3-0 out of 5 stars Common Sense? or merely perceptive?
This book is a decent introduction to body language. It is basic, and really won't shatter any of your preconceptions of how to read body language.

If you consider yourself to be perceptive, or if you have studied other books on body language, you probably will not find anything earth-shattering or new here, but for a newbie, trying to pick up basics, this is a quick intro.

an interesting read

3-0 out of 5 stars Basic
This is a very good book for beginners on how to understand body language ... but the division of the chapters, and some examples make this book very basic.
very easy and fast to read

1-0 out of 5 stars Too basic
My impression was that this tape contained the most basic ideas that author's in this subject matter have ever presented. For eg., "People crossing hands in front of their chest means that they aren't accepting what you are telling them." That is the most typical statement I have ever heard, and this tape is full of them. There is nothing enlightening, nothing that makes you glad that you bought and listened to the tape. I felt it was not good use of time or money. For

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Beginning Book
This is a great beginner's book to body language. It provides clearly-written descriptions and illustrations about how our actions and movements as humans can speak more loudly than our words can. This knowledge can be used to help determine if someone is being honest with you, agrees with you, is interested in purchasing your products, is attracted to you, etc. ... Read more

Book Description

Financial expert and author Suze Orman is a Certified Financial Planner, a Registered Investment Advisor, and a Commodity Trading Advisor with over sixteen years of experience with major Wall Street financial institutions. Her firm, Suze Orman Financial Group, established in 1987, services nearly 1,000 new clients each year. She was cofounder, in 1990, of Consumers for Retirement Independence, a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating the senior community on how to become truly financially independent. From 1983 to 1987, Ms. Orman served as Vice President of Investments for Prudential Bache Securities. During her tenure there she earned the reputation of being one of the nation's experts on tax-deferred insurance investing. From 1980 to 1983, she was an Account Executive specializing in retirement planning at Merrill Lynch.

A regular on the CNN/FN show "Take It Personally," where she makes financial advice fun and accessible, Suze Orman currently appears bimonthly on the nationally syndicated morning show "Fox After Breakfast" as its financial expert. She also writes a financial column that began appearing in the nationally distributed magazine Self in February 1997. Continually sought out by the media for her accurate and unbiased opinion, she is quoted frequently in such publications as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Mirabella, The San Francisco Chronicle, and Consumer's Digest, among others. Ms. Orman also serves as an expert witness in security fraud and insurance cases. She testifies in matters where elderly persons have lost funds through negligent actions of major brokerage/insurance firms.

The author of You've Earned It, Don't Lose It, which has sold over 150,000 copies in hardcover, Ms. Orman appears monthly on QVC in conjunction with that title. The book is currently selling close to 15,000 copies a month on the television shopping network, making it one of the top sellers. Commissioned by America Online to create a web site for its web subsidiary, GNN, Ms. Orman's home page, "The Bag Lady Syndrome," has been featured for over fifteen months and continues to be one of its most popular hits. She is also known as the money coach for iVillage's popular site on AOL called "About Work," where she personally answers the financial questions of thousands of people. Visit Suze on the Web.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical, useful, multidimensional, immediate use
Just finished reading this...and then immediately went into work and changed my 401(k) contribution to the maximum. Also am looking for a money market account and will begin managing my own IRA stuff...now that I feel more comfortable doing it. Plan to lend the book to friends, and called my parents to tell them to get a copy and start getting things in order...such as getting a trust instead of a will, getting LTC insurance, etc. I liked her straightforward writing style; she has a knack for explaining the "mysterious" world of investing and finance in a way you can quickly and easily understand. She makes you feel more confident...that you can indeed manage your money. In today's often confusing world, it was very helpful to hear that you can trust your intuition and you don't have to "fall prey" to financial advisors. Also, from personal experience, I know that her advice about "good brings good" and "respect of money will bring you more money" is true. My husband got in a serious accident a year ago and at the time we were in a bad bad financial position--no emergency funds, high credit card debt, prospects of little or no income. This "kick in the pants" helped me to take control of my money and now a year later our credit cards are paid off, we have 4 months of bills in the bank, and I am maxing out my 401(k). Suze Orman's book came to me just when I was ready for the next step, and I am putting it to good use. I highly recommend!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Financial Serenity
While this author describes 9 steps towards "Financial Freedom," I kept asking myself, "But what about ...?"

For those of who want a great primer into recreating your financial identity, this is an excellent beginning.

Suze Orman started out with a degree in Sociology (And she was attacked in the financial world for having "too much psychobabble").

Two events that compelled her to learn about and to be an expert on money:
1. When her father's store caught on fire, he desperately ran
into the store to grab his cash register. This caused him to
be badly burned. And it taught Suze Orman to learn about
investments, savings and related topics.
2. After college, she was a stock broker for Merrill Lynch.
This is where she learned the difference between what was
being told to the public, and what the truth about money is.

Through these events she discovered her life's work is telling people the truth about money.

Within this book Orman talks a lot about uncovering your money memories, and seeing where those money memories have led you to have the relationship to money that you now have.

She also covers many fundamental topics about retirement and investing in this book. But she does not take readers through the journey of earning a dollar, to growing that dollar into several millions - or to allowing that money to work for you.

