180 pages of more techniques than you could possibly use. The formulas are well explained, the strategies (series of 7, magic number of three, moving averages, exponential moving averages, stochastics, csi, rsi, regression analysis, etc) are also well explained. As somone who has searched for the ultimate formula, oscillator, technique or what ever for trading commodities, after reading this book, I've concluded that you can find a chart or group of charts to justify ANY idea. Very persuasive book, with new and bright ideas for the future. It has motivated me to become a more people oriented person. I will take closer looks and my employees needs and wants, taking care of the customer has become one of my greatest concerns. Thank you for the edge on life. Omar Cumberbatch, CEO Royal Family Pro.

3-0 out of 5 stars Each piece is too short to provide any satisfying insight
Straight from over thirty of today's most innovative CEOs come the ideas that are reshaping and reinvigorating the modern corporation-written exclusively for this book. Straight from the CEO is a major work, because the world rarely hears directly from the great contemporary business leaders-the chief movers and shakers of major corporations. Working closely with the Price Waterhouse management team, a wide variety of chief executives who are successfully managing today's rapid pace of economic change present their ideas about leading and motivating people, unleashing innovation and creativity, and learning from customers to revitalize their businesses. Among the CEOs represented in the book are the heads of British Airways, Compaq Computer, Monsanto, Royal Dutch/Shell, Enron, Chase Manhattan Bank, and Warner-Lambert. The scope is worldwide: from Bangkok to Jakarta, from Dusseldorf to Dallas. No ivory tower theorizing, no speeches, no "consultant speak," these are the practical insights of leaders who every day must find ways to test and validate new ideas, implement change to improve the bottom line, and ultimately focus on the core ideas that will truly reshape their corporation.

Straight from the CEO is an important tool for managers at every level, focusing on such issues as creating loyalty to customers, organizing globally, fostering individual employee motivation, and leveraging corporate values to enhance performance. These are the pressing issues that face every manager who strives to sort out valuable contributions from impractical ideas, the gold from the dross, and then take action that gets results. As intellectually stimulating as it is practical, Straight from the CEO is an invaluable report from the executive trenches.

By necessity brief, the many pieces (I hesitate to call them chapters or even articles) lack depth, assume much and as a result are quite unstatisfying; but they do leave the reader hungry for more!

Based on a collection of essays by global corporate leaders, the book is structured around 6 themes: globalisation, radical change, leadership, culture, innovation, and customer relationship. Percy Barnevik of ABB, explains how to balance global resources and local autonomy, Richard Evans of British Aerospace shows why radical changes required CEOs to get out of their ivory towers. The book is well illustred and easy to read. It doesn't contain academic theory or consultancy methods. Book Description

Today's growing fascination with flows of people, commodities, technology, capital, images and ideas across national and other boundaries poses fresh theoretical and methodological challenges to anthropology. Commodities offer a particularly useful window on globalization because they, unlike electronically conveyed capital, transport cultural messages. These ideological or symbolic transfers are of particular interest to economic anthropology. This collection considers how conceptions and roles of commodities may change in response to widening spheres of economic interaction and exchange. The essays in this volume are ordered under two themes. Those included in the first section, "Commodities in a Globalizing Marketplace," address historically and culturally defined variations in meanings and practices associated with commodities in globalizing markets. In Part Two, "The Circulation and Revaluation of Commodities", contributors analyze how commodity producers' experiences are informed by colonial and post-colonial history, state directives in the marketplace, and locations in dependent or marginalized regions. The chapters all focus on the production process as it responds to, is distorted by and increasingly is controlled by the determination of the value of those commodities outside a "locality". ... Book Description

Spread Trading. It's exciting. Stimulating. Highly profitable. Yet - it remains a mystery to most traders. Despite the benefits offered by this dynamic hedge tool, many traders don't understand how to recognize relationships in the commodity and financial markets - and use them to enhance their trading performance.

