Book Description

Within 20 years -- possibly far sooner -- China will have the world’s largest economy. That will powerfully impact you: your job, your company, your economic future, and your country. In The Chinese Century, Oded Shenkar shows how China is restoring its imperial glory by infusing modern technology and market economics into a non-democratic system controlled by the Communist party and bureaucracy.

Shenkar shows why China’s accelerating growth differs radically from predecessors such as Japan, India, and Mexico -- and how it will lead to a radical restructuring of the global business system. Discover why the U.S. is most vulnerable to China’s ascent... how China’s disregard for intellectual property creates sustainable competitive advantage... and how China’s growth impacts every global business and consumer.

Above all, Shenkar shows what you must do to survive and prosper in "the Chinese Century."

· Cheap labor + millions of high-skilled professionals

· How China will sustain dominance in low-tech industries as it enters high-tech realms

· Building tomorrow’s Toyotas and Sonys... faster and cheaper

· Chinese multinationals: learning from joint ventures, preparing to lead

· Leveraging Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, and the "Chinese diaspora"

· Bringing together the world’s most powerful pool of human resources

· $2 Rolexes, and beyond

· Piracy, counterfeiting, bootlegging, and stolen intellectual property

· From economics to geopolitics: counterbalancing America

· Previewing China’s increasingly assertive foreign policy ... Read more

Book Description

Cover art my vary.

"In the beginning we were happy. And we were always excessive. So in the beginning we were happy to excess." With these opening lines Sean Wilsey takes us on an exhilarating tour of life in the strangest, wealthiest, and most grandiose of families.

Sean's blond-bombshell mother (one of the thinly veiled characters in Armistead Maupin's bestselling Tales of the City) is a 1980s society-page staple, regularly entertaining Black Panthers and movie stars in her marble and glass penthouse, "eight hundred feet in the air above San Francisco; an apartment at the top of a building at the top of a hill: full of light, full of voices, full of windows full of water and bridges and hills." His enigmatic father uses a jet helicopter to drop Sean off at the video arcade and lectures his son on proper hygiene in public restrooms, "You should wash your hands first, before you use the urinal. Not after. Your penis isn't dirty. But your hands are."

When Sean, "the kind of child who sings songs to sick flowers," turns nine years old, his father divorces his mother and marries her best friend. Sean's life blows apart. His mother first invites him to commit suicide with her, then has a "vision" of salvation that requires packing her Louis Vuitton luggage and traveling the globe, a retinue of multiracial children in tow. Her goal: peace on earth (and a Nobel Prize). Sean meets Indira Gandhi, Helmut Kohl, Menachem Begin, and the pope, hoping each one might come back to San Francisco and persuade his father to rejoin the family. Instead, Sean is pushed out of San Francisco and sent spiraling through five high schools, till he finally lands at an unorthodox reform school cum "therapeutic community," in Italy.

With its multiplicity of settings and kaleidoscopic mix of preoccupations-sex, Russia, jet helicopters, seismic upheaval, boarding schools, Middle Earth, skinheads, home improvement, suicide, skateboarding, Sovietology, public transportation, massage, Christian fundamentalism, dogs, Texas, global thermonuclear war, truth, evil, masturbation, hope, Bethlehem, CT, eventual salvation (abridged list)-Oh the Glory of It All is memoir as bildungsroman as explosion. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Probably not worth it.
I read a review of this book and ran out to buy it. It started off somewhat funny but, about halfway through, I found myself struggling with it. The characters here are just too far-fetched. No mother is as crazy as the author's. No stepmother is as wicked as his either. They are not believable. Th ebook drags as he goes from one reform school to another and I found myself caring less and less for the author. I read in the NYTimes that he is some rich kid with a fancy apartment in Soho and a trust fund. As I thouught about it, this is a story about a rich kid who has parents who divorced and a stepmother he doesn't like. Big deal. In the hundreds of pages, there is no sense that he takes ownership for his mistakes, grows, etc. It just keeps going... He needs a good shrink and a better editor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Addictive, honest & thrilling to read
I started reading the excerpt in The New Yorker and am instantly buying this book.I cannot stop reading it-- The portrait of the author and his parents is un-putdownable...
This is a big story; the themes aremythological -- the detailsdiverting and devastating.Wilsey is on a wild ride with his mother that takes him to the Vatican, the Kremlin and a place in world class literature.

Are the rich really different than you and me?You're darn right they are according to Sean Wilsey in the juiciest totally tell-all in many a moon.According to the author, his stepmother, Dade Wilsey, currently a doyenne of San Francisco society, needed no coat hangers to outdo Joan Crawford as the mother-in-law from you know where. Further, while his stepmother provides plenty of fuel for flame, his mother, Pat,is almost certifiable.

In the beginning it was good, we hear, "We were happy. And we were always excessive. So in the beginning we were happy to excess."For them, excess might be defined as his Dad supplying a jet helicopter to drop Wilsey of at the video arcade or his mother tossing lavish bashes in their luxurious home.

Then, when he was 9 his father divorced his mother to marry her friend, Dade, who was 15 years Pat's junior. Pat didn't take this at all well, once suggesting to Wilsey that they commit suicide together. .When that didn't happen she formed an international group of children to bring about world peace and hopped around the globe with Wilsey in tow to do meetings with Sadat and the Pope. After all, as a former Neiman-Marcus model and society columnist, she does have a flare.