I'd suggest that you read these seven books, after reading "Nine Steps to Financial Freedom":
1. "More Wealth Without Risk," by Charles Givens
2. "Financial Self-Defense," by Charles Givens
3. "The Millionaire Next Door," by Thomas J. Stanley, Ph.D., &
William D. Danko, Ph.D.
4. "Simple Abundance," by Sarah Ban Breathnach
5. "Creating Money," by Sanaya Roman & Duane Packer
6. "Girl, Get Your Money Straight!" by Glinda Bridgforth
7. "Open Your Mind to Prosperity," by Catherine Ponder

Where most financial books assume that you have money, and that you are not only ready to allow that money to work harder than you work, they also assume that you will be at peace with this.

Read "Nine Steps to Financial Freedom," to face your past, and to practice, for the sake of practicing to be a peace with your control over money.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful bits
I found this book to be sowewhat educational with a some good ideas here and there. With books like this, I try the philosophy "absorb what is useful". Some things are very helpful and some are just conceit in my opinion. I wouldn't pay too much for it, but every little bit of simple info helps.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book Suze
The 9 Steps to Financial Freedom is OUTSTANDING in presentation and content. Suze is indeed the Queen of personal finance and the most widely read financial author today.

In addition to this great book, I also recommend More Wealth Without Risk and Financial Self Defense by Charles Givens. Two books that gives even more OUTSTANDING advice that you won't find anywhere else.

Great books. Good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite personal finance book
Although Suze has written newer material, 9 Steps is still my favorite personal finance book. I believe it is the best personal finance book bar none.

These fans of Quinn need to get a life. If Quinn is so great, how come her book doesn't sell and those that bought it [myself included] were vastly dissappointed with it.

Book Description

When Rick Pitino became the coach of the Kentucky Wildcats, he took them from NCAA probation to four spectacular Final Four appearances, including the championship in 1996 and an incredible return to the NCAA Finals in 1997. Under Pitino's leadership, the Wildcats garnered a 70 percent winning record. Now the head coach of the Boston Celtics, Pitino has clearly become a master at molding great players and great teams. What's his secret to success?

Pitino's method--and the reason he's both a peerless basketball coach and one of the most sought-after motivational speakers in the country--is built on a strategy of overachievement. He simply doesn't believe in shortcuts.

Success Is a Choice draws on Pitino's 17 years as a college and professional coach. In a friendly, one-on-one style, using anecdotes from his superstar career to drive home his message, Pitino presents a concrete, 10-point program for achieving success in every aspect of life, including:

  • How to make winning seem inevitable
  • How to achieve things that even you don't think are possible
  • How to subordinate your own ego and individual agenda for the common good
  • How to get people to work as a team
  • How to thrive on pressure
  • How to feel better about yourself--and improve the way you relate to others

Pitino's winning techniques appeal to everyone from corporate managers to educators to parents. Based on the same proven methods that have earned him and his teams legendary status, Pitino's plan of attack will help anyone become a winner. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional ideology for motivating yourself and others.
The age old ideology that our success and happiness ultimately depends on what we think, while obviously nothing that we haven't heard before, is masterfully explained by Coach Pitino in this highly motivational book. The book is full of sound principles that can be used in any walk of life. While the underlying theme that success is a choice is simplistic and easily understandable, actually choosing a positive attitude in your everyday life is one of those things that is easier said than done, and the inspirational stories that Pitino tells from his experiences in the book are fuel for anyone's motivational fire and help make choosing and maintaining the positive attitude that is necessary for success an easier choice to make. I would rate this book right up there with the best self-help books of all time like those by Dale Carnegie and Stephen Covey.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some Good Advice but Not Too Deep
This book is a very fast read and Pitino hammers home some key points such as setting realistic short term goals. Also he emphasizes the importance of maintaining focused and keeping a positive attitude. He gives some examples from his coaching experiences. Some stories stand out more than others.

However, many parts of this book seem to repeat itself. Pitino does not distinguish each chapter enough. Somehow Pat Riley's The Winner Within offers better examples that are more special. None the less there is more good than bad and and any sports fan will appreciate Pitino's basic candor.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hogwash!
There is nothing here that hasn't been written elsewhere, and better. But the biggest problem is the titular idea that "success is a choice." Hogwash! If success is a choice, why didn't Mr Pitino "choose" to succeed as coach of the Boston Celtics instead of failing miserably? It's abjectly self-serving to win a college championship and then write a huge pat on your own back congratulating yourself on having "chosen" to win. Where is the book after the Celtics fiasco? In point of fact, most of our successes or failures in life are determined by forces completely out of our control. In the words of the old adage, people like Pitino are born on third base and spend their lives thinking they hit a triple. Worse, such an attitude allows the haves to blame the have-nots for their own plight, instead of recognizing the systemic obstacles standing in the way of universal socio-economic enfranchisement.

4-0 out of 5 stars It is a Choice
Whether you are a basketball fan or not, this is a great book for those who are searching for the leader in themself. Rick Pitino has some very interesting stories of his past that makes this book. It is a well organized outline of how to develop yourself to be a better person. If you are searching, read it... if you are not, look elsewhere.

4-0 out of 5 stars Now everyone can have Pitino as coach!
At first glance, the book "Success is a Choice" seems to be just another informative guide to success. To a degree, this is true, but reading the book in this way does not reveal its true potential: The real power of the book is not as a passive informative piece of literature, but as an active companion which guides and motivates you through your projects.

Putting it simply: "Success is a Choice" is a coach. It is full of motivation talk as well as constructive criticism that Coach Pitino gave to his players in real situations. It also lists and analyzes quite a few Pitino's own mistakes and fumbles, and this gives you the feeling of candid nonpatronizing approach. In short - this book is the next best thing to having Coach Pitino himself by your side, coaching you to success... and the guy sure is a great coach!

