In Life or Debt, Johnson spells out exactly how to accomplish these goals in a step-by-step plan that covers

*How to calculate what you really earn, where your money goes, and how you can quickly convert debts to investments
*How to quit "working" for credit card companies and mortgage holders by reducing (or eliminating) your debt now
*Why you're actually paying three times the sale price of the items you buy --and how to stop
*How to work out a simple budget that provides ample money for what you need and cuts out unnecessary expenses
*How to melt away that mountain of debt by prioritizing which debts should be paid off first and at what rate
*The secrets of investing wisely and with minimum risk

5-0 out of 5 stars An exciting approach to the same dull topic
This is my first book review, but I have to take the time to highly recommend this book. I saw Mr. Johnson on a local talk show (Northwest Afternoon here in Seattle) and I was inspired to buy his book. What this book essentially is adovcating is hapiness through financial freedom, which is accomplished by paying off all debts and then turning these debt payments into wealth. The way that Mr. Johnson sets this up is simple and self-supporting, and I personally am setting out on his recommended path. I especially love the section on how to make money off of telemarketers through the use of "do not call" policies. I have already used it on American Express, who kept calling me about credit insurance, and it promptly shut them up (apparently "I'm not interested" doesn't work, but "I will sue you" does). This book will pay for itself and is worth the time for anyone who is tired of working for everyone else.

5-0 out of 5 stars OK, now I get it!
I recommend this book. My finances are a disaster, but candidly, I'm more than fed up with the preachy, condescending literature on how the heck to get out of this pickle. Today, though, is a new day. This work is a very approachable, light, yet immensely insightful roadmap to "the other side." A week after receiving this book, FINALLY, I'm on that path. And to my surprise, I'm actually having fun with it. This book probably contributes little "new" to the subject, and probably told me little that I didn't already know, down deep. However, because of the author's approach, and encouragement, it contributed... and continues to contribute...greatly to my life. Thanks, Mr. Johnson. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars At last, something that works
At last, someone who understands me. For the longest I couldn't understand why I kept spending and spending when I knew good and well I didn't have the money to "shop until I dropped".

Glinda explains the root causes of why many sisters spend, spend spend. I never realized my issues with money stem from how I saw my mother and other family members handle money. I also never tied the connection between my emotions and my shopping habits.

This book is not just another "finance" book - but it speaks directly to your heart. When I read the book I saw myself and felt like someone actually knew what I was going through.

Glinda tells the stories of many women, including herself, who were in overwelming amounts of debt and have now become debt free while applying her principles. Nothing is more uplifting and inspiring than to see someone else in the same situation, or even worse, completely change their life around.

Once you discover the root cause of your spending you can attack it head on and start living a stress free and debt free life. As sisters, we add so much drama to our life when we really don't need to.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decide to do it, then do it!
A holistic and straightforward approach to managing your money, Girl, Get Your Money Straight!, is written in plain English and simple enough for even beginners to comprehend. There are no complicated terms or intimidating jargon, which require a financial planner to interpret, thus easing the reader's way to fall in step towards change. Making amendments to your financial future starts with seven simple, precise steps, you can take now. As stressed in this book, there are no preliminary steps other than to determine in your mind that you want to make a change. Specifically written in a vernacular that would appeal to the African-American woman, Glinda Bridgforth gets down to the nitty gritty when talking about finances. Not a subject easily broached in the Black community it would seem, finance is something that we must get under control in order to prosper. From years of counseling people, Girl, Get You Money Straight contains many scenarios in which readers can relate. Though written several years ago, the information is still pertinent and viable. The scenarios examine the root cause of the behavior and works on changing the root to yield a more prosperous bloom. One example would be the misguided concept of "keeping up with the Jones'" and what a tremendous financial burden that creates on the family when appearances overshadow necessity.
Written several years ago, the information in this book is still pertinent and viable. If you have decided to change your financial life, this book is necessary to help you along your journey. With strength from above and a purposeful goal in mind, you can overcome the bonds of financial dependence and free yourself by starting now.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book speaks the truth!!!
Check the book out at the library and I know you will be back here to buy it!! The book talks directly to black women and what we go through on a daily basis! I wish I had it a fews years ago!!