Now, renowned market maker Howard Abell offers the definitive book on this exciting technique, outlining strategies for analyzing opportunities, tactics for implementation, and savvy advice on overcoming the psychological barriers that hold most spread traders back. Four easy-to-follow sections reveal exactly what it takes to trade based on the concept of differential - or the relationship between commodities or similar products - including …

1) Psychological factors that make for the most successful spreaders, and developing a strategic game plan for spreading success.

2) Technical analysis and spread trading - seasonal, cyclical and historical spread relationships to exploit, such as using spreads in the grain market to profit from summer drought.

3) Spread trading methods of the top market experts. Specific strategies that have proved successful by the specialists in various asset classes.

4) Every principle & benefit spread trading affords from discovering opportunities in seemingly dull markets to earning greater long-term profits with highly calculated risk.

Good spreaders are daring yet disciplined, focused yet flexible, well-prepared yet able to think on their feet - and Abell arms readers with the analytical and psychological skills required to be not just good, but great traders, as he outlines techniques for …

Trading to win, instead of trading not to lose
Building the inevitability of draw downs into your strategy
Identify the market signal, or "spread entry point"
And many more important tools for winning big by spreading trading.

With a foreword by the CBOT's chairman Patrick Arbor, this timely handbook will equip you to face head-on the challenge of spread trading in the real world. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Abell Clearly Defines Spreading
I'm a professional spread trader on the floor of the CBOT and found Spread Trading to be right on the money.I spread Bonds to Ten Years And Grains;not only is this book to the point-no filler-but also covers the all important issue of trader psychology.Howard abell is known on the trading floor and this book reveals why.

2-0 out of 5 stars Title is misleading....
The title is very misleading due to the fact that this book contains no trading strategies. It does, however, do a good job of talking about the psychology of trading (one of the most important aspects). The interviews are good but contain no real practical knowledge. In my opinion, save the money and go for another, perhaps more advanced book if you're concerned with trading strategies. I will not even recommend this book to the beginner for it requires a broad knowledge of how the trading floor works. This book mentions little about value (the MOST important thing about legging and trading spreads). As far as spread trading goes, this isn't the one. Dan Vassallo (New York Cotton Exchange).

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of Money
The book was written 1997, do not get confused with the publishing date of 2003. The printed daily line charts are from 1997 without hardly any description. The same almost applies to the numerous useless pages filled with tables of historical spread trades that could have been done between 1981 and 1996. This book does not contain stategies at all. Furthermore the book is full of sentences of the following kind: "Computer generated Numbers. Most traders have a library of proven computer numbers. They may be applied with success in spread trading. The only caveat however, is that they usually are not self-contained systems and should be used along with the several other devices I have spoken about."
My advice: Walk away from this trade!

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
If I had wanted a psychology book I would have bought one! Mr. Abell is obviously obsessed with the subject as there is almost nothing in this book that gives the nuts and bolts of spread trading. 45% deals with the psychology of trading, 45% of it are interviews with "successful" spread traders, and the remaining 10% if you discount the charts deals with spreading. Save your money.

4-0 out of 5 stars A psychological account of day trading.
This book describes the often overlooked psychological aspect of day trading. If you're looking for an explanation of Elliot Waves, you won't find it here! What you will find is an in depth study of the psychy of a winning trader.

5-0 out of 5 stars What day trading is all about!
The value of this book comes from the interviews with 8 successful day traders. The author asks them the same set of keys questions. Their answers are both similar and different: their mindset is similar, but the way they trade can vary widely.

Buy this book if you want to understand the attitude required to day trade, but don't look in here for a magic system to get rich. One major lesson of the book is that there is value in finding it by yourself, in an almost never ending process.