The only bad thing I can say about this book, is that it doesn't look like a coaching book at first glance. As stated in the beginning of this review, the book seems to be just another "success guide", and I suspect this prevents many readers to realize its full potential.

Overall, a highly recommended book for anyone who wants to get gain more control over their lives. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely worth reading - it'll make success more enjoyable
I love the way Rich Fettke throws out the old rule book that focuses on "working hard" to succeed. EXTREME SUCCESS gave me a new outlook on how to achieve my goals and enjoy life's journey with a lot less struggle and much more fun! This book is not just about success; it's about developing a great attitude/perspective on life. It's filled with practical, do-able, ideas and inspirations that make it a book I will grab and apply to my life on a regular basis.

Fettke's use of the term "extreme" makes perfect sense. He shares wild stories from his extreme sports background as metaphors (like bungee jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge and skydiving form 14,000 feet) that lead into many great ideas he's learned from his clients on how to take your life to the highest level - to the "extreme" if you will.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gain Without Pain
This warmly and clearly written book is an excellent guide to personal success. It contains self management skills that are transferable to any area of life. Calling on his personal experiences, his training and experience as a Life Coach, and his participation in extreme sports, Rich Fettke lights the way toward success with less struggle. He uses metaphor, powerful questions, inspirational quotes, and strategic steps to motivate and educate. The book is full of valuable tools and strategies, such as "Creating your own luck", "Working with a partner", "Applying your strengths to your weak areas", "Dancing with your fear", and "Staying in the challenge Zone." As a Life Coach, I can highly recommend EXTREME SUCCESS, sure to help each reader create a life of success, joy, and balance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Success
As a professional personal coach I found Rich Fettke's "Extreme Success" an excellent resource for tips and techniques for use with my clients (not to mention myself!). My favorite is his idea of dealing wtih fears that inhibit us from doing the things we need to do to move forward in our lives. Called "dancing with your protector," it's an imaginative and powerful way to reframe the obstacles in our lives in a way that can actually propel us forward with a greater liklihood of success.

I host a radio program in Seattle called "The Working Life!(tm)" and have interviewed Rich about his book. I found him to be engaging and sincerely interested in helping all of us to make the most of what we've been given in this life. If we can do that--really do that--then our success will not only be extreme, but sweet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Your Perscription for Struggle Free Success
Far too many people imply that success has to be a struggle.
Rich accesses that success can be fun and easy. It's all
about knowing what you want, putting fear aside, and
just going for it!

With a warm and friendly style, Rich shares strategies on
how to conquer fear, craft a vision of your success, create
balance, build momentum, and take action to achieve your dreams!
Grab a pen, because he's packed lots of great coaching
tools right in the book.

My favorite "aha's" came from the balance wheel and visiting
your future self. Get it and fasten your seat belt,
because it will put you on the fast track to success!

5-0 out of 5 stars How far can you get by going it alone?
Many small business people and managers I work with hold on so tightly to the notion that self-reliance and hard work is what allowed them to achieve their success. That may be true to some extent. It's also a big reason why they sought out a professional personal coach. Somehow, they realized that something was holding them back. Fettke shows us what they've been missing -- the ability to create powerful partnering relationships and collaborate. Fettke shows us how to develop key alliances and leverage the help of other people. He gets you thinking about who and how others might give you what you need to achieve more with less effort. There are many people who can help, certainly not just coaches. Almost all great things, and great people, are built with the help of others. The quicker one discovers this simple idea, the faster and farther one will fly. ... Read more

Book Description

Are your words working for you?

You say something at a meeting and it is ignored; then when someone else says the same thing, everyone embraces it as a marvelous idea. You devote yourself to a project, but don't get credit for the results. You give what you think are clear instructions, but the job is not done, or done wrong. Sometimes it seems you are not being heard, not getting credit for your efforts, not getting ahead as fast as you should.

Now, Deborah Tannen brings to the workplace the same voice, eye, and insight that made That's Not What I Meant! and You Just Don't Understand bestselling classics. In Talking From 9 to 5, she explores the special world of work -- where we spend countless hours with people we may not understand or even like, and where the way we talk determines not only how we get the job done, but how we are evaluated for our efforts. Offering powerful new ways of understanding what happens in the workplace, from the simplest exchanges to the complex contemporary issues of the glass ceiling, Tannen explains a variety of conversational styles and reveals how each of us can develop the flexibility and understanding we need.

Since the publication of You Just Don't Understand, Tannen has been told over and over, "Your book saved my marriage." Talking From 9 to 5 will have the same dramatic impact on those who are struggling with co-workers, jobs, and companies, and will help entire companies as well as individual women and men thrive in a working world made up of increasingly diverse workforces and ever-more competitive markets. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Analyzing the Communication Skills of the Opposite Sex
I feel that this book was very informational and useful with many instances in my life. It really gave me an insight to the reasons why people act how they do, and it made me comprehend my boyfriend and friends more. I have misunderstood them many times, and after reading parts of this book, I have realized what went wrong.

