Book Description

"Julie Foudy knows what it's lie to wear gold: She has first place medals from the Women's World Cup 1991, the 1996 Olympic Games, and the Women's World Cup 1999.And she knows what it's like to play a grueling soccer match in front of thousands of screaming fans and to sign autographs for hours after the match is done. But that wasn't always the case, for only in recent years has women's soccer become a widely played and watched event.Julie Foudy's story is not just about great soccer games; it's about how one woman's determination helped change an obscure sport into one with millions of fans." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Foudy is the best!!!
This book takes a look at one of the greatest female soccer players in the world. It gives an over-view of her life as she grew up and when she joined the Women's National Team. The book also has some very nice photos of Foudy in action. This is a good book for any fan of women's soccer and Julie Foudy. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars John Harkes: A True American Success Story
What can I say about this book? Well, I can tell you that it is an inspiring story about an American-born soccer player who with soccer in his blood, goes out and accomplishes his dream. He tells about how he grew up playing in the soccer crazed town of Kearny, New Jersey to honing his craft at the University of Virginia to taking his talents to the professional level in England and later back to his home country of the U.S.A. He tells about his triumphs and disappointments at all levels of his career. It's a great read for those who are soccer fans. When reading this book, I felt like I was actually there with Harkes as he tells the excitement of World Cup '94 and the disappointment when he was dropped from the U.S. National Team and did not make it to France in '98. I encourage fans of "the greatest sport in the world" to buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and Magnificant
I received the book and on that same day was half-way throught it. This is the book to read if you're an American Soccer fan. John takes you behind the scenes of his career in and out of the states. From his hometown of Kearny, NJ to the Premier League and now to the MLS. He talks in great detail of his early proffessional struggles and enormous successes. He tell you what kept him out of France 98 and what he plans for the future. I grew up looking up at John Harkes as a soccer player. This book showed me more than just a great soccer player but a great person. A must read if your a soccer fan or one who is curious about the game!

5-0 out of 5 stars Justice
A fresh look into the purposeful misleading and lies of Steve Sampson and his mishandling of the US Men's National Team at France '98. For me, the background was good, but the reading on the France '98 team is essential to anybody who cares about US Soccer. John Harkes is owed an apology by Steve Sampson and the powers that be at US Soccer for the way he was treated after giving it all up for the glory of the game in the USA. Sampson may dispute the facts put down by Harkes, but the book got published, Harkes never got sued, Harkes is still playing and Sampson is coaching kids soccer (right where he belongs.) Attitude? Dang right. Too many people, like John Harkes, Marcelo Balboa, Alexi Lalas et.al. poured their lives in elevating the game to an unheard of level in the states, only to be lied to, whispered about, and then ultimately begged by the boss, himself, Judas Sampson, to "take it easy on him, he's only a human being." Calling himself a human being is a slap in the face to the genus as a whole.

5-0 out of 5 stars The phatest book ever
"Captain for Life" is the greatest book ever to be publisheds. It gives the most interesting, deep insight of one of the greatest Americans÷ to ever play the game of soccert. Everywhere John Harkes goes, the most fanatics from the best soccer countries adores and loves the Harskey. "Captain for Life" is definitely the top autiobiography out right now. Once you start reading this book, you will not be able to put it down. Take my advice. This is coming from a person that doesn't read often.

