5-0 out of 5 stars The best book out there on RSI!
This book is excellent! As a long time RSI sufferer, I found this book to be a great source of information and hope. It is very well written, and it is clear that the authors have an extremely thorough understanding of repetitive strain injuries. The book describes a theory of how RSI develops, and how it can be treated most effectively. I also learned quite a bit from the case studies of six RSI patients, and was heartened by their successful recovery. Most importantly, the authors outline a very practical and understandable treatment approach. I am now following this suggested treatment, and am very optimistic that I will recover from my four-year battle with RSI. If you have a computer-related injury, I recommend that you buy this book now!

5-0 out of 5 stars Important Buy for *ALL* Computer Users
As a computer professional for the last 15 years or so I have come to understand, first hand, the concepts presented in this book. Presented here is a method to repair and prevent damage caused by repetitive strain injuries in the work place that involves no drugs or surgery! This book is a must read for anyone who works with computers on a regular basis, whether they are currently feeling painful symptoms or not. The simple stretching and ergonomic suggestions in the book will help keep the strain injuries away, and the comprehensive diagrams for self administering many of the muscle based massage technics can be quite helpful to those with pain who do not have the time for regular Physical Therapy visits for similar or even less effective treatments. Once the pain is gone, the previous ergonomic and stretching methods can be used to help keep one relatively pain free depending. of course on one's future vigilance. As someone who relies solidly on my hands and ability to perform detailed work each day for my profession and my hobbies, this book is a godsend. When my own painful symptoms began appearing, my fears of surgery and possible loss of mobility were left behind by this new method to resolve problems that many computer users face. To go one step even further, It's Not Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is written in language that does not require a medical degree to understand and gain benefit from it. Did I mention that no surgery is involved? :) All in all an excellent resource.

4-0 out of 5 stars best book I've seen, in years of lookin'
This is a terrific book. I've been an RSI sufferer for eight years and it's the best I ever read. Damany & Bellis stay humble about the things they don't know.

They provide just enough structural and physiological information to help the reader anchor themselves in a real understanding what's going on. A lot of the books spew out a lot of muscle names and nerve names kind as a way of groping for credibility, without really making sure that information is something the person can use.

They're open to the ambiguity, and lay out alternative explanations, for some of the big imponderables in RSI -- such as why some people get injured others don't, or why some recover and others don't.

They have pretty darn good descriptions of the nerve glides and stretches and so forth that a person needs to do. One of my great frustrations with even skilled physical therapists is that they describe a stretch and then walk away, without giving the patient good instructions that that they can follow when they get home.

The most important thing of all is this: the book seems honest and clearheaded and genuine, and it's clear that they're really interested in helping to move the ball forward in understanding RSI.

5-0 out of 5 stars best book out there
I've just finished reading It's Not Carpal Tunnel Syndrome!, and I'd like to congratulate you on an immensely readable, reasonable, and informative book.

I've been coping with computer-related repetitive strain injury for over ten years, with this progression of diagnoses: bilateral carpal tunnel syndrome, epicondylitis, and thoracic outlet syndrome. I've also recently been diagnosed with Dupuytren's contracture (more in the right hand than the left). Only voice-recognition software has allowed me to continue in my work as editor and writer.

I helped start an RSI discussion group at the university where I work some years ago, though it's no longer active. It was quite a mix of people, both faculty and staff, all bright people, and all pretty seriously affected by RSI. Hands down, we felt Pascarelli and Quilter's book Repetitive Strain Injury: A Computer User's Guide was the best source of information we had. How I wish we'd also had It's Not Carpal Tunnel Syndrome! back then, too. It's the first book I recommend now.

Again, thank you so much for your fine book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Detailed Reality About the Overall Problem
I really enjoyed the voice and details of this book. It conveyed a much better understanding of the underlying problems to all the pain I was going through, repeatedly. Simply understanding the fact that I have to maintain my body, do things to help it repair itself from the damage I do to it on an everyday basis really helped me figure out what I had to do to be pain free.

This book offers very clear, respectful advise and case studies. It shows that the symptoms can vary according to the severity of the cause and how people's bodies are built. No Instant Cure, no promises, but it does give a very useful, general approach to how to understand and manage the overall problems. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This Style Guide Has Everything!
This book tells you how to do everything! It can be used by both students and professionals. This book has everything from how to properly use a comma to writing bibliographies; from how to use photographs in presentations and documents to writing resumes. This guide gives you hints on how to manage meetings effectively. I use this book at both work and home. People come to me to borrow this fantasic book constantly. I have the CD installed on my computer and love using the program - it is very user-friendly. I don't think any student or office should be without this wonderful tool.