Deborah Tannen has effectively shown the differences between the communication styles of men and women. Although it doesn't tell either sex how to better their communication styles to close the gap, the book uses many examples of situations that people have encountered and can relate to which will help them better understand things that have happened in their life. It answers a lot of questions for a lot of people. This book is fairly easy reading, but you have to be mature to understand what is being said. If anyone is having problems with the opposite sex, then I strongly recommend this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Yakk...
First, it would be nice to explain, that this book is targeted to (a) women, (b) women suffering from the lack fo self-confidence, (c) women suffering from the lack of self-confidence and comfortable with blaming men for sexism on a working place. It's just too much time spent on sexes relations instead of real communications problems. Of course, difference of male and female styles of communication is a problem, you have to keep in mind, but this is not the ONLY problem. Reading the review on a boook I expected advice on improving my communication skills, not to hear a bunch of regular feministic stream of accusations of the business world. It's just misleading, useless and very unpleasant. So if you want feminist propaganda, this book is for you, if you really want improve your skills, go somewhere else.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good explanation of male/female communication differences.
This is a useful, interesting, provocative description of differences between men's and women's speech behaviors. Tannen takes an essentially socio-cultural stance in explaining the reasons for these differences. Not only does she present coherently her ideas, her speech is crisp and animated; thus, it is a delight to listen to her. This audio is an excellent introduction to Tannen's work on this subject. I ask students enrolled in my Gender and Communication course to listen to this edited tape in lieu of purchasing the book, as this proves to be an efficient alternative to reading the entire book. For instructors similarly inclined, I recommend purchasing two or three copies to be placed on reserve in the university library.

4-0 out of 5 stars The book by Deborah Tannen is enlightening!
Not only I did I personally enjoy the content of this book, but I sincerely wanted my boyfriend, co-workers, and family to read it as well. Her insight is easily applied to everyday life and I appreciate her many references demonstrating her research instead of "pop psychology."

Deborah Tannen is not only highly respected by her colleagues in linguistics and communications around the world, but respected by readers everywhere! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Your Simple Truth [....]
In 1999, I read this book 3 times, during what I still say had to have been the worst possible time in my life. It was a time of profound family betrayal, or acceptance of what I didn't want to believe about who my family really is, what they had expected of me for my 43 years of life, and the role that I blindly held. This book was a painfully compelling book for me to read, yet one that had supported me through my crisis, and led me to convert my family history into becoming a public speaker, a gender-based self-esteem coach, and a journalist. Last week, I decided to read this again, as I noticed that I am being invited to events that signal to me that I have made giant steps since reading this book in 1999. I am so excited about writing and presenting tailored training to make a difference in each of my client's lives. I had written so many introspective documents, for so long, that now, even though I continue to introspectively write, I am consciously and unconsciously talking as someone who is here to make a difference in everyone whose life I do touch in some way. I have found a level of peace through reading Richard J. Leider's book that required me to look deeply in my soul and befriend everything about myself. I actually giggle when I reread my journals from 1999, where I had written profound painful feelings that I experienced. I giggle because I see how I weathered my way through living the life I am meant to live. I gave myself or found in myself gifts that I definitely approve of having.

Regardless of where you are in your life, I suggest that you read this book, with a pen in hand to write down what you are thinking and feeling. Accept that this will be scary, at first. Do this, knowing that you deserve to love yourself for all who you are -- you are sent here to make a difference.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Solid Effort!
Richard J. Leider believes everyone needs to find an individual sense of unique purpose. When you have this sense of purpose, you can use it as a central core of direction to guide your life and give it meaning. The book is simply written, easy to understand and targeted to a general audience. However, it also seems quite repetitious, in that the same ideas are explained many different ways. Some of these concepts are quite familiar, echoing some basic ideas about the importance of having a sense of mission, path, and goals, much like Laurie Beth Jones' book, The Path: Creating Your Mission Statement.... Finally, while some readers may respond deeply to Leider's spiritual and religious references, others may find them problematic, given the split in the business community about spirituality in the workplace. We... recommend this book for readers who have not yet considered this mission-focused dimension of life planning and for managers who wish to understand this perspective.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing
Power of Purpose would make a great magazine article, but there is not enough content here to make a good book. "Creating Meaning in Your Life..." is not what this book is about. There is lots of talk about how important it is to have purpose in your life, but little about how to create it. Mr. Leider has a great reputation -- it must have come from his other books.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a great book!
This book should be in everyone's library. His questions hit home real good, who are you? what are you doing? Where are you going? These are all eternal questions that have crossed everyone's mind. Richard Leider's book addresses these questions, and prompts you to look deep inside yourself to find the answer.

5-0 out of 5 stars You Can/ Deserve to Rise Above The Worst PossibleTrauma
I happened upon the 1985 copy of this book, in a used bookstore, and have read this 3 times, to draw out more of my worthiness, more of my hidden strengths, and to do some things that up to reading this, I secretly believed that I couldn't do. This book is for every human being. I had spent years asking myself what my mission in life was, and years denying myself my right to my mission. Now I have a mission that defines everything that I do, and don't do. It empowers me to separate who I am from who my interlocutor is, to seek kindred spirits, and to never stop growing, according to who I am, and where I am "traveling." I am eternally grateful for this book, for being my guide to my rising above a level of betrayal that others would have prefered I define myself as being limited to. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Thank you Captains Obvious for the groundbreaking ideas!
The authors try to dress up common sense in a "parable" that will make anyone with any sense of the literary cringe.Don't waste your time on this unless you want to study how not to write a book. The writing is awful and the attempts to illustrate what they consider to be deep nuggests of wisdom are laughable. The book is corny in the sense of "gee-golly-whiz Mr. Manager, duh, why didn't I see that.Boy oh boy, by gompers, you're so wise and I want to be just like you!"Book summary: If you want to be effective at work, use common sense, be honest but fair in your praises and criticisms, and master some basic social skills.Really?Wow!That's deeeeeeeeeeeeeeep!