As for stepmother, Dade, who brought two sons into the fold, Wilsey remembers a Christmas when she happily undid little boxes under the tree which held $200,000 brooches. She showed her appreciating by giving her husband a kiss and pinning them to her bathrobe. One could go on and on about her luxe lifestyle, but Wilsey puts it best: "If you want a sense of her values, rent the movies "Gaslight" and "Sweet Smell of Success."The scheming lead in "Gaslight" who sweet-talks a wealthy heiress into marrying him and then drives her mad with drink and double-talk, is her."

How is Dade taking all of this?We read that she's threatening to sue.Regardingthe overdoses of jewelry, well, she's quoted as sayingeveryone gave her jewelry - her husband, her exhusband, and her father.

As for Pat?You can't keep a gal from Oklahoma down. When last heard from she was planning a party to celebrate the publication of her son's book.

"Lives of the Rich and Famous" couldn't hold a candle to these folks, and Scott Brick reads their story with grace, gusto, and wry humor.Bet he had a blast doing it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun, good humored tale of a world that doesn't seem real
I know some folks in SF might take offense to the supposed skewering they recieve in this book, but I had a hell of a time reading it.The world described doesn't seem real, and the humor and harsh light falls fairly equally among the "characters" including Wilsey himself. It's one of those stories that is so strange it would never work as "fiction." Totally over the top. ... Read more

Heneman and Judge's book is based on a comprehensive staffing model. The model has been revised somewhat in this edition to reflect the growing importance of staffing strategy and to incorporate retention management into the staffing domain.Components of the model includestaffing models and strategy, staffing support systems (legal compliance, planning, job analysis), core staffing systems (recruitment, selection, employment), and staffing system and retention management. Up-to-date research and business practices are the trademarks of this market leading text.In-depth applications (cases and exercises) at the end of chapters provide students with skill-building and practice in key staffing activities and decision-making. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An in-depth exploration of the Staffing function
I personally loved this book. Its content is enriched with a wealth of professional and practical theory about corporate staffing strategies and systems. The Staffing Organizations Model that shapes the structure of this text is considered a profound, intergrated, and coherent framework for the dynamic realm of staffing. The model's flow is logical, commencing from legal compliance and job analysis and concluding with employee retention management. The book helped me develop a sound conceptual map of what Staffing is, what it includes, and how its sub-systems interrelate. I recommend this book to all people who are interested or work in the Staffing field.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Solid Human Resources Recruitment and Staffing Guide
As a human resources professional and a graduate student at Troy State University, I found this text to be very insightful in all aspects of researching, designing, planning, and implementing various internal and external staffing strategies, policies, procedures, and practices. This text is definitely an invaluable reference book that should be a part of any human resources professional's library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful guidance for the HR practitioner
This book offers solid insight into the complexities of organizational staffing. While other reviewers have commented that merit pay and job evaluation have little place in today's business world, my company uses these tools very successfully. The authors offer theoretical support for these concepts, but do not offer sufficient "real world" examples to provide guidance for those who have no prior experience in staffing. The academic approach that the book takes in dealing with these issues is to be expected from a textbook, but additional examples, possibly case studies, would be valuable for those who do not have the benefit of a course instructor.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive examination of staffing
I use this textbook to teach an undergraduate class in Human Resources. I find that it provides a thorough discussion of the issues that organizations encounter during initial staffing and ongoing efforts.

As expected, it is oriented toward a model that best fits with a very large company. However, I find it is easy to explain the concepts in terms of how to use them with smaller organizations. The section on job analysis offers a nice approach to looking at rewards and motivation.

The sections on internal and external recruitment tend to be a bit longer than necessary and sometimes redundant. The same applies to the internal and external selection chapters. Both do contain a wealth of information.

I found the applications at the end of each chapter very useful in helping students apply what they learn. However, I wish there was more discussion of performance appraisals as selection tools. Otherwise I find the text to be versatile

1-0 out of 5 stars Recall Time!!!
This book suggests that some "right" and "wrong" solutions to pay design exist. It proposes that how pay is designed will help an organization staff itself. All good so far. But then the book needs to produce some "how to" ways to get from where the organization is to where it is supposed to be. I guess this stuff must be acceptable for students at Ohio State but is doesn't was for an executive in a manufacturing company in Nebraska.

In our company, "merit pay" has been a disaster. It causes individual employees to go their own way and not help each other. "Job evaluation" has also been a disaster. We once had a personnel department that spent all of its time putting points on jobs and argueing about which job is more important than another. I have talked to many executives and they come to the same conclusions. So, I bought a book about pay to see what I should do.

I can't imaging someone really writes in a new book and says that merit pay and job evaluation have any place in a company at all. I am a practical business person. I probably could not get a job as a professor at Ohio State. But do I think anybody who believes what this book says could run a manufacturing company where it is tough to get production out, manage quality, keep people motivated, and satisfy customers????? ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent study guide
I passed the SPHR examination in June 2004, after only a month and a half of preparation (besides years and years of experience) and credit the study guide with making it possible for me to acheive that result.