1-0 out of 5 stars Covey's CD doesn't work, neither does customer service!
I recently purchased the Covey Style Guide with CD Rom. The CD rom, after installation, wouldn't come up. I phoned Covey's 800 number and got bounced around to several people who said I had to go online for help, or else give my credit card up front for a minimum of $20 service charge. Their online system supposedly has a technician online, but I kept getting the message "Sorry, sometimes the system cuts of the reply. Please resend."

This is was too weird for me. This is not my idea of customer service!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to improve technical writing skills!
This book was great for improving my technical writing skills. I used this book as a required textbook for a masters degree program and felt it was great for my first class.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most helpful style guide ever!
There are a number of useful style guides for technical and business writers on the market; this is my most favorite!

It is easy to understand, has great examples, covers all imaginable aspects of written communication, and - the best - it comes with exhaustive coverage on a CD.

Finally, it is definitely the best bank for your buck!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great desktop reference for Technical Writers
This is a great reference tool for anyone starting out in the technical communications field! This book is very user friendly. It's apparent once you start flipping through the pages. All the topics, such as, "Editing and Proofreading," "Page Layout," and "Word Problems," are organized in alphabetical order and printed on the outside edge of the page's header in large easy-to-read font. I also appreciate the way each topic has the keypoints summarized at the beginning with numbers that corresponds to an in-depth discussion of the keypoints. The enclosed CD-ROM was also a great addition to this book. This book is a worthwhile investment! ... Read more

Book Description

What is facilitation? Ironically, it's a difficult word that means "to make easy." When applied to businesses and organizations, facilitation means helping people work together in groups and teams to achieve their goals.

But wait, you're probably thinking there's nothing easy about that--and until now you've been right. Most existing texts on facilitation (and there are lots of them) are theoretical, have too many complicated models, and lead to unnecessary confusion. The Facilitator's Fieldbook was written to break through the theory, clear up the confusion--and make facilitation itself easy.

Comprehensive in scope, yet extremely practical and to the point, The Fieldbook is perfect for both novice and experienced facilitators. Those new to the art of facilitation will find clear guidance on basic how-to information. More experienced facilitators will discover advanced methods for use in more challenging facilitation situations and simple models for facilitating both large and small groups.

Best of all, The Facilitator's Fieldbook contains a wealth of resources such as checklists, samples, templates, guidelines, and step-by-step procedures. It will enable you to perform all the skills of facilitation, including: * establishing ground rules for groups * planing meetings and agendas * building the group database * brainstorming * decision making * conflict resolution, and more. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Facilitation course members love this book
I teach a master's level course in facilitation and team dynamics. Justice and Jamieson is by far the most useful and popular book in that course. Students use it heavily in designing facilitation processes during the course, and I hear them recommending to others that they KEEP their J&J handy because they'll continue to use it. Especially helpful: the quick overviews of group dynamics, overt/covert issues, team member roles, leadership processes. It helps to provide this background knowledge for the students. The options and explanations list many more choices and rationales than usually seen in a book like this. Examples: multiple approaches to brainstorming, agenda development, session evaluation, interventions to manage conflict, etc. J&J's second edition (if there is one) could be a little slicker, but you wouldn't have to change much content except perhaps to have an added section on virtual facilitation. Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars covers it all
Most comprehensive book on the topic I've seen. Very practical info. I interned with a small consulting firm that did excellent facilitation work, but their only training strategy for facilitation was "watch what I do and then do it" -- no real framework for a beginner. I wish I had known about this book; it put it all into logical structure and process, and allowed me to make sense of what I had seen a few times as a beginner. I've used its many practical checklists to become a respected facilitator, and still improving thanks to this manual.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
This books is a "manual" on facilitation that prepares you very quickly. Great examples, good checklists, good index - well worth the price. My only quibble is a small one: charge a few dollars more and improve the paper and printing quality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best "how to" book on facilitation with groups and teams.
This book is an encyclopedia of practical guides and scripts for all levels of facilitators. I was able to immediately implement the carefully scripted process techniques in my University teaching and consulting work with other organizations. A real must for practitioners who are serious about making groups work! ... Read more