5-0 out of 5 stars Here's what I think...
A simple, straightforward story that provides handy advice for anyone who has to manage people. To boot, most should be able to finish it in a few hours time. Truly a classic, I give it 5 stars easy. Other self-help books I liked include "The No- Beach, No-Zone, No-Nonsense Weight Loss Plan, A Pocket Guide To What Works. Happy reading!

4-0 out of 5 stars A useful managerial book
Ever wanted to read those managerial books out there but had been put off by the the thick textbooks and theories? Look no further with "The One Minute Manager" series of books. Written in simple layman style in the form of a story, each book presents different management concepts. The first book in the series starts off by introducing us to the two types of managerial styles that we know: The task oriented and the people oriented. To get results, the effective manager has to have the correct balance of the two. This can be achieved through 3 one minute secrets: One Minute Goals, One Minute Reprimands and One Minute Praisings. Ponder on the One Minute teachings and you realise how true and simple they are. Of course, as with all things, theory and applications are two different matters altogether. You will still need lots of practice to apply what is taught here. After all, you can't really become a One Minute Manager overnight right?

Recommendations: A must read for all managers out there, especially 'senior management' who often think highly of themselves and their results. :) The concepts would also be useful for parents who need to 'manage' their children better. For fast readers, don't really need to buy the book though as it can be easily digested in less than an hour.

3-0 out of 5 stars good ideas, but pitched to a male audience
I was referred to the One Minute Manager series when I asked someone I considered an excellent manager if he could recommend some management resources. The One Minute Manager introduces readers to the three techniques of one-minute management - clear goal setting, one-minute praisings and one-minute reprimands.

The points are laid out clearly and the recommendations simple and easy to implement. The book can be read quickly in a single sitting or several short pages at a time. Those with very little time can read the four pages that summarize all the points made in the book.

What bothered me about the book was the portrayal of the business world as a very male environment.A young man looks for the perfect manager and finds the amazing One Minute Manager, referred to throughout the book as, "quite a guy!"The male employees, described by age, explain goal setting and praisings. The female employees, described with adjectives indicating their dress or competence, are secretaries, those providing general info, or those being reprimanded. All but one of the acknowledgements are to men as are all but one endorsement. The authors use sports - golf, football and bowling, as analogies, making for a tone off-putting to female readers.Only on the last page does a young woman come to the formerly young man, now a successful One Minute Manager, seeking advice.

It's not a bad book, if you can ignore the gender stereotypes, but it's also quite basic.I learned more from the One Minute Manager Builds High Performing Teams.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Small Book with a Big Impact
I was amazed in how small the book is when I received it in my mail. And it took me only forty minutes to fall in love with it. A focused book that should be obtained by all managers. By all, I mean manager of life too, which is everybody! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Belongs on the list of all time investment classics.
Other reviewers have written that this book is undervalued and they are right. Right from the start Hagstrom gives us advice on the nature of the market. He then gives management tenants, how to value a business and all kinds of investment tenants. These tenents are so fundamental that its very difficult to see how investing can be done without them in one form or the other. This makes the book timeless. Numerous examples are given from real world cases of how these tenants are used. There is also an excellent appendix that gives examples of how a business is valued. This is very helpful. Some reviewers have criticized Hagstrom, saying that if the book is true, why isnt he rich? But this is not how information is to be judged. There are many books that contain solid gold advice, but there are few who master them. Buffett is among them. If one wants additional information on Buffets methods, I suggest reading "How to pick stocks like Warren Buffett" by Tim Vick. But The Warren Buffett Way is a classic and at the top of the heap.

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the most popular investment reads
This book is for anyone whether you are trying to understand investing for the first time or an experienced investor refreshing yourself with the principles of fundamental analysis. Hagstrom answers all the questions of what makes Buffett one of the most successful investors of our time. He talks about Buffett's childhood as a boy ambitious to turn a profit in selling Coca Cola as well as his philosophy behind which he makes his decisions on buying a particular stock. The refreshing part about investing like Buffett is whether you buy millions of dollars worth of stock or just a few shares of stock, you can still use the same principles that Buffett uses in making a decision. The methods are straight-forward and bring common sense approach to picking stocks. In it you buy stocks as if you were buying groceries and not as if you were buying perfume. It is not even necessary to know any complicated formulae about how to determine the value of a stock although some elementary math is required. If you only had to pick one book to read about investing and burn all the other books I would recommend this book. It is more informative that many other textbooks out there read by college students filled with unnecessary math and financial theory.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the read
Forget B-school, read this book. Seriously, a great introduction to value investing and the Buffett mentality of risk.

Hagstrom's analysis is very easy to read and understand... a book everyone should read.

5-0 out of 5 stars What if Mr. Market goes really crazy?
If you are reading this book just to be better informed, I think you will get your money's worth. I feel I got a five-star education. But if you are going to read it to make a decision to buy or not to buy Berkshire Hathaway, you should keep these two points in mind: First, almost everyone considers Warren Buffet to be the world's greatest investor. This special attribute of Mr. Buffet might be reflected in the price of Berkshire Hathaway stock. If Warren Buffet were no longer around, what would that do to Berkshire Hathaway? Hasn't Mr. Buffet's greatness built in a premium in Berkshire Hathaway stock?

