O'Neill, (future Secretary of the Navy) Frank Knox, Hamilton Fish, the famed Indian fighter Leonard Wood, and of course the bespectacled Assistant Secretary of the Navy, former New York Police Commissioner and sometime cowboy named Theodore Roosevelt.

The "Rough Riders" is Roosevelt's classic story of these highly motivated volunteers who eagerly volunteered to fight in the Spanish-American war, and whom many, including the regular army officer Capron, the Arizona sheriff O'Neill, Fish and others paid the ultimate price. And not all of the nearly 1000 men who volunteered ever made it over to Cuba. Several troops, to their everlasting sorrow, and nearly all of the horses had to stay in Tampa, the port of embarkation, because of a lack of troopships.

Roosevelt tells the entire story, which helped catapult him to the Presidency, of the feisty former Confederate Cavalry commander Joseph Wheeler, who commanded all of the volunteer cavalry, and who, to the amusement of his men, blurted out at Las Guismas, "We've got the damn Yankees on the run" - momentarily lapsing into Chickamauga, not Cuba!, and of how San Juan Hill was stormed and captured under intense fire from Spanish rifles, gatling guns, and cannon, and giving praise not just to his own men, but to the accompanying Black Cavalrymen of the 9th and 10th cavalry, and of the regular infantry units that were involved in the operation.

The colorful and fact-based story of brave American men who fought for the freedom of others, now sadly under totalitarian rule. A Classic slice of Americana written by one of America's best.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great reading on TR
This was Teddy Roosevelt's account of his beloved Rough Riders and how they and him, virtually won the war in Cuba single-handed during the Spanish American War. I personally thought the book was well written, very informative about the character of the war, problems and individuals that make up the Rough Riders and Roosevelt's own take on the war. I am pretty sure that Teddy didn't write this book just for history. He had politics in mind when he wrote it and he made sure that he was at the center of the universe in his own book. Actually, there isn't nothing wrong with that since the book reads well and Roosevelt was generous with his praises toward many people. Teddy was also quite insightful in his observations of the way our military campaign in Cuba was being handled. It was clear that he did care a lot about his men and took his responsiblity seriously. A good reading material on the Spanish American War even with the pro-Teddy bias, you can't help but to be entertained by it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Charge Into Americana!
In "The Rough Riders" the story of this famed regiment flows from pen of its creator and commander, Theodore Roosevelt.Beginning with his preparations for war while serving as Assistant Secretary of the Navy, TR takes the reader along during the four month life of this romantic regiment.

A polyglot collection of Cowboys and Indians, lawmen and outlaws, Ivy Leaguers and half-breeds, the Rough Riders captured the imagination of the nation.Authorized to organize a volunteer cavalry from the western territories, Roosevelt, recognizing that his own limited military experience may prevent the regiment from a timely arrival at the front, accepted the position of second in command to his friend, Leonard Wood. With Wood's leadership and Roosevelt's energy building on the rough and tumble abilities of its troops, the Rough Riders were quickly whipped into shape and shipped to the embarkation site in Tampa.

Struggling to get to the port and aboard ship, the Rough Riders were among the first troops to get into combat.Charging up Kettle Hill during the attack on the San Juan Hills, the Rough Riders passed through glory on their way to the trenches surrounding Santiago.

With the Spaniards vanquished, the Rough Riders took on a more lethal foe, disease, prominently malaria. As a volunteer officer who did not have to fear official retribution, TR took the lead in fighting for an early return of the army to the U. S. before it was destroyed by tropical diseases.

TR tells the Rough Rider story from every angle. The reader meets its characters and learns its legends. We learn of its triumphs and its disappointments, such as leaving many of its men and most of its horses in Florida. We read of the challenges of transport, landing, fighting and marching. The brass come in for both praise and criticism.

At times the descriptions of the individual soldiers can make the book a bit slow, but for description of the action, it is great.Enjoy this classic piece of Americana!

"I am going to try to help the cause of better government...I don't exactly know how..." Teddy Roosevelt spoke these words when he graduated from college. William Roscoe Thayer's sharply-penned and sensible biography of Roosevelt describes the pathways the politician travelled in search of truth and justice. He was born a frail, asthmatic boy who strengthened his fragile body into a solid well-built frame with a tendency for great endurance. His previous scholarly pursuits honed his mind to a keen edge, allowing a stunning partnership of intelligence and physical stamina that is a combination unmatched for political durability. Thayer knew Roosevelt for 40 years. During the final 10 years of the president's life, Thayer spent more time with him than in the earlier years. Because of this intense companionship, Thayer was able to observe how Roosevelt's career and motives worked toward an achievement of "better government." He witnessed his motives, the exercise of his character during major crises, and how his thoughts became a chief element in the dynamic growth of the United States. Roosevelt brought forth the idea of "a square deal"; the American people consider the fight against injustice his most representative quality. He targeted the suspension of financial abuses so that only the monetarily privileged would not have the benefit of gathering and distributin wealth. Yet even though a member of his Cabinet distinguished Roosevelt's predominant trait as combativeness, the president was not threatening but rather persuasive and reasonable. His remarkable personal vitality gives every reader of this volume an awareness of great fortune to claim Theodore Roosevelt as America's leader. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Thematic Study
"Velvet On Iron" is a study of the diplomacy of Theodore Roosevelt, organized by themes, rather than by events. The essays cover TR in the context of his times, consider the credibility of his foreign policy as well as the role of morality in its formulation, contrast his reality with his myth and evaluate the influence of his cosmopolitan background on his diplomacy.