Anne Bogardus' book is not intended to be nor does it pretend to be a complete reference book for the entire body of HR knowledge. It is an excellent study guide and it provides references for the student to use for additional study in each of the six functional areas, should the results of the study guide's exams (three overall assessments plus one exam for each functional area) indicate that more work is needed before taking the certification exam.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very resourceful book
I took the SPHR exam in June 2004 and passed, with the help of this book most definitely. In order to pass the exam, I highly recommend using numerous resources, because HRCI uses different terms that may not be found in any one book/resource. I used this book as a primer, and also used the SHRM Learning System, along with HR Management by Mathis, and began studying 6 months prior to the test date. This is a valuable book, and the test questions were helpful, but don't think that this book is the one and only resource that will help you pass the exam, because it won't suffice on its own. Another helpful hint: the practice questions in this book (and the practice questions in the SHRM Learning System) are MUCH easier than most of the questions on the exam, so be prepared!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Useful Resource!!!!
I was fortunate to be one of the pilot readers of this book. I found it very interesting and informative. I think that the PHR/SPHR: Professional in Human Resources Certification Study Guide is the book for which many of those preparing for the PHR/SPHR Certification Exam have been waiting! This study guide is a welcome addition to the materials already available. It is a clear and concise review of the Body of Knowledge. At first reading, it is quite apparent that Ms. Bogardus not only understands the material, but also presents it in such a manner that it is easy to comprehend the application of the terms, theories and procedures. The study guide includes cross-referencing, indicating where additional information and clarification may be found, and the self-assessment questions help the learner review the materials. In addition, excellent examples are presented, and the "Real Life Scenarios" assist even the seasoned professional in confirming his/her grasp of the application of the information. In my opinion, I believe you will find this Study Guide to be very beneficial in your preparation for the PHR/SPHR Certification Exam. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, and brutally honest
I am a liccensed CA Real Estate Broker. I ordered the book after I had read a positive review about the book from newspaper real estate columnist/investor/attorney, Robert Bruss. Bruss has never steered me wrong, and I highly respect his opinions.
This book is the MOST straightforward, no BS, book I have read yet about any aspect of the business. I tip my hat to the author, who himself is a real estate columnist, for digging up the information... The truths are universal in this business (which is scary/weird), but I feel that anyone who is starting out in this business MUST read this book so you know what to expect, as I cannot think of any other business that chews up and spits out people so quickly. I imagine some will buy it looking for a way to riches, which this book is NOT about. It is about understanding how the business really works and what to expect, thereby giving one an edge against any disappointment and discouragement a "green" agent will surely feel in the first 18 months of this business. The dropout rate is high, and I think the author offers much encouragement. There has been so much stuff written about selling real estate, and all the "pump up" stuff to keep one motivated, but this book is not about that at all. This book would make an excellent gift to anyone who just passed their Real Estate test and is willing to take the plunge into a business where, quite frankly, every day that you wake up, you are seeking work! After reading it, you won't feel so distraught at the bumpy road which lies ahead.
I'm sure even seasoned vets of the business would appreciate it, and may find themselves chuckling to themselves as they are reminded of the many hard lessons that were learned -and there will be many- as the book points out, or perhaps I should say, the book says "Look Out!"
I read it in one evening, as it entertains the reader as well. Well done, Mr. Cook, and thank you for approaching a subject that I think few have touched upon. Your organization of the subject matter seems well thought out.
The one underlying theme which he displays in various interviews with Realtors is one must certainly rely on hard work, rather than luck (we all know the stories about stepping out for a $4.95 sandwich, only to lose a $20,000 commission to the one agent who answered the phone), to make it. Plus, thank you for mentioning that this is a misunderstood profession, in the eyes of the public, and calling upon all agents to act professionally, and putting the client's needs before our own.
Buy it, read it, and good luck to all the new agents out there. Office managers: make this required reading for new agents and you'll save yourself a lot of hand holdiing...

5-0 out of 5 stars Would recommend this book to a starting out agent
This is a great book. It gives you a bunch of information you would otherwise not find out until after your first year in the business. It gives you a bunch of associations to be aware of that you can join, things you can do to promote your business. I finished it in one sitting, and am planning to read it again. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone in their first year of real estate. Will save you a lot of time on doing things that don't matter. Focus on results.

5-0 out of 5 stars The only one
This is the first book you should read if considering entering into real estate. Some of the personal stories are scarey yet true, but are important to face before entering a new career.
A lot of other books are "rah, rah, you can do it" hype. This is one book that speaks about the sucesses and failures from a personal perspective. I have now read it twice once for pleasure and once to take notes! This book really does speak of the things your broker will never tell you.

4-0 out of 5 stars good book
must have book for new agents. I would recommend this book and also "The idiot's guide to Success as a real estate agent" by Marilyn Sullivan which is another super book for new agents.