Finally-- a helpful guide for spending management

I've browsed through so many books about money and never found quite was I was looking for- not stale tips on how to save money (eat out less, clip coupons), not complicated strategies for investing large sums of money (which I don't have). I wanted a book that would be a step-by-step guide with specifics on how to budget and not overspend. I'm glad I finally stumbled upon Money for Life. Smith's book wasn't boring, I actually felt excited to finish it. I haven't started on the envelopes plan yet, but I'm heading home today to finish up setting up my spending accounts. Hopefully, I can keep to the principles of the book and this will work for me.

If you're looking for a book that will walk you through specifically what you can do to manage your spending (so that you'll eventually have some money, and THEN you'll need those investing books), try this book. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of my money
Unless you are looking for a way for your husband to get a new higher paying job or get a pay raise, this book is not for you. I am currently a stay-at-home mom and absolutely love it, but am looking for a way to boost our income a bit. The whole book is about techniques to find your husband a better job or to ask for a raise if he is underpaid. There is one chapter on small jobs for extra income, but that's it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helped me
I thought this was a great book. It was easy to read and It had lots of helpful techniques and resources including websites and phone numbers to make it easier to increase your income. My wife and I used the info and I did get a raise. I would definitely recommend it. I think the people with negative comments haven't actually read the book or if they have maybe they are too jaded by life to have hope...

1-0 out of 5 stars Agree with the concept- male view absent, poorly written...
This book isn't for women that want to help their husbands make more money. This book is written for women who are wishful thinkers.

As much as women may not want to hear it- supporting their husband means being an effective and productive household manager. It means being willing to defer gratification "wants" in favor not only of more income, but a steadily growing net worth which is the ultimate foundation for financial security. Women (and men) who are a bottomless, insatiable pit of "need" for destructive assets like automobiles, which the whole time you're making interest payments on them, are rapidly depreciating will never get ahead with mere "cheerleading" which seems to be where the advice begins and ends in this book.

Sorry, ladies but telling your husbands daily that they're "Smart enough, good enough, and doggone it- they're worth it" isn't a strategy. It's wishful thinking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't let naysayers keep you from reading this book
Obviously a lot of the reviews written here are about people's objections to stay-at-home moms, not the book itself. I am a feminist, and there is nothing wrong with helping yourhusband or partner earn more money (man, if you don't like the idea of staying home with your kids, than don't do it-- don't tell people to earn thier own money and let the husband stay home! Geez! Feeling a little insecure about your own choices?)

This book is really a great idea, and not a new idea either. This is the attitude my grandmother had about her husband's work, and she was much more financially stable than most women today. Obviously you want to have your own work skills, bank account, savings account, in case of death or divorce, but for many women who can not possibly do any more penny-pinching, and who either don't want to use up thier time with thier children running a business from home, or are already doing so and could use more money, this is agreat resource.

Good job to the author! Thank you for writing a book about something that us women have been thinking about.

I think this book is worth its price, even on a stay at home mom budget!

Kids have the right to be cared for by people who love them, and I think any book that helps a women or man stay home with thier own children is a great addition. I am going to recommend to my library that they buy this book.

As for the folks who review this book and criticize moms at home, why are you reading tis book in the first place? Seems thou dost protest too much.............