This book touches on specific incidents, such as the Algeciras and Portsmouth Conferences and the Alaskan boundary and Venezuelan crises, only in the context of what they reveal about the character trait of TR which is the subject of the particular essay.

This relatively short book stimulates thought about TR's character and his management of foreign policy. I recommend it for the serious student of TR, but only after a study his life through other sources. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars More than Words
Theodore Roosevelt not only wrote to his kids, but also drew great pictures. One of his best in here is a drawing of TR playing tennis. Before widespread telphones, and certainly prior to cell phones, people seemed to dash off notes to each other more frequently. One school of TR thought says Teddy simply loved writing to his kids in profusion. The revisionist school says, of course he did, since he was so frequently away.

TR's letters to his son Quentin are especially touching, since later on Quentin took a German gunner's bullet through the head over France, driving TR into inconsolate murmerings lamenting the loss of his "Quentee-Quee."The development of these nicknames is chronicled in these letters.

For whatever reason TR wrote them, they read very movingly.TR's own namesake, Ted Jr., tried to pull off the same thing with his kids, documented in another out-of-print book written by Ted Jr (before his early heart attack during WWII) called "All in the Family."Wherein little Ted's mistake is to too slavishly imitate big TR's way of organizing walks, going camping, and dashing off notes. So there is something inimitable here, which should also caution the modern reader from hankering too quickly to start writing letters-a-plenty.But the picture drawing might be OK.What kid wouldn't like a few more scribbled pictures from their dad?

So at least look at the pictures here.Unlike Ronald Reagan's, these were done to and for TR's own kids. Not to dump on Ron, but to perhaps establish a reference point among competing versions of family dysfunction. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars There is a lot more to T.R. than the great Teddy Bear story
This semester in my Popular Culture class I asked my students what they were most surprised to learn from reading about the history of 20th Century Pop Culture. The clear winner was that the teddy bear was created to honor Theodore Roosevelt. The story of how an American president became identified with a bear club is told in an engaging manner by Robert Quackenbush in "Don't You Dare Shoot That Bear!: A Story of Theodore Roosevelt."

Quackenbush makes it clear to young readers that T.R. did not set out to be president.Roosevelt was a sickly little boy, suffering from asthma, whose fierce determination would overcome that and other obstacles throughout his life.As a boy he thought he wanted to be a naturalist (or maybe a cowboy), and then tried becoming an author.Eventually he became an explorer, a historian, an orator, a philanthropist, a statesman, and a devoted family man who would play with his kids on the front lawn of the White House. This book covers the story of T.R.'s life to the point where he became president and then the infamous hunting trip to Mississippi in 1902.His hosts, wishing the president to return home with a suitable trophy, had trapped a bear cub for him to shoot. However, Roosevelt refused to fire at the helpless creature.

When Clifford Berryman's cartoon in the Washington Star showed Roosevelt, rifle in hand, with his back turned to a cowering bear cub, T.R. had captured the hearts of the American people.Because of the publicity of Berryman's cartoon a Russian immigrant toy manufacturer in New York, Morris Michtom, made a stuffed bear cub toy with button eyes and put it in his shop window along with the cartoon. Soon he had customers eager to buy their own "Teddy's bears" as they were originally called.A year later Michtom had formed a company just to make the bears, which were the most popular toys of their day, and soon Americans could buy them wearing custom-made clothes and hats.

Actually, the story of the teddy bear is only one page in this book, illustrated as always with Quackenbush's droll cartoons (beneath the text opposite the full page illustration their are teddy bear's commenting on the story being told about T.R.'s life). But it is a great hook to introduce Theodore Roosevelt to young readers.Young readers might think they know nothing about T.R. beyond his face being on Mt. Rushmore, so the link to the teddy bear should get them interested.Other books in this series by Quackenbush include "Mark Twain? What Kind of Name Is That?: A Story of Samuel Longhorne Clemens," "Who Said There's No Man on the Moon?: A Story of Jules Verne," and ""Ahoy! Ahoy! Are You There?: A Story of Alexander Graham Bell."From all of these juvenile biographies you can expect more of the same. ... Read more