2-0 out of 5 stars You have heard it all before!!
This book is attractive due to the title, however, it was a great disappointment. Everything in the book are things that a typical broker would tell you. All of the examples and advice are very general, except for one or two good points. What I found particularly interesting is the author's take on "fair housing" issues. The author, who is obviously not a minority, gives the advice that "one should walk away" if someone made a comment regarding letting a "minority" move into a property you are selling. That is true..However, what if you as the Real Estate Agent (and not the client) happens to be Black (or Hispanic or Jewish)?<-THIS IS HOW IT IS IN THE BOOK
There are more ways to view an issue. Maybe he should have consulted an agent that happens to belong to the Black (or Hispanic or Jewish) population for assistance with this topic. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars The Long Way Book
I was very disappointed in this book because I looked forward to my finance class in college. But this book was poorly put together - one short paragraph would talk about carry forward and back but nothing was elaborated on the subject - it would just go right into the equation. I heavily depended on the professor's lecture and not once referred to the book when studying for the exam. 5-0 out of 5 stars Change in perspective - Merle Riepe, PhD, SilverStone Group
As a self-admitted antagonist of emotional intelligence, I have always thought EI was a fad concept that would quickly pass. Because of this book, that has changed. The EI QuickBook brings a new, fresh perspective to the field...and does it swiftly! The stories are rich and effective and skillfully intertwined among theoretical and practical research on EI. If you read only one book on Emotional Intelligence...this is it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Analyzing Emotional Intelligence
We all know a lot of people who have let emotions rule their lives to their great detriment. These people leave their husbands and wives to marry another just like the one they left behind. They go through life with no idea of what happened to make their life so bad.

Emotional Intelligence, as distinct from pure intelligence is something that sorta like the judge's ruling on pornography, "I can't define it, but I know it when I see it."

This book describes EQ, what it is, how it works, what you can do to increase yours. It largely consists of stories, the results of the authors observations I suspect, that show where EQ (either high or low) has made a difference in a persons life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Crucial
Emotional intelligence is such a crucial concept to understand--yet so many of us are unaware of it. The authors do a magnificient job of explaining the incredible power of emotional intelligence and how to apply it to achieve your ultimate goals. This book was a great help to me and is an awesome success tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Book of Choice
While the concept of emotional intelligence has gained popularity in recent years, there has been a void of hands-on information suitable for audiences beyond the research community. The Emotional Intelligence Quick Book is the perfect solution:easy to digest, entertaining, and informative with plenty of take home value. This book has goodness of fit for both the business audience and the mass market of readers who seek to learn more about themselves and how they can improve their lives through an understanding of EQ.I particularly like the free assessment that comes with the book.I commend Bradberry and Greaves for this practical, groundbreaking book and will strongly recommend it to others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous read
This is the most thought-provoking book I've read in a long time. Without being simplistic, it introduced me to so many interesting things I could use to my benefit. Being intellectually smart is surely a strong advantage in our society, but it doesn't say nearly as much as your control and awareness over your own emotions. Have you ever wondered why you have emotions, how your brain works to process them, and how you can use them to your own advantage? I've never read a book that so clearly explains how it all works and what to do with it. ... Read more

Rather than ranting and raving about the contents of this book, let me just say this: get it, read it, you'll love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Helpful Summary of Dr. Maxwell's Leadership Concepts
I was torn in deciding how to grade this book. Clearly, anyone who has already enjoyed most of Dr. Maxwell's outstanding leadership books would find this book to be a valuable, inexpensive and highly portable reminder of those many lessons. For that person, the book is clearly a five star value! Carry it around and draw sustenance from it!! My rating above reflects this perspective, since there are lots of people who do know his work well. When you face a leadership challenge, pull this book out to refocus you and your energies in the right direction!

What about the person who's new to leadership? I would have to grade the book much lower, probably a 2 or 3. Somewhere in the middle of the book (probably between chapters 5-7), most people new to leadership would lose the thread. It's just a little too condensed. In addition, I just didn't think that several of the examples worked for the point they attempted to make. For instance, Dr. Maxwell could have found more meaningful examples for me than Princess Diana and Roberto Goizueta if I were a new leader. I would nominate instead Barbara Bush for her caring and Frances Hesselbein for preparing successors.

Here are the book's structure and key examples for its 108 jam-packed pages:

Part I: The Development of a Leader

1. Why Should I Grow as a Leader? The McDonald brothers versus Ray Kroc in developing McDonalds.

2. How Can I Grow as a Leader? Teddy Roosevelt

Part II: The Traits of a Leader

3. How Can I Become Disciplined? Jerry Rice

4. How Should I Prioritize My Life? Paul Tsongas

5. How Do I Develop Trust? Billy Graham

6. How Can I Effectively Cast Vision? Walt Disney

Part III: The Impact of Leader

7. Why Is Influence Important? Princess Diana

8. How Does Influence Work? Robert Dilenschneider

9. How Can I Extend My Influence? His father

10. How Can I Make My Leadership Last? Roberto Goizueta

Finally, what's the best part of the book? For me, it was the repetition of the Law of the Lid: Your ability to accomplish things is circumscribed until you can energize others in the same purpose. There's a nice set of graphic displays to make this point.

As a technical note, some of the information in the examples seemed dated. I don't believe that Mr. Dilenschneider has been head of Hill & Knowlton for many years . . . yet that's the way he is described. Roberto Goizueta's hand-picked successor at Coca-Cola, Douglas Ivester, did not work out (although he is described as a great success here) and had to be replaced. Paul Tsongas later reentered politics to run for president rather than smelling the roses with his family (even though he had had a recurrence of the cancer that soon killed him). It's almost as though these examples were all written a number of years ago, and not revisited.