5-0 out of 5 stars Forever an Owl
John Harkes - a great player, a great guy and now a great author. John made a great impact upon the british game, and is remembered with great affection among Sheffield Wednesday fans for he reminds us of the great times we had whilst John was with us. The book is a great insight into John's career, from his teenage days in Kearny to his time in England and as a founder player of the relatively recent MLS league. I found it an enthralling read and was loathed to put it down!! I particularly enjoyed reading John's explanation for his leaving the Owls, as we all felt John Had been unfairly treated. If you enjoy soccer, you'll love this book. It highlights the highs and low's of John's career, and provides personal insights into John Harkes the man. John you're gone (from England) but not forgotten. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
i was so happy when i purchased this book. Infact, i would have paid almost anything for it...could not put it down for 1 second. the text was extremly insightful and what was even better was the added photos...Defintely would reccomend this biography to everyone!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Magnificant
I have just recently become a daivd beckham fan so i purchased this book and to my surprise it was one of the best biographies i have ever read. David talks about not only his love for his family but his feelings about man. united and england soccer. This is a must buy for all soccer fans!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beckham lovers will love the book! Even Beckham haters!
My mother brought me this book in England just recently. I've wanted to have the book since it was first released, but its rather expensive if you buy it in Indonesia.
I have been an England fan, a Man United fan, and a Beckham since I was in secondary school 8 years ago. I knew Beckham since he was in the youth club. I lived in England at that time.
I think the book is excellent. The photos are too. I already knew a lot a bout Beckham, but since I read the book, I found out new things that made me respect him even more. He really loves his family and ofcourse football. Hes a real professional! For those of you who are Beckham fans, reading this book is a must! For those who aren't or are even Beckham haters, you'd definitely change your opinion about him. Salute!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice book! Worth buying!
I bought this book in harcover edition via the amazon.uk.co for the reason that it's cheaper to buy from the UK instead of the US. I'm not an American, and either am I a football fan but after reading this book, I think I'm becoming addicted to football games. If you ever know something about Beckham you might know him as the husband of a Spice Girl/Victoria, but there are something more than that. You see this book, and youknow that there's something special towards Beckham. His determination for love and for football is amazing. The book "My world" tells you all because it's only written by Beckham himself. It shows us a intimate look inside Beckham's life. Though it's not that NEW you know, but it's still so great. With the pictures and the words inside this book, you'll know who Beckham is, or who Beckham TRULY is. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great book and great manager
having worked with sir alex i can say hes the best there is. players love working for him. he tells it how it is and is always fair.

1-0 out of 5 stars Fergie's book
A distinctly average book, by a very average man. Nothing special here at all. Go for something worthwhile like David Beckham's book. Or the Tweenies....

5-0 out of 5 stars Story of a deserving soccer legend
There can be no doubt that Sir Alex Ferguson will go down in history as one of soccer's truly great figures from the late 20th Century. His treble winning season with United in 1998/99 was possibily the pinnacle of a long career in the game, both as a player and coach, but in his insightful autobiography he devotes more pages to the early days of his career - as a strapping young Scottish lad trying to overcome the burden of near-poverty and become a professional footballer.

Ferguson writes as he played and coaches - with overwhelming passion and dedication to all aspects of the task at hand. He paints the grim picture of his early days, and introduces the reader to some of the colourful characters he's met over the years both on and off the pitch. It is both entertaining and confrontational - he writes honestly and occasionally attacks the FA and certain individuals in the game, and although he may be blatant at times he cannot be criticised for his truthful and forthright manner.

'Managing My Life' is a remarkable autobiography in that it reveals a great deal of his character and motivation, and unlocks the door to the mind of the world game's truly brilliant managers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Book about a truly great coach
Being an avid supporter of Manchester United I have always been very keen to have an insight into the life and times of one of the club's greatest ever manager.

The book clearly portrays the great mans early days and his tough upbringing by the Clyde in Glasgow. Uniquely, in a city which had major religous differences Alex's parents were from a mixed marriage. We get a great insight into Alex's early footballing life and the tough times that his family endured in surviving.
A fascinating discussion about Alex Fergusans time as a player were amongst other clubs represented Glasgow Rangers. Even as a player we could to realise that he had a volatile temperment which would continue to serve him as a natural football leader.

From success at the unfashionable Aberdeen football Club to the pressures of managing one of the biggest sports clubs in the world Alex remains how much his childhood upbringing continues to be a major backbone of his life.

A truly great read into the one of soccers most respected characters.

5-0 out of 5 stars very good book
This book mostly talked about his life off of the pitch and all the stress he went thourgh in the the World Cup.

5-0 out of 5 stars A true soccer genius
I bought this book about a year ago. It is an inside look into Ronaldo's life, more about his personal life than his career on the pitch. Ronaldo is truly the best player on earth, despite FIFA's thoughts of Zizou. Ronaldo is up there with the Gods of the sporting world: Michael Jordan, Mohammed Ali, Pele, Johann Cruyff, Eusebio, Diego Armando Maradona, etc. If you think you know Ronaldo, read this book...

