5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond travel
Tom Swick has written not just an exceptional travel book, but an exceptional book. Period. Horizon broadening, mind opening, amusing, pure pleasure.

5-0 out of 5 stars The world's mine oyster, which I with pen will open.
Delightful! Thomas Swick's writing is elegant, his observations about the places I've been to are perfect, and his descriptions of places I haven't seen make me feel like I've just been there. Highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
This book is surprising gem of exploration and biography. Johnson makes excellent use of a vast colection of maps, something sorely lacking in many similar books. His grasp of history and the ocean make this a particularly good and informative read.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent biography of Henry Hudson
Not much is known about Henry Hudson, and records are few, but Johnson manages to piece together all of the main elements into one easily-readable book. Johnson also brings his own experience as a sailor to the book, giving it a new facet for readers. Based mostly on Hudson's own journals, this is a concise picture of Hudson's known voyages, with a lot of interesting and informative asides. I recommend this book ... Read more

Book Description

Captain Paul Watson has rammed fishing trawlers, smashed whaling ships, sailed boldly into Soviet-controlled waters, and stood bravely on an ice floe between a baby harp seal and an oncoming seal boat. In this daring and sprawling memoir, the captain of the Sea Shepherd recounts his remarkable life on the front lines in the war to stop the viscious slaughter of the Canadian harp seal.

Seal Wars opens in 1996 with Paul Watson -- holed up in a hotel with Martin Sheen in the Magdalen Islands and facing an attacking mob of angry sealers -- being rescued by police and airlifted to safety. Watson recounts the childhood experiences that shaped his adult consciousness and environmental ethic. He records a history of the seal hunt (including all the tragedies, brutalities, and government mismanagement and obfuscation) from its beginning up to the rescue campaigns he courageously led from the prow of the Sea Shepherd.

Starting in 1976 with a Greenpeace crew off Labrador, Paul Watson has braved numerous forays onto the ice floes, many with such celebrities as Brigitte Bardot, Farley Mowat, Martin Sheen, and Pierce Brosnan. He has served time in prison, debated politicians, and quite often put his life on the line. In a passionate defense of environmental responsibility, Seal Wars guides us through the highs and lows, the defeats and successes of Watson's untiring devotion to this noble cause. ... Read more

Book Description

Elsie Sark, an enigma and a legend, came to the Lennox Island Reserve, Prince Edward Island, in 1918 as the English bride of Mi'kmaq war hero John J. Sark.

Greeted on arrival by her father-in-law Chief John T. Sark and an assembly of Mi'kmaq residents, she found herself in the midst of a community in conflict. Without relinquishing her Victorian manner she settled on the Reserve, raising a family. Her life story sheds new light on Native-white relations on Prince Edward Island, but more than that, it bears witness to one woman's dedication to her community and family.

Micmac by Choice is the inspiring account of a remarkable woman and of the remarkable community she chose as her home.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Black Pit and Beyond
The Black Pit and Beyond is a gracefully written account of a young man's experiences as a Merchant Navy radio officer in World War II. J. Gordon Mumford shares with readers not only the grim realities of war, but also his personal story. While he was still only a boy himself, the author faced life-threatening situations, and at the same time was dealing with the emotional backlash of a traumatic childhood, the death of his father, and a turbulent relationship with his mother. It's these personal details that make his story particularly poignant. It puts a face on and real feeling behind a war that many of my generation have forgotten. The Black Pit and Beyond is a great read for anyone interested in this page in history told through a personal perspective. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I understand how Nowlan held office for forty years.
Conrad's book is not a political biography, but a history of politics in Nova Scotia and Canada.Accordingly one can learn about more than the life of George Nowlan, federal finance minister and long time member ofparliament from the Annapolis Valley. Nowlan's son also represented theNova Scotia riding but without his father's success or longevity. Thedetails of local organization and party machinery are as interesting andrevealing as the larger picture of Nowlan's part in national politics.Political history is shown to be a result and part of the social context. ... by Ed Butts, Harold Horwood

Catlog: Book (1988)

Book Description

Convincing proof that Canadian history is anything but dull, this book recounts the action-filled careers of some of the country's most successful and violent adventurers, licit and illicit.

From Elizabethan privateers seeking fortune off the coasts of Newfoundland to the courtly warriors of Acadia, from the wildly successful letter-of-marque ships of Liverpool, Nova Scotia to the vicious sea fights of the War of 1812, Horwood and Butts reconstruct the lives of the country's finest fighting seamen. Inland, they consider the less reputable careers of the gangs who fought for control of gold and timber in the raw frontier settlements that would one day be Canada.

Featuring plently of fast-paced action Bandits and Privateers brings the excitement of Canadian history to life.