Draw inspiration from your vision of serving others . . . and get busy!

5-0 out of 5 stars review of Leadership From The Inside Out
This book is a classic. It takes readers on the reflective journey that Cashman himself has travelled through his years of coaching national and international leaders. Cashman takes a long-needed fresh perspective on the essence of leadership, parting ways with those who have viewed leadership as a collection of "techniques." He is among the first to gleen that the key to effective leadership is inherent in the leader him or her self. As he points out in this great book, effective leaders are those who come to understand that who they are, and what they value will drive how they uniquely add value. Cashman's definition of leadership is a fascinating one. He posits that "leadership is authentic self expression that adds value." Read the book and you will surely agree!! It's a must read for those grappling with the concept of executive excellence.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book!
Kevin Cashman, founder and CEO of LeaderSource, an executive coaching firm based in Minneapolis, MN has chronicled his dynamic training perspectives Pathways to Mastery (1998). With a prestigious client list to his credit, Kevin's unique efforts are potent due to their comprehensive focus on cultivating the core of being and potential, the inner self, versus simply developing extraneous skill sets and behavior modifications. As rightly stated on the jacket cover, "..most books on leadership see leadership as only as something we do rather than as an expression of who we are... we learn what to do instead of how to be. This book is different-it gives you self-expression that creates value." Knowing Kevin as I do, informally but over time, I've had occasion to casually chat about spiritual philosophies that we both cherish. I truly believe he has a marvelous gift, the ability to convey these oft-elusive principles in a manner both understandable and practically applicable. If there were one book that hits the nail of self-development and leadership on the head, I'd say this is it

5-0 out of 5 stars A Valuable Personal Resource
Leadership from the Inside Out is a wonderful book about becoming a better leader, not only of an organization but of one's own life.

Cashman covers all the bases, from Being - the innermost core of who we are - to Action, which he talks about as "leading as a whole person." He offers expert guidance, based on more than two decades as a coach to leaders worldwide, on aligning with our core purpose, authentic self-expression, adapting (and giving direction) to change, creating balance in our lives, and building synergistic relationships.

The book is packed with stimulating quotes, questions to foster self-understanding, and meaningful exercises for growth. All this in a well-designed format for easy reading. Highly recommended! ... Read more

Book Description

This highly successful undergraduate corporate finance text is recognized for its tradition as the best corporate finance textbook at teaching finance. Block and Hirt's approach focuses on pedagogy and how students learn. With the Ninth edition, the authors' careful writing style and step-by-step explanations make the text easy to understand. They also have presented a strong real world emphasis throughout this new edition. Not only will students find real-world emphasis in text examples using "hot" companies recently mentioned in the business press, but there are also Finance-In-Action boxed readings that give an in-depth look at real business decisions, and consistent placement of real company logos in the text's margins. The Ninth edition continues to present a simple and understandable story of finance for students. All of these features come together to present a comprehensive story of finance. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Foundations of Financial Management, 10th Edition
Delivery was terrific. I received the book 6 days after I ordered it and it's brand new!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Finance Starter
This book is very easy to follow and serves as a good reference for more advanced finance classes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good, But Not Excellent
As an undergrad taking his first finance class, I have have found this book to be quite useful. The concepts are explained in simplified, less-complicated ways and make reading each chapter less frustrating than perhaps some others (compared to some of the econ texts that I have had to use!).

It is well-written, concise, and employs some very straightforward, easy-to-follow graphs/diagrams. Also, both the formulas and the exercises at the end of each chapter are quite useful.

The only reason that I did not give it a 5-star rating is because some of the chapters did not use enough "real-world examples" or hypothetical situations in some of the more challenging lessons. This might better aid those students who are new to finance or simply need another angle to better grasp the idea.

5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive, well-written finance textbook
This text is characterized by its extreme simplicty in explanation and presentation of its material. The flow of presenting the contents of each chapter is so sequentially logical that it makes the reader grasp the financial concepts very fast and effectively. Colorful illustrative diagrams are employed extensively to facilitate a high level of understanding and help the learner develop the necessary conceptual links between inter-related topics and items. In addition, it is very comprehensive and intensely supported with a "luggage" of real-life cases .I recommend this excellent text to everyone who needs to take an introductory course in corporate finance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
When it comes to Principles of Finance textbooks, readers have many options from which to choose. I've read dozens of finance textbooks and have yet to find one that tops Block & Hirt. This book is written at a level that anyone can understand and still provides a depth of coverage sufficient for a complete understanding of the discipline at an "undergraduate" level. I particularly enjoy the "balance sheet" approach taken by the authors, which is a direct contrast to many of the competing textbooks. I also appreciate the consideration given to working capital issues; a topic frequently neglected or pushed aside by other textbooks.