Book Description

Breaking down complex philosophical issues into a step-by-step self-help guide, the founder of the Institute for Global Ethics shows us how to grapple with everyday issues and problems: Should I take my family on a much-needed vacation or save money for my children's education? Should we protect the endangered owl or maintain jobs for loggers? This is a unique, anecdote-rich, and articulate program that teaches us to think for ourselves rather than supplying us with easy, definitive answers. Offering concrete guidelines and principles, Kidder enables us to resolve ethical dilemmas and to make the tough choice between what are usually two "right" values. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Framing the question frames the answer
Kidder's book essentially boils down any tough choice down to basic conflicts, a struggle for competing "rights" or things we value. We value loyalty, for example, and we value honesty...what happens if I know my spouse is cheating on our taxes or from their company?

Thought provoking, easily read....strongly recommend.

4-0 out of 5 stars choice and conflict
This is a nice, short book that anybody could read and get something useful out of. To help potential readers, I will clarify a little about the book. In many ways, it is not a book about decision making per se, but rather ethics and decision making. As such the title doesn't quite fit: perhaps it should be called how good people -should- make tough choices. Given that the emphasis of the book was somewhat different than expected, Kidder made a decent book out of the general topic of ethics. Not arcane in any way, chock full of examples and designed to be user-friendly. A great book for "lay persons" who are nonetheless quite familiar with decisions that have ethical implications and need to make them on a regular basis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This is an excellent book and along with Donald V. Paone's "To Be or Not to Be: Reflections of Modern Bioethical Choices" (also available from is must reading if those who confront the problems of living morally in the modern world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written, easy to understand ideas
This book has provided me with a structure through which I can begin to think more openly about ethics. It has surprised me with a number of new ideas, most of which are relevant to all of us. I highly recommend this work to those who care about living a thoughtful life. Ethics this way is not stodgy and limiting, but expansive and exciting.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book on the subject
After reading a variety of books on ethics and ethical decision making, this one stood out for its clarity of thinking and superb examples. A book that makes you think about your life and how you choose when the choice is hardest of all: between right and right. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Models of Change
The book addresses the issue of how to make change effective from a variety of viewpoints, including "war stories," a model of the different levers available to leaders, and an academic framework. I can also see that a workshop that lets one "twiddle the knobs" in Dr. Shapiro's model would be very helpful in understanding the interactions of the different levers for organizational change.

5-0 out of 5 stars A practical must read
Creating Contagious Commitment shows us how to apply tipping point theory to organizational change. It is a practical book filled with information that is straightforward, easy to understand and apply. No wasted words, no fluff. This book is a must read for anyone who wants to implement an organizational change and do it right.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy reading, effe
There are many books on org change theory but very few make understanding and applying the theories simple. Andrea does an exceptional job capturing in plain language this often neglected aspect of business change. Regardless of the change theory embraced, she demonstrates how to get this message to your target audience and build "contagious commitment" for your initiative.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Solid Effort!
Taylor Cox Jr. and Ruby L. Beale offer readings, case studies and structured activities for developing individual and organizational diversity skills. The readings often focus on specific groups, but the underlying ideas can easily be extended to others. By focusing on the economic benefits of diversity management, the authors make a persuasive case that these ideas are strategically relevant, especially for companies that are trying to compete in the global economy. Some of the ideas are complex and take some real study, but they are presented clearly and concisely. The book offers little original research, but that is not the authors' goal. They mean to unite existing research and to put those ideas into action - a task that they perform very well. We at getAbstract recommend this book to human resource professionals, managers who must handle diverse workforces (especially executives who work outside their home country) and anyone struggling with diversity in the workplace. ... Making Work Work is Julie Morgenstern's most important book yet. Through the mastery of brand-new strategies, Morgenstern shows you how small changes in your thinking and behavior will help you achieve the seemingly impossible -- boost your value, increase your job security, and afford you the time to still have a life.

Morgenstern has helped clients of all levels take control of their work lives in every industry: from corporations and nonprofits to government agencies and small businesses; from executives and assistants to educators and salespeople. People rarely look at their jobs from a psychological and practical perspective at the same time, but Julie Morgenstern does. This book mirrors the individual consulting services she provides by showing you how to start with yourself and then tackle the more complex external issues of working relationships and the job. For every obstacle you encounter along the way, Morgenstern diagnoses the source of the problem (is it you or them?), and with insight and warmth, she provides simple grab-and-go strategies. These are small changes anyone can make to improve performance and efficiency at work.

