It's so fascinating to read the journal of a little boy who became President. This is a captivating and well-written book that gives kids a ton of ideas for keeping a journal for themselves. A wonderfully illustrated juvenile biography of T.R.
"Rough Riding Reformer: Theodore Roosevelt" presents the life story of the 26th President, covering his illness-plagued childhood as well as his varied careers as a rancher, soldier, and political reformer.Gary L. Blackwood begins the volume with the day T.R. became, at the age of 42, the youngest President in American history, and suggests that he goes one to become one of the greatest.This juvenile history is organized in chapter titled with the names by which Roosevelt was known throughout his life.Consequently, his childhood comes under the heading of "Teddie," his college life and early political career as "Teddy," the cattle rancher who called himself "Theodore," "The Colonel" who fought in the Spanish-American War, and finally "Mr. President."Roosevelt's life is illustrated with not only historic photographs of Roosevelt's personal and political life, but a painting of his mother, a sketch of a mouse drawn by T.R. as a young naturalist as well as one of Colonel Roosevelt in his Rough Rider uniform by Charles Dana Gibson (the Gibson girl guy), and some choice political cartoons (including one of T.R. speaking softly with his big stick).These illustrations really add a nice dimension to this volume (there is even a painting portraying the Roosevelts as a family of lively bears).

Blackwood covers not only all of the key biographical elements of Roosevelt's life but all sorts of details that flesh out his dynamic character.Young readers will get a sense of not only how Roosevelt ruffled feathers as a progressive politician but how most of the things for which he fought are now principles accepted by pretty much all Americans.They will also learn how a sickly youth grew up to be a rugged hunter and how he over came the stunning personal tragedy of having his mother and first wife die on the same day to father a large and boisterous family.As an introductory biography to the life of Theodore Roosevelt this is an excellent little volume, which makes marvelous use of the illustrations, from the colorized cover to the newspaper headline about the sinking of the battleship "Maine."Other Benchmark Biographies look at a diverse group of individuals, from Abigail Adams and George Catlin to Sir Edmund Hillary and Wyton Marsalis. ... A juvenile biograph of T.R. as the first celebrity president
This is the first juvenile biography of Theodore Roosevelt that I have come across that does not start in media res with T.R. becoming the youngest President in American history after William McKinley's assassination.Instead, Robert Green keeps in mind the world in which his young readers live and introduces Roosevelt in terms of being "At the Bully Pulpit," as the first president to use the press to speak to the people.Consequently, Green presents T.R. in this Profiles of the Presidents volume as the first celebrity president and argues that Roosevelt made the presidency a little more like himself.

That critical perspective is one of the things that makes this a stand out juvenile biography of Theodore Roosevelt.Green provides all of the standard biographical information on how the sickly child suffering from asthma turned himself into a cattleman, progressive politician, Rough Rider, Governor of New York, and eventually landed in the White House.However, Green also lays out the specifics of Roosevelt's progressivism in terms of trust busting, making foods and medicines safe, workplace safety, and preserving national resources.Again, most of these elements will resonate with young readers.

Another strength of the book are the illustrations, which include not only historic photographs but also a couple of choice political cartoons of T.R.The back of the book includes a Glossary, a 2-page spread of Theodore Roosevelt's Life at a Glance, a 6-page look at Theodore Roosevelt's Life and Times, as well as extensive resources for understand T.R.The Profiles of the Presidents series is an excellent place for young readers to turn to for an introduction to the life of one of the Presidents.Green has put together one of the better volumes in this series because he sets up a specific perspective and follows it through.