The examples are easy to follow, and the authors provide extensive summary and practice problems for readers to test their understanding. I've taught from a number of textbooks and have found this book to be the one that students respond to best. As is true for many disciplines, those who are unwilling to actually "read" the book or put forth any effort will struggle mightly with this material. In such a case, the fault does not lie with this particular book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Wit and Wisdom of Warren Buffett
If you are used to reading public company annual reports, including the (usually) short letters from company presidents, you know how shallow, self-congratulatory and sometimes even misleading these reports can be. On the (extreme) other hand, Warren Buffett's annual letters in his Berkshire Hathaway annual reports represent detailed, on-target, lively and highly readable masterpieces of valuable education, information, and wit. You can read Buffett's annual letters for free at Berkshire Hathaway's website, but it will take you a while, since there are many of them (back to 1977) and they run 20+ pages each. Further, Buffett's various letters weren't intended to serve as serial chapters of a book. Better, you can shell out the cost of Lawrence Cunningham's thematically organized collection (220 pages or so)of Buffett's essays and gain a better appreciation of the numerous important topics that Buffett addresses. These topics include, first and foremost, the critical impact of the quality of corporate governance--Buffett was years ahead of most investors in focusing on this area. Other topics include corporate finance (addressed with a clarity that is both unusual and revealing of Buffett's powers of insight), mergers and acquisitions, accounting (Buffett is the only person I know who can regularly make accounting seem positively interesting), taxes, junk bonds and much more.

Moreover, Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway is nearly unique in its intense commitment to shareholders. The opposite (a commitment to management entrenchment and exorbitant compensation) is the norm with so many companies today that it would be easy to forget how vital shareholder primacy should be. As you read Buffett's essays you will have a model to measure other companies against--which should come in handy the next time you exercise your voting rights as a shareholder.

Life is short. As an investor or a concerned citizen-shareholder, you can learn through your own experiences, of course. There's nothing wrong with that, but the process can be long and expensive. (Depending on one's experiences, it can be very expensive.) Alternately, you can learn via Warren Buffett's lifetime of experiences distilled into a very readable, lively, fascinating collection of his essays. Buy the book-I doubt that you'll regret it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wisdom from the Heartland
This collection of essays by Warren E. Buffett, compiled by Lawrence A. Cunningham, is an excellent introduction to basic investment concepts that have proven successful for the 'Oracle of Omaha' and his loyal following. The reader will want to supplement these papers periodically with more timely updates from the annual letter Buffett writes to the shareholders of Berkshire Hathaway. Buffett's ideas have been widely reported so there are no surprises here. To be sure, Buffett is consistent. He pokes fun at the 'efficient market' school which confuses stock price with stock value. Early on we hear him calling for the expensing of stock options and urging more transparent, segmented financial reporting by large companies. For Buffett mechanically rebalancing portfolios to achieve diversification, back in fashion, may miss the point of holding-on to your best investments for superior returns. Distinguishing between Growth and Value styles of investing is unnecessary and misleading. If you have ever wondered why Berkshire Hathaway does not pay a dividend or why it doesn't split its high stock price, Buffett gives his reasoned explanations. It was Warren Buffett's fundamental school mentor Benjamin Graham who introduced the allegory of Mr. Market and the concept of 'margin of safety' both of which get satisfactory attention here. Most importantly, I think, Buffett reminds us continually that as stock market investors we are buying for the long-term parts of real businesses that produce measurable cash flows as evidence of their intrinsic value. Real businesses that produce real value are run by dedicated, competent leaders who know how to allocate capital. Hanging-on to such deceptively simple principles can get an investor through some very rough market cycles. Reading this collection is a lot like listening to the conversation of an avuncular and very experienced elder who with great patience, common sense, and wit explains what principles have guided his (investment) life. Indeed uncommon sense and integrity are hallmarks of Warren Buffett's writings. Humor too. In what other serious investment study will you get quotations from such luminaries as Woody Allen, Mae West, and Yogi Berra. Buffett loves aphorisms to make his point. I challenge anyone reading this book not to underline or commit to memory some of these gems. For a general introduction to the fundamental school view of investing this collection is required reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Proper Business Practices
"The Essays of Warren Buffett" is a textbook on proper business practice used at Cardozo Law. Yeah, I know you can go to the Berkshire Hathaway website and get all of Buffett's letters to the shareholders (in fact those who truly want to know more can do this). But this book cuts to the chase. It is edited in such a way that the essays are grouped in a logical manner. Thus, you don't have to plow through all the letters ( which at times can be boring and redundant). This makes reading rather convenient and efficient. The parts of the book that are most useful for an individual investor are the sections on "corporate governance" (in which Buffett describes what makes a good CEO and Board) and on "corporate finance and investing" ( in which Buffett argues against the Efficient Market Theory and argues for the Graham-Dodd approach). I found the essays on "accounting and valuation" and "accounting policy and tax matters" a bit tedious (though the section on stock options was rather interesting).