2-0 out of 5 stars you too can be a trading guru
Here is my take on Mr. Abell: he is the Tony Robbins of the trading world. He is the feel-good psychology guru of trading. If you want to know what's in his books, and how to enjoy similar success, here is the formula:

First, start with a handful of old-as-dirt trading cliches (cut your losses, let your profits run, be confident, etc.). Come up with a bunch of analogies to dress up these old cliches and say them in new ways (for example, 'you can't score touchdowns if you don't have the ball' or 'when you start feeling bulletproof, that's when bullets pierce flesh' etc.). This should cover the first 30 pages or so. Second, find a couple of friends or acquaintances who you can pass off as successful traders (they might not be able to trade their way out of a paper bag, but it doesn't matter because no track records will be posted). Interview these 'traders,' and have them make similar observations. This should get you well past the 100 page mark- maybe even further if you are using nice sized print and putting plenty of space between the paragraphs and bullet points. Third, spice up the visual presentation by occasionally mixing in charts with the text. It doesn't really matter if the charts have anything to do with the stuff you wrote; people just like to look at charts. (You might want to add some technical notes, though, to add credibility.) Then, finally, if you still need more filler to get to the publishable stage, add in a chapter or two of public information- on the different exchanges, lists of different stocks and futures you can trade, details of order entry systems- basically some free info that takes up space.

If you follow this tried and true formula, you too should be able to crank out close to a dozen books on trading. And there will always be a fresh crop of beginners, not yet beat over the head with rehashed trading rules, to rave about how good your books are and what insight they hold.

4-0 out of 5 stars hmm.
another book by a supposedly successful trader. Outlines the authors subjective methods. Lots of fluff.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Day Trader's Advantage, How to move from one winning pos
Because of the author's name and reputation, I was anxious to open this book, read and gain something. Within forty minutes of the read, I found myself skimming through the book to find something with some meat in it. Instead, I found the first 24 pages covering "The Psychology of . . .", "Overcoming the Psychological Barriers . . .", etc., etc. Then we go to 8 pages that touch on "Market Analysis & Day Trading," and then, "The Innergame Trading Approach." Mind you, 8 pages, or a little longer than most forewards. The vast remainder of the book is the author interviewing several well know traders about this and that. The questions are general and as often as not the trader being interviewed rambles on in generalities. My impression of this work is the author was evidently long on positions in the market and decided to write this book while he waited for a price move. Conversely, a book I purchased at the same time,"Trade Your Way to Financial Freedom," by: Van K. Tharp is excellent. This book has something to say and information for anyone to consider or incorporate. ... Read more

Book Description

Deterrence of market manipulation is central to the entire regulatory and legal framework governing the operation of American commodity futures markets. However, despite all of the regulatory, scholarly, and legal scrutiny of market manipulation, the subject is widely misunderstood. Federal commodity and securities laws prohibit manipulation, but do not define it. Scholarly research has failed to analyze adequately the causes or effects of manipulation, and the relevant judicial decisions are confused, confusing, and contradictory. The aim of this book is to illuminate the process of market manipulation by presenting a rigorous economic analysis of this phenomenon, including the conditions that facilitate it and its effects on market users and others. The conclusions of this analysis are used to examine critically some legal and regulatory anti-manipulation policies. The Economics, Law and Public Policy of Market Power Manipulation concludes with a set of robust and realistic tests that regulators and jurists can apply to detect and deter manipulation. ... Book Description

Agricultural markets have entered a long-term process of liberalization, with the aim of reducing imposed market imperfections such as monopolistic public trade, entry barriers and subsidies. The experience of more than a decade of agriculture liberalization offers a good opportunity to review and analyze the outcome of this process and to draw lessons for the future. The central topic in Agricultural Markets Beyond Liberalization is the relationship between market structure and how markets perform in a dynamic context during a liberalization process. The topic is studied from both a micro and macro viewpoint and refers to different types of agricultural markets. This volume brings together the dynamics of agricultural markets in several parts of the world, with a special focus on transition economics and Africa. The different studies cover geographical areas as wide as a district as well as a group of countries, and institutions from individual contracts to multi-national organizations. The analysis of liberalization under different circumstances, and the different methods of analysis used by the authors provide a valuable foundation for the assessment of liberalization. ...