1-0 out of 5 stars June Cleaver Wanna Be
If this lady is so successful at getting hubby making money,
why is she marketing this? Why not help all us poor, unhappy, overworked women to save our children from the abuse of daycare by offering this wonderful advice for free?
Perhaps that mini van isn't in the driveway of her McMansion yet.
Or maybe, being June Cleaver/Donna Reed wore thin and she needed to find something to do to help her pass the time.
If you want to and can be a SAHM, fine. But don't insult yourself by becoming the "little woman" this book depicts. ... Read more

Book Description

From radio's most trusted advisers, the kind of insider's advice that some experts don't want you to know about -- how to manage your money and build a firm financial foundation that will withstand the inevitable surprises life throws your way.

With their long-running #1 rated personal finance radio show, Ken and Daria Dolan are America's "First Family of Finance." Armed with more than forty years of experience, they have helped tens of thousands of people plan for the future, survive difficult financial times, and cope with unexpected life challenges and emergencies. In Don't Mess with My Money, they draw on a lifetime of personal experience, as well as the tips and strategies from their legion of listeners, to write a candid, tell-it-like-it-is lifetime money guide. Why? Because the people they talk to every day need it.

In the wake of 9/11, and in the aftermath of a yearlong recession and a seemingly endless series of admissions of corporate chicanery and deceit, people across America have begged for trustworthy help in righting their finances, and for someone to tell them what the real deal is. In Don't Mess with My Money, the Dolans pull back the veil of secrecy and reveal the loopholes, double-talk, and insider secrets that some Wall Street analysts and banks, insurance companies, car dealers, and financial advisers try to keep hidden. The Dolans explain how to avoid getting ripped off, how to get out of debt, how to organize your finances and safeguard your money from layoffs, illness, retirement, and death. They talk about:

• How to prepare yourself for unemployment, divorce, and the death of a spouse

• The three words you must utter the next time you buy a new car

• How to invest without losing your shirt

• The ins and outs of estate planning and retirement

• What you must know about the biggest investment you'll ever make--your home

As all of us are aware, life is uncertain. We need to prepare for the unexpected, from job layoffs and salary freezes to the death of a loved one. In this practical, no-nonsense guide, the Dolans provide the essential information you need to know to gain control over your financial lives and your future.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding! Highly recommended
This new book by the Dolans will teach you everything you need to know about money from what to do about health insurance if you are laid off to hidden terms on your credit cards and how to buy the right kind of insurance.

No frills. No 1000 pages of frivolous information. No hawking certain insurance products and services. Just plain, good old fashioned advice that really works.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know about money...
As my father's health is beginning to decline, my wife and I recently found ourselves facing the difficult task of talking with my parents about their estate and finances. No other book helped us think about the questions we needed to ask and the way we needed to ask them like "Don't Mess with my Money." Not only did we discover that they needed a new insurance plan, but we also learned about ways to make smarter decisions about our OWN investments. I couldn't believe how many resources were packed into this one book, and would recommend it to readers of any age, no matter what their incomes are.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great overall guide to help get your accounts in order
This is a great overall guide to get your financial house in order. The car chapter is worth the price of the book alone--it helped me save big last weekend when I was renegoiating my lease agreement.

As a new dad, the chapters on handling family finance and insurance will prove invaluable. We often forget to revaluate our financial needs when we get caught up in a new arrival.

A great buy, a great addition to my libarary.

Thanks Ken and Daria, Im going to try to catch your radio show to see what other sound advice you have to share. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, but please update
This book is quite good, even though it's about 4 years old right now, many things are still true. Some companies have turned the corner such as Citigroup, but overall a must for everyone who wants to know about how their spending at certain companies gets put back into or against the GLBT community.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful, Helpful, Well-Written & Entertaining

4-0 out of 5 stars very informative
I thought that this book out of all the ones I've purchased in the past years...had given me the best ideas on how to save money. I'm an older person but I wished I would have had this book 15 years ago....however, I believe that this book has something for everyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Spending the right way was easy with this book
This book was just what I needed. It is easy to read, with user friendly exercises and if you follow most of the advice, you can start really saving some money. If you are serious about trying to figure out how to start a budget and save some money without too much pain, paperwork, or time, this is a great book! My husband and I would recommend it to any couple who are trying to figure out where their money is going.