4-0 out of 5 stars Abandoned his own principles in the late 1990s
Buffet is trenchant and smart but abandoned his own principles in the late 90s after run ups of KO, FRE, and other stocks he had the foresight to purchase in the 80s. He attempts to justify this in the 90s with inapt analogies, covering up his own failure to stay true to the principles he learned at the feet of Dodd and Graham. His stockholders paid, and he has since and recently recanted. Only this leaves him in the category of those investors who deserve the platinum medal of investing .... one of the all time greats. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Street Smarts: Market Proven
Street Smarts is the perfect title for this book which was written by two savvy and very successful futures traders. Linda Bradford Raschke and Laurence Connors share some of the best contrarian trading strategies that you will ever lay your eyes on. Of particular interest are the Turtle Soup Plus One and the Turtle Soup strategies that key on false breakouts. These strategies can be applied both intra-day and on a position trading basis and are guaranteed to make you money. Read this book. It is no frills, just excellent trading strategies from two pros.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved the book. Recommend it for serious traders
First of all let me state that you must already have a certain concept of trading and trading terminology to benefit from this book. You must also understand and believe the importance of chart reading as a trader to fully understand what the authors are saying. I believe some of the negativity written about this books is because the readers didnt understand trading concepts as applied to chart reading or disregard chart reading altogether as a valid tool to trading.

With this said, I have to say that the book was beneficial for me as a short term trader. It helped me find patterns that I would've otherwise overlooked before reading this book. Let me also add that the turtle soup and turtle soup plus one does not really apply 100%, per say, to the fast momentum stocks I screen for. However, reading those strategies helped fine tune my entry and exit strategies when I enter a trade. It did so by helping me look for intraday swings and the probabilities of possible price action for next day trading based on what happened to the price at the close. If anything, the book helped me alot because it opened my mind to other trading possibilities and thus form ideas for myself.

Like another reader said, the authors are not mechanical traders. Thus these patterns and strategies should not be taken mechanically. Instead one should trade cautiously using discretionary stops. The book will only teach you about patterns in the market that have a high probable outcome. It's up to the individual to trade the patterns and use protective stops in the case the anticipated move goes wrong.

5-0 out of 5 stars exceptional value -- I wish more books were this good
This has helped my trading immeasurably. It is for swing traders. It is very specific about setups, lots of examples, and lots of setups with explanations and wisdom worth studying. I have probably 50 or 60 books on trading. They all have something to them, but this is one of the top books in my libary and I am using it all the time.

1-0 out of 5 stars Street Smarts
Hmmm, this book is way over priced. The bulk of the concepts are not original ideas, most of the concepts were renamed, creating the illusion that this is some pathway to riches. Read the classic trading books first, and save your money on this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Read between the lines
First of all, I noticed many other reviews written that slagged the book badly. Perhaps they had high expectations in terms of what riches this book could bring them. However, it's clear those readers have the wrong idea.

There is no holy grail or single book that can get you rich. The authors of this book repeatedly say that the strategies are not meant to be mechanical - suggesting that they require flexibility, and the ideas are there to incorporate into your own trading.

I personally would not place much weight on whether this book will make you money or not simply by following the proposed trading 'systems'. Traders are supposed to grow and develop, not copy off some book robotically and become rich.

The book exhibits excellent common sense and simplicity which sometimes traders forget. It will offer you some clarity if you become confused or frustrated with trading. It will also offer the more experienced traders some alternative perspective.

There is probably nothing new in this book that you cannot find elsewhere - but this is probably true for all other trading books.

I do think this book is a bit overpriced - hence 4 stars. On the other hand, I do believe this book is an excellent book in terms of clearing the bunch of mess that is out there with respect to trader education. Simplicity works when applied by the prepared. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars From a Marketing Student
One of my marketing classes is using this book. I have experienced so much PAIN reading this book that I have to give it a 3 star to release my frustration. The chapters are extremely long. The overall concept of the book is good. There are also interesting facts and exhibits, but sometimes the book keeps repeating itself. For example, in Chapter 16 Sales Promotion, the authors talk about consumer franchise-building promotions. The same concept appears later on in the chapter over and over as individual paragraphs. I understand that a lot of the marketing concepts are interrelated, but they can be expressed much more efficiently.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extensive in theory but current and entertaining
This book is theoretical and full of examples of applied theories of advertising. It is presently being used at an AACSB accredited University in the Marketing department and students do enjoy it because of its current content and entertaining format.

Book Description

Ask the successful CEOs of major corporations, entrepreneurs, top salespeople, and pastors what characteristic is most needed for success in leadership positions, and they’ll tell you—it’s the ability to work with people.

Some people are born with great relationship skills, but those who are not can learn to improve them. In Winning with People Maxwell has translated decades of experience into 25 People Principles that anyone can learn.

Maxwell has divided the People Principles in this book according to the questions we must ask ourselves if we want to win with people:

  • Readiness: Are we prepared for relationships?
  • Connection: Are we willing to focus on others?
  • Trust: Can we build mutual trust?
  • Investment: Are we willing to invest in others?
  • Synergy: Can we create a win-win relationship?

Each section contains guiding People Principles. Some are intuitive, such as The Lens Principle: Who We Are Determines How We See Others. Others may go against your instincts, such as The Confrontation Principle: Caring for People Should Precede Confronting People. All of them are 100 percent practical!

Book Description

You're either a Purple Cow or you're not. You're either remarkable or invisible. Make your choice.

What do Starbucks and JetBlue and KrispyKreme and Apple and DutchBoy and Kensington and Zespri and Hard Candy have that you don't? How do they continue to confound critics and achieve spectacular growth, leaving behind former tried-and true brands to gasp their last?