Second, this book proves that Mr. Buffet beat Mr. Market most of the time under normal circumstances. In abnormal circumstances, Mr. Market could beat Mr. Buffet. Abnormal circumstances would exist if Mr. Market went into a long, deep depression (like he did in the 1930's and dropped in value by 90%). And could a second terrorist attack similar to 9/11 cause Mr. Market to panic and create abnormal circumstances in the economy?

No matter how good the company, Mr. Market can and will hurt the value of its stock. If there is another terrorist attack like 9/11, Mr. Market will panic and Coca Cola, Washington Post, GEICO, etc., would all suffer terribly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Once Again, Take It With A Grain of Salt
I am not Warren Edward Buffett. Unlike Mr. Buffett, who has the delightful headache of trying to figure out where to put his steadily growing billions, I am a non-investor, sitting on the sidelines, wondering what all the fuss is about. Like most readers of this book, I have been told incessantly to invest for retirement, and not knowing exactly how I should do so, I figured it might be a good idea to glean a few secrets from a proven successful investor. Hence, I read The Warren Buffett Way from cover to cover, hoping to learn a few things.

And what did I learn? I learned that I am not Warren Edward Buffett. Unlike Mr. Buffett, whose circle of associates includes all of the Beautiful People of Corporate America, I am surrounded by ordinary people, more than a few of whom are looking for a way to get rich quick. Whereas Mr. Buffett is patient and thoughtful with his investments, most of the people I encounter are thoughtless and reckless with their gambles. These two things, which I increasingly began to ponder as I read this book, distinguish me from the Oracle of Omaha, and quite possibly from most readers of this book.

The book consists of nine chapters, and is mostly historical in nature. It details many of Buffett's past exploits in the stock market, mostly the good moves but also some bad ones, and offers some of the principles guiding Mr. Buffett's stock investing strategy, grouped into three classes called Management, Financial and Market Tenets. The first four chapters of the book delve into the early history of Berkshire Hathaway, the key influences on Mr. Buffett which helped to shape his investment philosophy, Mr. Buffett's perspective on the financial markets, and the principles by which he goes about purchasing a business. The last five chapters of the book give example after example of some of Mr. Buffett's past stock moves, and tries to show his Tenets in action.

The style of the book is mostly active until the fifth chapter, whereupon it becomes plodding. The book is extremely repetitive at points, and as other reviewers have pointed out, key concepts are not fully explained up front, suggesting that the possible target audience for this book are those having a strong background in the general principles of economics and business.

In all honesty, I have previously encountered most of the content of this book in coursework or self-study. I previously read Mr. Hagstrom's The Warren Buffett Portfolio, and found the two books to be similar in some respects. That said, I still found this book to be very interesting and useful, primarily because it exposed me to an investment approach which utilizes these concepts in ways I had not previously considered. I also found it highly interesting on an anecdotal level, given that Mr. Buffett's investment career spans The Go-Go Years, The Nifty Fifty Stocks and the 80s and 90s Tech Stock Boom, and yet he never once participated in these tech-stock manias but handily outperformed tech stock investors nonetheless.

Like I said, I am not Warren Edward Buffett and I can not expect or even hope to do what he does, but that does not mean that I can not think like him. Even Mr. Buffett cautions the small investor in this regard, as there are things that he can do that none of little guys can do. Yet, he also has said that there are things the little guy can do that he can not do. That said, the book deserves to be read by any one lacking the ability to reason through the process of investing. However, readers at all levels should not stop with this book. Others have pointed out that one could get even more information straight from the horse's mouth- the Berkshire Hathaway website.

On the other hand, as this information details past moves for which the conditions surrounding them are most unlikely to come around again, I believe that the more astute reader looking to learn more should consult The Money Game by Adam Smith for a brief historical look at financial foolishness (albeit the late sixties but the resemblance to Right Now is striking), The Theory of Investment Value by John Burr Williams for Buffett's original basis for valuation, and The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham for a more detailed explanation of the concepts of margin of safety, intrinsic value, and the benefits associated with ignoring the market noise. These three books will help one learn how to reason through the investment problem, as this is the most important step, aside from finding smart people (as Mr. Smith admonishes forcefully in The Money Game and Buffett has consistently done) and thinking more but acting less (as Buffett has said- do a few things right and screw everything else). ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Insightful!
Ken Blanchard, one of the most successful business authors of all time, teams up with Terry Waghorn in this clear, concise guide to surviving and prospering in a time of great change. The authors show you how to guide your business through the present while simultaneously preparing for and implementing changes for the future. This well-balanced book, which focuses as much on vision, intuitive processes and thinking as it does on nuts-and-bolts strategy, is a valuable guide for working and leading in the twenty-first century. We [...] recommend this book for everyone in business, and find it particularly essential for leaders, managers, and business owners.

4-0 out of 5 stars Attention Survivors!
Mission Possible... is a book about surviving today and recreating your organization for tomorrow. The authors use the analogy of a sand castle which faces the incoming tide. Does one leave it alone to face certain destruction and hope that it doesn't happen for a while; or does one take immediate action to build barriers along the beach for protection, which may or may not help; or does one plan for the future by redesigning the structure as well as relocate the castle? People are the key to an organization's success and the way a leader can best encourage them towards this goal is to allow them to become involved in improving the present or inventing the organization's tomorrow. It's all about the journey and the understanding of what is possible.

I used this for a reading assignment for a class and found it to be interesting. It certainly is easy to read and while others may find it's message too simple, I feel that it is the simple message that gets across easily and stays with you the longest.