And as far as one of the reviews I read on this site about the book telling you to borrow from relatives - they didn't read this book and are totally confused on exactly what they read because nowhere do the authors give you that advice. This is a real gem. Read it now and get started on being financially healthy.

1-0 out of 5 stars Was this book serious?
I recieved this book as a gift from a friend of mine (which would apparently be the SpendRight Way because I didn't pay for it myself), however, I cannot seem to fathom the content of it. I assumed that it was a comical book until I read a little further into it. It was then I realized that the author was seriously giving this advice! Aside from blatent grammatical errors, the advice was terrible. The author adivised people to "borrow money from friends and relatives because you don't have to pay them back". I doubt that advice is healthy for any human relationship. Furthermore, the first review of the book was either written by someone who hadn't read it at all or by the author herself, because I cannot imagine this book receiving a good review if anyone actually took their advice. I certainly wouldn't if I wanted to have friends or family who communicated with me afterward. It was a poorly written book both grammatically and in the means of advice, because I would never take the things this book says seriously due to the poor advice within it. There is a difference between using your money wisely and taking advantage of other people for your own benefit. This book shows you how to take advantage of other people to your own benefit, as opposed to making your money the honest way.
It would be the SpendRight way to never spend your money on this book at all!

4-0 out of 5 stars Just married 2003...
A must read for any family who wants to be money conscious! Lisa & Craig Feeley offer several ways to "Spendright". From the kinds of credit cards you should have, saving at the grocery store, to common sense things taught to them by their parents, like using everything to the last drop! Lisa Feeley is an eminent financial person who will show you several ways to save money on vacations, cars, food and financial items. Spendright is written in a simple easy to read style. The book gets anyone who reads it, to hopefully think in terms of saving money. We highly reccomend it for any family. If you want to save money and budget wisely, this book is well worth the $17.95! We have used some of the ideas in the book and plan to continue in 2004.

1-0 out of 5 stars READ THIS FIRST!
I purchased this book with out reading the customer reviews first. That is my fault completely. But don't bother wasting your money. In fact, think of the cost of this book as money you don't have to spend. It's a waste. Completely.

1-0 out of 5 stars No Thanks
This book is "old". It reads like someone wrote it in an hour and offers advice that is not complete or up to date. Good intentions but ... my copy is on its way to the thrift store!

1-0 out of 5 stars Who does this help?
I'm not really sure who this book is supposed to help. It came to me and it's almost as small as a brochure (14 pages of photocopied nothing!). It gives tips that someone completely clueless would even know, i.e. always pay a little something on your credit cards, set money aside, invest in your future, pay off all past due bills. If you had the money to do all of these bullet-pointed things you wouldn't need a book like this to begin with! Is this guy serious? ...On the flip side, along with this worthless "book", I got The Budget Kit by Judy Lawrence. A few dollars more but an extensive look at how to work with your money and budget what you've got with an in-depth workbook and explanation of what it takes to get you back on the road to financial stability!

4-0 out of 5 stars THIS WILL GET YOU ON TO A GOOD START
As much as I spend money, I needed this as a guide to save more. This is simpistic, and easy to follow. So far in the past 3 months that I have followed the advice in this book, I have made tremendous progress in my spending patterns and saving habits. I even put some money in a CD to avoid spending it! For me, that's a miracle.

I suggest that if you want to start basic, this book is an excellent way to start.

1-0 out of 5 stars Making Ends Meet???
I was extremely dissapointed when I received this book! Although the content has good potential, I felt it was overly simplified and just barely skimmed the surface of what it really takes to set up a good budget and stick to it. It did not have the depth that it could have had, to really help me through my financial situation. I would, in no way, recommend this phamplet to anyone who is seriously looking for help thru a book to set up a budget and get out of debt! ... Read more