5-0 out of 5 stars this book is not onely about star its about brazil
i got this book for my birth day a i read it. i thought that itall talk a bout soccer, but it didn't. i taked abot how he grow up inbrazil and how the enverment was so diffecult in there. how he escaped from all bad things like gaging and drug and alcholes. his father was not so lucky. he smoked and he had alot of alckholes and drug. he was very unkind to his wife and his son. there fore, his wife decided to built up her self and her son.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book explains Ronaldo`s life on and off the pitch
This book is GREAT! It explains Ronaldo`s footballing life and his personal, and public life, and many secrets only a few on the earth know.

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazingly gripping story of the Football God of the 90's!
Ever since the final whistle of the World Cup final I have had a big unanswered question. Why did the world's best player in the world's best team play so badly in the one game, the most important game, of his life so far, giving one of the world's worst performances in front of the world's biggest ever event audience of 2 billion. Months before the world cup the papers were full of Ronaldo. How Ronaldo would score more goals than ever seen before. How this would be his world cup like Pele's 1970, Kempes' 1978, Rossi's 1982, Maradona's 1986, and Romario's 1994. TV Programmes showed endless clips of his sublime skills, his genius. Months after the tragedy that was France '98. No credible explanation has appeared until now!! Clarkson's book to answer the question of what happened on that fateful day in Paris. He gives a complete picture of what makes up the man - Ronaldo. Clarkson delves into Ronaldo's childhood, giving an account of the early flashes of brilliance, his love of the game, his disappointments, the influence of his family and even his lack of confidence with girls. Then he takes us through Ronaldo's early career in a lowly 2nd division Brazillian League team. Then the breakthrough and subsequent move to Europe followed by stardom and megabucks. Then we are told of the trials and tribulations of his life in Europe. The immense build up to the World cup and the account of what actually happened to Ronaldo's Brazil. I must confess I did not let the book go until i had read in from cover to cover. Clarkson has a lovely smooth flowingly style of writing which captures the essence of the story. After reading the book I felt i had understood one of the most intriguing mysteries of footballing history. ... Read more

Book Description

This extraordinary book charts David Beckham's rise to celebrity during his years in Manchester.

At the age of 3 David Beckham's parents gave him a Manchester United shirt as a Christmas present, beginning a relationship with the club that was to last a quarter of a century. He signed schoolboy terms in May 1988, eventually joining United as a trainee in July 1991 and moving up to Manchester to begin what was to become an extraordinary story.

From relatively early days, right up to his departure for Real Madrid, Eamonn and James Clarke, the Manchester paparrazi, have recorded his unofficial story-even before he came to prominence as a player and well before his meteoric rise to iconic status.

They were there when he was a young player finding his feet at the club, there to see him out and about with girlfriends or team colleagues, there when "Posh Spice" arrived on the scene, and there to see him becoming a proud father and family man.

And they were the first to photograph him, with the cut above his eye, walking in Manchester after the boot-kicking incident with Sir Alex Ferguson, when it began to dawn on everyone that David Beckham's time at Manchester United was almost over.

In an introductory text, and through extended captions, Eamonn and James Clarke describe their work and encounters with David Beckham. The two brothers have worked as the Manchester paparrazi for the last 10 years. Their images appear regularly on the front pages of the press in the UK as well as internationally in magazines.

5-0 out of 5 stars Julie Foudy rules!
This book is about Julie Foudy, the greatest soccer player ever! It begins by trying to explain just how impressive it is to watch her play. The book then goes to her childhood, and how her family helped her to become a great player. It explains all the sports she played in from the time she was a child till now. It also tells you about the people, and events, in her life that made her who she is today. Her role in the 1996 Olympics is explained, and so is her position on child labor. In my opinion, Julie Foudy is the best soccer player ever, and this book tells for how she got to where she is. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Stick to your day job, honey
Even with a writer to aid him, it's clear that Schmeichel is more skilled with his hands and feet than with words.

You have to be a Schmeichel fan - as I am - to want to read this book from cover to cover.. Great literature it ain't.

I was disappointed that it did not give me more insights about his relationship with his mates in Man U, and his relationship with Ferguson - whose own books are eminently more interesting and insightful than this one. It was a little too much a Me Me Me book.

Perhaps the problem I had was that I read this book right after reading a transcript of interviews with Johan Cruyff, who is as skilled speaking as he was toying with a football.

Still, if one is interested in goalkeeping and goalkeepers, this would be a decent read even for a non Schmeichel fan.