4-0 out of 5 stars Find some 21st Century spectacles - quick!
Buy the book because there is far too much useful information to take in at even two listenings. Although it starts as typical 'heard it all before' the last two sides are remarkable in their depth and panorama. There is advice and guidance for everyone here. We need to ask questions of our customers and competitors. How would our customers redesign our company? Three steps: vision - picture of what we need to become to better serve existing customers, prepare - what is the shortest path from where we are to where we need to be, deliver - change organisation to match vision. Customer facing people need to be empowered to solve problems on the spot, not refer to their managers. Your organisation is evaluated by how quickly it can respond to customer needs and problems. The person they care about is are the ones they talk to and they want top service from these people. Making all your people your business partners is a way of raising financial awareness and therefor cutting costs (story of 5c margin in restaurant). Divide into cost centres and profit centres. What is the strategic reason for performing the function of the cost centres? Should the work be outcourced? Should be spending more time managing profits not costs. Profit results from keeping needs of customers and employees paramount. 4 key managerial roles: producing - technical skills in field, make things happen, implementing - planners and administrators, maintain order and control, innovating - entrepreneurs, future looking and integrating - motivators, good at teamwork. Also 4 mismanagement styles: lone rangers - producers who cannot delegate, bureaucrats - implementers who focus on administration, process and rules, arsonists - innovators who never follow through or implement the ideas of others, super followers who cannot provide direction. In times of change are leaders willing to: relinquish 'parental control; look at both long and short term; supply resources and support; communicate and remove obstacles; help others overcome uncertainty and fear; admit that they do not have all the answers. Control kills learning, invention and commitment. Bossidy - burning platform principle, people 'jump' only when they see flames themselves. Leaders need to help people see the flames. Long term provides focus not on survival but the future. When in doubt communicate more, not less. Nelson Mandela - "Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us." In order to help people manage change we need to keep everyone informed so they know what is in it for them. Change means that people feel awkward about needing to act differently, they focus on what they will lose, (what you resist, persists), they feel alone, they feel overwhelmed if there is too much change so they need to experience some successes before taking on more change. Readiness for change varies. Although people feel that they need more resources to do more - we have to do more with less. Need to keep everyone encouraged by catching people doing something right, but leaders need sufficient self-esteem to help others feel good about themselves. Discipline required managing perpetual churn (whitewater). Catch yourself doing something right - managing your self-talk. What do you want to be doing? Our problem is not what we see, but what we see with. At the brink of the 21st Century we cannot see the future with 20th Century spectacles.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disppointing
I should have come to this site and read the reviews before purchasing the book. It was very disappointing. The chapter headings were interesting, and some were good insights. However, the author spent too much time around elaborating too many of the sub-points. There were also little case studies. Felt like the book could be condensed a lot more.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing. Should have been a lot better.
I've read several books by Blanchard. I like his approach on behavioral side of management. I bought this book, expecting to find just that. Since most of the "visionary" books deal with the organization or system perspectives, I always want to know about the "human" side. But I don't find the answer from this book. The contents are too light to provide any answer to the issue. Unlike some good books on the similar topic such as James Martin's Cybercorp which tells you in very details on how you should prepare for the future, Mission Possible does not give me anything comparable ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Easy and quickly adaptable for social party , dinner
At the same time, I have ordered Debra's tape, I have bought also 7 others books and video, audio tapes from others authors, on the same subject of conversation. Debra's tape , definitely appears to me, easy, confortable, to apply for any occasions to talk to people Her voice is very friendly and warm. I am so glad to have found Debra' audio tape. She gives , not only advice and techniques, but immediate examples of small talk for introducing yourself , with warmness and giving people the chance and the desire to develop conversation with you. Usually, when invited to dinner, or cocktails , or meeting , I go with the apprehension to meet new people , and to be in the situation of nothing to say , and to appear not interesting to be with. The days after listening to Debra's tape, I have the opportunity to apply in a dinner . I was the guest on a table of 12 persons that I did not know. The evening was lovely, because at last I could engage conversation with new people, as if we were friends. I feel much more confortable ,in such short time and I know that with more training with this tape, I will allow myself, for near future, to love meeting new people, as well as to talk friendly with my clients, my hairdresser, old friends... I really recommend this tape to who wishes to leave a positive impression.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fianlly...help for the conversationally-challenged
The Fine Art of Small Talk is fantastic! Author Debra Fine gives wonderful ideas and tips for starting, maintaining and ending a conversation. The Fine Art of Small Talk is perfect for anyone who's less than completely secure about his or her conversation skills, anyone who wants to overcome feeling awkward or tongue-tied, and especially for anyone who wants to learn to gracefully deal with people who talk to much, offer unsolicited advice, etc., etc. I've found that the tips in the book are perfect for both business and social settings. I can tell that using the advice makes a big difference in how people respond. The Fine Art of Small Talk really has had a positive impact. Be warned, though: you may - as I did - see yourself among the list of the author's "conversation offenders!" Not surprisingly, the book is written in an engaging, conversational style and, in addition to being helpful, is extremely enjoyable.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rent it! Very clear and crisp advice
The issue is that most us find it difficult to have a small talk specially with strangers.

The conclusion is that if you take the risk (of rejection) and burden of making the small talk, you will reap the benefits.

The examples are good. I like it for the clarity and crispness. I am going to try the advise since it is not too difficult.