At its core, Making Work Work is about your relationship to your job. With the reliable, methodical process taught in this book, you will:

This is a provocative and life-changing book that will help you boost your clarity, confidence, and performance in any economic climate. With Morgenstern's guidance you can find a way to make work work. ... Read more

Would that all business presentations could be made as succinctly andstylishly as this nifty little 72-page thumbnail guide. It makes its own points, starting with presentation preparation (knowing your audience, location andpurpose; finding, structuring, and writing your material; and using audio-visualaides, and rehearsing), then covering self-preparation (improving yourappearance, body image, and voice, and eliminating tension), delivery (speakingconfidently, and closing effectively), and handling an audience (judging themood, fielding questions, and coping with hostility, should it arise). On everypage, boxed tips, crisp graphics, mini case studies, sample material, and handychecklists make the whole process clear and easy to follow. Granted, if you'relooking for very specific or in-depth guidance, you might find this book toocursory and general in its approach. But, if you're looking for a thumbnailguide to the basics, it'll do just fine.

It's worth mentioning that the book is part of the "Essential Managers" seriesby reference publisher Dorling-Kindersley--a series comprising 20 itty-bittybooks on business and career topics that range from communication, leadership, and decision-making to the management of time, budgets, change, meetings, people, projects, and teams. Combining the talent of the "For Dummies" bookseries for breaking down a lot of information into bite-sized bits and sidebarswith Dorling-Kindersley's signature design style of crisp, classy graphics on agleaming white backdrop, the books don't represent the cutting edge of businessthinking or reflect necessarily any unique individual perspective. Instead, it'sas if someone had collated the best general thinking on these 20 topics, androlled them out into 72 brightly designed and easy-to-read pages--studded alongthe way with boxed tips, color shots of a multiracial cast of "coworkers"animatedly hashing through the workplace issues of the day, and, on the last fewpages of each volume, a self-test of one's skills in the topic at hand. Again, they're not for anyone who's looking for more in-depth or focused help on any ofthe covered subjects, but they're perfect as a quick general-interest reference;and, let's face it, they're so damn cute, and look so smart in a neat littlestack or row, that probably you'll want to buy a whole bunch to give as gifts toyour entire staff or department. --Timothy Murphy ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Do I have to?
I would much rather have someone else give the presentation, to be quite honest. So, I am giving this book to my husband. I thought the information in the book was practical and it enourages preparation. There is a section on how to reduce your fears of speaking in public.

Knowing your audience, dealing with logistics, knowing your location, clarifying objectives, finding material, structuring material, writing a presentation, using audio-visual aids, rehearsing, preparing yourself and enhancing your body image are all good points. The avoiding bad habits section was especially good. I mean, if you stand in front of the baord, who can see it? If you slouch, it looks unprofessional.

It all sounds so complicated...can't we just all head for the beach. ;> But seriously, this is a fun book filled with basic information for those who have to make presentations to keep others informed about business decisions.

3-0 out of 5 stars Things I learned in Architecture School & The Military
This books isn't a bad purchase for the's a low cost, handy reference. It is worth the cover price, but most of what it teaches, I have already learned through attending that High Priced University and by joining the Military (Death by Power Point!) I guess it always helps to have a refresher course, and something to refer to in a tight spot. Design, remembering your audience, and how to speak in front of people...maybe I could have saved the college tuition if I had this book 10 years ago! Enjoy it when you get your copy! ... Read more

Book Description

Now fully updated to reflect the current realities of the public relations field (including the emerging importance of graphic design and the use of the Web), this revision of Newsom and Carrell's practical text covers all aspects of public relations writing. The book offers the practical approach one would expect to find in a trade book, but uses the principles and theories of public relations to give students what they need to write with understanding and purpose. Part One provides the background for all public relations writing tasks by explaining how this kind of writing is unique and by exploring the legal and ethical obligations. Part Two is the writing principle section, which covers both style and techniques. Part Three begins with basic public relations writing assignments that students are likely to be exposed to early in their jobs: letters, e-mail, memos, and eventually reports and proposals, backgrounders and position papers. Part Four covers writing for mass media. Part Five covers the more complex public relations writingincluding media kits, newsletters, brochures, magazines, annual reports, and crisis communication. ... Read more