Face it, the checklist of tired 'P's marketers have used for decades to get their product noticed -Pricing, Promotion, Publicity, to name a few-aren't working anymore. There's an exceptionally important 'P' that has to be added to the list. It's Purple Cow.

Cows, after you've seen one, or two, or ten, are boring. A Purple Cow, that would be something. Purple Cow describes something phenomenal, something counterintuitive and exciting and flat out unbelievable. Every day, consumers come face to face with a lot of boring stuff-a lot of brown cows-but you can bet they won't forget a Purple Cow. And it's not a marketing function that you can slap on to your product or service. Purple Cow is inherent. It's built right in, or it's not there. Period.

In Purple Cow, Seth Godin urges you to put a Purple Cow into everything you build, and everything you do, to create something truly noticeable. It's a manifesto for marketers who want to help create products that are worth marketing in the first place.

5-0 out of 5 stars Purple works...I've tried it!
Seth Godin is the most astute marketer of the last 10 years. His latest book, Purple Cow: Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable arrives at just the right time to save the corporate world from ruin.

Hyperbole? Not at all.

As an adjunct professor in a nearby university, I have the privilege of teaching the principles of direct marketing and advertising to the next generation of adcats and DM pros. I base a lot of my class lectures on both personal experience (I've been a direct marketing guru for nearly 15 years) and cutting edge books -- especially those from Seth Godin.

What I like most about Seth Godin (in addition to his witty, insightful style of writing) is that he walks his talk...and doesn't bother to sugar coat what's going on in the world today. He tells it like it is. Or, more accurately, how it should be.

Seth is right: This is the most challenging time in history to be part of the American workforce.

Recent news reports reveal the unemployment rate (at 6.4%) to be the highest in nine years. But the fault doesn't lie with The White House.

Companies these days are actually more interested in playing it safe than in reaching for the stars. Ditto for employees. Remarkable ones aren't getting hired any more. Ones that "fit in" are. (Remarkable ones are routinely shown the door.)

The result is an endless parade of boring products, services, and employees.

And let's not overlook Hollywood. Or the whiney music industry.

Both churn out such bland tripe that they seem bent on drowning the world in a sea of mediocrity. So they have no one to blame but themselves if sales are down.

Enter the Purple Cow.

Seth's message is simple: BE REMARKABLE.

That's it. He calls on companies to be unique and exciting. He calls on employees to be extraordinary, to think big thoughts, to stand out.

Here's a personal example. I put the principles of Seth's book to work in my own advertising agency. When I started PurpleCrayon Direct earlier this year, I aimed for a target audience roughly the same as every other agency...and got literally zero reponse.

So I stepped back, rethought my strategy, and relaunched PurpleCrayon Direct to a completely new and unique audience: Artists. We now work with painters, musicians, actors, writers, sculptors, dancers, poets -- anyone who makes his or her living (or would like to) as an Artist with a capital "A."

And it worked. Big time. The buzz has been amazing.

So I know from observing society (and talking to friends out of work and looking for jobs) that America is in trouble. Forced sameness is crippling the human spirit and destroying hope.

But I know from personal experience what the answer is: BE REMARKABLE.

Thanks to Seth Godin's latest book, I'm more excited than ever before about my professional life. I may still go down in flames with my agency. But at least I'll go down giving it my best shot, being true to myself and to my clients.

I highly recommend Purple Cow: Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable.

It worked for me. It'll work for you, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quite simply you need this book - No question!!
This is without a doubt simply the most awesome book I have ever read on the subject of marketing.

Seth truly gets it and if you buy only one book this year to improve your business this is the one - the book is provoking, challenging and most importantly it will rock your world in the best way be cause if you read and get the message your company, business, job or life will change and change forever.

If you really want to connect with Seth read all his other books and make sure that you get the new ebook that came out on the same day as this book its called 99 Cows and it goes further with the Purple Cow strategy by giving you examples all with links.

But this book is the one and only marketing book the key to what Seth is saying is that business has to be remarkable if it is to cut through the static and make itself heard.

I have one other thing to say BUY THIS BOOK! Then tell everyone you know to get a copy too as the good news always spreads the fastest.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
I feel suckered. Godin must be a clever marketer to have swindled me out of $15. There is nothing in this book that is remarkable. It's common sense: in order to be successful, you need a remarkable product. Well, duh.

1-0 out of 5 stars I think I'm really, really dumb
There is nothing remarkable about Godin's book on being remarkable. All the info in this book is basic business sense. I am an artist.. how can I possibly sign my name to a painting that I do not feel is original or remarkable?? Anyone who starts a business knows the info in this book. If you didn't think your product was better than others why on earth would you have launched it? Unless you are like really, really dumb.

4-0 out of 5 stars You can apply these principles to anything
I read an excerpt from this book in Fast Company and had to buy this and the accompanying "99 Cows". This is a great, eye- opening read because of its simplicity and brilliance. You can apply these principles to many things - I have been telling people about the "purple cow" principle as much as possible. If you want to be remarkable, this book has some good ideas to get you started or get you thinking about ways to apply the principles to your own situation. It's a fun read and very refreshing for a business-related publication. I highly recommend reading this and "99 cows". ... Read more