This book is written by a woman, for women. Being male and reading this book, i quickly saw how useless this book is for me. I am not being sexist so quit mounting your offense, i am simply stating fact. Her lack of knowledge on the male spectrum of this lack of communication skill is obvious. She knows what it's like for women, but cannot speak for men.

Book Description

A scheduled three-hour interview between a young Napoleon Hill and Andrew Carnegie strung out to three days. During that time, Carnegie revealed his secrets of success and then offered young Hill the task of organizing and systematizing the world's first philosophy of individual achievement based on the principles. From that moment on, Napoleon Hill dedicated his life to spreading the philosophy of achievement and the principles of success worldwide for the benefit of all people.

The Principles of Self-Mastery represents an in-depth discussion of Napoleon Hill's first four principles of personal achievement-the foundation upon which personal success is built.

The Principles of Self-Mastery is the first of four volumes in this updated and revised edition of The Laws of Success, which was originally published as an eight-volume set.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Do one definite thing everyday."
Many of the self help books today are like fast food.Made for easy consumption.
I guess that is why The Law of Success was such a pleasant surprise. It has some real meat to it. So much so that it has taken me three weeks to digest just the first two volumes of material on the 17 Laws that are presented in the first two installments.
This volume covers the first four lessons of the 17 principles that make up The Law of Success.

Self-Mastery is engaging enough to make me continue on to volume II as well as order volumes 3 & 4.Hard to believe it was written so long ago but yet is STILL so relevant to today's business environment.

The 4 questions on Definiteness of Purpose were the best part. They are as follows:
1.Have you decided upon a definite goal in life?

2.Have you set a date for reaching that goal?

3.Do you have a specific plan for achieving your goal in life?

4.Have you determined what definite benefits your goal in life will bring you?

5-0 out of 5 stars To truly clear the air about NapoleanHill........
I have been following Napolean Hill since 1975. The review that precedes mineindicates that Hill only wrote a few books that the reviewer posts. The fact is that Napolean Hill wrote ALL the books that bear his name. TRUE, some of his books have been repreinted by other publishers, I believe this is what the reviewer is trying to communicate.

Saying that he did not write all the books he is credited with is like saying that is not Napolean Hill's voice on the tape programs.

Obviously, this reviewer is as confused as the reviewer from Canada. In fact, probably the same person who suddenly decided to live in New Jersey.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just To Set The Record Straight
Just to set the record straight Napoleon Hill only wrote the following books.

1919-1920
"The Golden Rule Magazine"
Napoleon Hill edited and published

1928
"Law of Success"
published (Ralston Society, Publishers)

1930
"The Magic Ladder to Success"

1937
"Think and Grow Rich"

1939
"How to Sell Your Way Through Life"

1953
"How to Raise Your Own Salary"

1960
"Success Through a Positive Mental Attitude"

1970
"You Can Work Your Own Miracles"

All other books were either compiled by others or used his notes to write the books, he himself did not write them, period. I have been studying his works for 15 years. Yes, I am rich from studying his works.

As with any revision there will always be some critics, the original LOS contained only 15 laws, I have seen the original set with my own eyes, again the authors are correct.

Some of the things in this book could have been done differently as with all revisions, however they did their best to remain true to the spirit of the book...

I purchased the huge paperback and enjoyed the little notes they added, some of them could have gone a little deeper, but no biggie.

Ideally, in a perfect world it would be perfect. Keep in mind they worked with a lot of people who all had to agree on these things.

5-0 out of 5 stars I have to disagree with the reviewer from Canada...
First on the quality of information in this book, it is outstanding. The tossil marker, sufficient. But more to the point, this reader says Napolean Hill did not write a book called Keys to Success; I beg your pardon. He certaintly did. It is subtitled: The 17 Principles of Personal Achievement and actually offers even more concrete information on these 17 principles than Think and Grow Rich.

Hill also wrote The Master Key to Riches which this reviewer from Canada refers to. EASY MISUNDERSTANDING. Just wanted to clear that up.

5-0 out of 5 stars The first four principles to success
I have to admit, I love books and I particularly like success books especially the hardbound books like this one. Seems to make them more enjoyable and adds to the value.

In this edition, you will learn the first four principles of success as written by Hill via Andrew Carnegie.

Another reviewer writes that he was dissappointed because Hill does not cover NLP (it wasn't invented then or was it?) In reality what Hill teaches via autosuggestion, visualization etc. is very similiar to NLP and probably just as effective. The trick is to combine these techniques with a burning desire, emotion, vividness and consistency. I know they worked for me.

This book is outstanding and I highly recommend it. Powerful material. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
For the last 12 or 15 years I have been a keen reader of Self-help, self improvement books, ranging from Selfhypnosis, creative visualization and meditation. This one is far the best I have ever read. After the short introduction, the rest of the book takes you through the basics of NLP. Each chapter is covered by excercises that with their implementation convinces even the sceptic, that NLP truely is the New Technology of Achievement. It's not just a book to be read, but a book to be experienced. The impact of the excercises will fast benefit in all aspects of ones life. Dont just read it, TRY IT.

4-0 out of 5 stars Never mind that last guy the book is good
First let me make a statement about the last reviewers objections. First, hey nobody in NLP claims that this stuff is all air-tight and scientific. "The map is not the territory." This is one way of saying BS is fine if its a useful model. Second, this is not a re-hash of the tremendous book Psycho-Cybernetics in which Maltz has us spend 30 days a night visualizing ourselves with all the behaviors, emotions, and achievments we wish we would have in order to supply a new self-image to our instinctive "success mechanism". (Of course there are many ot
